Pete, your videos are absolutely priceless my friend, thank you so much. A friend of mine turned me on to your channel because I was so frustrated with my inability to record properly and I felt overwhelmed by the official Apple tutorials, but you speak a language that I understand. Please keep up the good work, you deserve millions of subs. Namaste.
Love the concept of the song Pete! (EDIT: that song would really suit an ending where the character just gets the first part of the word ‘blame’ out, then there’s a roaring sound of a large bus cuts him off midway through it...throw in the sound of a guitar getting smashed up etc, and his last words must be said as a bystander points out he was on his phone he croaks as if to someone leaning in ‘but I’M never to blame’). Great lyrics quite inspiring. Fred’s stuff is top notch. I use his reverb more as an effect then garageband’s along with panning to set my stereo location. Admit maxima was lost on me will try it again now. Take care, ‘can-guru’.
This is so awesome. I’m working on a 5 or 6 track solo acoustic EP I’m going to finish this year. Man! Thanks to your instruction with everything and adapting to the iPhone specifically, I feel like I’m able to do this and have a final project that I’m pleased with. By the way this is my favorite original of yours
You can instantly a/b two tracks without stopping by muting one of them and then toggling the solo button on that same track. When you turn solo off it automatically goes back to being muted, so you don’t have to solo the other track. Just thought I’d mention that since a/b’ing really only works when there is no delay between the two.
Thanks my friend! It took me a while to realise that the camera seems to drain energy pretty quickly, so I need to bring a little extra. It makes things more fun for me too. 🙂
I certainly enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing such a large amount of tips and tricks. As far as feedback on your mixing of this song...maybe it's just me, but I'd still like to hear the drums a little more present in the mix. Other than that, enjoyed it a lot. And lyrics are fun.
Thanks Tony. Really appreciate your kind words. Yes, I kept bringing the drums up and down and I think you're right that they're still a little buried in the final mix. Oh well - every song is a learning experience for the next song right!?
That sounded great! Great song, great voice, great performance! It's definitely radio ready! (And I have the whole FAC suite thanks to you, as well as several Positive Grid products) I have so many questions, but I'll keep it to two since I've been overloading you lately! 1. Is that a stereo track? Why is only one wave form? 2. I'm just about done with my first Final Touch master. Do you upload 16 or 24 bit masters to Distrokid? Do you think it matters? I noticed FT gives one the choice to export either way. Thanks again! Love your voice and your songs. Cheers!
I think I still owe you an answer from your Final Touch exporting question, so I’ll circle back to that one when I get back to my iPad, but for now... Yes, GarageBand shows stereo tracks as one collective waveform. It’s a little confusing if you’re used to other DAWs where they separate them but you can see the two channels in the metering (green, sometimes yellow/orange bars). 24-bit is best for your masters so the best quality gets pushed out to the various platforms. 16-bit is there because if you were mastering files for a CD, 16-bit is the maximum bitrate so that’s what you would want your masters to be. For digital distribution, always go 24-bit. Hope this helps! Pete.
Ok, great! Yes it does! And you've partially answered my FT export question as long as one has a Dropbox, which is free for 2GB I believe. Last night I was able to export my FT master to Dropbox and then with their iPad app bring it into iOS Garageband but mistakenly thought something was amiss when I saw only the single wave form. Still it does seem silly to have to send it to the cloud and back when the file resides on the iPad. Maybe there's another way. Oh, a 3rd Question: What is RMS? And what kind of number range is one looking for? Thanks again! I'll give you a respite from all my questions for a while! I've really put you through the paces!
Nice! Yeah, I’ll circle back with other Final Touch options soon. So, RMS stands for “Root Mean Square” and it another type of metering. Most metering measures the “peak”, that is, the loudest/highest point of the waveform. RMS instead measures the average (sort of) loudness (sort of) of the signal. You’re basically comparing maximum with average, though true audio aficionados would tear me apart for this over simplified explanation. 😅
Ah, I’ve discovered the answer: Final Touch gives you the option to share to “Audio Copy” Once one exports to that, it takes you to a page where you can simply copy and paste the mastered .wav file back into GarageBand without having to use Dropbox. Actually I remember trying that first thing yesterday but being thrown off by the single waveform as mentioned before. Sorry for posting about Final Touch under the FAC Maxima topic!
Nice one! I knew there was a way to keep it local. Would be great if there was proper “Files” integration so we could just save the WAV files directly. I think I used iTunes File Sharing to send back to my PC last time from memory.
Thanks Jay. I have a Final Touch video from a previous track here - ruclips.net/video/XRtrDB8aQC0/видео.html I’ll be doing some more tutorials soon as I’ve had a few requests.
Amazing video well done buddy. I’m loving all this GB stuff. It’s the only thing I use for my music - shame that my iPad cannot get the Alchemy synth but oh well. Got two or three ‘songs’ on the go but just can’t get the lyrics out!
Hey Phil! Nice one my friend! Yeah, a little annoying that we only have Alchemy on some devices. Good luck with getting those lyrics happening and make sure you share some music with me when it’s done!
You can indeed out your final master through multiple stages provided you have enough headroom. That is, you keep your maximum volume under 0dB so you can add more processing.
Definitely sounded better after the plug in. Still trying to hear the subtleties of the various adjustments you made. How can you tell your track volume can compete with other songs?
This is on iPad and I believe it is available for iPhone too? I tend to use Final Touch more for mastering these days. ruclips.net/video/kImp5LABg0w/видео.html
Love the guitar 🎸 chords mon...Awesome song writing ✍🏾 this track I can hear in a movie 🎥 score as I guy who is talking to a lot of women in different scenes, different approach methods and no matter how much these women resist, the end scene with all them is THE BED 🛏 SQUEAKING AT THE END OF THE GET TOGETHERS...So it would just be quick little scenes if this guys MASTER CHARM working and these gyals FALLING FOR IT...They fell for his swooning...Its THEIR FAULT....HE’S NEVER TO BLAME 👍🏾 Rispek from 🇯🇲🇧🇷 ☝🏾 love mon 🤟🏾
I like it. Btw Pete is there a way to give equal midi note length when playing/recording parts. Cubasis allows quantisation of note length, can GarageBand also do this? I have a proper studio setup with Cubase Pro 9.5 and Logic Pro X but my favourite studio is the iPad Pro with GarageBand and Cubasis 2.6 and my iPhone 8 Plus with GarageBand. For me it’s a lot more fun and enjoyable using iOS in portable setups... especially for instrumentals..
Thanks my friend. Appreciate the kind words and agree with you about creating on iPad/iPhone. I barely touch my PC any more for music production. In regards to the MIDI in GB, unfortunately there is no note length option in quantisation, which is a little frustrating. Being able to dial in less than 100% quantisation would also be good. I guess GarageBand iOS is a cut down version by design but hopefully we get improvements like this in future updates.
Cheers my friend. Yes, mixing vocals too loud is my number one issue. Learning to balance better in my more recent mixes. ruclips.net/video/yGTXvpePJOI/видео.html
Do you use the maxima on your individual tracks much? I’m wondering if that would be a good idea. Just got the Maxima since I was so impressed w your use of it
The FAC Maxima works great on drums actually. Really gives some some pinch to get through the mix. And I have used it on vocals very lightly as a second compressor. Works really well!
Hey Pete! How are you doing? Since this video is from 2018, I was wondering if you have discovered a plug in that improves even more the audio quality in 2020. Thanks.
Hey Daniel. Thanks for your question. I have tried a few different options for mastering since. For the best complete control I use Final Touch for mastering - ruclips.net/video/JEPghASWB2Q/видео.html For a simpler option I go for something like AudioMaster Pro - ruclips.net/video/P3G6ridH6Hc/видео.html
Pete Johns Pete Johns Pete Johns hey Pete, thanks for your answer. Since I don’t have an IPad, I will buy one of the available options for IPhones. Which of those do you recommend better? Audiomaster pro or fax maxima?
Hi Pete - I see that you have an empty "FX" track listed in this song project. Is it safe to say that you used that cool trick of turning down the gain the that track's EQ to compensate for Apple's auto normalization when exporting to WAV? Cheers.
Yup. I almost always lower the volume on my master before exporting. It will still normalise your to zero in the loudest parts, but as long as they’re actual limiting down, you can then just reduce the input gain in your mastering.
Cheers my friend. It might be an idea to submit a tune for my “Your Music Live” show it’s perhaps join the “Create Record Release” Facebook group. Http://createrecordreleaae.com.
Hey there my friend. So GarageBand defaults to 8 bars so you may need to jump in and make this automatic or stretch out the number of bars. Here’s a quick video that explains this - ruclips.net/video/CSu90sxBVeE/видео.html
I was really looking forward to using it, but it’s actually 13 dollars.... any other alternatives for mixing and mastering? Cos I’m soon going to start producing trap and hip hop beats
I haven’t found a free or cheaper plugin that does the same job as yet, but you can use the built in limiter and get decent results. I’ll drop a link below to a video where I go through this.
Hey there. I don’t tend to master with FAC Maxima anymore - usually Grand Finale or Final Touch. Maxima is actually great ok individual tracks, especially drums hat you want to really pop.
Namaste.
Thanks so much for your kind words and taking the time to reach out and provide feedback.
Never realized how invaluable these GarageBand tutorials are. Thank you for helping and existing!
Very happy to exist and to help me friend! Appreciate your kind word and support. 👍
I thought that sounded real good Pete. Even an old deaf man like me could hear the difference. Good job!
Haha! Thanks David. Really appreciate the support. 👍
That song is awesome and the plug-in is nicely explained.
Thank you my friend. Appreciate your kind words and support. 👍
I have created some tracks on SoundCloud
BASSIC NATIVE
please check out if possible.
Thanks
those lyrics are brilliant.
Thank you my friend. Appreciate it.
My whole album is being recorded in GarageBand on IPhone 8. So this is what I’ll use to master in the end! Thanks !
This is a really good song, Pete. Nice lyrics too.
Thanks Curtis. I can’t actually remember which one it was. Will have to watch the video again. 😄
Amazing your helping people with their dreams if this is there dream keep it up!
Thank you! I already knew you would be an awesome person when I saw the Simpsons avatar. Appreciate your support. 👍

I love this song !
Thanks my friend.
I love this song!!!
Cheers my friend! You can check out the finished product of my music by searching “Pete Johns” on Spotify, Apple Music or your fave platform. 👍
This is so awesome. I’m working on a 5 or 6 track solo acoustic EP I’m going to finish this year.

Thanks my friend! So glad my videos have been useful for you. Coincidentally I just released another mastering video just today!
Awesome
👍🙏🤘

Pete Johns sir plz share me fac maxima bcoz don’t have enough money to purchase this plugin
I suggest you check out my video about mastering in GarageBand without any plugins - ruclips.net/video/_KmHiTSJf9U/видео.html

Man this app changed everything for me. It literally makes EVERYTHING pop. Gives EVERYTHING a more professional sound. Best $10 I ever spent.
It is definitely an awesome little app!
Your energy is awesome
Thanks my friend! It took me a while to realise that the camera seems to drain energy pretty quickly, so I need to bring a little extra. It makes things more fun for me too. 🙂
Nice track n nice song sir

The main thing is...keep up the great work. You’ve encouraged me to make even more use of my iPhone 8 studio.
Awesome! That is totally my goal with this channel. If people are creating my music I consider that I’m successfully contributing.

Hi Pete,
Do you have a video on time signature understanding 4/4 etc? Nate
Hey there. This one should help - ruclips.net/video/gRPBQovD1D0/видео.html
Thanks Pete
You're welcome my friend. Thanks for your ongoing support.
Grand Finale from KLVGR (Klevgrand Produkter Ab) is available for the iPhone. It’s a full fledged mastering app. I can recommend it.
Agree. I really like Grand Finale as a simpler option for mastering on iPad or iPhone. ruclips.net/video/K4Pa8SVOiqk/видео.html
Definitely sounded better after the plug in. Still trying to hear the subtleties of the various adjustments you made. How can you tell your track volume can compete with other songs?
Thanks. And good question. What I might do is do a “reference track” demo as I mentioned in my recent video.
I love your music my main man I’m gonna purchase never to Blaine that is talent here in Maryland
Awesome! Thanks so much for your support. 👍

Thank You!@@PeteJohnsMusic
Any time!
Sir can you make for me a track for my song I liked your music
Sounds great man! Too bad Maxima costs 10€ now.
It’s worth considering for sure. The developer is a really good dude and supports his apps well.
Well.....it EQs and compresses....in a noticeable way....I think you’re there.
👍😎
Sir plz share me fac maxima
FAC Maxima is available on the App Store my friend - just search “FAC Maxima”. Thanks for watching. 👍
