This is, by far, the most informative and easily accessible Garageband tutorial site on the internet - full commendation to Lewin for putting in the time and effort. A few questions (and bear with me, I'm a novice): 1. At the mastering stage, do adjustments to compression settings, etc, actually override all those already made in the individual tracks, or is the result additive/cumulative? I was wondering, for example, what is actually happening to those settings, when something like 'Fast Attack 4 Band' is applied, at the mastering stage, via the Multipressor. Am I replacing my earlier adjustments, or in some way, adding to them? And does it matter? 2. after exporting as an AIFF file, does anything further need to de done with that file? I've seen some tutorials where the mastering is actually done on the AIFF file - or is this just for scenarios where a collection of tracks are being readied for album format? Thanks.

You didn't include how to make the different song parts go under or over the different levels in the meters/plugins. I assumed it's by changing the volume/volume automation for the loud parts. Great video!
First of all what is mastering? No one has ever come up with a concrete definition. Every mastering engineer makes it sound like it's some magic trick y'all are performing. Are the universal basic concepts and principles that every engineer needs to learn? If there are, what are they? If they aren't why call yourselves engineers? What are examples of well mastered music recordings? More importantly what are examples of poorly mastered music recordings? These are some of the burning questions I as an hobbyist amateur music producer have regarding mastering but no one has ever answered to my satisfaction. Still, I appreciate this tutorial.
Thanks Lewin for all your videos, there is a video that you have but I don't remember which one it is and you mention to go to preferences and on advance settings unclick the export at full volume, if I am exporting AIFF and than mastering, I should un click that or just un clic that always for a better mix and master, thanks have an excellent day and weekend.
I must be missing something. I have done this but when I export from garageband, it seems the same. What I mean is I have changed the dB gain in the EQ from zero to 5dB and when I export it, share export song to disk mp3 format, then open it in itunes, it is the same volume. I figured if I set the master track to gain of 5dB it would export louder... not the case? So am I exporting the master track correctly? Everything I do sounds nice when in garageband but when I export it, the song is quiet. Under perferences advance I do not have auto normalizer checked, I read where that could make things quite. GaragebandandBeyond may seem like a simple question... but when I have all the tracks and do the mastering you show here... that goes to the master track right? So when I select share export to disk, what is it exporting? The master track or all 11 tracks? Ten original tracks and the master as one exported file or just the exported master track? I see no way to say only export the master track

Hi, thanks for the great video but I don't understend. I put a meter on master and set VU near - 1 on loud part. I put another meter in rms and set near - 10 but the garageband meter is red clip. After bounce master and look the wavefoem there are many square clip. Why? I do the same things of the video. Thanks in advance for the reply.
Make sure that the "Normalize" box in NOT checked in your Garageband preferences.
@@GaragebandandBeyond I'm having the same issue. When I bumped up the RMS standard like you did it really bumped up the volume and sounded fine in the mix, but the exported clip (uncompressed 24 bit and without the normalize in preferences) and then dragged that back into the mix, it was just too clippy. How do you make the music loud at export without the clipping??
OK nvm, i should've just dragged my export into a new mastering project, not the mix so it sounds better now. Oopsy
