Another reason for the design of the gandalf/churchwarden pipe: the longer stem keeps the bowl out of the way if you're trying to read (something churchwardens often wanted to do while enjoying a smoke)
Keeps it away from your face, too. Getting smoke up your nose is still getting smoke up the nose, lol. They have pipes called "nosewarmers" - I have one. They're alright, but man, if the wind shifts even a little bit, you're gonna get a nose full of smoke and it SUCKS. Doesn't happen with the churchwarden.
That's why I use a church warden as well It sits better in the mouth out of the way and you can do things not just read not just study but use your hands I have a long stem for chilling out and a shorter stem for activities.
Long stem is great if your lazy like me and like to lay down while you smoke. Can rest the bowl on my chest and still smoke
Can confirm, a churchwarden makes reading or relaxing very comfortable as the bowl can rest somewhere out of the way. My churchwarden also has the largest bowl in my collection (about an hour of smoking time), so it's perfect for enjoying a good book.

Ive been a pipe guy for over 20 yrs. There is so much awesomeness in the pipe World. So many options! But just like in the Whiskey Tribe. Smoke what you want outta what you want. Its your journey!
Are you worried about cancers ie:do you inhale
IronFungus23 IronFungus23 inhalation does not determine the causation of cancer, the substance you are smoking does.
As with all carcinogenic‘s there is an increased risk however the large majority of pipe smokers do not inhale. There are exceptions of course. But no you need not inhale it’s recommend that you don’t but definitely don’t have to inhale. Also that while different shapes are meant for different tobaccos is bullshit sorry but what you smoke and what you smoke out of is all up to you if somebody says otherwise there full of shit. Different pipe and different shapes all smoke completely different and from there you develop your own preferences if I’m smoking an English blend I don’t typically like very large bowls and different geometry’s for pipe will effect the smoking characteristics but when he’s talking about tall slim bowl being what you smoke out of yes it will be cooler which helps it burn cooler. But 99% of the time who fucking care your pipe your tobacco your tast palette your choice your journey. And yes there is a lot of info out there. Look at the info learn the info but ultimately it’s not gospel truth it’s about you. And you alone.
Jesse Willson
Except it does. There’s no smoke in your lungs if you don’t inhale
The dude in the video is half up his own ass on some of the shit he was talking about take it with a grain of salt if you want to get into pipe smoking buy a pipe you don’t need to spend a shit ton of $$$ on one corn cobs are a great place to start fill it up there are a lot of different ways to do it and it’s all up to you just go for it and it’s easy as all hell to figure out what your doing don’t let the vast amount of info and opinions out there decide what you should do or have to do. Just go for it and you’ll love it or you might not.

As a pipe smoker, he was putting way too much emphasis on the style of pipes. While there will be a small difference in the experience based on the style of pipe you use, it will be such a small difference that a beginner will not be able to tell the difference. Really, the best beginner pipe is a standard Corn Cob, and then you expand your collection and try new things. You will overtime get to know what tobacco you like in which pipe, but that is something advanced smokers do, not beginner or intermediate smokers.
What a beginner should focus on is just getting good at packing tobacco, the rhythm of smoking, and generally trying to figure out what they like. You should probably by a small amount of a lot of different types of tobacco, just so you can get that variety. When you start to understand what you like, you will begin to gravitate towards certain types of tobacco. One of my favourites is Haunted Bookshop, because I like that slightly sweet chocolate/coffee tobacco flavour. But you won't get there unless you try things.
About the rhythm, at the beginning you're probably puffing too damn hard :) Almost everyone I've tried to teach pipe smoking does that. Take little "sips" from the pipe, exhale, take a breath without the pipe, then resume. It will probably go out but it's better to be relighting the pipe than smoke it too hot.
@@digitalspecter
Ya! Your pipe going out is completely normal. Tobacco doesn't burn as easily as people think. Cigarettes are usually kept lit by the burning paper, but cigars and pipes need continual human input to stay lit.
@@mattbenz99 Cigarettes also have chemical accelerants added into them, which pipe and cigar tobacco doesn't. Yet another way cigarettes give a bad reputation to everyone else.
I agree, they used to say that the pipe shape should match your face and that was all.

Clay pipes with very long stems were also provided in a lot of colonial taverns and inns because you could break off the part that had been in a previous guest's mouth before you started using it yourself.

Such like Sherlock Holmes, a rogue would need to know how to react if, say, ayahuasca is "accidentally" ingested
For real I thought about deems when he talked about seeing god.
Hey Joe, does this pipe taste like DMT to you?
You'd think Sherlock Holmes would've smoked an English blend but Watson complained about the nasty smell of the shag tobacco Holmes smoked. Shag is a type of cut. It's often that finely cut tobacco which was and still is usually for rolling your own cigarettes and is not known for its great quality.
Yeah Holmes was in it for the stimulant not for the enjoyment.

Now, Ward...
Would you rather be a Zoomer dad who is a phone master who reminisces about memes or a 50s dad who sits in good chair reading the paper while smoking a pipe in his house coat reminiscing about the war?
I’ve been pipe smoking for a little while now but the concept of different bowl shapes being better suited to different blends is a concept I’d never heard of. Typically I’ll just stick whatever’s cheap into an old cob.
Same, I’ve heard of different bowl sizes for different cuts but not different blends
There can be a tiny difference but I don’t think it’s worth spending the first third of the video on it. I especially disliked the way he just dismissed cobs like they’re basically shittier briars. The fact is they’re often as good as and even better.
@@raphaelgomes2947 agreed. I got started on cobs and enjoyed them. I like that they require less break in and, while not as durable perhaps, they seemed to me to provide just as good of a smoke as the briar I later purchased
Would love a part 2 to this on proper etiquette and the things to do and don't with pipes, such as how to handle them and how to clean them properly. As someone in the pipe business myself I feel these are important things for everyone to learn when smoking a pipe. Improper cleaning could ruin someone's pipe smoking experience just as fast as smoking a pipe too hard.
And not putting someone else's or a shop's pipe in your mouth... ever.
A few things: During WWII various covert groups (OSS, SOE, SAS) would hide tools inside pipes including compasses and bladed weapons for use in an escape situation.
The clay pipe he showed was abrasive and when they recovered the submarine Hunley the archaeologists were able to determine the pipe smoker on the crew from the facets ground into his teeth from holding a clay pipe stem.
When he mentioned intellectuals that smoked pipes my first thought was Stalin. Related is that in Russia cigarettes were a sign of the upper class while a pipe was a symbol of the common man so Stalin would shred two cigarettes into his pipe so he got higher quality tobacco while looking proper.
Finally "The secret lies with Charlotte"
Stalin smoked Dunhill Royal Yacht.

Two clowns with a good heart try and learn from a very patient man lmao I love it you guys are awesome!
Tobacco guys: you have to load a bowl perfectly for the right airflow and pull
“Herb” guys: Heehoo put in bowl
Being from both worlds I find that going about packing my bong or glass pipe the same way I'd pack my briar I get a better smoke. Gravity feed, a gentle shake, then a light tamp with my index finger. The difference lies in lighting. With herb I want a hot flame to catch the whole surface quickly and the pipes being glass I can do so with a small torch lighter similar to a cigar lighter. When lighting a tobacco pipe I use a soft flame Zippo pipe lighter doing a false light to evenly char the top, tamping it flat making sure the charred bits get into an even layer, then lighting it fully.
@@themadscientest facts i haye people who pack bowls hella tight or don't break up their weed enough its a waste and ruins the draw
@@jamesbutler2309 Plus I've Essentially stopped messing with cornering, lighting a bowl evenly gives you a better smoke rather than burning down one side and leaving lots of still green bud dottle stuck around the bottom of the bowl that ends up getting accidentally dumped with the ash.
@@themadscientest i only corner bowls if im smoking w my homies who have high tolerances since they mainly just smoke weed for flavor and take dabs and hit carts too get high

I've been waiting for this episode for so long! I was not disappointed, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Watching this with a pipe in my mouth. I prefer a very long stemmed pipe for cooler smoke, my favorite tobacco (Sweet Dublin) is a mixture of Cavendish and Virginia tobaccos flavored with irish whisky.
That sounds wonderful...
Good shout, I am smoking American Cherry and Vanilla at the moment.
I smoked a pipe in my early 20s, then quit smoking using a vape, but I want to carve another pipe and start smoking again.
I used to load my pipe thusly: gravity fill to just below the brim, gentle tamping with thumb or forefinger, light with match to allow the top to char, then add a bit more tobacco, filling to the brim, and tamp just a little bit down until it's compressed enough to hold itself together, then give the final light, again with a match, and puff gently a couple of times until the whole thing catches.
For people struggling to light matches in a slightly windy environment, keep a small knife with you and make some gentle shavings on the corners of the matchsticks, allowing the wood shavings to gently curl towards the matchhead. These will catch on fire after a moment and keep the match lit more easily.
I guess you could sharpen the "blade" of one of those 3 in 1 pipe tools for the match trick. Pretty cool, I'll have to try that.
You bring shame upon yourself and home for trading the art of piping for....dear Lord I hate the very word....vApInG.

As a smoker, that moist tobacco looked so good. I can’t imagine the delicious smoke coming from that. (Also fun fact my grandad used to smoke a pipe, not very professionally but he would always put fruit peels in his tobacco to keep it moist and give it a flavor. Every time MR is doing an episode on drinking or smoking it's very tempting to start. Even if I know it's not healthy.
MR: ya like pipes?
Me:yeah I do now
Great episode. I've been smoking a pipe for about two and a half years so I'm still close enough to starting to remember all of things I did wrong. This definitely covered the majority of them. The one thing I'd have liked to see was cleaning and care after smoking. I may also have not focused so much on the shapes and what tobaccos to smoke out of them. While everything he said was entirely true in terms of bowl shape/size matching better with certain types of blends, it's entirely optional and only necessary if you want an entirely optimal experience. When you're just starting, grab one that looks cool and smoke whatever smells good in the moment.

right... I've never wanted to smoke, I'm no going to smoke, BUT.. THAT is just cool, I might just go buy a pipe
Cigarettes really give "smoking" a bad reputation. Pipe tobacco is JUST tobacco, and maybe some cordial to flavor it. There's nothing in there to make you more likely to form a dependency, you won't get hooked (on the actual tobacco) and you won't have withdrawal. I can safely say that I can quit smoking my pipe whenever I want to - I usually do when the weather turns cold, because I smoke outdoors.
I smoke outside because of my lease, not because I can't smoke inside. Cigarette smoke is nasty stuff, it stinks, and you can tell when someone smokes indoors because the smell lingers for days. Not so with a pipe. If you've ever burned incense inside, that's about what to expect from a pipe. The room will smell for a bit, but it's gone in about a day. The aromatic that I smoke is called 'Rum River' from JM Boswell in PA, and it smells like chocolate, coffee, and caramel. My girlfriend likes it and says that it smells like "camping". Cigar smoke smells like Cuban armpit. Don't get me wrong, armpit stank is "manly," but it's not for everyone.
Pipe smoke *is* unfiltered, which is a problem. You can get cancer in the mouth, and upper throat, but rarely in the lungs (don't inhale). And I suppose that there are people who smoke pipes constantly, like a chain-smoker, but they're few and far between. I smoke maybe 5 times a month when it's warm, and none at all in the winter. Sit out on the deck with a book and a drink and some music, and just chill for an hour or two.
If you want one, I think you should definitely get one. There's definitely a community around it, a little insiders' wink & nod type stuff, and there's a ritual. I did it for the ritual. I used to smoke a lot of herb, and what I found I missed wasn't getting high, but more the hands-on ritual of packing/rolling and sitting down for a smoke. Pipes gave me that ritual again, but without any risk of losing my job.
May I add, that generally the closer to the center of briar that a pipe is made from the better smoke you’ll get. The reason for this is because the water tubes from the burl are more equally and evenly spaced around the bowl. These tubes draw moisture from the tobacco as you smoke it and draw the moisture out more evenly. Again, generally the closer the pipe was made to the center of the briar burl the more expensive a pipe will be.
I mean you just have to do snuff and dipping tobacco after this.
No...
Swedish snus😄, but i hate the dipping tabacco (all unpacked tabaccos in general)
Dip is NARSTY!
Brian swallows from the spit cup, reset injurt counter lol
I feel like dip and chew isn't really the look they are going for with the channel. But I do both myself. I'd like to see it.
Your guys videos are the only thing i can enjoy during the quarantine. Thank you so much, these are so enjoyable.
Day 14 of covid lockdown with no booze.
Think I've gone deaf in my right eye!
😜😂
I love these videos you guys make. Very eclectic. I love the cigar and now, pipe vids.
I just quit smoking cigarettes and switched to vaping 6 months ago. It was at the worst time possible with people hating on it. But would like cigars from time to time, and my wife said a pipe is ok outside the house.
Although I'm sure people would want it, don't do a vape one. That's way too hipster. It's not classy enough, despite what some would say.
Stay classy Modern Rogues!
Let’s see the boys make some vape cloud rings with some Subaru WRX owners haha
I drive a Legacy Outback........ And have RayBans but I need them to see..... And have a beard but I've worn flannel since the 90's.
Damn hipsters stole my style
I honestly just dont want them to breathe in anything. Maybe thc concentrates but no extra additives.
Guy constantly talking with the pipe in his mouth seems incredibly pretentious
was gonna comment the same, and thought maybe he either wanted to do the type (which felt kinda stewped or was obliged to by his employer to sell moar pipes, lol)
Especially when he’s not smoking it.
Nah man. Pipe tobacco tastes good even when it’s not lit. And sometime the pipe can still be going but there’s little to no smoke.
Wellllll.....it is part of the look. Any enthusiast will sound exactly the same. Perhaps there is something in your life that you enjoy down to the last details? Cars..Electronics...mototcycles.
.scrapbooking? You would sound as prentetious to a non-enthusiatic person.
As a cigar smoker this was very helpful. I'm sure my pipe isn't smoking perfectly but I'm getting it to work and I like the long gentle puffing. I got a cherry flavor and it's really nice
