When I try to do so, I get overwhelmed with anxiety that I'm wasting time and I should be doing something useful. However, your videos remind me that life is a gift, not just a responsibility, and that it is just as well spent in soft gentleness as vibrant motion. I'm still a pretty young fellow. Not quite as young as you but still certainly not aged. Could I just make a recommendation to you? Maybe, consider picking up a corn cob pipe and a delicious tobacco like Petersons Sunset Breeze? It always helps quiet and calm my mind. Specially after long days. Also, poetry helps. One particular poem that I think of often during my busier days is one that goes like this, "the silence with its gloved hand tames the wild Hawk of the Mind." Our Generation has lost the gift of being able to sit in quiet, allowing it to slow down our busy mind and busy heart. I know what the world and medical professionals say about smoking tobacco. I get it. But, it has been one of the most special gifts to my life that I have currently. Not a joke. Best wishes to you on our short but most meaningful little existence and time on this Earth. I also have experience with usage of tobacco and in my family people's health has been damaged very badly by it. One has died. Another has to use supplemental oxygen. Maybe it is wrong to use sentimental mental tricks to justify something so blatantly destructive to the human body?

'Ogden's Walnut Plug - Sweet as a Nut' ' was my Dad's tobacco choice. As a little girl I loved the dark brown, plugs of tobacco with the blue, red and yellow paper bands round them - smooth and glossy in your hand like dark horse chestnuts. I was fascinated by the way he shaved off slices with a penknife and rolled them between his palms before packing his pipe and lighting it. A ritual that seemed to bring him a kind of peace after the stresses of the day.
Every Christmas as children we saved up our pocket money pennies to buy one as his gift.

I just found your channel, sir, and after watching a couple of your videos I feel like I've met a new friend, a kindred spirit. To be still is an art that escapes so many today. I need to consciously remind myself to slow down, and my pipe is a great help. Unlike other forms of smoking, pipes involve a process which forces one to slow down and focus on the task at hand... selecting the pipe and tobacco, packing the bowl, lighting, tamping, relighting, tending to the embers... One cannot be in a hurry and properly smoke a pipe. It's a contradiction. Thank you for your thoughts and creating a worthwhile corner in the Internet.

a long time ago i stumbled onto Alan Watts who mentioned something about peoples fear of sitting quietly with their own thoughts as opposed to constantly surrounding themselves with noise, whether its talking, television, music or some kind of background racket. he pointed out how it's almost irrational to simply sit quietly and explore your mind. meditation in other words, but not really? he was encouraging his (i guess they were students?) to give it a try. just be quiet, be still, and think.
i am not a meditator but i am a "sit quietly and think"-er and i always have been. i just never realized until that day that it can be a struggle for others. i simply avoid noisy people whenever possible.
so anyway, it was also around this time that i mentioned this rambling line of thought to my son, who was around 12 or 13 at the time, and how it intrigued me and gave me something else to sit quietly and think about...
my son took it to heart and still will turn off all his devices and music and just sit in his room and think. he came to me shortly after that particular discussion to tell me he had taken that same philosophy to his friends. one of them was confused ... but actually gave it a shot. apparently he turned off the noise, sat in a chair in his room and explored his own thoughts for about an hour. his conclusion was that it was WEIRD.... yet... satisfying. He was able to sort out a lot of problems (what problems could a 13 year old possibly have? lol) but he ultimately liked the results.
ironic isn't it? you can get a lot done by doing nothing!

Sherlock Holmes indeed! As a young man I took up pipe smoking because I thought it gave me character and gravitas. Mostly, it gave me a sore tongue. But I loved it anyway and smoked for quite a while. I lived in Chicago at the time and was very fond of the custom, aromatic Three Star blends from the downtown tobacconist Iwan Reese. Three Star Blue was my favorite of all and it was reasonably priced in those days, the halcyon 1960s and '70s. Then, smoking was allowed, even welcome, everywhere. If someone in a bar or restaurant was leery of a pipe smoker being nearby, once I had lit up and got the pipe going, they were not only surprised at the depth and beauty of the aroma, they often complimented me and said they never knew a pipe could smell so good. I went so far as to carve my own Meerschaum in a Danish style and I was quite pleased by the result. Eventually, my wife needed to quit smoking cigarettes and I put my pipes aside to help her. I don't regret that decision, but I often miss the relaxing ritual of filling, lighting, smoking and minding a pipe.

It is half past midnight in Southeast Texas, USA. There is a quiet cool breeze blowing across the river that once separated the Spanish and French Empires attempts at North American conquest. The few remaining old leaves are gently rattling against the new ones. The city is at peace for the moment. I took the opportunity to indulge in that peace with my pipe and a bowl of Virginia leaf.
Thank you for making this moment even more enjoyable, and if a may send your way a proper southern God Bless You.

Absolutely wonderful! I picked up a copy of the book this week and adore what you had to say in it! It’s too easy to miss the joy in ordinary pleasures, and God’s presence on that joy. Thank you for helping restore some of that beauty!

How delightful a video on an otherwise rather abrasive platform.
I've been considering taking up the pipe myself, and I do think that I may have made a decision at last.

I was gifted my first pipe, which i had intimated to a friend, this last Christmas past. It has instinctively taken its rightful place,as a place of peace, joy and refuge from the mad bad world. Your poem was beautiful, and sums up my feelings exactly,so i need add no more, except to say, thankyou for sharing your truths. I will look up Ordinary Saints,as i would like to have a hard copy. God bless, and best wishes.

I recently discovered your channel and I watch this while smoking my own Peterson pipe on my back porch in Florida this breezy and comfortable evening listening to frogs and birds in the pond and distant barking dogs. The rumble of a train and some cars further off. Quite wonderful, and thank you for your time.

This literally brings tears to my eyes listening and contemplating how much pipe smoking and meditating brings us to God's Holy nature and a more closeness to understanding what He has in store for us. Thank you so much for this time.

I ended up buying 3 of those books...one for myself and two for family members...and what a great couple pages on Glory alone! Fantastic book...can't wait to read the rest of it! And, of course, I'm going to read the section on pipes - even though you've read it to us already! Happy piping!

smoking a pipe makes you more contemplative about everything and brings a sense of calm to the mind like nothing else. Tobacco when it is not raped by chemicals by big cigarette companies is a lovely sacred herb.

I love watching ppl enjoy the things they enjoy. The simple things are the best. Resding a good book. Drinking a nice cup of coffee. Feet propped up on at ottoman. Bust out a pipe,. In my case, filled with Marijuana and just sit back and enjoy yourself. Nothing fancy but it the best part of life.
