    • @lostthoughts73
      @lostthoughts73 5 лет назад +2

      Actually, it depends on the company and the flavour. I used to melt my ice cream a little a lot to enhance the overall taste but eat it before it melted completely. That makes it feel like an ice cream with a extra flavor coating. But, as I said, this doesn't work with all flavours. For example, strawberry tastes so sweet that I just puke it out, but mangos get a nice sultry texture this way. Also, you can use the melted ice cream to work with the toppings. Try adding some chocolate syrup to a vanilla ice cream but instead of eating it instantly, swirl it around in the bowl letting it melt a little so that it now feels like a chocolate doughnut hole but tastes like ice cream

    Also on a side note: If you are specifically looking for whiskies with a high oil content, you don't have to rely on your or other people's experience. Instead specifically look for non-chill filtered whiskies, which the Bruichladdich happens to be and the rye they try afterwards most probably isn't. Chill filtration is a process that is specifically designed to remove oily components from whisky, because they can make it cloudy at low temperatures.

    Word from a chemist, technically the addition of water doesn’t cause a chemical reaction; it’s a physical process called “partioning”. He described what’s happening properly in terms of water insolubles separating from the water solubles. To partition is to separate, which is a physical action on the chemicals. Just to be clear a chemical reaction requires chemicals interacting in such a way to change at least one of the chemicals into a different chemical.

    In Scotland, people sometimes have water rather than ice. The difference is simply that the ice gradually melts as you drink it, so it has a varying amount of water (depending on how fast you drink) whereas a dash of water stays constant throughout the whole drink. And of course if you prefer it chilled or room temp. Water/ice drastically changes the taste of whikey (generally brings out sweeter flavours) so I always like to try a new one with and without ice and then decide.

    This guy knows a ton about scotch but I have one complaint. He hays this is a very smokey scotch, goes on to describe the whole peat smoke procedure etc.... All good, except that particular scotch "Bruichladdich - The Classic Laddie" is an unpeated scotch. Says it right on the bottle. I have one in my liquor cabinet right now. It's delicious, and has a strong Islay flavor, but no peat.

    • @Unearthing
      @Unearthing 5 лет назад +34

      I thought the same thing immediately. But, smoke doesn't come exclusively from peat fires, though. The barley (and any other grain wanted) can be dried by smoke from e.g. birch wood, too. The Laddie is certainly unpeated, but it has some very subtle smoke nevertheless. My favourite example for non-peated but still smoky flavour is Talisker 10.

      Nah, there isn't anything bad about this video at all, it's great content and very enjoyable listening to. Like TheYarrrr mentioned, it's still kinda funny how he knows almost everything down to the tiniest detail but still takes The Laddie as a representation of Islay's smoky whisky profiles. Certainly, The Laddie is a little aggressive (comes with 50% ABV) when undiluted, but it certainly isn't agressively smoky. Anyone more familiar with Islay whiskies will easily second that. Maybe he thought of Bruichladdich's Octomore Series which undeniably is aggressively smoky.

    • @jcarkesteijn
      @jcarkesteijn 5 лет назад +1

      Just what I thought. Let's just say he was talking about Islay whisky's in general, in that case it would make sense. (I'm a Lagavulin-drinker myself, but I really like the Octomore-series for special occasions - it's too pricey for me to drink every time.)
      I like the tip to add a few drops of water, it really does change the taste. Just subscribed to the channel :)

      I once froze a bottle of gin for my martinis. Freezing improves vodka in that it gains a very oily mouth feel, and I figured since gin IS a vodka, why not? I found out why not. A great martini requires some water dilution, which doesn't happen when the booze has been chilled below zero. You get a fiery, oily martini that tastes like crap. Similarly, with room temperature gin that is shaken, not stirred, you get a watered down, chilled drink where you barely taste the gin. Stirred, the fire of the gin is extinguished, the flavors all come through, and it is properly chilled for enjoyment.

    That Bruichladdich is unpeated. No smokeiness in it.

No need to bother with cheaper whisky, just drink however you like - ice etc. But never chill or mix the good stuff.

    About the coffee analogy. If you want to see some real coffee that will wake you the hell up without being so bitter you can't taste normally for a week. Then check out the Mud Street Cafe in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I had a cup of espresso there that was ridiculously powerful. And it came in what can only be described as a bowl with a handle.

      Bitter coffee and the stigma behind coffee just being bitter all the time comes from years of people being subjected to badly made, old, poorly roasted coffee for years. I wholeheartedly believe that anyone can enjoy black coffee if it's made with fresh beans, roasted well, ground right before brew, measured properly and made well.
      Also, I don't believe you had an espresso if what your drink came in a "bowl with a handle". Espresso is served in a tiny cup, similar in size to a shot glass.
