You should do a video on single edge safety razors. Another vintage style that's on it's way back in. It's more for shaving your own face over getting your face shaved by a pro.
This dude has the chillest voice ever.

That is badass, and this dude is pretty freaking cool!
Fun Fact: Hair has almost the same strength as copper of the same thickness. So you can understand why your extremely sharp, extremely thin blade is going to be suffering damage. You're basically cutting the equivalent of tiny copper wires.
Who you calling tiny? 😊
But not all hair ,right?
It makes citation for its claim or else it gets the hose again...
I've often seen it said, but they don't say in what way- is it as tough as copper against a steel blade, tensile or shear strength etc.
That being said, it's interesting to think that the most infinitesimally small line of metal of along the very cutting edge of a blade is responsible for the scary sharpness.
I've heard stropping is more about straightening that edge if it's been wrinkled, folded or dented by particularly thick hair etc.
Fun fact as well a human head hair averages .003 of an inch
In diameter
Earl: *Holding a straight razor* "You know that the carotid artery is right here."

As a guy who’s had someone shave my face with a straight razor, it is simultaneously the most relaxing and terrifying experience of my live
I actually love getting a straight razor shave. It's also really cool to see someone flex their skills.
It's not so bad for me until they get to the throat then I start getting scared
I've been getting straight razor shaves at my local barber for years; they're really good at it. The shave has always been my favorite part of the haircut at a barber shop.
I know several guys who say that a straight razor shave is on their bucket list. I always suggest they just ask their barber next time they're getting their hair cut, but none are game enough. People are often surprised when I tell them that I've had one before. I wasn't that concerned, and actually enjoyed it (Although my face did feel pretty raw afterwards) Overall, I don't think I'd be willing to shave myself with one, but certainly will get a shave from a professional with one again.
Yeah it’s just Sweeny Todd on repeat in my head for me. Not gonna happen
This man is the Bob Ross of shaving. Such a soothing voice and patient character.

Ditto, this guy is great, funny and has great chemistry with both... and that voice
The third rogue
Didn't he say something about knowing how to use butterfly knives and stuff? That's a reason for him to come back
"It will cut down to the bone before you even feel it" is one of the scariest sentences I have ever heard.
Having cut myself a few times, it's way better being cut with a sharp knife than a dull one. Sharp knives tend not to hurt and heal real nice. Dull ones hurt and don't heal as clean.
@@JZStudiosonline It would only make sense too, the cut is just cleaner so there is less damage - relative to the dull blades' damage of course.
@@JZStudiosonline The only safe blade is a sharp blade. Too many people dont realize this :/
@@JZStudiosonline I can absolutely confirm this. I didn't actually get cut by a knife in this case, but a papercut from a plastic folder. It was a few mm deep into my right thumb, nasty cut and it bled a lot for how small it was. Scarred as well, since plastic isn't really that sharp. Years later, still there.
I actually dropped my straight razor once, swung my hand up to catch it instinctively, cut straight to the bone on my left hand, didn't even notice until about ten minutes later when I was getting dressed and suddenly my t-shirt was red
The clothes, the face, the voice. This man was created to educate others about straight razors.
I bought a straight razor 3 years ago and shaving soap. I think it cost me about $120.00 in total. You know how much money I've spent on shaving supplies in the past 3 years? $120.00.
I'm the same way with double edged safety razors. I've probably spent about 150 dollars total for the first year, and spend about 45 dollars a year on blades and a fresh container of soap. I would make the switch to straight razor, but I'm too much of a klutz to risk it.
Best to leave it to your barber.
@@burritodog3634 Shaving soap is about it. It lasts a lot longer than the canned stuff.
@@darylcheshire1618 I tore my face up the first time I used the straight razor. It took about 3 shaves before I got the hang of it.

As fearless in death as he was in life.
As a professional barber with a passion for straight razor shaving (it’s what got me into the biz), and someone that has been using a straight razor since July 2013, I love that there is a video on such a large channel, and that Earl is dishing out a lot of good information. There are really only a few fairly minor items I would correct on the technique. Great job Earl.
27:58 Earl gets real nervous(rightfully so) then some really good blade safety for the situation at 28:08.
29:22 in my opinion it is easier to shave someone else than shave yourself.
No way Jose, you get the feel of your face and can manoeuvre it how you like
I cringed with the blade hand off over his face as well. That could have easily been terrible. I’ve been shaving with a straight razor for over ten years myself.
@rockeysingh8841 yes, but you have to be more comfortable shaving in unique hand positions, since you can't stand behind yourself to shave and you ideally have to see your razor at all time
“It can cut to the bone before you even feel it” as someone who has sliced their lip wide open while shaving with a straight razor that couldn’t be more true, I didn’t even know it had happened till there was blood running down my chin.
How much did it hurt after a minute?
Thanga Meenakshi it honestly didn’t hurt as bad as you would think it was only really painful when I accidentally bit my lip after it happened 🤷🏼♂️
@@benrolen6367 Really? I thought the adrenaline just kept the pain away for a bit. Wonder why that is.
Thanga Meenakshi im not sure but it was just more of an annoyance then anything🤷🏼♂️
@@benrolen6367 Ik this comment is a year old and what i say might be bs BUT i heard that paper cuts hurt very badly because lots of the chemicals in paper and tiny pieces of it are broken inside, whereas if you cut yourself with a straight razor it could not be cleaner and i feel like thre would just not be much to irritate the wound.

This had more suspense and dark comedy than any movie I've watched in the last 20 years of my life
They mentioned them before, but if you’re looking for a close shave with less chance of maiming yourself, a safety razor will also do an amazing job! They’re very inexpensive, and blades for them are dirt cheap and made of cool shit like tungsten and stainless steel. Also using a brush and either a cream or a soap with exponentially increase the quality of your everyday shave regardless of the tool you use for hair removal.

"Remember that time when you intentionally TKed me when we were playing counter strike?"
**INTERNAL SCREAMING**
The answer to the question of shaving cream, “Do I apply it thick or thin?” has to do with moisture retention. If you apply the cream thin, you run the risk of the foam becoming dryer by the last third of your shaving, causing more drag on the blade (especially in dryer climates). If you apply the cream thickly, the cream and your beard stay moist and soft to the very end, resulting in a smooth shave. This is especially true if you use a brush with shaving “soap” as I do.
Atta boy old cock. That's hellishly true. Add also that soaking the face in hot water( as hot as can be born) for as long as possible is a hellishly good aid. Hey, y'all Young Ricky is right the thicker the cream/foam the more cover there is for the hair underneath and less chance to dry out. Give Ricky old cock a cigar, he's a good hoss.
I keep a clean-shaven face and always apply a very conservative coat of gel. For me personally, any more just feels redundant, but I can imagine "drying out" to be an issue for someone doing shaping work etc.
I also always shave right after a hot shower, meaning my pores are open and the air is humid.
This guy can literally talk about anything and I would listen. He should be on more epsiodes.

Fun fact: in the military, having a beard is a mark of you being a badass because only special operations are allowed to have beards
Or if you have a shaving waiver.
Joe Baldenweg 😂😂
while your not wrong, its only to special ops that have to deal with middle eastern men a lot, because in their culture not having a beard as a man is seen as a bad thing and often times wont speak to a man without one. So if a beard directly helps with the job at hand, then yes. It used to be different a couple years ago tho, anyone that was in a spec ops could have a beard but the got rid of that rule because it "wasn't fair" but then again when does the US military care about whats fair? You have now been giving basically useless knowledge from the basically useless knowledge fairy. Treat it well

You are giving away your experience level old man :)
This was great to watch! I really appreciate it. The interplay between how so many things are available for personal taste, preference, and need versus the few things that absolutely do have to be done in it in a single correct way. Sharp, straight, control, gentle. But what you mix up on your face is up to you. I also really enjoyed the focus on attention and skill and presence instead of speed and convenience. How taken care of a tool properly enables its use for a very long time to come compared to throwaway culture. Or just the shaving, could be either yknow
I agree, I think it's the fact that he makes it clear how dangerous the tool is but we still put it near our face, lot of sensitive bits there and we can all empathize with the visual of slicing a chunk of skin off our faces like removing the skin of an orange.
I've been shaving with a straight razor for some time now. My usual routine is to take a warm/hot bath to open the pores, then use water to lubricate the skin while shaving. Afterwards I'll use a light coat of mink oil to soothe any sore spots.
Wow! Ed was so knowledgeable yet humble about this whole thing. I was enthralled from minute 1.
I've been shaving with a straight razor for half my life, and there's a detail about straight razor shaving that people always seem to brush over which is very important.
A straight razor shave is the safest shave you will ever have. Not because one kind of razor is easier to cut yourself with than another, but because you're conscious of the fact that you're holding a blade. With a safety razor, or a disposable razor, you feel like you're holding a vacuum cleaner for your face, and as a result it's easy to be cavelier about your motions. With a straight razor, you know you're holding a blade, so you treat it differently by instinct.
A bit like a fire arm. My fiance has the problem with knives, she doesn't respect them and always gets cut in the kitchen.
@@lmaolmoo4147 I will advise you not to shave with a fire arm. It's a pain in the proverbial having to strop each bullet individually.
I can see the point you're trying to make, but I still highly disagree that a straight razor is the safest shave.
Sure ppl will be more careful with a straight razor and more careless with a safety razor, but isnt that due to the fact dangerous aspect of a straight razor in the first place?
brianv3ntura I appreciate this line of thinking, but it overlooks the main theme, which is perception. People are careful with straight razors because they perceive them as more dangerous than other razors, not because there is a statistical difference in how dangerous they actually are. The counterpoint you are probably thinking right now is “but I can clearly see they are more dangerous”. If you are thinking that, it rather proves the point. The blades of any razor cut just as deep, that’s the point of a razor. If you’re thinking “but that’s why safety razors have that casing” you are correct. That’s also why a straight razor folds away. When you’re shaving, which is more likely to give you a Knick? Hard to get stats on it, but from personal experience, it’s hands down the safety... actually, disposables beat out safety for me, but that’s besides the point. If you do stumble on statistical evidence, I’d be really interested in reading it.
I agree. People think a safety razor can't break and slice you bad. People that handle a straight razor know how to handle a blade in a way they wont make themselves bleed. I've made mistakes with a straight razor but it only cost me a couple drops of drops of blood from a barely noticeable nick.
Got to love how a straight razor ended up being more nerve racking than _surgically implanting a RFID chip into your hand_
"Dad, tell me a bed time story."
"Now many people have died by your hand."
The amount of trust displayed with this video between these two men is incredible.
When he asked the raptor egg question, he genuinely looked like an agent that would be working that type of job, this guy is so damn cool
Earl: *Talks*
Me: *Achieves violent climax*
It's like his voice is dark chocolate-coated, dipped in honey and molasses, then painted with bourbon and gilded with the darkest of dark roast coffees....
Lionel Valentine I wonder if he’s read all the glorified fanfics people have put in these comments
@@JamesDoesStuff0603 If he does, he needs to read them all out loud while Brian and Jason try not to laugh.
omfg this lmfao!
Violent climax 😂
I started shaving with a straight razor like 2 months ago. Takes a bit longer but it’s fun and don’t have to keep buying expensive disposable razors. Great shave too!
Wow! You are one fantastic teacher! And a sense of humour, too.
I have a set of 5 straight razors in their original pouch, but as much as I tried I could not get the blade anywhere within 2" of my face. I would start to shake. Now I'm in my 70s, I don't shave at all since my barber died 10 years ago.
The final exam for my old barber was to shave a peach without cutting it.
Barbarsol was the only shaving cream for me way back when I shaved.
I love when people don’t say “it’s used for murder” and just beat around the bush, then Brian and Jason are just like “He means killing someone.”
Modern Rogues: Let's give Murphy a straight razor!
Injury Counter: Time to clock in for work.
Im surprised it didnt slowly fade in while jason was shaving brian
I love using the bowl and brush mainly because of how it’s easy to change how thin or thick the lather is…and cause it’s just nice to do so
I want this man to teach me everything... like my man over here can reteach me how to wash dishes for all I care. his vocal delivery makes my ears happy.
