BEST Way to Make Crystal CLEAR Ice Cubes!! | Perfect for Whiskey

- Опубликовано: 31 мар 2019
- This is hands down the best way to make crystal clear ice. I have tried many of the ways people claim to make clear ice....and none of them work very well. This is the easiest, cheapest, and quickest way to make lots of perfectly clear ice everytime. No need fo any special water, just a cheap little cooler and tap water and you can pump out all the crystal clear ice you will ever need. And the other great thing about this method for making clear ice is you can make what ever size or shape clear ice you want!! Give it a try and throw a big cube of this clear ice in your whiskey this evening!! Hope you like the vid.

I've found that getting the dew off a unicorn's horn is still the best method, I don't care what anyone says.
Great reply!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think he said it should be under a full moon also.
True, but remember- only on the 4th Thursday of a waxing moon
I agree
That dew is gods precum
" Your whiskey, your money, drink it how you want! " Bravo !
u r gey
in a good expensive whisky you don't put ice or soda or anything else, just a few drops of water.Otherwise you will not appreciate the quality of the whisky
In many bars in Scotland, a place that loves its whisky and holds no small measure in creating the culture of it, there are often small water taps to be found across the length of the bar. Their express purpose is for adding a little water as it suits you and the phrase I was taught there by a wise barman was "By all means add water but add it as if you're paying for the water". A deeply Scottish sentiment all round there I feel.
Gary M. Screw the snobs. That would make a great t-shirt.
@Headtrix 1652 You would only do that with blends or cheaper bourbons. Anything with a strongly decernable character, like single malts, just doesn't play well with others.
"If you don't think you need a freezer to make ice, you probably shouldn't be playing with knives, so ignore this video." Love it!
I think I'm in love.
Or, if you don’t live in Florida, set it outside in the winter. Where I live that might take
I make clear ice the same way. You want to make sure to wait a good while after removing the block from the cooler so that it is well tempered. The reason why we let it temper is because warm ice is ten times less brittle than cold ice. If you were to dive right in and try to cut the block straight out the freezer it would shatter and you would waste a lot of the block. A large block from the 6-pack cooler can take around 30 minutes to temper; wait until it is glossy and wet on all sides. Your patience will be treated with a block that will cut straight and true into nice cubes or strips without shattering.
Absolutely. I was a little disappointed he didn't mention this in the video because it really is important.
Question, I know he mentioned storing the rest of the cubes he made in freezer bags... Is that a good method? And does it keep the cubes you made clear?
@@morghulkale4112 Yes, I do the same. The freezing process is already complete so it will stay clear.
EXCELLENT!!! Did not know why mine we're turning out quite right. Much appreciated
That comment was almost as helpful as the video. Thanks!
I better get wife of the year award after I try this...
Are you kidding!? If I came home after work and my partner had made me clear ice for my bourbon I’d want to give her an award! I’d probably buy her some wine :p
You got it for the attempt
That's worth a diamond😉
Or wife of the century award!

Here I am, barely putting 5 minutes into cooking my food, now spending 24 hours making ice for my drinks for the weekend. Priorities my friend!
🤣🤣😂😂
Hmmm... except, unless you sit in front of the freezer for 24 hours, you don't really spend that much time making the ice. :P
I just done it and enjoyed every sip of blantons with my clear ice 😎🥃
I just watched the video and have my cooler of water in the freezer. Brita filtered. My tap water is from Lake Champlain and heavily chlorinated. The Brita does remove the chlorine taste.
I did this and it works! Yes let it sit it will fall out of the cooler and let it sit it will be so easy to cut. It really makes the drink look classy
Well done video on clear ice. I have used this method for years and it works just as shown in this video!!! the comments about needing clean water to start with are spot on. My local tap water changes in quality ad sometimes will result in cloudy ice, so during those times, I switch to bottled water and it works perfectly again. Two quick tips; 1) when taking ice from the freezer give it about 3-5 minutes to temper so it doesn't crack when you pour whiskey over it as it will ruin the clear ice with cracks, 2) when putting your freshly carved ice in the freezer, it can be very helpful to pull the bag out of the freezer after about an hour and bang it gently on a counter so all the large cubes don't freeze together once they set. Hope you find these tips helpful . . .
I've been doing this for a couple of years now, and two things... one, the cubes self-heal after cracking under the stress of room temp whiskey being poured over them. Within a few minutes, the cracks re-freeze, and the cube is clear again. And, I put the cut cubes back into the cooler and into the freezer for 15-30 min, then take it out and drop it onto it on a hard, e.g. concrete or stone, surface a couple of times, and the cubes generally come apart easily.
Never knew this was a thing. Now I'm obsessed with big chunks of clear ice...
I'm going maverick, more air so it floats higher in the glass. Trendsetting.
Mike Bircher
I know, right? Until ten minutes ago, I couldn’t have given a fig what size, shape, or clarity the ice in my drink was. Now I’m, like, I MUST HAVE huge chunks of crystal clear ice, made from Madagascan rainwater!!!! Without it, my life has no meaning.
I shall start a movement. Nay, a religious sect. Start converting others to the True Way Of Ice. I shall not rest until all heathens and their tiny cubes of cloudy ice have been converted, or cast into the fires of HELL!

My local liquor store carries big clear ice, I just buy a bag there. I too love the big clear cubes.

ARE YOU HAMMERING ON MY KITCHEN KNIVES AGAIN????!!!!!!
Lol, after being married to me for over 10 years now.....nothing surprises her anymore. 😂 She just rolls her eyes and says “here we go again”.
I just didn't get married. I can hammer on my knives all I want...lol
JS needs to add about $20 to his budget for anyone who is married, to buy a basic, serrated knife for cutting ice, because if I hammered my wife's serrated German chef's knife into a block of ice she'd find another use for that knife! =-o

JeremySiers Hey it made Whitesnake famous lol
Jeremy you are so amazing! I have been wondering how this could be achieved at home for years! I recently started my bourbon, whiskey, and rum collection (thanks to you) and clear ice really adds to the experience. Thank you so much for this video.
Absolutely perfect and entertaining. I was blown away by how clear the ice turned out. I've been needing clear ice for ages, thank you so much!
Here's a helpful tip. About ten minutes after putting the cubes in the freezer (I use large freezer bags). Come by and give them a shake. While you're making the cubes, they will start to melt. Putting them in the bag like that and not giving them a "cuddle" or two later will let the cubes freeze together. If you're into cubism, this might be your thing. If not, you'll need to take a hammer to it to break them apart. Cheers.
I put them on sheet tray and let them get the freeze on them first for 30 min, then into a bag. no sticky!

Great video! Very informative. I was impressed (and surprised) by the results of this seemingly simple technique. Bravo, Jeremy.

@@juanavalos4232 Good one!
Thank you for sharing this! Going to start making this for my husband and I, I was going to buy one of those insulated ice cube makers but I thought for as much space as they take up for so little cubes this is a winner and so much cheaper to do! ❤
I was a commercial photographer for almost 40 years in Kentucky. I've photographed Bourbons, Scotch's, Tequilas, Whiskeys, Vodkas, and liqueurs, both neat and in mixed drinks. We used many ice cubes which were all custom made from glass, and expensive. They were also heavy. You would be very surprised finding out how photographers made glamorous photos for ads and billboards. The techniques and equipment involved were expensive and sometimes time consuming. Each photographer or studio had their own techniques but most all techniques were known to all photographers.
Anyone who says to never add ice to bourbon has never been to the south in the summer
I prefer a 1 ounce stone.
Or Australia in summer
So much work and time for ice... and I don't drink whiskey... and still I found the video interesting. Cheers
@@international806yachting The quinine in tonic water would cover up the flavor of the ice, that using a clear ice cube in G&T kinda pointless.
Lots of work for ice. Cloudy is ok,for me. However, nice ice. Beautiful home!
This was AMAZING!!!! I have been making clear ice for years, but never the volume you demonstrated. I LOVE IT!!! This is a game changer.... Especially the knife/hammer method. Thank you Soooooo much.
Loved that video! I’m in the UK and planning a family BBQ with cocktails. I’m so doing this! This is the level of research I’m doing to make everything as perfect as I can. If something is worth doing, it’s worth over doing!

Best vid I've seen yet on the subject. You can spend the "saved" time shaping the cubes, smoothing the edges, etc.
I've had an old cooler like that hanging around for years. Now I know why I haven't thrown it out now. It's so I can make my very own craft ice! Sweet. You're right the silicone products don't work. Already tried that route. Cheers!
Did my first batch and worked like a charm just as your excellent video shows. My Old Fashioned - and a few other cocktails - have been upgraded. Thanks! Also, agree with your comments on ice in whiskey.
Exactly what I was looking for, and I'll give this a shot in a few days. Another slick video from you just waiting for more people to discover it. Cheers from Texas!
Definitely doing it! The cubes are insanely beautiful!
The dew off a unicorn horn!! THAT'S what I haven't tried yet 😂

I've been using this technique for a while now and I am absolutely delighted with the results. I loves me some clear ice in my Bourbon.
Tried this today and it worked perfectly!!!
Thanks for the tip!
Great job, Jeremy--informative, entertaining (even at double speed), and you saved me spending unnecessarily on any special gear--thanks dude!
thank you Jeremy i try it and its work perfectly Love from Morocco 🇲🇦
Awesome video! I have tried many methods and this is easily the best. A good tip for anyone wanting to try this is don’t use a fancy bread knife. It WILL dull the blade faster. Invest in a cheap amazon knife you don’t care about. Also if you refreeze the cubes in a gallon bag they will get foggy when you take them back out. Just put them in the glass and let them sit for a good 5 min and they will be perfectly clear again. Also if you pour liquid on the cubes right out of the freezer they may crack.
This was great, and I'm thinking I might just use this ice for non-alcoholic drinks as well. I might also make a big batch and bring it to a party for people to use.
Can you believe I watched you for 15 minutes just making ice. I subscribed
I make highball and “mizuwari” with clear ice. I landed on your video after seeing a few clear ice videos from Japan. I actually use silicon mold with a hole in individual ice compartment with its own plastic tub that goes into insulated styrofoam basket, which you mentioned a little. I paid about $15 that makes 10 2” cubes, which I’m pretty happy with. Your method will create the best shaped for sure,. As I learned more about clear ice making, I learned that only water freezes during freezing procedure and pushes out the impurity to unfrozen part which you mentioned. So here in New York, our tap water is pretty good and soft, so I just use tap water. Clear ice tastes better for sure that highball has plenty of whisky nuance and subtlety left in the glass. I’ve been trying out with a bunch of different scotch and bourbon bottles. Sometimes with lemon or orange peel. Very refreshing and goes well with a meal. Thank you for a great informative video! Now, I’m going to drink OGD114 neat...
I don't often comment to videos, but I had to for this one. This method works so well! My first try got me a dozen blocks of beautiful clear ice! The textured/shaped sides that result just add to the"cool factor" once this is in your glass with the whiskey!
Whiskey Tribe channel just mentioned your video. Love it when my streams cross.
Fantastic! I drink neat mostly but when ya need a cube this is the only way. Thanks!
I was looking all over the internet for a clear ice-cube maker. When I came across your video, I was intrigued about making my own ice/maker. Thanks, for the excellent information and video.
Just tried it with the same cooler. Works great! Thanks for the video.
I have been doing this for a while now. It really is the best way.
The signs in this guys kitchen are so great, "KITCHEN", "EAT"

So glad I found your channel Jeremy…..fellow Floridian here, this process TOTALLY worked!!! Thanks!!
I really enjoyed this video. I followed your advice and it came out great! I don't always use ice but on the occasion I do I am always disappointed in how it comes out. This helped! Thanks
This is one of the best things I have found on RUclips. I always buy clear ice cubes but they are small, this is by far better. Incredible job. 👍🏻
I've done this exact technique and it worked beautifully. Very impressive ice cubes to delight your guests.
I wish my guests were that easily pleased
Outstanding - You saved me a "Ton" - Thx
Wow! You just solved the mystery (for me) on making clear ice for my whiskey drinking! Lol Great stuff/info. Just purchased the same blue cooler. Can’t wait for it to arrive from Amazon, and try your technique out on my 2 bottles of 1910 &1920 Forester barrel aged whiskeys, and enjoy with a great cigar on a Friday evening after work in my backyard. Thanks!
I live in Alaska, several months, no freezer needed! Ice made on the deck and a side note, i got into good whiskey/whisky after I moved here, duringnthe first fall my beer started freezing up while grilling, obvious solution, winter whiskey/whisky.
The narration was absolutely great, loved it.
Awesome production, thank you for your time and the information!
I ordered the "dew water off a unicorn" from amazon. I had to trade in my magic lamp for it.. But now i have clear ice.. lol
Anyway awesome video.. i always wondered why some of my cubes that didnt freeze all the way were super clear and the frozen solid ones were not now i know.
love the channel.
The imperfections in the cubes really do make it more appealing to look at. Kind of that handcrafted bubbles in the glass vibe, really fits whiskey perfectly. Thanks for taking the time, sir! 👍👌✌
I definitely prefer my imperfect cubes over the molds I used to use (which never produced clear ice anyway). Each one becomes a unique work of art.
Nice - cool to see a reliable method for clear ice!
For what it's worth, it may be easy or worthwhile to do something like heat up a pan and press it down on the ice to remove the top ice shell or to reshape the ice if you're looking for a particular shape (triangle? icosahedron?), or heat up a cheap knife a bit to help make cutting your ice slices a bit easier. May be more trouble than it's worth, but seems like it could be a good way to quickly shape things the way you want them.
I have been trying to do this for years. THANK YOU for this video! My first batch isn’t perfect but I’m tickled to death!!! My friends are going to ge so jelly!!!
Unreal. My wife found this and told me about it. Really thought it was going to be a fail. It worked out perfectly. Was crazy easy. Thanks for the tip.
Bro science level 7 here... JRE needs to interview you! That's a dope method! Thank you sir! Cheers!
I actually learned something, also I dig the content mate, you got yourself a subscriber
Yeah! Thanks for the explanation and insight of directional freezing, that's the key - and your demo of how to cut the ice up. Super! From Berkeley, CA -
I simply refill 8 oz. margarine tubs. Huge clear cubes. No problem.
(well, except for my drinking problem.)
And except that you'd have to buy margarine!
I'll try the empty ramen bowls. Use them now for light shade, android speaker amplifier, soap dish
@@cluny It'll be there forever, may as well use it!! LOL
You still eating margarine :(
I've been using this method for months and it really is the best! Great video!
Btw, you should switch out that hammer for a rubber mallet. You could really damage your knife if you keep using the hammer.
Also, sometimes if the ice is like 2% off from being perfectly snug (like it was in this video), all you gotta do is spin it in the glass with your finger for a few seconds. Most of the time the edges melt down enough for it to be perfectly snug :)
I cringed at the hammer-on-knife. Definitely go with rubber mallet.
Also, hitting hardened steel directly on hardened steel can actually be extremely dangerous. Maybe not from such light taps, but bad habits die hard.
Awesome! What a cool idea! I like the way you present the cold, hard facts about the mystical art of Clear Ice Cubes. The fact you used an Igloo Cooler gives credence to your presentation, it's an idea that could quickly snowball on you.
Thank you for a very clear instructional video on making clear ice! I've heard of using the cooler method before, and watch other videos, but your presentation was very clear, well explained, and well placed.
That being said, I came up with a hack using 1/2 gallon milk cartons and insulating sheets of foam from food delivery boxes.
Cut the top off, wash the inside of the carton, wrap the sides and bottom of the carton with the insulation sheets, fill with water and freeze. Works well
Yay, really happy I found your videos! Nice b roll and great info!!! Trying this ice technique now and adding you on IG! Awesome! Thanks for the sawing and explanation!
I’m a picky ice guy, like just a perfect ice cube for my Scotch!

Jeremy Siers.. Awesome video. I have tried to make clear ice and it never works so thanks for tip. I am definitely going to do this.. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Great video! One suggestion: use a rubber hammer to tap the knife to decrease the chance of damaging it!
Too funny! Came from blues videos, how appropriate. Blues, whiskey, clear ice, and cigar.
Thanks for sharing the secrets to making clear ice! I thoroughly enjoyed your video as your knowledge and crazy sense of humor made the video a hit. Continued success Jeremy!
This was the video that set the hook - the cigar room reeled me in. What a great channel, very much enjoy the videos.
Same!
Just found you in my "Recommended" list. Sometimes RUclips actually gets it right. Actually LOL'ed a couple of times during this one. Subscribed and liked! Now to binge watch until the list is done.
Hey Jeremy, I went to a natural spring a few miles from my home that I use for making my moonshine. Damn that is clear ass ice!
Awesome video, thx! Not sure if anyone mentioned it below but a great DIY project for you is to put a drinking water spout into your sink just like the soap dispenser on the one side of the sink. Can install a water filter under the sink and you're in business. Just tee off the water line going to your faucet, route the new line to the filter and the filter to the new spout. You can fill your cooler much easier/faster, and you now have cooking water that is easy to access. We have the same issue with our water as it comes from a well so the sink spout was mandatory.
I started watching this and realised I had the exact same cooler, a knife, a hammer, and a freezer! I just upped the game on an already classy past time. Thanks for a great bunch of tips. Cheers.
I use my 4 large cube silicone ice tray, just like the one you threw out to sprout my tomato plants.
your tomatoes want holes in the bottom so they cant/wont srown...;), oh and i have other plants....:)
Jeremy, I like your commenters as much as I like you- very rare, indeed. You are doing something right my friend! Instantly subbed. Cheers!
I've seen this trick on Cocktail Chemistry before! Great method and great demonstration, thank you.
Brilliant video! I was looking at the large clear ice cube makers and they are all around the 30 quid mark, so this is fantastic!
Thanks! You hit the cool spot right on the hea... ice!
I would score it with the serrated knife, and then use a clever as the chopping device (it's meant for that). Or just go old school with an ice pick. But great idea on making a large block in a cooler to get the clear starting material!
I tried this and it works the best. Out of all the videos I’ve seen, this is the best method for me.
Wow just Wow! I tried this and worked perfectly! Thank you!
I suddenly want to indulge in some Basil Hayden. Great video.
Whoa,, you really like your ice. Okay, I admit - me too. Seriously, very cool. I'm definitely gonna do this. I work for an Asian airline and my co-workers and I constantly complain about the ice they give us to serve. It sucks. This method really does make sense because it won't melt so quickly diluting.
I'm gonna make the ice blocks, and my girlfriends and I are going to have an ice chopping party! Complete with your rocks glasses and plenty of spirits! I prefer Chivas. The other girls like tequila, southern comfort and gin to name a few. Young Asian women are only good for a coupe of stiff drinks and then,, well you know where that goes. But it's all good fun after a hard day of travel. We try to maintain simple rules. Girls only. Lol...
I'll check back with you and give you a progress report.
Thanks for this, man. There's a bunch of crap out there about making clear ice. Glad to learn a method that works. A good whiskey, if it's gonna be on the rocks, deserves a proper cube. Same with any decent cocktail.
Dude, I tried your method and it works perfectly. Thank you so much! The haters can piss off because if you’re not putting any effort into it then it just doesn’t go down right. A nice cool glass of good bourbon with a single clear cube is a reward in itself and I feel proud of the small amount of work that I put into it.
It’s a man thing as you already know and the ole lady also appreciates the feeling of accomplishment that comes after.
Came over from the Whiskey Vault video, glad I did. Great video, and so simple. I think I'm going to try this out for some of my whisk(e)ys I drink. Thank you sir, new subscriber and enjoy the format.
