Clear ice is an incredible thing. I think most of us grew up seeing nothing but foggy ice cubes, so knowing that this is possible makes the drinks they go with that much more enjoyable. Great video too!
I make at least two batches a week and people thought it was weird at first but as soon as they see the results they always think it's cool, and now I'm known as the clear ice guy.
At times cloudy ice can have an off taste to it as well and when it melts you see the impurities in the bottom of the glass . I stopped using my refridgerator ice machine years ago .
For huge ice balls for scotch - the real simple extention of this method is to use tall insulated stainless steel coffee mug. The difficult part to find one with straight neck. Fill it with water, put in a freezer. Wait a day. Turn over and gently tap over the sink. The top 1/3 - 1/2 will slide out as single block of clear ice. The only trick is not too wait too long - you don't want more than top 1/2 frozen

When light enters 1 ice cube next to lots of ice cubes the light goes in in a different angle and doesnt go through but keeps on reflecting through all ice cubes, and in the reverse prism of light, the colour is white. that's also the reason why a cube is more clear than a ball as a ball reflects differently.
Just tried this yesterday. but I just did a little cut on the top end of the ice block, so the ice kept splitting up uneven. But I used a knife with a uneven blade and a tiny hammer, so I will have to upgrade those to something better for my next attempt. I did end up with 2 bags full of beautiful clear random shaped ice cubes. It is quite fun and the ice looks so much cooler then that old dull cloudy ice cubes you get.

Actually even if you don't care about how your ice looks, clear icecubes are still way better than cloudy icecubes. Since there's no air bubble inside clear icecubes, they are denser and cooler, which makes them melt slower than normal icecubes, so your drink won't get watered down too quick.

Also, that dillution is linked to the chilling of the drink. agestam I can agree with the shaking argument, but that same link also says why big spherical ice isn't always good: as you drink it gets exposed to the atmosphere, which makes the ice melt and dilutes the drink without the benefit of chilling it, as it's chilling the air. I guess one could argue that chilling the air makes the drink stay cooler for more time, since it's not gaining as much heat from the atmosphere. I suspect the differences are all too subtle to matter, anyway... Just pour the ice and drink! If it gets too diluted, add more of the drink! Hahahah

Before this Covid craze, I would always make drinks for my friends with the “nice ice” that I learned from this video. They always though I had bought the ice and were pleased to find out I would make it. It made their experience that much better.
The shapes and the clarity of the ice are so pretty and charming. I don't know how most men would feel about these things, but I think they would be a very special touch to us women.
I'm hooked on clear ice. Since I've been making it, I can't have a bourbon with out it. I make and cut large cubes and rectangles. I have a silicone tray that makes 2 in balls. I cut holes, in the bottom of each mold sphere . It just floats in the cooler so it stays in the clear ice zone. Just make sure the molds are topped off with water.

I'm hooked on clear ice. Since I've been making it, I can't have a bourbon with out it. I make and cut large cubes and rectangles. I have a silicone tray that makes 2 in balls. I cut holes, in the bottom of each mold sphere . It just floats in the cooler so it stays in the clear ice zone. Just make sure the molds are topped off with water.
