WARHAMMER FANTASY LORE: The Halflings of the Mootland - The most peaceful place in Warhammer?

  • The Grand County of the Mootland, often shortened to just the Mootland, and simply referred to as The Moot by its inhabitants, is a very strange land within the Empire. It is blessed with very fertile soil and a surprisingly peaceful ambient, in contrast to the rest of the Empire and the wider Old World.

Ahhh the Grand County of the Mootland! Some say it is the most peaceful place in the world of Warhammer... but is it really? 👀 Special thanks to Adam for his amazing narration through the entire video, to the support voice actors that helped us with this one and to Lo, who helped me greatly researching and writing about this interesting place. We hope you enjoy this lore presentation my friends! It was super fun to put together as this one offered a nice change of feeling to it. We have another video almost ready for next weekend so stay tuned for more info on it throughout the coming week. Cheers!

I was actually thinking about something like that for like a Greek mythological creature. Like if the chickens could also breatg fire or were part horse Lol. It's fun to imagine. Even more so if somehow the halflings were able to tame large beasts, like the size of Stonehorn or something akin to a dragon like a Norscan Frost-Wyrm. Just that as well as being overestimated for their looks and culture, they might be capable beast tamers and skilled at domestication 🤔. Imagine if they had huge dogs, the size of Kislevite bears, hauling cannons or something like a small hillside turned into a kitchen/fortress? 😱💭. The Halflings aren't a major force, but they could potentially be like the More Civilized version of the Ogres. And more homely about it too since they love to farm too, as well as grow and smoke their weed from their pipes. I could definitely see them being used as effective scouts as well since they're cunning thieves as a point of living.

@@trailblazerlazerrazerd9027 I like the huge hauling dog idea more than a half horse half rooster, ''regular '' giant chickens already works for them.
Anyways, hybrid making with magic and gumption is clan Moulder territory, Experts At Selective Breeding though feels like it could suit halflings really well.
Maybe also very stealthy slim pigs for scouting. I guess being able to summon terrain like nettle bushes would also feel thematically appropriate?

I have always loved the concept of halflings/hobbits. Small folk who are just completely unbothered by basically anything. People who devote themselves wholly, mind body and spirit, to life's simplest and most rewarding pleasures. Family, a cozy home, good food, a hard day's work in the fields. And festivities in which said boutiful harvests can be enjoyed by all.
There is a great deal to aspire to in such a people. Life moves so fast, we as a people do need to learn (and facilitate) slowing down and just living.

I love this one and I'm almost equally terrified by how they subtly they might be into some super dark sh** to maintain their people's verdant beautiful landscapes 😅. And it makes me want to know more about the Old World and the cultures, factions, races and nations within it. Which is also surprising that the Halflings seem to be genetically similar to the humans but physically more akin to the dwarves 🤔. They seem to love cooking and have a deep love for Chickens both as food and ride mounts in times of war, which I'm guessing are a special breed considering their massive size 😅📏🐓🗡️🛡️ and the pig mounts just seem to be regular pigs 🤷🏾‍♂️😂 lol. What's also surprising is their close proximity to Sylvania 🗺️🧛🏾‍♂️😳. In my mind, I would think that they were immediate prey for vampires and other such man eating creatures. Yet don't seem to be bothered by them. Maybe once again having to do with the dark powers in their woods 🤔?
This all once again makes me wonder in relation what Afro based cultures exist in Total Warhammer as well if they have any Pacific Islander kinds of nations, or even North American style Natives? 🤔. And if they haven't been made yet, how long they might take to be added in 😯⌛⏳. By region, I know the Dark Elves rule an area on the equivalent of Greenland or Canada. But the closest Afro style faction is the Tomb Kings from ancient Nehekara however there's nothing around that to speak of. Then the world seems to end beyond Cathay besides references to the Empires of Nippon and Ind. As well as the Araby in a region presumably between Nehekara, Khuresh and Ind in relation to our own world map representing the Middle East and North Africa of a sort 🤨. Meanwhile Men & Women of the Empire, or humans for the most part as shown in the franchise seem to be of Western and some Eastern European style descent - the Empire of Mankind, Kingdom of Bretonnia and the Kislevite Tzardom mostly (besides Tilea or the Norscans/Northmen). And now with the Great Bastion Empire of Cathay. But Mootland seems to be much like the Lord of the Rings sort of Hobbiton with the Shire, in lush green hills, plenty of sun, river water and a nice lakebed, even a bit of a wooded area (despite how deceptively menacing it is). I mean to mostly say it's similar to Ireland but also maybe a bit of Wales 🤔.

Naggoroth, AKA fantasy North America used to be inhabited by centaurs but they got retconned hard out of the lore for reasons I don't understand at all. It's all Dark Elves, Norsemen, and Harpies now :-(.
Lustria, has Amazons, who are very weird in lore, being basically like the albionese a human population fostered by the Old Ones....Lizardmen as it's native peoples.
There was a plan for a seperate lustrian halfing culture to be added to the 'verse but that never quite went through.
Araby is actually detailed enough to get a solid read on them, basically djin binding fuels nearly everything in that culture, they have camel riders, cavalry with scimitars, war elephants, flying carpets, magical ropes and more. They grow coffee as an export and are very often in conflict with the Tomb Kings. It's very far from the best representation of arabia but it's something at least?
I have faith that CA will handle it well if they ever adapt it.

    • @Sara3346

The Chaos Dwarves also represent broadly ancient Mesopotamia/Babylon so there is that to consider for cultural diversity too.

    • @trailblazerlazerrazerd9027
      @trailblazerlazerrazerd9027 2 года назад +3

@@Sara3346 I can kinda see why they haven't gone into halflings being a separate culture though. In a world that's literally constantly being beset by war and strife, sometimes even with allies fighting wars against each other for stupid stuff, usually because they were twisted or tempted to do so by the gods of chaos, particularly Tzentch (Greed/Pride), Slaanesh (Greed/Lust) or Khorne (Wrath), these mostly simple and life loving folk aren't gonna ride off into any number of battles like humans or elves do. They'd rather stick behind the battle lines and act as support for the most part.
I do hope to see more cultures like the Araby added in later. And what these character units look like since they still have Mammoths in their fantasy world whereas they've gone extinct here in reality, as opposed to their Much smaller descendants - Elephants. (Unless they look like the Lord of the Ring's Oliphants which were basically mammoth sized elephants driven by the Easternlings into battle). And that Djinn binding sounds Awesome. I can already imagine fiery spirits and maybe men flying on magic carpets shooting arrows from above. As well as a Camel (or more likely, since this is Warhammer we're talking about here, some blood thirsty equivalent of camels 😅) being used as Cavalry mounts along with speedy horses which could be challenged by the Kislevite riders (since a portion of their tzardom is also descended of horsefolk).
Attacking the Tomb Kings does sound about right. Especially since in their vast empire the Tomb Kings apparently had more necropoli than they did cities of the living at one point just like their spacefaring equivalents - the Necron 😱😓😵. I also hope that C.A., as you said might add more in the future. Or at least canonizes some of the former cultures with some spit & polish to them. I mean the Beast Men for one thing could definitely seem more Beastial as they honestly come off more bovine to me just hungry for flesh and destruction above everything else. Maybe throw in some more wolf or bear into their more humanoid unit's physical aspects, in my opinion. Their appearance kinda most seems like if you mix a caveman, minotaur, and centaur together, maybe with Big Foot and give them a deep seeded hatred for humanity in particular.
If C.A. should add in a more African style region, I hope it has lots of Big Cat related iconography - lions, cheetahs, leopards, panthers, etc. As well as Hippos, maybe Gorillas and/or Monkeys like Baboons (both dangerous in their own right). Or even riding mounts like Horses of course, as well as Zebras or chariots driven by Gazelles. And dipping into some African lore like Anansi - the Spider becoming the Trickster god as well as a god of stories or how the Werehyenas came to be involving blacksmithing and possible witchcraft. Although I don't understand how the Snow Elves have those War Lions, that I can't quite figure out 🤔 since Lions in our world don't live in cold climates really. (Maybe they're more like mane growing mountain lions 😅🤷🏾‍♂️, who knows? Lol)

@@Sara3346 About Naggaroth too, I struggle to see how so many reptilians live up there, like the Hydras that the Dark Elves violently domesticated along with the Cold Ones. But most perplexing are the Gorgons or as the series calls them - Bloodwracked Medusae, and instead of turning people to stone, they have the power to make them bleed from any where until the victim dies in a pool of their own life fluids 😅😵😖. As well as the dragons that they find and enslave.
But I digress. I wonder what else they might find and bend to their will? Like Sasquatches or something (Big Foot legend) since Dark Elves are supposed to be a much darker (or equally dark, if you think about it) version of early North American colonists and pilgrims, along with the Norscan Raiders and probably Vampire Coast navies who set up ports along the coast ranging from down in Lustria to as far up as Naggaroth.
And the possibility of Natives as centaurs to the New World sounds kinda incredible. But I hope if they go into it more that there's clear differences involved. Like units that specialize in speed, whereas others are better suited to melee combat, and others can channel their own brand of magic to fire mortars at the coming enemy. And their general opposition usually being the Dark Elves, Norscan pirate raiders, Vampire Coast's undead, some Lizardmen from Lustria below and maybe even forces from the Empire trying to plant Sigmar's banner where it doesn't belong 🤷🏾‍♂️. It's fun to think about 💭😁👍🏾

The tau were introduced as the only good faction, or as close to good as 40k can have. But 40k is 'meant' to be evil vs evil on a fundamental level, so people didn't like a 'good' faction being added. So they were rewritten as only being good by comparison and a very given value of the word - they let you surrender and join them instead of just killing you, but use brainwashing instead. But then the brainwashing part is suggested to be Imperial propaganda.
Although they are still usually portrayed as mostly engaging in realpolitik rather than evil for the sake of evil.
They still think they have a moral duty to conquer the galaxy though

You'd think what with the Mootland being practically the Empire's chief breadbasket and its top tobacco producer would be seen as EXTREMELY vital to their logistical concerns. But that just reminds me that Warhammer fantasy and really this applies for 40k and AOS too, are NEVER about logistics or the overall strategic war, they are about battles and even then I'd argue that most battles are just noisy backdrops for their named characters to make look good as they effortlessly kill scores of mooks which ultimately leads to epic duels between legendary characters that will decide the outcome, not logistics, not tactics, not even acknowledgment for the sacrifices made.
