  • Did you know truckers can still split sleeper on their logs? It's true. Using the very latest in technology visual aids, I show how the split sleeper provision works and how to log it. Even if you have an ELD, EOBR or some other elog, you should know how to split sleeper. Don't just trust the ELD! If there are questions please put them in the comments.

This rule has been in effect for a long time-its not a new law, but was useful back when we had paper logs and the total 8 hour break before we could drive another 10. Back then we could drive 16 hours in a 24 hour period. Mark does a good job of explaining it here.

Me, myself, and I just do the 10 hour break. Simple and hassle free. Even tho, I do realize a lot of Drivers and Companies rely on the Split Berth to ensure delivery deadlines and such things as Relay Points (KLLM does frequently). Myself, I have no need or use for the split berth in the particular delivery field I am now doing. Multi Stops (7-12 stops-two day period) in Daylight Hours only.
But, more power for those that use it on a daily basis!

Depends, what if I get to a shipper, i go off duty, by the time they unload me I have no hours and my company doesn't allow PC. You arent allowed to park there overnight, so now what, i go back and edit my log for the 8 or 9 hrs off duty to 8 hrs sleeper and boom, i have hours to ddive now because that stopped my 14 hr clock, I can now drive to a travel center and be legal

Well for all smart professional truck driver this thing works for you when you need to roll as soon as possible and once you start driving you can make it to Delivery, Pick up or HOME! I drove 3.5hrs today to pick up. 5th hrs and still not loaded. Once i get loaded i will wait for 8 hrs of sleeper or Off D and i will gain 7.5 hrs that will allow me to get in the yard!! Thanks for vid!!

Actually today is a reason why I had to look this up. I started too early and I am currently 1 mile from the shipper. They wont accept me until 1am.
Well it's currently 5pm when I stopped. My 14 will be exaughsted if I sit here. And not enough time for a 10.
But I have 8 hour between now (5pm) and 1am.
So after 8 hours I'll get what I drove back, giving me enough time to deliver this load and then get back to a stop to go to bed

I always did a 2/8 split when driving at night. It never failed. When 3am roled around I'd start the touch n goes. No matter how much sleep I got. So I'd pull over and take a 2hr nap and get going again. Then later all I needed was an 8hr break to recover my hrs.

    Hi,
I know how to use the split sleeper berth 2-8, but can it be done the other way around after running out of HOS?
Say that I already drove 11 hrs and usually for me to get another 11 hrs of dive time, I need to be off 10 hrs, but if I only get into sleeper berth for 8 hrs, will I get any driving hours back? And after driving, let's say 4 hrs, I get into the sleeper berth for 2 hrs. Does that work?
Btw, the 2 hrs does freeze your time as long as you don'tmove your truck within those 2 hrs. I do it all the time.
    Thank you

Hi All, Do you know what would happen if I have a violation in the middle of the split break? e.g. start a day after a full reset. Drive for 4 hours take a 1-hour break. drive another 1 hour. Take 2 hours Off duty. driver for the next 6 hours and get to 2 minutes violation (total drive time 11h 2m). Can I now take my 8 hours in the sleeper berth or do I need to take a full 10-hour break as I'm in violation?

The way that you explain it. It makes it sound like to me that you actually lose an hour's driving time for splitting your sleeper. Not sure what to think about that. I know with the ELD that I used to run, I could take that short break and it would show me in violation after 14 total hours, but , as long as I didn't drive more than eleven total hours and be on duty fourteen total hours before I went for my 8 hour sleeper break, it would erase that violation after I took the eight hours in the sleeper.

I run 650 a day. If you run between 550-650 a day...do your run. Take the 10. I have the used the benefit of an -8/2,2/8 split to change rotation on driving from day to night or night to day especially involving holiday closures and sit times. But just to use a split because a shipper is slow or load assignment comes out showing slow load times at the shipper? Preplanners and load planners need a little help not the driver. There is a potential hazard here for milking a driver to satisfy "rushed needs" by the planner and usually that occurs at about the last 2-3 days for your home-time. I certainly will not accommodate with an 8/2, 2/8 split when my schedule has been known for weeks at a time as a target date to get home. I want my 10 hours off duty. When I run, I run solid.

What’s up y’all Can’t we just all go back to paper log, that’s the safest way of transporting coast to coasting, if a pro driver needs a 30-60 minute nap it shouldt count against him. it’s destroying our roads with crashes and delays and I completely believe the eld castophry is at fault! 🤯

I think the real reason for eld is to control the newby Drivers for the big companies. When paperlogs were around, driving wasn't such a nuisance and chore! Had the freedom of stopping at a diner or chrome shop and enjoying the drive. Now we are told when to piss, take a dump, deal with traffic and work/drive odd hours! I don't see how this is more safe than paperlogs. They need to make it harder and more training available prior to being on road. Logs should be kept to insure enough behind the wheel hours have accumulated before they can go solo. But then again this doesn't let the big companies dictate what they get to pay new drivers. Safety isn't their goal, it's shipping and delivery for cheap as possible! Good thing however, rates have gone up.

True but then you got guys that abuse paper logs and drive like from WISCONSIN to TEXAS straight through without sleep or longer. That's how accidents happen. Some don't call it quits when they should. Wish it was only paper logs obviously but yeah

G Rad Canada is a 16 hour clock. 13 driving 3 on duty. No 30 minute break. All off duty’s must be minimum 1/2 and go against your 16 hour clock. Must go Sleeper minimum 8 to reset your 13 hours drive clock.

  • @JTDyer21
    @JTDyer21 5 лет назад +2

Just eliminate the logbook. There's no need for a logbook. Give the driver 4000 miles a week to run. If he stays within 4000 miles, he's automatically legal. That's it. Doesn't matter where he goes or what he's doing. Very simple.
