I heard a story that Gloria Swanson was so devoted to healthy eating, she would brown bag her meals to awards dinners. The bags were discreetly given to the wait staff and she was served the food she brought.
To be honest, that's genius. That's almost like how there are dietary considerations taken into account today at fancier dinners, but Gloria was ahead of her time (plus honestly, I feel like a lot of richer foods, like steak, literal meat and potatoes etc., were on par for the course for 'fancier' food at the time. I'd also probably bring something lighter along to eat as well.
That’s Orthorexia, but I can dig it.
What is brown bagging? Actually I looked it up, means using left overs and taking home prepared lunches. For anyone else wondering lol
@@FollowmedowntheNumberWhole what part?
That's why she was still beautiful to the very end of her life and probably never went under the knife!
Audrey Hepburn went on to be a UNICEF ambassador for the World Food Program because she was so affected by her childhood experiences around starvation... a phenomenal woman
UNICEF is involved in human trafficking
They were also REALLLLLYYYY active like doing house work, walking every where.
Coffee is an appetite suppressant and it's socially acceptable so you just drink that and get your chores and errands done.
@@AnnaLVajda it’s never been a appetite suppresser for that’s actually y I started drinking coffee it doesn’t even give me energy I literally drink it as a treat and soother lol I looove it
They might have also been prescribed speed back then eu
@@AnnaLVajda sometimes it makes me feel more hungry
@Dios I think she more meant 50s women generally
Sophia Loren never really dieted. She ate pasta almost every day and also drank wine. She also slept nine hours a night.
She's still alive as of Aug. 2021....
Good for her !!!
queen is still alive today :)
Gloria was so completely ahead of her time regarding intake. She healed her body with food and sunlight and maintained that diet her entire life. Listening to her discuss health back in the 70s is inspiring!
can i have a link?
Did she die from cancer?
Died from a heart ailment, aged 84. That's a pretty average lifespan for a woman.
How is that ahead of her time?
All that “healthy” eating, and ironically they were encouraged to smoke like chimneys and drink like fish.
THEY DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING BACK THEN!🙄
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😊😊😊😊
Don’t forget the Benzedrine that was handed out like candy
Plus all the drugs and pills they were inhaling
Right 😂 and took pills that were practically meth
I wonder why exactly 118lbs? Also 118lbs at 5 foot and 118lbs at 5'9 are two very different things.
How many kg is that...
@@kumarules118 53.5kg
Women weren't 5'9 back then lmao. Marilyn Monroe talks about being a "giant tall freak" compared to other girls and she was only 5'5."
@@samaraisnt Of course some were
@@samaraisnt Ingrid Bergman was 5'9
There's nothing weird in mixing cottage cheese and sour cream. Add chives and radishes and you'll have a very Polish breakfast.
The best breakfast in the world! But mine one is usually with onion! Plus a plate of skinless and sliced tomatoes on the top of that! 😋
@@pauljet Heck yeah
thats turkish/jewish
Seems horribly farty!!💩💩
@@pauljet Do people get upset when you fart?
As a young mother, I was extremely active too. I was a housewife with 2 little boys for 10 years, and then went to nursing school. I cleaned house every day, walked, rode bikes with my boys and before they were old enough to help with cutting grass, I'd do it a lot of times because I liked making my husband's life easier. He was a hard worker and had a lot of stress on the job. I laid his clothes out, brought his coffee to him before he got up, fixed his lunch, and his dinner was ready when he got home. I don't know why I'm telling y'all all of this, but it was good life. I'd like to try that perfume!
I think that’s awesome!
Give us dating advice Linda!
@@brooklyn3299 LOL. I met my first husband on a blind date and we married 2 years later. I was18, and in my first year of college and really hadn't dated much before I met him. As far as dating advice, just be your authentic self, expect to be respected and if you really like the guy, don't text and call all the time or watch him on social media! Guys don't like that as much as girls do! Play a little 'hard to get', because guys don't like being chased. Remember, you're worth it! Thank goodness we didn't have all of that back in the 60's or I'd have driven myself crazy!😂
My first husband and I were married for 30 years, when he suddenly passed of a heart attack. My sons and I were destroyed. I never wanted to get married again, but God had other plans. Four years later I met my second husband online! Don't laugh! We both said that God put us in each other's path. We got married and had 12 good years together. He became ill with cancer and I lost him 2 years ago. Whether it's suddenly or expected, both are devastating . I'd better hush or I'll end up in a pile of tears! Sorry for the novel!
@Barbie Blues Thank you Barbie. I did the best I could.
@@lindahandley5267 my condolences Linda!
Don't forget so many Glamour Queens SMOKED CIGARETTES! This cuts your appetite but wrecks future health. (But they didn't really know how much then.) I remember my Mother buying MELBA TOAST. So funny. It was like eating craters. Lol.
You are so right. The diets were enough to drive anyone crazy. Plus the cigarettes, alcohol, and coffee. It was a miracle these ladies could still smile for us.
@@jenniferspoto3688 ciggies booze and black coffee are awesome though
My 2 dead friends found out recently. Yes. They were skinny.
I like Mae West’s diet
Also Melba toast wasn't a diet food, it was like crackers, something you ate with other food
I think Sofia Lauren is the healthiest and most wonderful of them all. Her cooks books are awesome.
Italians are too awesome to diet
Sofia is still striking at almost 90!
I have one of her cookbooks and I love it. I've known what putanesca is for years but I love how her recipe says PUTANESCA-whore's pasta, and the recipe follows. It cracks me up.
The basis for the Mediterranean diet
Her figure was gorgeous
When Marilyn was struggling to make money, she lived on raw mince (ground beef). She also ate a lot of cottage cheese. We shouldn’t forget that back then, it could well have been a luxury to have cooking facilities in a low rent house/room/apartment.
Thing I want to know is that what did she look like at the time of her death you would think the coroner said that she looked we'll attractive when they did the autopsy on her
Cottage cheese and sour cream are delicious together, with a pinch of salt. This is a traditional Romanian meal and it's eaten with warm polenta.
And Polish too
Mamaligaa
Yeeeees, it's done in Croatia and Serbia too! (Probably in the rest of the Balkans as well)
My grandma said it was basically their staple food during WWII....but it's still delicious.
With chives or raddish
@@ekunsa Ickeee!
Why do we Eastern Europeans eat such gross stuff??????
Extreme calorie reduction can really mess with your health, when I was anorexic I ate 1200 cal. a day and I almost died. Going below 1500 a day esp. when you work out isn't necessary, just accept that it takes a while.
i usually workout and eat 1200 do i need to eat more wuoariosod??
Glad your doing better.
I eat about 900 calories a day on the optavia diet. I feel really good and the weight is falling right off
I genuinely don’t get hungry enough to even approach 1,500 a day. I’m pretty sure I’d gain weight on that much
@Esra Çetintaş 14
Marilyn had the weirdest taste buds
Milk and eggs together is good but mine is cooked
Sophia Loren's diet is the tastiest and healthiest. Marilyn's was basically starving. Audrey's would get super boring after a while, same for many of the other's diets. I have so much respect for Katherine Hepburn, what a trail blazer she was. Gloria Swanson as well, she seemed like a real cool lady.
Marilyns diet was actually really good and hearty. This is just a snippet of her diet
I was thinking the complete opposite? Marylin is still eating her liquor and ice cream, she wasn't starving at all lol
marilyn wasn’t starving lmao
Liver milk and raw eggs is very nutritious
Can I just say I LOVE the editing of your videos! Those celebrity photo cutouts which match what you're talking about, alongside the little clips of food or fashion or whatever it is... It's like a vintage scrap book in video form! It must take you ages and it's so beautiful to watch and just get lost in all the old glamour! (The fascinating facts and relaxing voiceover are wonderful too, but I was particularly struck by the visual style).
I like Marilyn Monroe 's diet and Grace Kelly with the light snacking in between.
They all seemed to excise quite a lot, that kept them fit too!!
Maria Callas (famous opera singer and Aristotle Onassis's girlfriend before Jacquie Kennedy) lost 100 pounds and kept it off by eating nothing but steak and salad for every meal.
I heard Jackie Gleason and some of the male stars from the 60's and 70's liked to diet that way. It seems like a glamorous, celebrity way to diet, but I have a hard time giving up a baked potato with it.
@@serenatwilite4005, same here. Carbs make life worth living.
What you fail to mention is that almost every one of these women were massive consumers of alcohol and pills. I imagine that diet played a very insignificant part of their daily lives.
True specially diet pills were the norm
Such a fun video! Have you thought about doing a video on 'Madame Sylvia'? She was an exercise guru in the 1930's to the Hollywood stars. I think she even wrote a tell all book about her clients.
I've heard of her on the " you must remember this" popcast.
Marilyn's diet really wasn't that bizarre, tbh.
and Audrey had a huuuuge stash of exotic gourmet chocolate. Her son mentioned it, it was pretty prolific. There's a netflix documentary on there, still up, and they mention it, too.
Joan's secretary, Betty Barker, described Joan's diet as what we would consider low carb now. She ate very plain vegetables and avoided desserts
I hate diets. I hate exercise...
Diet hater over here, too.
The biggest bummer about both is they really kill your freedom and spontaneity.
“Strange recipes like mixing cottage cheese and sour cream…”
Lol, this is a common and well-loved healthy breakfast in Russia. You can mix it with dried fruit, jam or plain sugar or eat it sour. In fact, it is so common that we have rows of various packaged flavored options of this breakfast in any supermarket.
We do that in Canada too.
I may have to try that now!
In the UK you can only buy cottage cheese similar to Russian in the Polish sector of Tesco, otherwise typical British cottage cheese is rubbish!
OMG Gaylord is a real name? I honestly thought Meet The Parents made it up.
Yuuuup it is
My dads name was Gaylord
Lol
It’s a very old name
Now I'm starting to wonder if Focker is a real name, too
I think Audrey's malnourishment stayed with her, when that happens you have to consume a lot of nutrients to make up for it.
That happened to my Grandparents who grew up in the depression. We had some "depression food" even though they had money because of the effect it had on them. I remember chip beef on dry toast, onion with butter sandwiches and pickle with peanut butter sandwiches frequently.
@@jaybyrd3240 I've seen a few "depression era" cooking channels too here
I personally only have black coffee and cigarettes for breakfast. Gods honest truth. How people can eat food first thing in the morning is beyond my comprehension.
Who has cigarettes for breakfast
@@nornubarikii9142 I DO
It depends on the person, some need breakfast some do better without breakfast.
same. eating a "balanced" breakfast makes me feel sick and sluggish for the rest of the day.
A lot of people don't eat breakfast!!! I try and have a banana 🤗
The Egg milk was quite common in the30's. My grandmother drank it and made it for me later on in life :)
Anyone ever try Sharon Tate's Boiled Spinach with Oil, Vinegar, Lemon Juice, and pieces of "well done" bacon? She mentioned it in an article once. 😊
Μy mum's favourite meal. Mine's too except the bacon😷
What? Dancing 8 hours a day and STILL on a strict diet?
You did a great research, Laura. Excellent video!💖
I liked the way Mae West thinks. I ate Elizabeth Taylor's fried chicken meal tonight for dinner😄
Thank you so much Laura for make this video.
A lot went to Pasadena's Dr. Beiler. He recommended a simple blender pureed soup...Beiler's Soup...eat only that for a minimum of three days...cooked celery,, onions, green beans, broccoli and carrots....blend after steaming all...eat hot, cold or room temp. .
Great research, Laura, and beautiful visuals as per usual. I personally admire your dedication to you craft and your brand, and I am glad you are getting the recognition in partnerships that you deserve.
Dr. Dray brought me here and I’m so glad she did!! I’m obsessed with your videos, they are so fascinating and your editing makes it even better. New subscriber! ☺️

Very interesting!! Thank you for sharing this!!
Sophia Loren's diet is amazing! Garlic spaghetti would be delicious and it will give you energy for the next day! 🍝
I think she said some of her beauty secrets were to eat fresh pasta daily and olive oil baths : )
I love videos like this, time to travel back in time
Thank you! That was fascinating! You look gorgeous! I love your dress!
I'm of a Ukrainian descent and I used to eat cottage cheese with sour cream almost my whole life
Great job! Loved every second of this video! 💋🌹
I love your channel so much. I also live in Canada, I'm almost sure you mentioned you lived in Canada in another video. I also loved and appreciated your house tour at your parents home, it was so beautiful.
New subscriber! You are so well researched, and I just love your videos❤️
Thank you for sharing😊
They must have been very stressed. I think Rita,Greta, and Audrey had the best figures.I applaud Greta Garbo being a vegetarian. Audrey Hepburn had many illnesses in her childhood. She could eat anything and never have to diet. One of her sons said that she ate countless candy bars each day. Enjoyed your video. Thanks.😊
I don't think Greta Garbo was a vegetarian for life. She maintained a high veggie diet but after a while started incorporating a little meat into it.
@@catterinax I never said she was a vegetarian all her life. She started following The Hauser diet later on before retiring from films. I wouldn't recommend his diet. Black strap molasses doesn't sound so good.
Yeah to the candy bars!
Superb. Thanks for sharing! 💐
Ava Gardner was so gorgeous. She was my grandfather's pin-up girl during WWII.

500 calories per day is the recommended intake for a BABY 😱
An added 300 calories in the first trimester then up to 500 ADDED calories for the second and third.

There are quite afew effective diets to lose weight. But eating balanced meals and watching calories is really the only way to go for longterm maintenance, its the healthiest.
Back then the food was good, natural and healthy, people were more activ and they walked everyday.
They smoked and drank a lot though
@user-zp2xh5sw1f They seemed to think it was like exercise for your lungs and had the benefit of calming you down and refreshing you, too.
Loved the video so much
118 pounds/53 kg is a good healthy weight if you are 1.50-1.60 m tall👍🏻🥰
Exactly. Considering I'm 1.85 m tall and 165 pounds/75 kgs, I'd say 118 is fime for someone who is 1.60 m
If you’re 150 cm and 53 kg, you’re quite overweight.
Rather 1m60-1m70
150cm is overweight..tf.
i wish you would’ve added eartha kitt, lana turner, and dorothy dandridge
Indulged in BAKING chocolate? Is that really indulging though?
Way less sugar...
Baking chocolate is otherwise known as 70 or higher percent of dark chocolate and way less sugar.
ok but this bacon and peanut butter sandwich HELLOOOO😍
They had cocaine in their soft drinks.
I'm gonna have to try some of these diets
I remember the various Stillman's diets. One was one boiled egg and one tomato three times a day.
Amazing content 👌
Excellent video! Thank you! 😊
Audrey Hepburn loved pasta so much she had it included in her film contracts. Pasta for lunch every day!
Always. Nice N very cool 😎. To. See. Your. Look into The things you present. Thank you 😊 Elizabeth
Great video!!
Thanks Doll Face!
Gloria Swanson was ahead of her time. Lovely woman.
I'd hardly call baking chocolate an "indulgence!" Isn't it unsweetened?

@@slefthandbull Exactly!
I remember hearing about models doing that back in the 60's, trying to look like Twiggy. Another thing I heard was that some of them would have their back molars removed to give them hollowed out cheekbones. Both of those have to be as ridiculous as it gets.
My mom had the same breakfast and gave us the same till age 10 she put few drops of vanila drops
Surely the eggs would scramble in hot milk. Could add vanilla essence for sweetness
Maybe she temper the eggs and basicly got an egg custart😆
Vanilla, sugar, and nutmeg would make eggnog
In australia , my italian mum would call that an egg flip ,just made with fresh cold milk and sugar blended sometimes if we werent feeling too good , it tasted good but a bjt weird for me but we rarely ever got sick .
basically a milk shake without sugar
I find Gloria Swanson quite scarry in some photos! Joan Crawford perhaps was so volatile due to her hunger! Toward the end of her career she forced herself to fit into the tiny waisted clothes that starlets we're seen wearing.
Snacking on onions and garlic? I hope Betty had a lot of breath mints on hand.

It's a part of health but food is 80% of it

I gained weight eating only 500 cals a day. And that was of salads and eggs.

Low calorie diets slows down your metabolism, making weight loss much more challenging because your body is literally in starvation mode and it’s resisting by trying to preserve as many calorie in order to survive. Abbie Sharp, a registered dietitian, talks alot about this her this in RUclips channel.
This is a blatant lie.

definitely dont go nuts once a week you can very easily eat all the calories you burned off back on in a single meal , try eating a meal that you want on the week ends but just don't go over board with it. Personally I eat in a surplus on Saturday and sundays but I up my steps on Saturday to to help offset my higher calories and it has worked great for me. I went from 171 lbs at 5'9 (male) to 138 last I checked. Granted its easier for guys to lose weight.
Mae west was absolutely beautiful! Inside and out!
My Grandmother used to say that Mae West was, "Some babe!"!
It seemed like the women in the 20s and 30s had to be extremely thin while the women in the 50s and beyond were more about eating healthy and doing exercise
Some say diets, some say eating disorders…
Edtwt is gonna eat this up
I like the one where you eat whatever you want one day out if the week.
That's the Rotation Diet. Pigging out once a week actually gives your metabolism a boost. It also gives you something to look forward to!

My grand father followed a diet in the sixties called” martinis and whipped cream.”
Then he had his first heart attack. My parents thought it was funny in a morbid sort of way, and kept the diet book by that name for 20 years after he died.
@@victoriawhite3662 I have a copy of that book, got it in a used bookstore in the 70's. From what I remember it had a lot of the diet secrets of celebrities of the time. It was one of my favorite diet books. It made dieting seem a little more exotic and glamorous, instead of deprivation.
The 70s even spat out the Eggs & White wine diet... Sick way to kill your heart
