DIY Beauty Treatments Inspired by Old Hollywood Legends

  • Since we are now spending more time at home, I thought it would be fun to do a video about DIY at-home beauty treatments inspired by old Hollywood.
    Mae West:
    Mae West was ahead of her time because she swore by coconut oil and applied it to her face and neck to keep her skin soft and youthful. A reporter who visited her at home in 1974 noted that she "talked at length about the benefits of putting coconut oil on her face"-and found the then-83-year-old dressed in a pink trouser suit and platform heels, lugging an exercise bicycle out of her dining room. Mae West also recommended babu oil, stating that "Then you'll keep your soft skin. That's how I kept mine. I always use baby oil. But it has to be warm, and you have to have a man put it on you."
    Elizabeth Taylor:
    Elizabeth Taylor would take a hot bath after she applied a full face of makeup before an event to set her makeup and give her skin a dewy glow. In her 1987 book Elizabeth Takes Off, she also outlines a series of home exercises that she liked to do twice a day, including the "Face Saver" which she wrote "helps promote better tone through your neck and jaw by reducing tension in your upper spine, neck, and head. I always look more relaxed and rested after I do ten." Stand straight and tall, clasp your hands behind your neck at the base. Exerting smooth, steady pressure, try to push your head and neck back while resisting with your clasped hands.Push/resist for a count of five. Repeat ten times.
    Sophia Loren:
    The Italian bombshell's 1984 book Women And Beauty Sofia Loren suggests that "Beauty gets you noticed, intelligence and wit demand recognition, but charm will make you memorable." Sofia recommends having a DIY spa night at least once a week. "If you have a family, a good way to schedule your spa is to pick a night that features their favorite television show. Make it clear to everyone that on that evening, during that show, you are not to be disturbed. Do not feel guilty about doing this." Sofia suggests that you start with some stretching exercises, putting on soothing music, slathering on a moisturizing face mask, and then settling into a warm tub spiked with salts, oil, or powdered milk. While marinating, pumice heels and elbows, brush your whole body with a body brush, push back your cuticles with a washcloth, and shave. Rinse with cold water, apply body lotion or oil while the skin is still damp, then give yourself a pedicure. "By the end of your spa," she writes, "you will be ready for a glass of wine or a cup of tea. And you'll be irresistible."
    Rita Hayworth:
    Rita was known for her beautiful red hair and her famous hair flip in the film Gilda. Rita kept her hair soft by saturating it with olive oil after washing it and wrapped it in a towel for 15 minutes before rinsing it with hot water and lemon juice.
    Joan Crawford:
    Joan Crawford was notoriously known for plunging her face in ice water 25 times every morning. She wrote in her 1971 book My Way of Life, after making a not-so-subtle dig at Hollywood-beloved facialists such as Erno Laszlo, "I can accomplish most of what these experts do right in my own bathroom or kitchen. So can any woman. The best beauty preparations cost only a few cents, and I frequently find them in my refrigerator. If they sound too simple to be effective, just try them." Joan claims that she used to wash her daughter's hair with raw eggs instead of shampoo. Apparently, it was a trick she used from Katherine Hepburn. "Some people use eggs beaten up with a jigger of rum; others mix an egg with red wine." Joan's favorite face masl was a blend of gelatin beaten with witch hazel, baking soda, and a whole egg. For her hair, she used mayonnaise, olive oil, eggs, and lemon juice for 15 minutes. "Rinse it off with cool water. Cool‑or, you'll have scrambled eggs on your head."

    I have used whipped egg on my hair and face for years as a protein moisturizing treatment. A cosmetologist reccomended it. Argon oil is fantastic for hair, face and body. For an extra treat add a few drops of lavender and/ or rose essential oil to the argon oil for the soothing and antibacterial properties. I also take distilled water and a few drops of lavender and/or rose essential oil and put it in a spray bottle. It works wonders to refresh my makeup and curls in the NC heat. I also use it to lightly mist my bed linens, throw pillows and curtains.

    Marilyn monroe never shaved her face though and she actually refused to because she said the peach fuzz gave her a glow underneath the lights

    Oh interesting, I heard somewhere that Marilyn specifically didn’t shave her face because the peach fuzz combined with the Vaseline she used looked good under studio lights. Where do you find all these facts?

      I read that she did

    • @Hevynly1
      @Hevynly1 4 года назад +17

      I read the same. Something about a medication she took that produced more peach fuzz than normal, and she liked it as you mentioned. Perhaps prior to that in the earlier 50s she shaved it?

    • @honeymarigold8094
      @honeymarigold8094 4 года назад +29

      I have also read that Marilyn embraced her, according to some "heaviest peach fuzz they had seen" which grew and became very visible to the naked eye due to a hormone cream she apparently used. She refused to shave it off and used it in a positive manner combined with Vaseline to create that beautiful glow she has in many of her photographs. It is also quite visible in some close-up photographs made in public by the paparazzi when she was out and about or at events. It was said to be Elizabeth Tayler whom shaved her face. But who knows. I have read both about Marilyn. However the photographs suggest that she did not. The information on who used or did what in their beauty routine can be quite confusing at times.

    I find it so funny how much information we can find about our favourite celebrities' beauty routines. Yet, I wonder how it is that so many times I find the opposite having been proclaimed. For example, Marilyn Monroe- she Always wore a bra blah blah. MM swore off bras and blah blah. I've read exact opposite peach fuzz comments as her makeup preparation. One claimed she loved her peach fuzz because she thought it worked like how we use a photo filter, softening her skin and wrinkles on the edges.
    Absolutely love videos like this. Like secretly getting to peak in and hear tips. Such fun.

Mom's hairdresser told her to use warm olive oil And It did the trick! No my cradle cap and her hair grew back. I have a friend who is very particular with groomng. Her dermatologist told her to shave her face rather than any other way. Said it was the most gentle on her skin.

    I like to do a bit of avocado oil or apricot oil on my hair before washing, at least for 30 minutes, concentrating on the ends. I’ve tried coconut and it’s far too heavy for my fine hair. I remember doing mayo masks on my hair in the 80’s. Rinsing hair with beer was popular too. I do several treatments every week. I don’t have a television. You’d be surprised how much time is wasted on tv/movies. I’d rather spend that time on myself.

    I like my peach fuzz :-) it actually kind of blurs imperfections in my opinion. There are a lot of famous women including Jane Seymour who have visible peach fuzz and in my opinion doesn't hurt their looks at all :-)
    I moisturize my face daily with coconut oil (liquid not the solid) in fact it's the only moisturizer I use on my face and it does a great job plus I credit it for ending my breakouts.

    Were you able to get the olive oil and mayo off of your hair turban? I would be super worried about that, like it wouldn't come out in the washing machine.

    They say you’re supposed to put your face in icewater like dunk it. And hold it for as long as you can. It’s to help the collagen. People swear by it. I’ve never tried it myself

    I am in my 40s and my skin is still very oily so I only use Noxzema to wash my face so they must have had dry skin to use some of these.

    Personally when I use a face razor like that I only do the areas that look sloppy and grow in dark like my upper lip, side burn area and to shape around the eyebrow. I dont understand why people shave off ALL their peach fuzz. Your pores need hair to wick away sweat or it will sit on your skin and I feel like it's a lot of up keep. I dont know about you but my hair grows back in a day or two. That's just how I feel though 🤷‍♀️
