This video is 71 years old, and it’s as true today as it was back then. It’s not a crazy plan that requires eliminating food groups, it’s not a starvation diet, and it doesn’t require fasting. It also highlights how people underestimate the amount of calories that they eat.

@@k__d28 Fast food can definitely have a lot of calories and it depends on what you get, but 2000 calories in 1 meal doesn't seem right. I checked McDonalds and the big mac meal or 10 piece nugget meal both come out below 1000. I guess if you get a large everything and a shake to go with it, it would be pretty close. I don't know how common that is though.
@@snowangelgirl1 Yes you have to diet for the rest of your life or the weight creeps back on. Exercise helps too but you still need to diet. Everyone is different though. I've know people that keep weight off by exercising alone but that only works for some people. We have different calories needs.

You become more efficient at storing fat, your resting metabolic rate slows, and you burn fewer calories every day. Meanwhile, your body keeps demanding food and nutrition, so even if you have lots of body fat that can be used as "fuel," your body is going to keep sending hunger signals.

Foods are way more processed than they used to be in the 1950s. Plus, we now have to deal with many hidden sugars in much of our food staples. So, it can be difficult to navigate what is right to eat, especially when the current Standard American Diet rules are dated and often doing more damage than good. And that doesn't even take into account things like education and class and how there's so many "food deserts" in lower income neighborhoods, making eating healthy more of challenge for many people. It's just not so simple for many people.

Lactose intolerance is treated as a lifestyle or digestive issue rather than a permanent problem and it's consumption recommended for all age groups, in varying quantity of course.
Angel yeah pasteurised dairy is inflammatory ie dead milk ! keep it Raw Dairy! No animal in the wild "counts calories" but every single of these have their perfect weight. If the food is abundand the animals don't get fat but reproduce rapidly. The body of each animals have perfect body-weight regulation. The only occasion when animals get fat is when these are to be prepared for the winter in order to survive that period of the year. It has been shown that sugar (fructose/sucrose) is what is signaling to the body to get "prepared for the winter" as abundand fruit comes in the late sommer and in the fall. Obesity in humans (and human-fed animals) is not caused by "excess calories" but by dysregulated metabolism which is caused by 1) the type of food we eat, especially sugar, other carbohydrates and "vegetable" oils (seed oils), 2) too frequent meals, 3) sleep deprivation, 4) stress. "Calories" are just a complete bullsht and "counting calories" doesn't help long term.
Summary of the diet: - Eat 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) - Focus on including a fat source, protein source, and a fruit or vegetable at every meal - Exercise regularly

Even Fung has some mistakes in how he interprets data. But with Fung, I think he extrapolates far less and he has some results with diabetes patients.

So much milk and cheese, then you notice the video was made by the National Dairy Council. Interesting to note, though, that a high-fat, high-protein diet with lots of vegetables was recommended back then and the diet included very little processed sugar. It seems we all went through a long period where fat was viewed as the baddie, not sugar, and now that idea has been totally reversed. Also interesting to see that overweight people in the '50s were completely different and much thinner than overweight people nowadays.
See, during this time, and I'll give just a summary, no need to go into all of the detail, but basically, the president had a heart attack, and the issue of heart disease was thrust into public view. At the time, two scientists were at war with each other, an american, who claimed fat was the problem for declining health, while a British one declared that sugar was to blame. Well, the American won, and soon after, fat was to blame, and sugar was exonerated. Food companies started removing fat from packaged foods, which in turn, had them adding more sugar to compensate. Then, a combination of factors, mainly the influence of the food and beverage companies, declared sugar to be safe, and boy, did society go for it. We were ingesting more and more, taking out fat that wasn't all that unhealthy to begin with, and so began the downfall. Society pushed the idea of a low fat diet and how all calories were the same, when they weren't. Personal responsibility only went so far with companies pushing these ideas. This is one of the biggest factors of why there is so much sugar in our diets now. Yes, true, and it's a relatively recent reversal. I am only 30 and even I, as a child, was taught that sugar was bad for you teeth, but nothing else. It was only when I reached my later teens that people were really pointing to sugar as part of the obesity epidemic

I've tried as little as only one meal per two days and up to as many as six meals per day. I've found 3-5, most often 4, meals per day works best for me. I lift and do cardio training, so getting doses of nutrients throughout the day is best for my lifestyle. Get enough amino acids from high-quality protein sources (eggs, meats, dairy, etc.) at each meal, get enough fatty acids for hormonal health (I prefer more in the morning and/or evening, and I prefer seafood or legume/nut sources), then fill in the energy needs with carbohydrates (peri-workout is best), fiber is important for gut health and feeling full, get plenty of fiber + micro-nutrients from veggies/fruit (and daily multivitamin capsules if needed). I like a nice bowl of Greek yogurt as my final meal, usually with berries and a little vanilla whey powder. 💪 I used to track macronutrients daily until I now know how to "estimate by eye" most meals and I have a knowledge of the macro profiles of most foods I encounter.
Until you know that calorie in label can be 20 % higher acording to FDA, so the people that tried counting calories and still fat get disappointed from the result and then getting lazy to do weight lose project.

It is widely known that being overweight shortens life span through extra stress on the body (especially the heart), high blood pressure, etc. While some heavier people can be of OK health, they are not the norm and certainly not the majority. Some people die in car crashes while wearing their seat belts, but that doesn't mean that as a rule seat belts don't save lives.
I agree , it’s simple wholesome foods in a satisfying amounts rather than processed foods full of chemicals that provide little to no satiety. Include some simple activity and patience for the weight to come off . But today’s society is so bent on the quick fix and the need to kill themselves for hours in the gym with stress levels so high that cortisol levels make it harder to lose the weight . It’s an awful cycle .

I was so much happier when I lost weight. I ate much healthier.... no processed foods . ... being more aware of portion size and exercised a lot more. I lost 70 lbs and have kept it off for 20 years. I’m really happy I did it when I was younger when it was easier to do.
25 years ago I dieted and treadmilled from 160 down to 135 in about 2 1/2 months. I felt great! Just made treadmilling a habit 4X a week for 1 hour nonstop.
Yes! I agree you should train yourself to eat healthy at a younger age so you can carry those habits with you when you get older. I also check my weight every so often and will go on mini diets so I only have 5 lbs to lose vs 20+.

This is very close to the eating plan I changed to 21 years ago (more protein & fat, plenty of fruit, veg & dairy) after 10 years of that ridiculous low-fat eating of the 1980s & early 1990s. It took off my excess weight slowly, because I really hate being hungry, so aimed for about 1700 - 1800 calories a day. Haven’t changed the plan and the weight has all stayed off.
Low fat isn't ridiculous. It is when you're eating processed foods labeled "low fat" but 80 plus years of research show a diet naturally lower in fat is healthier for a human body

Both of my grandmas, born in the 20s, told me that back in their day, it was common sense among women that if you gained a few pounds, you cut out all white foods and desserts until you lost them again. Amazing how what was common sense back then has disappeared and then been 'discovered' again by science.
No one is happy overweight that I know of. I was obese for a long time before I finally realized that no matter how much I worked out, it was the food and eating habits that were the problem. It took 1.5 years to lose 75 lbs by reducing my calorie intake. The world needs to be more honest about obesity and the health/mental issues that come with it.
What was considered overweight would be normal weight these days. It’s amazing to see how the shift in the food pyramid messed up so many people. The “diet” featured here is healthy, nutritious, low calorie, and satisfying. Great video!!!

These fad diets are a bunch of crock. Atkins, Keto, etc may work in the beginning but when it comes down to it you need to eat whole foods, particularly high in protein to keep you satiated for longer periods of time so you don’t snack in between.
It's multi-factorial. I think it's plain to see there's a far greater abundance of high calorie palatable foods these days. And now it can be delivered to your door from ANYWHERE. Plus, physical education is not prioritized. Take all that nonsense we learn about fake social justice out of schools and replace it with physical and nutrition education from K-12. We'd be a much healthier, friendlier, and happy society. Of course, one of the biggest reasons is the amount of power that junk food corporations and their lobbyists have consolidated over the decades. They dictate food advertising and availability. Their involvement in American food policy should be redirected to starving nations. Get them out of our schools and somewhere they can actually help people (those with no food at all).

I gained 30 pounds my freshman year of college, way back in the 90's. I asked my doctor when I was home on break if he had any suggestions. He gave me a pamphlet on the Diabetic exchange diet. It worked! I used it all through my 20's whenever I needed to drop a few pounds. The plan he gave me was: *7 servings of starch a day( ex. One slice of bread, half a bagel, half a hamburger bun) *5 servings of protein ( one ounce is a serving) *2 servings of dairy ( 1 cup milk) *3 servings of fruit *3 servings of fat ( one pat of butter, one TBS salad dressing or mayo) *3-5 servings of vegetables *Walk for 30 minutes a day You can find it online, with different calorie options and details about what makes a serving.
Any "diet" will work in you limit the intake and maximize the activity. People will deprive themselves of so much and make themselves miserable because they are lazy. Walk that 30 minutes and your life will change.
I love this film. It's an encouraging and common sense look at a common problem. No fat shaming, just "here's what you need to do..." and they're spot on about the pointing to comfort eating, boredom etc.

Not entirely true. I've been a computer chair potato from much of 2000 - now, but from early 2011 - now in Sept. 2022, I've mostly maintained a weight range of 160 - 175 lbs (maybe up around 180 near Christmas) at 5 ft 11. I just don't care to overeat, and I mostly stay away from fast food, though I wasn't always staying away from it from 2011 - now.
This is really calming.. it makes me feel like my diet will succeed if I just follow these steps! Remind me that progress takes time and that everything will be okay if I just keep going
@@LilPoopsie yes but no 1500 calories of mcdonalds (roughly 1 big mac, 1 large fry, and 1 mcflurry) are basically empty in nutrients, super processed, addictive, and made to basically slide through you, you will be done in like 15 minutes and hungry again in, at most, 3 hours whereas 1500 calories of real food can be an entire 3 meals and a snack, an entire days worth of food without skipping any meal, and most importantly you can fit in all the nutrients (especially fiber and protein, which keep you fuller longer)

Which is why I was laughing at how transparent the conflict of interests is, they don't even try to hide it like they definitely would today. It's representative of a more innocent time when the public didn't analyse their advertising quite as much, which is why advertisers worked in a much less subtle way. Mabey just drink one glass of milk a day. Milk has to many carbs and hard cheddar cheese has less carbs than milk. Mabey children need one glass a day but dont think adults do! Unless you are shinny and your metabolism is high. In high school I started gaining weight a lot and a teacher came to our house to talk to my parents how concerned they were and my parents said we will handle it ourselves. Yep ceral for breakfast and fancy dessert every night! I kept getting fatter! And when I'd turn down dessert cause I told them I hated being fat. My parents would say or just a little siver. Well that little siver was enough to make me want more! I'm paying today now!
Gosh, the wisdom of back then should be resurrected not discarded! (with a few tweaks for the vegan preference). My version for today having struggled to eat sensibly for 40 years is cut out all processed foods and use a side plate instead of a dinner plate. Plus a bowl of fresh veg soup every day. No time for weighing/recording - that can become excessive and dangerous the other way.
People actually took a certain amount of pride in their appearance and weight back then. My Grandparents, both depression born, were never overweight and were always in neat attire. Fast forward to bulging black leggings and sagging pants at Walmart.
It's true, even to the early 1960s. My Dad once went to Pittsburgh while not dressed up as a 14 year old (I guess he took a bus to the library, and I think he said he was just in a T shirt and blue jeans) and he got a lecture over it.
Real, whole foods are much easier to fit into a 14-1600 calorie day! Down 60 lbs myself this way and have 60 to go. The trick is to not go back to your old habits once you’re closer to your goals. And you have to address the mental and emotional health aspects. Not many get to be 100+ pounds overweight without there being an underlying cause. Like the video says, some will be glandular, but many more are eating for anxiety, boredom, loneliness... the weight is a symptom in many cases of underlying emotional health issues.
I know your comment is old - but as someone who has gotten up to almost 300lbs, I can 100% confirm in many cases the weight is caused by an underlying emotional health issue (mental issue) in my case - anxiety, depression, and boredom. Going to be following what the video explains alongside a new workout plan and hopefully, it'll help me get my life back on track. :)
My Grandparents generation. They ate 3 squares a day, no snacking in between. Real food in moderation, never ever anything pre-packaged or processed. My grandmother took a 30 minute walk most days. She wasn't on any medications ever...even in her later years. Died in her sleep in her mid 90s. My grandfather lived til his mid 80s, never on meds and such like that either. He died from a lung condition most likely caused by his occupation. Neither ever had any cancer or health conditions in their lives.
Ideally no processed foods. For those low income folks who have no money to pick & choose food but get free charity boxes, we get a lot of processed foods, starches & thankful for whatever is given- but rarely fresh fruits or veggies or lean meats. The low income folks also have less access to medical/ dental care so their life expectancy usually isnt as long as those fortunate to have a little more money to live on. And without molars or teeth, impossible to eat nuts, raw apples, corn, celery, meat.
This is a typical no diet diet. This is the most sound advice and lifestyle. Eat three meals a day, sensible snack, move your body and just live. Diets are a billion dollar industry for a reason: they don't work
Actually drinking milk helps weight loss due to calcium intake. People with higher calcium intake weigh less. Fact. Now milk can be full of hormones etc. Factory farmed animals milk is gross.

It makes much more sense why I gain more weight when I'm with my dad. We get fast food almost everyday even though we have food at home, though most of it is old/expired stuffs and/or cereal, ramen, and instant mac and cheese. And when I'm with my mom we eat out less, and we only get slushies or milkshakes from Sonic as we head home on Fridays. Plus she makes food from home and buys food and ingredients for the week from Walmart and Aldi, and makes us eat all of our vegetables and encourages us to have healthy snacks. When it comes to lunches we can only have chips once a week (though over the weekend we tend to pig out on the snacks a little more). And me and my sis don't eat breakfast a lot bc at 6:30am we are not really hungry.
@@Neophema Absolutely. Remember the Hawaiian singer, Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole. He died in 1997 at the age of 38, of respiratory failure. At one point, he was about 750 pounds. Obesity being "just fine" seems about as dangerous as smoking.
Alternate title: Why Cooking Real Food Matters. Sugar and fat are hidden in pre-made convenience foods to give them flavour. Fresh food cooked yourself has real flavour and you don’t need as much (or any!) sugar or fat. tl;dr - eat a damn salad and some plain meat.
Put lettuce in a plate cook some eggs in a microwave or frozen vegetables in a microwave and throw in some nuts and berries as pack an apple and almonds for snacks. It takes 5 minutes cut this time from your sleep time and do this the night before or early morning

I’m an MSU student. I’m currently watching this video instead of studying for finals. When I saw ‘Michigan State College’ and the student Union I literally screamed. The universe is really trying to make me sort out my priorities.
An honest, interesting and informative 'documentary'. I'm in the UK and have an avid interest in WWII, the 1940s/1950s in general. My main manner of eating is by following the ration book style of eating. Things that were bad for you were in very short supply (ie fats, sugar, sweets etc) and the things that were good for you were generally plentiful (vegetables, salad items, some fruits and berries). Very few items were 'processed' so generally the country had a very healthy 'diet'. Plenty of 'ration book recipes' and information online.......... Give it a go !
I’m a sports nutritionist- this is still good advice. Meat, vegetables, and dairy are nutrient rich foods. You get full faster. You eat foods that your body doesn’t store. Tracking your intake is absolutely necessary. But not underfeeding.
Right as they were getting cars, automatic washers & dryers, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, etc vs walking & carrying your shopping (different places daily, & more frequently), hanging & beating rugs, scrubbing & wringing wash by hand & hanging it on the line, dusting, mopping, washing dishes, etc etc. It sounds silly but it was a lot of work. I think that might be why women in the '50s were a bit more slender on the whole than men... Though men had weekend chores like the lawn, raking leaves, fixing things, etc. It WAS an active life, compared to ours!

@@albertmarble The "woe is me" attitudes are unhelpful, but it is true that only 1.2% of women attended college in the 1950s. Of that, many went for their "M-R-S" degree and simply married a man they met there. Female careers generally did not pay well and were limited - secretary, teacher, phone operator, nurse.
Still works to this day. When I need to lose weight, I simply restrict my caloric intake to 1700Kcals a day and I lose about 1-2 lbs a week. Dosen't matter what I eat so long as I keep to the caloric restriction.
I think the best part of this was the beginning when they said they wanted the volunteers to feel "happy and healthy" like, yes, this is the goal of being a normal weight. Not to go crazy and starve yourself or become unhealthy physically or mentally, but enjoy your food and feel nourished.
I love how it is professional, to the point but not talking down to anyone. They give information that is useful and can be taken to a medical professional to discuss and plan.
If you eat real food and watch how much you're eating, you'll be healthy and more importantly, happy. I like to make my desserts from scratch because I can control exactly what's in it. Just fruit can be a really good dessert. The other piece of the puzzle is exercise. It doesn't have to be something awful. Find something you enjoy doing and consider mixing it up and doing different exercises. Think of the exercises as hobbies instead of chores you have to do. Basketball, biking, walking, tennis, soccer, hiking...there are so many things you can try. The best workout for you is the one you'll actually do, so pick something you like. 😃
Large portions became the norm at fast food places and restaurants by the 1980s . A typical soda available to order was in an 8 oz cup or glass . Burgers were not humongous , neither were the portion of fries

@@MinttMeringue There is no essential need for carbs. Carbs became a major food source after agriculture took off. Its a contributing factor to why human population grew like it did. But its not essential for the body to run. You have societies such as the Eskimos who lived solely off fat and meat with no carb intake. The thing is, protein can be broken down and turned into glucose. The brain needs a minimum amount of glucose to run, but if its not available, it will break down proteins to get it.
@@MinttMeringueI think you got this exactly right. I'm done with fad diets and demonizing food groups. Gained up to 210 on low carb dieting. So switched to a sensible diet with some carbs at a calorie deficit and have lost 45 lbs over a year. I have 20 more to go. I did all the fad dieting and I'm done. But even though I've lost so much, people still try to talk me into the "newest" weight loss plan. I eat mostly home prepared unprocessed foods but around 1200-1500 calories a day.
Low carb was recognised way back then . No cereal breakfasts. Plenty of veg , and healthy fats and protein. Now cereals and junk food seem to be the norm and diabetes is out of control as is obesity.
A food diary is the best thing I ever did. Its shocking the amount and type of food you can consume and not even realize or remember that you did by the end of each day.

It isn't easy on a 1200 calories diet. Trust I have made a very good attempt on such a diet and was successful but it is possible. It isn't easy but possible. Easting more nutritious meals and eating less helps but it isn't the final answer/
It really depends on what you're eating. On Keto I found it extremely easy to stay below 1500. Now that I eat everything again I usually take in 200-300kcal more to be full.
I really like how this video doesn't make you feel bad about yourself and gives different options because, it's true! losing weight can make you feel bad if you're starving yourself or if you stop eating things that you like (the butter/skimmed milk thing as an example)
5:14 still holds true today. This is exactly how I got to a healthy BMI. No ab targeting exercises, no fancy carnivore, Paleo, or other buzzword diets. Just eating a balanced highly nutritious diet. Of course, I also picked up weight training and bike riding, but the diet comes first. Keeping hydrated and getting plenty of sleep is important too.
This is actually a helpful video...If you aren't as active as the average person, you don't need to take in as many calories. The reason that people could eat the kinds of foods that they did back in the 50s were that their everyday work activities expended more energy, they ate reasonable portions of food, home cooked food was the norm, and they were more active in their free time as well (since they didn't have 50 tv channels, video games, etc...)
Servings were smaller as were plate surfaces. For some reason doctors boosted caloric intake just as children and younger adults discovered vid gaming. Eat what you work..eat a lot..get real active.

Wow. It was known even 70 years ago that "calories in, calories out" is the only way to lose weight, and they emphasized high protein and fat consumption for satiation. This should be well known information, yet influencers selling FAD diets and eating regimines still prevail!
I do think the number of quick choices that are often either unhealthy or too big of a portion do not help us. Back then, they mostly cooked anyway, so it was simpler to just count and reduce. Not that it was ever easy, but they weren't changing a food preparation mindset on top of it.
Wow, this video aged well! A level-headed, no-nonsense approach to weight loss with zero fat shaming and it's absolutely correct. Counting calories is the way, it's how I lost weight. You have to count them because you don't want to be eating too few either, it's about getting healthier after all. Nowadays we also know about things like BMR and TDEE, so 1400 calories may work well for one woman but not another. Depends on height, weight and activity level. But yeah counting calories now is much easier than it would've been in the fifties. Ready meals are often villified but they were actually great in my weight loss journey, because I knew exactly how many calories were in them and it made my life a bit easier.

It’s interesting that overweight had become a problem by 1951. Through the war years and in the 1930’s and before, the main problem was being underweight, especially children. During the Depression, many people didn’t get enough to eat and/or ate a nutritionally poor diet. My Mom was underweight throughout her childhood, not attaining a proper weight until her late teens. At that time she was working full time and with her mother’s income, they were able to afford more and better foods.

For many people, so-called lactose “intolerance” is a treatable condition. Unfortunately so many people today are more confused and misinformed about food than ever before due to corporations trying to make a quick buck off fad diets that do more harm than good.
One thing I do is weighing myself almost daily, naked. So that I get an accurate number. The video says once a week. Also, if you eat a protein, one vegetable that is a starch and one that is not a starch, these three things will work together to fill you up, and keep you feeling full for longer.
Such a good video and so old! I really enjoyed that the narrator noted someone not following the dietary plan fully, but still lost weight so counted as a success. Smarter food choices/replacements, no snacking.
It really is amazing how calories build up so quickly and turning to snack foods when at work. Practical as it shows over a period of 4 months 20 to 30 pound weight losses ... not crash diet in weeks. Thanks for the video

This video is 71 years old, and it’s as true today as it was back then. It’s not a crazy plan that requires eliminating food groups, it’s not a starvation diet, and it doesn’t require fasting. It also highlights how people underestimate the amount of calories that they eat.
I recently saw a video of what 2000 calories look like from fast food places, many of them would be eaten as one meal, and that's your calories for the day
@@k__d28 Fast food can definitely have a lot of calories and it depends on what you get, but 2000 calories in 1 meal doesn't seem right. I checked McDonalds and the big mac meal or 10 piece nugget meal both come out below 1000.
I guess if you get a large everything and a shake to go with it, it would be pretty close. I don't know how common that is though.

@@snowangelgirl1 Yes you have to diet for the rest of your life or the weight creeps back on. Exercise helps too but you still need to diet. Everyone is different though. I've know people that keep weight off by exercising alone but that only works for some people. We have different calories needs.

You become more efficient at storing fat, your resting metabolic rate slows, and you burn fewer calories every day. Meanwhile, your body keeps demanding food and nutrition, so even if you have lots of body fat that can be used as "fuel," your body is going to keep sending hunger signals.

Foods are way more processed than they used to be in the 1950s. Plus, we now have to deal with many hidden sugars in much of our food staples. So, it can be difficult to navigate what is right to eat, especially when the current Standard American Diet rules are dated and often doing more damage than good. And that doesn't even take into account things like education and class and how there's so many "food deserts" in lower income neighborhoods, making eating healthy more of challenge for many people. It's just not so simple for many people.
Maybe following the advice of this film is WHY people are fatter today. Because the calorie construct is flawed.

It was not necessary. No animal in the wild "counts calories" but every single of these have their perfect weight.
If the food is abundand the animals don't get fat but reproduce rapidly. The body of each animals have perfect body-weight regulation.
The only occasion when animals get fat is when these are to be prepared for the winter in order to survive that period of the year.
It has been shown that sugar (fructose/sucrose) is what is signaling to the body to get "prepared for the winter" as abundand fruit comes in the late sommer and in the fall.
Obesity in humans (and human-fed animals) is not caused by "excess calories" but by dysregulated metabolism which is caused by 1) the type of food we eat, especially sugar, other carbohydrates and "vegetable" oils (seed oils), 2) too frequent meals, 3) sleep deprivation, 4) stress.
"Calories" are just a complete bullsht and "counting calories" doesn't help long term.
Summary of the diet:
- Eat 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
- Focus on including a fat source, protein source, and a fruit or vegetable at every meal
- Exercise regularly

So much milk and cheese, then you notice the video was made by the National Dairy Council. Interesting to note, though, that a high-fat, high-protein diet with lots of vegetables was recommended back then and the diet included very little processed sugar. It seems we all went through a long period where fat was viewed as the baddie, not sugar, and now that idea has been totally reversed. Also interesting to see that overweight people in the '50s were completely different and much thinner than overweight people nowadays.
See, during this time, and I'll give just a summary, no need to go into all of the detail, but basically, the president had a heart attack, and the issue of heart disease was thrust into public view. At the time, two scientists were at war with each other, an american, who claimed fat was the problem for declining health, while a British one declared that sugar was to blame. Well, the American won, and soon after, fat was to blame, and sugar was exonerated. Food companies started removing fat from packaged foods, which in turn, had them adding more sugar to compensate.
Then, a combination of factors, mainly the influence of the food and beverage companies, declared sugar to be safe, and boy, did society go for it. We were ingesting more and more, taking out fat that wasn't all that unhealthy to begin with, and so began the downfall. Society pushed the idea of a low fat diet and how all calories were the same, when they weren't. Personal responsibility only went so far with companies pushing these ideas. This is one of the biggest factors of why there is so much sugar in our diets now. Yes, true, and it's a relatively recent reversal. I am only 30 and even I, as a child, was taught that sugar was bad for you teeth, but nothing else. It was only when I reached my later teens that people were really pointing to sugar as part of the obesity epidemic

Eat one quality meat meal a day and stop when you are full. No need to count anything.

I've tried as little as only one meal per two days and up to as many as six meals per day. I've found 3-5, most often 4, meals per day works best for me. I lift and do cardio training, so getting doses of nutrients throughout the day is best for my lifestyle. Get enough amino acids from high-quality protein sources (eggs, meats, dairy, etc.) at each meal, get enough fatty acids for hormonal health (I prefer more in the morning and/or evening, and I prefer seafood or legume/nut sources), then fill in the energy needs with carbohydrates (peri-workout is best), fiber is important for gut health and feeling full, get plenty of fiber + micro-nutrients from veggies/fruit (and daily multivitamin capsules if needed). I like a nice bowl of Greek yogurt as my final meal, usually with berries and a little vanilla whey powder. 💪 I used to track macronutrients daily until I now know how to "estimate by eye" most meals and I have a knowledge of the macro profiles of most foods I encounter.
Until you know that calorie in label can be 20 % higher acording to FDA, so the people that tried counting calories and still fat get disappointed from the result and then getting lazy to do weight lose project.

It is widely known that being overweight shortens life span through extra stress on the body (especially the heart), high blood pressure, etc. While some heavier people can be of OK health, they are not the norm and certainly not the majority. Some people die in car crashes while wearing their seat belts, but that doesn't mean that as a rule seat belts don't save lives.

I agree , it’s simple wholesome foods in a satisfying amounts rather than processed foods full of chemicals that provide little to no satiety. Include some simple activity and patience for the weight to come off . But today’s society is so bent on the quick fix and the need to kill themselves for hours in the gym with stress levels so high that cortisol levels make it harder to lose the weight . It’s an awful cycle .

I was so much happier when I lost weight. I ate much healthier.... no processed foods . ... being more aware of portion size and exercised a lot more. I lost 70 lbs and have kept it off for 20 years. I’m really happy I did it when I was younger when it was easier to do.
25 years ago I dieted and treadmilled from 160 down to 135 in about 2 1/2 months. I felt great! Just made treadmilling a habit 4X a week for 1 hour nonstop.
Yes! I agree you should train yourself to eat healthy at a younger age so you can carry those habits with you when you get older. I also check my weight every so often and will go on mini diets so I only have 5 lbs to lose vs 20+.

This is very close to the eating plan I changed to 21 years ago (more protein & fat, plenty of fruit, veg & dairy) after 10 years of that ridiculous low-fat eating of the 1980s & early 1990s. It took off my excess weight slowly, because I really hate being hungry, so aimed for about 1700 - 1800 calories a day. Haven’t changed the plan and the weight has all stayed off.

Both of my grandmas, born in the 20s, told me that back in their day, it was common sense among women that if you gained a few pounds, you cut out all white foods and desserts until you lost them again. Amazing how what was common sense back then has disappeared and then been 'discovered' again by science.
No one is happy overweight that I know of. I was obese for a long time before I finally realized that no matter how much I worked out, it was the food and eating habits that were the problem. It took 1.5 years to lose 75 lbs by reducing my calorie intake. The world needs to be more honest about obesity and the health/mental issues that come with it.
What was considered overweight would be normal weight these days. It’s amazing to see how the shift in the food pyramid messed up so many people. The “diet” featured here is healthy, nutritious, low calorie, and satisfying. Great video!!!

These fad diets are a bunch of crock. Atkins, Keto, etc may work in the beginning but when it comes down to it you need to eat whole foods, particularly high in protein to keep you satiated for longer periods of time so you don’t snack in between.
It's multi-factorial. I think it's plain to see there's a far greater abundance of high calorie palatable foods these days. And now it can be delivered to your door from ANYWHERE. Plus, physical education is not prioritized. Take all that nonsense we learn about fake social justice out of schools and replace it with physical and nutrition education from K-12. We'd be a much healthier, friendlier, and happy society.
Of course, one of the biggest reasons is the amount of power that junk food corporations and their lobbyists have consolidated over the decades. They dictate food advertising and availability. Their involvement in American food policy should be redirected to starving nations. Get them out of our schools and somewhere they can actually help people (those with no food at all).

I gained 30 pounds my freshman year of college, way back in the 90's. I asked my doctor when I was home on break if he had any suggestions. He gave me a pamphlet on the Diabetic exchange diet. It worked! I used it all through my 20's whenever I needed to drop a few pounds. The plan he gave me was:
*7 servings of starch a day( ex. One slice of bread, half a bagel, half a hamburger bun)
*5 servings of protein ( one ounce is a serving)
*2 servings of dairy ( 1 cup milk)
*3 servings of fruit
*3 servings of fat ( one pat of butter, one TBS salad dressing or mayo)
*3-5 servings of vegetables
*Walk for 30 minutes a day
You can find it online, with different calorie options and details about what makes a serving.

Any "diet" will work in you limit the intake and maximize the activity. People will deprive themselves of so much and make themselves miserable because they are lazy. Walk that 30 minutes and your life will change.

I've been a computer chair potato from much of 2000 - now, but from early 2011 - now in Sept. 2022, I've mostly maintained a weight range of 160 - 175 lbs (maybe up around 180 near Christmas) at 5 ft 11. I just don't care to overeat, and I mostly stay away from fast food, though I wasn't always staying away from it from 2011 - now.

1500 calories of mcdonalds (roughly 1 big mac, 1 large fry, and 1 mcflurry) are basically empty in nutrients, super processed, addictive, and made to basically slide through you, you will be done in like 15 minutes and hungry again in, at most, 3 hours
whereas 1500 calories of real food can be an entire 3 meals and a snack, an entire days worth of food without skipping any meal, and most importantly you can fit in all the nutrients (especially fiber and protein, which keep you fuller longer)

Well, you read between the lines wrong.
No proof? At the 01:00 mark it says "The National Dairy Council" paid for the video with help from Michigan State College. Which is why I was laughing at how transparent the conflict of interests is, they don't even try to hide it like they definitely would today. It's representative of a more innocent time when the public didn't analyse their advertising quite as much, which is why advertisers worked in a much less subtle way.

Mabey just drink one glass of milk a day. Milk has to many carbs and hard cheddar cheese has less carbs than milk. Mabey children need one glass a day but dont think adults do! Unless you are shinny and your metabolism is high. In high school I started gaining weight a lot and a teacher came to our house to talk to my parents how concerned they were and my parents said we will handle it ourselves. Yep ceral for breakfast and fancy dessert every night! I kept getting fatter! And when I'd turn down dessert cause I told them I hated being fat. My parents would say or just a little siver. Well that little siver was enough to make me want more! I'm paying today now!
Gosh, the wisdom of back then should be resurrected not discarded! (with a few tweaks for the vegan preference). My version for today having struggled to eat sensibly for 40 years is cut out all processed foods and use a side plate instead of a dinner plate. Plus a bowl of fresh veg soup every day. No time for weighing/recording - that can become excessive and dangerous the other way.
My grandmother always ate broth-based soup for lunch and lived to be 91 with no weight problems.
No tweaks for vegans. Eat what you are given or starve.

Real, whole foods are much easier to fit into a 14-1600 calorie day! Down 60 lbs myself this way and have 60 to go.
The trick is to not go back to your old habits once you’re closer to your goals. And you have to address the mental and emotional health aspects. Not many get to be 100+ pounds overweight without there being an underlying cause. Like the video says, some will be glandular, but many more are eating for anxiety, boredom, loneliness... the weight is a symptom in many cases of underlying emotional health issues.

I know your comment is old - but as someone who has gotten up to almost 300lbs, I can 100% confirm in many cases the weight is caused by an underlying emotional health issue (mental issue) in my case - anxiety, depression, and boredom. Going to be following what the video explains alongside a new workout plan and hopefully, it'll help me get my life back on track. :)
My Grandparents generation. They ate 3 squares a day, no snacking in between. Real food in moderation, never ever anything pre-packaged or processed. My grandmother took a 30 minute walk most days. She wasn't on any medications ever...even in her later years. Died in her sleep in her mid 90s. My grandfather lived til his mid 80s, never on meds and such like that either. He died from a lung condition most likely caused by his occupation. Neither ever had any cancer or health conditions in their lives.
Very basic stuff. Real food in moderation & some exercise. Who knew?
Ideally no processed foods. For those low income folks who have no money to pick & choose food but get free charity boxes, we get a lot of processed foods, starches & thankful for whatever is given- but rarely fresh fruits or veggies or lean meats. The low income folks also have less access to medical/ dental care so their life expectancy usually isnt as long as those fortunate to have a little more money to live on. And without molars or teeth, impossible to eat nuts, raw apples, corn, celery, meat.

It makes much more sense why I gain more weight when I'm with my dad. We get fast food almost everyday even though we have food at home, though most of it is old/expired stuffs and/or cereal, ramen, and instant mac and cheese. And when I'm with my mom we eat out less, and we only get slushies or milkshakes from Sonic as we head home on Fridays. Plus she makes food from home and buys food and ingredients for the week from Walmart and Aldi, and makes us eat all of our vegetables and encourages us to have healthy snacks. When it comes to lunches we can only have chips once a week (though over the weekend we tend to pig out on the snacks a little more). And me and my sis don't eat breakfast a lot bc at 6:30am we are not really hungry.

An honest, interesting and informative 'documentary'. I'm in the UK and have an avid interest in WWII, the 1940s/1950s in general. My main manner of eating is by following the ration book style of eating. Things that were bad for you were in very short supply (ie fats, sugar, sweets etc) and the things that were good for you were generally plentiful (vegetables, salad items, some fruits and berries). Very few items were 'processed' so generally the country had a very healthy 'diet'. Plenty of 'ration book recipes' and information online.......... Give it a go !
With the way things are going, looks like we’ll be rationing again soon. low fuel, low stocks, low labour…
I’m a sports nutritionist- this is still good advice. Meat, vegetables, and dairy are nutrient rich foods. You get full faster. You eat foods that your body doesn’t store. Tracking your intake is absolutely necessary. But not underfeeding.

Right as they were getting cars, automatic washers & dryers, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, etc vs walking & carrying your shopping (different places daily, & more frequently), hanging & beating rugs, scrubbing & wringing wash by hand & hanging it on the line, dusting, mopping, washing dishes, etc etc.
It sounds silly but it was a lot of work. I think that might be why women in the '50s were a bit more slender on the whole than men...
Though men had weekend chores like the lawn, raking leaves, fixing things, etc.

And here they’re telling us women were stuck at home with no prospects for a career. All of my aunts went to College - the oldest was born in 1944 and all hispanic. I’m sick of the woe is me lies of today.
@@albertmarble The "woe is me" attitudes are unhelpful, but it is true that only 1.2% of women attended college in the 1950s. Of that, many went for their "M-R-S" degree and simply married a man they met there. Female careers generally did not pay well and were limited - secretary, teacher, phone operator, nurse.
Still works to this day. When I need to lose weight, I simply restrict my caloric intake to 1700Kcals a day and I lose about 1-2 lbs a week. Dosen't matter what I eat so long as I keep to the caloric restriction.
I think the best part of this was the beginning when they said they wanted the volunteers to feel "happy and healthy" like, yes, this is the goal of being a normal weight. Not to go crazy and starve yourself or become unhealthy physically or mentally, but enjoy your food and feel nourished.
And the goal is not to show off your half naked body on the internet for everyone to see/judge.
I love how it is professional, to the point but not talking down to anyone. They give information that is useful and can be taken to a medical professional to discuss and plan.

If you eat real food and watch how much you're eating, you'll be healthy and more importantly, happy. I like to make my desserts from scratch because I can control exactly what's in it. Just fruit can be a really good dessert. The other piece of the puzzle is exercise. It doesn't have to be something awful. Find something you enjoy doing and consider mixing it up and doing different exercises. Think of the exercises as hobbies instead of chores you have to do. Basketball, biking, walking, tennis, soccer, hiking...there are so many things you can try. The best workout for you is the one you'll actually do, so pick something you like. 😃

@@MinttMeringue There is no essential need for carbs. Carbs became a major food source after agriculture took off. Its a contributing factor to why human population grew like it did. But its not essential for the body to run. You have societies such as the Eskimos who lived solely off fat and meat with no carb intake. The thing is, protein can be broken down and turned into glucose. The brain needs a minimum amount of glucose to run, but if its not available, it will break down proteins to get it.

@@MinttMeringueI think you got this exactly right. I'm done with fad diets and demonizing food groups. Gained up to 210 on low carb dieting. So switched to a sensible diet with some carbs at a calorie deficit and have lost 45 lbs over a year. I have 20 more to go. I did all the fad dieting and I'm done. But even though I've lost so much, people still try to talk me into the "newest" weight loss plan. I eat mostly home prepared unprocessed foods but around 1200-1500 calories a day.

Low carb was recognised way back then . No cereal breakfasts. Plenty of veg , and healthy fats and protein. Now cereals and junk food seem to be the norm and diabetes is out of control as is obesity.

I know right? Dr. Now on 600 lb life recommends the people on that show eat 1200 calories a day in three 400 calorie meals. I'm hungry a lot as well. I couldn't imagine eating 2,400 calories every day - I'd probably gain an awful lot of weight!
It isn't easy on a 1200 calories diet. Trust I have made a very good attempt on such a diet and was successful but it is possible. It isn't easy but possible. Easting more nutritious meals and eating less helps but it isn't the final answer/

I'm on medications + menopause and 1100 calories/day was what it took to budge the pounds.
It really depends on what you're eating. On Keto I found it extremely easy to stay below 1500. Now that I eat everything again I usually take in 200-300kcal more to be full.
I really like how this video doesn't make you feel bad about yourself and gives different options because, it's true! losing weight can make you feel bad if you're starving yourself or if you stop eating things that you like (the butter/skimmed milk thing as an example)
5:14 still holds true today. This is exactly how I got to a healthy BMI. No ab targeting exercises, no fancy carnivore, Paleo, or other buzzword diets. Just eating a balanced highly nutritious diet. Of course, I also picked up weight training and bike riding, but the diet comes first. Keeping hydrated and getting plenty of sleep is important too.

This is actually a helpful video...If you aren't as active as the average person, you don't need to take in as many calories. The reason that people could eat the kinds of foods that they did back in the 50s were that their everyday work activities expended more energy, they ate reasonable portions of food, home cooked food was the norm, and they were more active in their free time as well (since they didn't have 50 tv channels, video games, etc...)

The truly sensible thing about this program is that the emphasis is not only on healthy food and proper proportions but doing it slowly.
I love these straight forward how-to videos. I wish they still made these. People need it. I get a lot out of them.

Servings were smaller as were plate surfaces. For some reason doctors boosted caloric intake just as children and younger adults discovered vid gaming. Eat what you work..eat a lot..get real active.

Maybe American plates. Our plates here in Europe generally look the same.
That probably happened around 1979, wasn't there some sort of a governmental push "to save lives" by promoting the low fat food craze in disgusting processed foods for the 1980s? ... When my Dad was a kid and a teenager in the 1950s - 1960s, *no one* really liked to drink soda or eat ice cream that much. Oh, that would exist, but it's a side thing and not a mainstay.
BTW, look up that 7 Up (or is it Coca Cola?) ad that's advertising to young mothers to feed soda pop to their *infant child.*
@@101Volts I am a 1958 kid. Only time we got sodas was as a treat or mom having us sip coke or ginger ale when sick. Sodas had less chemicals no HFCS.
Wow. It was known even 70 years ago that "calories in, calories out" is the only way to lose weight, and they emphasized high protein and fat consumption for satiation. This should be well known information, yet influencers selling FAD diets and eating regimines still prevail!
Plus they didnt have 400 choices of pre-packaged frozen foods and snack cakes
I do think the number of quick choices that are often either unhealthy or too big of a portion do not help us. Back then, they mostly cooked anyway, so it was simpler to just count and reduce. Not that it was ever easy, but they weren't changing a food preparation mindset on top of it.
Wow, this video aged well! A level-headed, no-nonsense approach to weight loss with zero fat shaming and it's absolutely correct. Counting calories is the way, it's how I lost weight. You have to count them because you don't want to be eating too few either, it's about getting healthier after all. Nowadays we also know about things like BMR and TDEE, so 1400 calories may work well for one woman but not another. Depends on height, weight and activity level. But yeah counting calories now is much easier than it would've been in the fifties. Ready meals are often villified but they were actually great in my weight loss journey, because I knew exactly how many calories were in them and it made my life a bit easier.
I feel like this video was made in a way that explains the concepts well, demonstrates how to achieve it step by step and doesn't shame people's eating habit and overall appearance.
It’s interesting that overweight had become a problem by 1951. Through the war years and in the 1930’s and before, the main problem was being underweight, especially children. During the Depression, many people didn’t get enough to eat and/or ate a nutritionally poor diet. My Mom was underweight throughout her childhood, not attaining a proper weight until her late teens. At that time she was working full time and with her mother’s income, they were able to afford more and better foods.
The programme is funded by the National Dairy Council and hop-laaah, milk and dairies must be introduced in every meal for a healthy diet.
The US of 70 years ago had the same corporate problem they have today...

For many people, so-called lactose “intolerance” is a treatable condition. Unfortunately so many people today are more confused and misinformed about food than ever before due to corporations trying to make a quick buck off fad diets that do more harm than good.

This 1951 diet made sense. I like the fact that butter was acceptable, and cheese, too.
One thing I do is weighing myself almost daily, naked. So that I get an accurate number. The video says once a week. Also, if you eat a protein, one vegetable that is a starch and one that is not a starch, these three things will work together to fill you up, and keep you feeling full for longer.

Such a good video and so old! I really enjoyed that the narrator noted someone not following the dietary plan fully, but still lost weight so counted as a success.
Smarter food choices/replacements, no snacking.
It really is amazing how calories build up so quickly and turning to snack foods when at work. Practical as it shows over a period of 4 months 20 to 30 pound weight losses ... not crash diet in weeks. Thanks for the video

This needs to be shown in school again and everywhere on tv and news and all sorts
