really appreciate your explanation of the complex operations. by the way, it looks. like those containers just make it under that overpass.
Yeah, it does look that way from where I'm perched but in reality they have about a 1 foot clearance (still not a lot). Double-stacks need about 19 ft. of vertical clearance and if you look carefully you'll see that the NS line is lower than the Steamtown North Wye track right next to it.... That's because back in the 90s when NS started operating over this line, the track was re-finished to accommodate double-stack traffic.
Also worthy of mention is Linden Street a few hundred feet up.. In past videos you see that funky bend in the track as trains come down the hill, that's for the same reason, so that double-stacks can negotiate the overpass.
Man, you get a train rider on top of that container and he's a dunner for sure!

Trains21 Yeah I think I used to see Soo Line covered hoppers at one point too. Now it’s just the plain gray cars.

The SW1 does seem to be fitted up for MU operation. It has the 27pin socket and the hoses for the independent brakes arent there, but you can see where they could be reinstalled. I think they sometimes operate it with the SW7

I don't like viewing them when I'm in a hurry to get somewhere and the cars just keep on coming and coming and coming... Several times I was late for work because of an extra long freight train.

Thanks man.... I'm glad you enjoyed.... I enjoy industrial switching myself, in fact it's probably my favorite aspect of railfanning.... At some point (probably next year) I want to do a series called "Industrial Switching" which would feature railroads around the country so we'll see how that goes.
As for the present, The L&S is in W-B and operates somewhat sporadically which makes it tough to know when they'll be working.. A better option (at least an easier one) would be the RBMN in the Keyser Valley Industrial Park here in Taylor.. That's a little more predictable so I'll see what I can do about getting some footage of that in the weeks ahead.
And just so you know, I do these "HOW RAILROADS WORK" videos every Monday ;-)
I'd like to see more on the switching at Petrogas in Avoca, PA. I understand the use of the spacer cars mentioned in the video but it would be interesting to see how they use them in their actual switching moves. Looks like they had the train split into several blocks with additional spacer cars. Looking at the site on Google Maps and it looks like it would be an interesting customer to base a model on.
I think it would be.... I've seen the plant and the trains shoving to the plant but never the trains actually "working" the plant.. I'll see if I can't make that happen in the days ahead.
I drive for JB Hunt out of Chicago and Taylor will be a new hub for the Northeast Corridor. Most containers would terminate at the Harrisburg, Pa hub or New Jersey to be delivered up there.
Thank you for that nugget of information.. No doubt the local railfans will be thrilled to hear that.. BTW - I used to drive for JB Hunt myself.. They were my first company when I started trucking. ;-)
Working the salt mine? Yeah, been there and done that. In the long ago as a brakeman for the Houston and Texas Central [SP], I worked the local from Houston to my turnaround in Hearne, Texas. At Hockley, Texas, we would take the spur and travel about two miles to United Salt Mines. What was always a sight to see was the thousands of ducks and geese that wintered in the rice fields surrounding the spur.

Thank you for posting the tab information as well as the great video. Do you think that NS uses the horse logo because of their heritage from the Central of Georgia? After all, the Central of Georgia did have two trains named after two famous race horses, the Nancy Hanks and the Man of War. Guess I'll have to get a letter off to the president of NS. :-) Nice video of the Alco RS-3's and old #26. Didn't know about buffer cars though. Good info. Love that SW-1. A bit noisy though.

That's one helluva plant! I'm assuming the use of buffer cars allows the six axle engines enough leeway to not enter the plant.

14R is the counterpart to 11Z..
It used to be 11R and 12R then it became 11R and 14R.. Now it's 11Z and 14R.. Hope I didn't confuse you.

They were able to add a 3 mile long spur across the flats and tie in to the existing rail line through the Genesee Valley. They just 2 years ago added about 1000' to it to take more cars while loading. They make quite a racket moving in and out of there. I'm not that far away and can hear them when the weather is right.
Your videos are great. Your production shows that you really care to give an accurate account of rail happenings- something we all love. I have a question (perhaps a naive one)...Why is it you see engines of different companies together on the same trains, and why do you not see many American badges in Canada (if at all) in such combinations but you tend to see a fair bit of CN and CP combos with American badges in the U.S.?
Thank you for the kind compliment, I'm glad you enjoy the videos.. It's why I upload them!... There's several reasons that you see different locomotives on different railroads.. The most common reason is horsepower hours owed.. Simply put, say an NS Dash-9 rated at 4,400 h.p. is on UP rails for 3 days. UP would then owe NS that same number of h.p. for 3 days.. Now when you get into the different h.p. ratings for diesels and time spent on other railroads property, the whole thing can get to be very complex and the railroads have entire departments devoted to keeping track of horsepower hours owed.
Another thing to consider is that often times a foreign locomotive CAN'T lead on another railroads property.. This is especially true with Class 1s as things like PTC and cab signals can play a factor.
Another reason you might see foreign power on a line is because it could be new power being delivered to a railroad or old power heading for the scrapper or a new owner..
Lastly, there could be an arrangement between 2 or more roads to POOL power on certain trains.. For example, when NS took over the D&H lines in PA and NY, Trains 11R and 14R began showing up with PAN AM diesels in the consist.. Naturally, there are many other factors that could result in seeing foreign locos, but those are the most common scenarios.
As for why you don't see American diesels in Canada?.. Probably because of Canadian labor rules that require a locomotive to have amenities such as microwaves and hot plates which aren't a requirement on American roads..
Another factor is that the U.S. doesn't own any track in Canada (at least none that I know of) unlike the Canadians which own the Milwaukee Road, ICE, DME, SOO, DM&IR, WC, IC, EJ&E, D&H, BLE and others.. So there's less reason for American locomotives to visit Canada.

Not a busy line at all. Not even daily train traffic. Tuesday and Thursday only I believe.

Like any other railcar.. The rails are flexible, that's why it's often called "ribbon rail."

They are more clearly seen on the tank cars. They are painted yellow vertical stripes, longer ones at each end. Look at 9:52.
That's reflective tape.. It makes locomotives and cars more visible at night.

Out here in Utah and to the west we see lots of the 5-car sets plus singles and 3's.

Why did that crossing at 38:40 have no warning gates?
Not all grade crossings do.. This is a shortline railroad.. The maintenance standards are different than that of a Class 1

I first encountered 2300 there at your place (the very video you saw here on You Tube).. So me and a friend were going to Sayre to catch the SP heritage unit when it was there back on March 16. We were coming across Rte 6 in Wysox when we saw the 2300 sitting in a frac sand station (or something like that).
At first I grabbed a couple of shots from across the road but when we went to the (track side) of the road into a day care center parking lot, we got holy war from the women accusing us of taking pictures of the children.
They took pictures of us, our car, license plate. You name it..
Add to that, the station manager comes over threatening to shoot me (I was the one with taking pictures) because he assumed that I was some sleazy reporter doing a smear story on his operation.
After arguing for about a 15 minutes we finally just left.. All that, for a picture of a locomotive.
Trains21 Thats one hell of a story. Sound similar to what I had to deal with. It was in the morning around 8:30 and my car cross but when I looked through the mirror I saw the gates going down so I went into the parking lot of the daycare place to record the RBMN PIFF on its way back to Pittston. Basically the teacher and moms got pissed because they thought I was a pervert yet you can see a giant train moving fast and I'm pointing my camera at it. So yeah I guess school areas aren't great for railfanning. I don't even film the RBMN PIFF at Avoca anymore even though it leaves at night.

By the reporting mark perhaps. But I don't know for sure.

Company vehicle, company spy.. I don't know their official designation but crews call em' weed weasels.. They're company police types that check to make sure crews are complying with company rules and policies..
Yes, we had them hiding in the bushes at the now defunct Katy/SP interlock in Houston, or pacing trains and checking the speed limit. It's all changed now, but back then no ear plugs and 'riot' vests were required or even thought of. My cousin retired a decade or so ago after 30 years with the SP/UP, and he said there was always someone checking on them to make sure they had their ear plugs and vests on.
I understand the safety concerns but those bright green and/or orange vests to me signaled are too much.
Years ago, an engineer friend of mine took me "inside" a cowl body CN diesel where the prime mover is.. It was LOOUUDD!!!!!!

You made reference to 'Upstate New York'. People use that term for north of Albany NY all the way to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. So where are you referring to with 'Upstate'?
NYCers often refer to anything not NYC as upstate.
Just like Illinois anywhere outside of Chicago is downstate Illinois even those parts of Illinois that are north and west of Chicago such as Rockford, Galena, McHenry, etc.

I'm a canadian and would like your thoughts about the cp rail take over of ns i know that your goverment would have put the kybash on the hole merger....i do think it would have made agreat rail company....your comments please....nothing would happen with watching your great videos...will suportter always
It wasn't so much the merger that bothered me, but E. Hunter Harrison.. You have to remember that CP owned these lines before NS and although never a super busy piece of railroad (at least for 30 years prior), it had lots of potential.. Potential that Harrison stifled with his harsh regime IMHO.
As someone who knew the railroad when it was pure D&H and watching it become ingested by Guilford, Susquehanna and finally CP, I had high hopes when CP took over (along with so many others). For a while it was good but seasons change..

At 38:50 those cars just racing across the tracks in front of an approaching train are not very smart! You could buy the farm real quick that way if your car were to stall.
