What a wonderful trip back in time. Wife and I watched it from end to end. We were both raised in Forty Fort, PA, just west of Wilkes-Barre, but we've lived in Florida the past 30-some years. This is the best way to go back to our roots--good visuals without having to actually be there. On one hand the mountains are marvelous, on the other hand the towns tend to be depressing. Thanks, Jim.
The towns actually look better than some older small towns my wife and I have seen in Georgia, NC, and western half of Virginia. It just occurred to me that those the videographer drove through look very similar to DumontbNJ, where I grew up, and Somerville NJ, which is a lively town.
Thanks, Jim.. I'm glad you enjoyed it.. Little secret.. Had I had known it would be such a popular video I would've gotten additional shots of other coal mining towns like Frackville, Pottstown, Shenandoah, Shamokin, Gilberton et. al..
I have to say, of all of your videos, this is my favorite hands down, the music was excellent. Usually most videos can do without music but this was done to a T. Thank you. Edward
Great video It's sad to see how railroad's built town's and gave job's to so many people in this country and now you see it rusting away and falling apart every where
Wonderful production. Great train shots. Loved the scenic features and town shots. I haven't been back to my beloved NEPA in some time. Good musical accompaniment.
Nice Video! Love to see the historic places of PA and how the railroad used to serve them. I was just up by Selkirk today, video is up. It was too bad I was hoping to get some shots with the leaves but it was totally cloudy so that didn't work... lol
Just curious here. What is it with videoing trains that you have to have the camera as close as possible to the tracks. The trains go by and you barely have enough time to watch and see what is there. It would be nice to have the camera set back a bit so you can actually watch what is in the consist or freight. That first train that went by had an interesting car in it, but the camera was so close and the angle so sharp. I could not make out what it was.
We took a train trip from Jim Thorpe to tamaqua. After we left Jim Thorpe, we had to sit on a siding, while a freight train came along side and stopped. They had to wait while the steam train leave Jim Thorpe and head north. As the steam train was passing, all 3 engines started a “horn symphony”! It sounded great and I’ll never hear one again. I just wish I could have recorded it!
Superb video. Excellent tour of the Anthracite Region. If someone watching had never been to the Anthracite Region they would get a feel for what it looks like.
Just subscribed, One place that I want to go back to is Swoyersville PA, my grandparents lived there and they had tracks running through their back yard. It went to the former Harry E Breaker. The breaker was demolished in 1995. Always loved following the lines went I went to visit.
Thanks for subbing.. I know the town and the tracks you speak of.. I also know (or should I say knew) the breaker you speak of also.. Unfortunately, most of Northeast Pa's rich rail and coal heritage has disappeared.
I know it's such a shame, but its something that I enjoy sharing and showing my son. Another place that is sad to see if the Easton area by the Delaware River. But like I said I really appreciate and enjoy your videos, that along with your choice of music can help me unwind after a crazy day working in Newark
AC, you knocked this Vid out of the park! I have traveled PA with sprint car and kart racing teams through this area. To actually be able to share a table with coal miners and Rail workers who worked at plants, mines, small stores gives you a out look as bleak as your video showed. The grey sky, chilly day, abandoned machinery and the coal breaker shots are a testimony to what was once a Essential part of industry in America. Th
Trains21 Yep, I just never get a chance to chase that job because it happens during the day, Maybe one day I will. But it would be like my PIFF videos where I go to two locations.
Excellent retrospective railfaning video of all those Eastern PA towns. The same thing happened to all of the towns out here in Western PA with the steel industry. A lot of your footage could transpose for towns out here. The narrow state roads with houses and businesses close to the edge.
It was.. The video doesn't do it justice.. That thing is 10-stories high and the land mass it encompasses is massive.. Here's a link to the Wikipedia article on it.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Nicholas_Breaker Also, if Google it you'll get a wealth of other info and pics on it.
Very nice job on this - great music! I believe that those gray Epic containers on flatcars transport sewage sludge from the New York City area. The Wayne Township Landfill in McElhattan PA (Clinton County) is accepting the material for disposal. The forward thinking management at the landfill constructed a rail yard at the site a few years ago in anticipation of this deal. The yard is adjacent to the NS Buffalo line. Kudos to the WTL folks for using rail!!
Thanks for that trip down memory lane. Been to several of those towns growing up in that area and enjoy seeing them again. R&N seems to be thriving there, I hope they continue. Thanks for sharing.
I visited the same area in the summer of 2014 with a rail fan buddy. It's amazing seeing the same routes again in video. We have some nice stills of the St. Nicholas Breaker still intact. We never knew the old Whitcomb diesel was buried in among the weeds and bushes! Looking at old maps, it's amazing and sad to see how much has been lost even in the past couple of decades.
Thank you so much for posting video on Wanamie PA! I am very interested in seeing more of this area and the remains of the CNJ. Is there any abandoned railroad bed left or has that been removed?
Excellent video. Thanks so much. Can you tell me more about the NJ Transit Commuter cars? I see strings of 3 or 4 of them in the Erwin yard in Upstate NY every so often and I'm always curious about where they're coming from and going to.
Excellent job! I've wondered about Mahanoy City, as that is where our bagged anthracite stove coal comes from. Sad that most motorists see trains as a nuisance, a fact that alot of Pa. towns were built around the railroads, like Albion [B&LE] where I hail from.
I've never been to Pennsylvania but watching this video last night a couple of times and again this morning, maybe I have. The way you marry the music with the video sure adds a new dimension. Great video! I'm subscribing. Only one question. What's the song that starts at 3:15?
A confederate flag in Biden Country? According to The Babylon Bee, he got his first job at age 16, driving a Mack truck in a coal mine!😄😄😄. I know that’s just a joke, and seriously, this is a VERY nice video! Great job!
AC: This is the video that got me to subscribe to Trains21 five + years ago. Your choices in music for the video was sublime. It is still my favorite, and I watch it again and again. My Grandparents lived in Swoyersville, that's where my Dad is originally from
Quite familiar with Swoyersville too.. Though I didn't spend a lot of time hanging out there.

Great story. I've never heard of a coal beaker before. You really capture the soul of Pennsylvania.
Thanks Bob, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
great video, not only of the trains but the drive-thru views of the many towns with their pleasant scenes of Americana that still exists..

Outstanding video. I especially like driving through the coal towns of NE PA.
Musical interludes are a nice touch. Some amazing relics, too. 👍

Obrigado, contente que você gostou.
Love those zoom shots! Some very nice footage and details.
Your video popped up to play, and we just drove that way home from catching 11z last Thursday in Nescopeck.
damn very nice keep up the good work
Thanks! :-)
Totally awesome!! I wish I could record 36T. Jim Thorpe is memory lane for me!
Thanks, Man!!
Pa looks a lot like some of the towns and country when I lived in North Carolina, west Virginia is a bitter sweet place to visit
Yes it can be.
What can I say another great one , but sad at the same time.
Thanks again, Jay.. Yes, I know, very bittersweet.
I liked the 1957 Chevy convertible @ 23:58. In awesome condition.
Yeah, that was nice!
Good video, loved the music.
Thanks
Great video man

They come from North Jersey and they go to either Bombardier in Dansville or Alstrom in Hornell for routine maintenance and/or repair.

Nice Video, I can't believe you didn't visit High Bridge in Hometown that is North of the Hazleton Junction...
Next time!
Hasn’t R&N taken over rail service in the Hazelton area from NS?
awesome video
Thanks, Coleman
Graveyard area, excellent filming
Ya think
11z is rolling by fast!!
Thanks for the heads up.
Interesting.

Very cool AC!

it has to be a JOKE, this clown NEVER had a REAL JOB in his life......
Hope all is well AC!!
Nice video....
Thanks, Johnny..
What song is used from 27:56 to the end of the video? So peaceful
How sad that our own coal ind has taken a huge hit over the past 20+ years. Coal will never be the same.
Sad indeed.
There's just no demand. It's not sustainable and electric companies that use coal are moving away from it.

I was under the impression that R&D has continued under Progress Rail, and that the Tier 4 emission requirement was posing a big challenge.
How about that train at 9:08 with intermodal, manifest freight, and double-deck passenger cars all in one
Whats the purpose of the NJ Transit cars on the end of the NS trains? Delivering to Destination?
What if I saw a train In Weissport? I never see one very often.

What were the passenger cars at the end of the manifest at the beginning?
NJ Transit cars retuning to New Jersey
PENNSYLTUCKY, the KEYSTONE state! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Actually it was Obama's regulations why coal was on the decline.
When you drove through Hazelton, did you drive past the former Studebaker car dealership?
Yes I did!
14:00 looks like a parking lot for locomotives
I know, right.
What's the the cars marked 'EPIC'?
Waste containers
Thanks, sorry for being such a question box...

what was train 36T carrying
A mixed bag of commodities.
What camera are you using? And well edited!
Question 2- Why are the names on some of the boxcars painted over?
Perhaps graffiti or new reporting marks most likely.
no coal being hauled?
Go to West Virginia, I heard coal is still being hauled there
No demand
that's right,,,,,,,,,,and all thanks to our screwed up gov't bowing down to even more idiot tree huggers.........
Seeing all of those tagged freight cars, it seems to me that RR police are much better at chasing railfans than at chasing car taggers.😢
At 15:29 you can see the old railroad support that used to hold an lehigh valley or cnj or reading railroad lines
Maybe, I'm not sure.
I remember seeing pictures of this train last year, how come it took you a long time to release the footage?
I have 2 years of footage and shoot more all of the time but can only put out a little each day.. It's a combination of things that determine which footage is released at a particular time.
Trains21 Understandable.
Why did the train come to a stop at 19:00?
Don't know.
Thanks for the video. I was wondering where I could use my WIC and EBT cards in Hazelton.
HaHa.. Now you know!
Alas, Saint Nicholas soon won't, oooops, is no longer there...
Shakes head.. :-(
I mean far left of the screen my bad lol
Understood.. Still not sure.
Haulin ass!
Indeed!
Hate graffiti. Ruins the entire viewing process IMHO.
Maybe.. But it's prevelent AND it's probably here to stay.. :-|
Trains21 I’ve seen serious modelers on RUclips like Per Larsson with Summit who incorporate graffiti into their weathering.
