- First Wildcamp of 2023
I rode out on mt "On One" Bootzipper adventure bike to experience a wonderful Wildcamping adventure using the Wild Country Helm 1 Compact.
First time I've used this tent and I am very happy with how it performed.
The tent seems very well thought out and was very stable in gusty conditions though I was careful to select a sheltered spot to pitch.
I camped in ancient landscape unchanged since Neolithic times and practiced "Leave No Trace". I pitched late and left early.
I hope you enjoy my first Wild Camp of the New Year.
Music used was all from the RUclips Audio Library

What incredible stamina you have Sandy. Most people of our age would find that incredibly tough but you seem to take it in your stride.
Great drone shot of the stones. Just magical
Just to add to my previous comment. Your videos are some of the most relaxing videos I've watched I love the way you and JB outdoors and English Woodsman make your videos. I hope you don't mind me mentioning them but it's nice to see people who responsibly promote the hobby. Thanks again Al👍🍻
Enjoyed that ATVB For 23 Sandy 👍🏻
I love all your Videos Sandy but I feel this one is extra special.Ancient Wiltshire is heaven on Earth to me. There is just something hard to describe about being in this sacred landscape. Maybe in our own past lives we were part of this landscape . Who knows but, it does something very deep in my soul. It feels like we are connecting to our past. My late Mother felt the same way too. She was born near Marlborough and used to visualize Roman Soldiers Marching across the Downs as a child. Thank you so much for these videos. I feel we are old friends.
They are indeed sacred landscapes Colin
Many a night I slept up near there. I need to start again . Beautiful videos ,really nice enjoyable viewing.
Hi Sandy.
Great upload Thank you.
Think I'll have a bacon sarnie now.
🤣🤣
Cheers mate.

Hi a lovely video, such a nice place to visit, lovely and peaceful.
Another great video Sandy thank you for sharing
Wonderful
Great video. I'm lucky enough to live right on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, lots of ancient earthworks and Tumuli etc also only about an hour's ride up to the Jurassic coast around Whitby. Keep up the good work Cheers Al🍻
A wonderful video, thanks for sharing your adventures. Happy New year to you too.
Hi, this was a very enjoyable watch. Thank you. I particularly liked the drone footage. 😊

Awesome video!
Thanks for the video Sandy. Belated congratulations on becoming a grandad. Stay free mate. Martin WB
Thanks Martin and Yes!
Wonderful video! How you Brits camp in the rain and mud is so impressive!
We have no choice Jason, It rains a lot over here :)
Not a trip for the faint of heart. Looks as though you made the best out of what many would consider very miserable conditions
Hi Lonnie
The average temps in the UK this time of year are around 40 to 45f so dampness just accumulates and things become very muddy.
Back in the Roman times Brittania was a place they really didn't want to come to because of the damp and cold
This is one of the best of yours Sandy I’ve seen. Definitely the most chilled. Love that tent. Inspires me to have a go!!
It's a nice area to explore Mark
thoroughly enjoyable as usual Sandy - many thanks
Happy and Healthy new year Sandy…73
nice one
Thankyou again for your vid! Hope you’re getting loads of cuddles!! X
I can't wait or him to grow up a bit then he can come camping with me: )
@@WiltshireMan I know that feeling!! This summer I will be taking my grandson out and about. His mum??? Naaaaa! C
Wonderful! Had a few of those deep puddles myself recently. Like your posistive commentary. Like everything! Many thanks.
When i was working away from home in Reading , most weekends rather than go home (its bloody miles) i'd drive to Salisbury sometimes but more often i'd go to Avebury and do a fair old circular on foot around that area you've just shown . Always an interesting place . Bought back some good memories .
Enjoyed the film 👍💚
Thanks, there are some lovely circular walks around there
Happy New Year to you Sandy.
Nice to see the Dolman Stone in winter. I think you took some drone footage there last summer when the farmer was harvesting. Interesting tent, maybe it might take a folded Brompton in one side of the porch?
I’ve previously seen large rocks being split using Neolithic hand drills to create holes, then wooden wedges hammered in the rock to cause the rock to fracture apart.
Sandy I was hoping to see a camping video thank you.
Those views from the top of the Ridge are very dramatic, especially with the threatening skies as a backdrop. Nice pitch too, looked like a cracking night 👍
Great film to start the year off Sandy. Some really nice views of the surrounding area. The good thing about the inclement weather usually means you get the place to yourself. Thanks for taking us on the trip with you.
One of the little joys of life eating a sweet treat when my two dogs are not begging at my feet.
Blimey so alike I am looking at that tent for bikepacking cheers Sandy Hooe you and family well
It's a good winter tent Pete
Nice footage from the drone as you rode through the valley of stone. Interesting and peaceful part of our world. Thank you.
Your video's are that good they should be on the TV 📺 😉
You are so kind GS
Thank you Sandy....! I live in Washington state in the US. My Dad's mom is from NE England. I want to go there someday.
great video love the cinematography music that must’ve taken ages!
Yes, it takes a while to edit but I enjoy the process :)
Thanks for your video Sandy, really enjoyed it, and also congratulations on becoming a grandad. Looking forward to all your adventures in 2023

Thanks Russel
Thanks Sandy, your an inspiration. Good set up with the new tent.
I had a friend lived in Devizes, cycled there from Leicester on one occasion.
Its a great area
Cheers 🍻
We’ll done Sandy! It’s easy to go camping in good weather, you’ve proved it’s just as easy to go camping in the rain, cold and inclement weather, love your transport!! Doing what it was made for. Keep safe. P
Thanks P, I do enjoy bad weather camping, I find it relaxing and also fewer people are about. That suits me :)
New subscriber and looking forward to you're videos , this one's great
Thanks Russ,
I shall be doing a fair bit of wild camping, cycling and motorcycling over the coming year, so hopefully you will enjoy those videos
Sandy
hahahahaha🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Possibly the best understatement of the year so far ....Its a bit grim outside so I will stay in here and formulate a plan ..... in other words ,,,Im staying in bed till it gets warmer !
Haa yes it was a bit grim to be honest but once I got going it wasn't soo bad. Rain always sounds worse when your in a tent
Wish you all the best for 2023 Sandy.
Greetings from 🇩🇪
Well sandy if you can't be seen they will surely will smell the cooking,,cheers and happy new year,,,,
Great video! I love the interesting facts and back stories to the places you go to. The new tent held up well too! Looking forward to the next video. 👍
Thanks Lynn,
Here in Wiltshire there is quite a lot of history and a few stories too:)
Nice one Sandy, excellent choice of tent, really enjoyed watching.
big old beast that stone, when i saw your aerial shot
It must weigh a lot Robert
Just what I needed Sandy. Great video. I need yo come and ride with you

A good camp video to start off 2023 bro ya sure have some interesting places up your way. Safe travels
"The Devil's Den"
The name was a way to put fear into locals and remind Pagans to convert to the ‘true faith’.
Fantastic drone shots of an enigmatic spot.
Wish you a peaceful, prosperous 2023!
Thanks, Sandy. Loved the cinematic opening shots. 🙂👍🚴♀️
Glad you enjoyed it Brian
happy new year m8
Superb video Sandy. Thanks for going to all the effort that these videos entail, your efforts are fully appreciated. Happy new year to you all.
Thanks John it is a lot of work, but all good fun
You do like a challenge 😁👍. That meal hit the spot. Keep it simple and tasty 👍
Haaha Meal sure was simple and tasty Ken, and good fibre too.
I'm enjoying a challenge even though I'm now in my 60's.
Hope you had a good Christmas and all the best for the New year : )
Thank you. Best for 2023 :D
That is hardcore camping in that weather Sandy! Another great video ,loved the drone footage of the Neolithic site.
Happy new year Sandy and many thanks for a super video.... Beautiful part of the world too😎👌 KTF🙏
Happy New Year to you Sandy.
As usual another great video 👍
Another comment for the algorithm. Great video, as I said. The tent looks awesome. Your wild camping videos are the best.
Haa Thanks Bjorn,
The Algorythm does not like me because RUclips never promotes my channel.I've been here for years slogging away and still a small channel. But channel size isn't the most important, I guess the real reason I am still here doing this is because I get a lot of pleasure and fun from making the videos. A bit more income from the channel would help though then I could buy better camera equipment:)
Sandy 10/10 The journey of a true Wildcamper.
Hi Sandy. I was drawn to your video by its title. I am also a Helm Compact1 owner, and like it more every time I use it. You made the wise decision to get the footprint ( I didn't). Your video is very easy to watch, and its a delight to see your cooking. Fair play to pitch where you did, I would be imagining all sorts if Id pitched there, I would be hearing all those ancient folk moving around at night👻. Hope that 2023 is good to you. Take care 👍
Thanks Andrew, yes the footprint was a wise buy. As for the ghosts, they must have all been blown away by the wind :)
Happy new year! Great video it was like being there thanks Sandy.
Great to see you out and about sandy that tent looks good you seemed to have a nice night in it that’s for sure keep safe and well and I’m with you with the 2023 thing 🤞😕😳🤔
Hi Marcus I had a lovely camp in the Helm1. Happy new year to you and Rachel
Luved this Sandy. Your delivery is so professional and the cinematography is just first rate.
Watching this once is never enough.
Thank you.
Neil
Thanks for watching Neil
That was a great watch Sandy! The music, drone footage, great location, fab tent, fine dinner & hob nobs all worked 😊 The tent did really well in those conditions and it looked like a great trip to make from home. The advantages of a bike with bigger wheels to negotiate the terrain!! Lovely video - best wishes for 2023!! 😀
I'd struggle to get my Brompton to do a trip like this Miriam, definately an MTB ride. I'm very pleased with the tent, a wise purchase. Maybe not quite as well built as your Hilleberg though but Dave (Border Rambler) sold his Akto to buy a Helm compact 1 : )
Happy New Year
Sandy
@@WiltshireMan Not a chance the Brompton could negotiate that mud without numerous falls 😀 Yeah I saw Dave sold his Akto and bought the Helm 1 - it definitely seems to be a good buy! I'm 5'8'' so the Akto isn't too bad for me. A few nights on the trot locked up in it wouldn't be pleasant but I'll be keeping it for now anyway 🙂 You made a great purchase!!
I love this type of video, all the relaxation of the feeling of being there.
Thankyou : )
Injoyed that sat at home with covid brilliant filming from drone as you cycling away though valley of the stones
Stunning place to camp very enjoyable to watch sandy.
Thanks Andy
Genuinely such a wonderful video, the simple pleasures of cycling and out camping. Beautifully edited! Thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Was wanting to get a tent so I can get out and about. Thank you for the inspiration!
I'd like to say that rock had possibly cracked from water freezing.
Keep up the great work 🙏
Hi Gary thanks, Glad to know you have enjoyed the video. Someone else also mention water freeze cracks rocks
That’s a fascinating spot Sandy. And haven’t we have had so much rain ? Hoping all is good with yourself and all the family (esp. the new addition ❤).
Your camera work is so professional - nice one Mate 🏕️😊👍
Thanks Giles, thats very kind of you, I do enjoy filming and the learning curve that goes along with it.
Yes, it's been a very wet winter, I do enjoy camping in inclement weather though so I'm not complaining:)
Thanks for the video Mr W. Looked like a great adventure, keep them coming please 👍
Lovely vid. What an amazing spot. Devils Den hardly gets any visitors. Such a fantastic area. Thanks for sharing.
It's quite remote and off the beaten track Steve
A great video Sandy, Your knowledge of Neolithic Britain is impressive.
Thanks John and I hope we all have a good new year
Hi Sandy
Yes, the Helm 1 is a super tent.
I took mine to the Isle of Man last year, and, despite not using the guy lines, it performed marvelously in 40+ mph winds and heavy rain.
I recently purchased the helm 2 as I fancied some more space, and I will be using it very soon.
Hope you didn't get too wet on your ride home.
Thanke LW. I did get a bit wet on the return journey but skin is waterproof...Up to a point!
Happy New year to you and yes camping food always tastes great, must be the fresh air .Good video and good tent.thanks.
Came across you all by chance enjoyed your video I'm into motorbikes I have a triumph Bonville go camping with it motorbike rallys festivals sometimes do a bit of touring Scotland I live in the northeast but I'm very impressed in what you're doing you make me feel so humble one day I might do things your way instead
I also ride a motorcycle Ian
Loved this. A thoroughly enjoyable watch Sandy👍
Great video again , happy New Year and God Bless you and your family
Hi Dan, happy new year
🇨🇦
👌👌❤❤👍👍Looks lighter than Hilleberg Akto.
Nice atmospheric location and music, and what better way to unwind with a Bry episode and your longeding for rain on the tent. A lovely calm film. All the best mate. Harry.
Thanks Harry and all the best for the new year
Hi Sandy another very enjoyable video, always look forward to your adventures .best wishes Roy ( Oz)
Thanks Roy
Great video sandy .
Thanks Wozza
David Ireland said he and you and John are doing the NC500 in April and he invited me and Dickie to join you guys. Tell him we would like to join you on this adventure, there will be one other and thats Harry, he's Dickies boss at work. We need some hard dates so Dickie and Harry can book time off. I think I have JP's email so will contact him that way also.
Sandy
@@WiltshireMan we going 7th April John got details 😉 I booked you a3 pitches on first campsite.
Bletarn farm campsite nr Carlisle Airport.
@@wozamotorbikeadventures7855 Cheers Woza, Yes I know, David contacted me. Looking fwd to it so is Harry and Dickie, it should be a great adventure:)
Thx Sandy for another great video.... I needed that..... talk later GRANDPA
Haaa Yes old Grandad here now : )
That’s a really nice place to camp. I could just imagine a large settlement of folk living there sheltered from the wind thousands years ago. You did so well copping with those big puddles and videoing at the same time. All the best for 2023. Phil S. 🇬🇧
Thanks Phil and all the best for the new year too
Be careful Sandy, with those puddles, here in Yorkshire, we've had a problem on a stretch of road nearby, (over the holidays), where over 40 cars were damaged in one day, (before the police stepped in) by going through a "puddle",, and getting flat tyres, and underbody damage,, obviously there's no way of knowing how deep they are, until it's too late,, better safe than sorry,, all the best,, John
ps,, luckily, I wasn't one of the poor beggars with car damage, but a friend of a friend was 😱
Ah thats not good, yes you don't know how dep they are or whats in the bottom of them
