- Almost at the Equinox now so Spring is about to get going, but in this camp I get to experience the "Sting" in Winters Tale. It was a cold bleak Camp but thanks to my stove and tent I managed to stay warm (only just though)
This is a draughty old wood at this time of year.

Being an Aussie girl I always love seeing countryside and woodlands over in the UK and other countries. Thankyou for letting us "go along" with you on your trips.
Thanks for sharing your time outdoors, the sheer effort behind all the camera placements to create the journey and camp is greatly appreciated, I need to get out myself at some point!!
We will have to do a collab camp at some point Scott
Absolutely game on guys
Admirable Sandy, does the wood still a release pen ?
Sign me up for the next trip !
Love the solo camp and you captured some glorious birdsong. Completely agree, hurry up Spring! I've only managed one camp myself this year with how crap the weather has been. Thanks so much for taking us along.
Soon be Spring Oscar:)
Thankyou friend 😊
Enjoyed the camp vid. Thumbs up my friend.
Thanks Lonnie,
It is always nice to spend time in the woods even though it was damp cold and draughty. Spring is starting now and the birds are singing:)
These Wiltshire Man chronicles are so awesome. Such wonderful short films. Thanks again for another great video. These really make my life more pleasurable in a huge way.
Mark from Maryland
Mark, It makes it all worthwhile when I know I may have influenced someone's life in a postive way :)
Agree 100% Lee in Salisbury
You have to really love camping to be out in those conditions but we all know that you do love every minute of it Sandy. You always put together a very functional setup when you go. Spring is just around the corner and plans are rolling around in our heads. I enjoy the anticipation and preparations almost as much as the actual camping I think. Your camping lamp collection is always very fascinating and enjoyable to behold my friend. Thanks for taking us along with you again and I will look forward to seeing you on the next one. Stay safe and stay healthy.
Thanks Terry I am always amazed at how bright a humble candle lantern can be once your eye's have become accustomed to the dark, there really is no need for anything brighter unless you want to read a book
Nobody could accuse you of being a fairweather camper, Sandy. There's defiinitely a stark beauty to to the woodland in winter, but with that northely wind whipping through, it makes life a bit more challenging. Thanks for posting. I know it takes a lot of work to put these videos together.
Hi Steve, It's all good fun, I enjoy the whole process of filming and editing and then I also get to camp, so whats not to like. The panniers are really coming in handy now:)
@@WiltshireManSo glad they're useful to you.
Thank you Sandy I really enjoyed your lovely video, I liked your candle lantern. I love your dogs, so pleased to see you .
Thanks Anne, Glad you enjoyed my woods camp:)
You can’t beat an occasional personal endurance test. Cheers Sandy.
Thanks yet again Sandy - always enjoy your videos and find them relaxing - cheers
Dogs will always reveal the character of their masters. You're obviously a good man, Sandy.
Haaa, well I do really love and care for my dogs:)
Hi Sandy, like me you can’t wait for Spring & some sun on our backs,it’s seemed like a long haul this Winter, you tube & your videos especially have kept me upbeat,I’m off out today for a bike ride & some fresh air myself, atb Colin P 👍.
Welldone Colin, I hope you enjoy your bike ride. I have just taken delivery of a couple of new ebikes, They were sent to me for free to make video's on. I am really surprised just how good they are, but for a multi day adventure I would still choose human pedal power:)
At 81 It now takes me all my time to get out with my aerial and mast, and operate CW QRP Portable for a short time without my bike . Amazing Sandy many thanks .. your efforts much appreciated
I shall have to get out and do some QRP CW this year
Very convenient for you to get away in the quiet woods and only be a short distance from home. The wood stove, tent, candle light and your cooking make a nice winter camp. Thank you.
As usual Sandy, an excellent video and way to spend a pleasant evening.
Excellent camping there. Can’t get over the lack of front gardens there at the start. All paved driveways 😄. Makes you wonder why they moved out of the cities in the first place.
Love watching your videos. You obviously put a lot of time and effort into them. Still can't believe
you got all that gear on your bike. Especially the flue! God bless you.
Getting the flu on the bike was no trouble, It rolls up really small and is made from thin titanium. Thanks for watching
Good military exercise weather that sandy. If it’s not raining it’s not training 😂 carmen is a right daddy’s dog, she loves ya. 😉 ❤
Haa thats right Marcus, if you can survive a cold damp English woods then you'll be OK almost anywhere
Glad to see you back, we were starting to worry where you'd got to.
Hi The... I try to make a video atleast once a week if I have some content worth sharing. Also try to camp atleast once every month and have done that for the last 15 years
Thanks for the upload bud.
That salmon meal looks awesome.
Keep up the great work.
Cheers.
Lovely video I admire your respect for your environment.
I remember Joe Robinet testing one of those stoves and cutting his fingers to shreds on the chimney because of the way you have to roll it from sheet metal, more or less, I'd say that's a major design flaw!
Most lightweight stoves use this type of chimney
@@WiltshireMan Most of the alternatives stoves chimneys I've seen on other channels come in sections that slot together and are stored inside the stove. Kent Survival used such a stove recently to camp in an abandoned ambulance.
@@Jamal_Tyrone Yes those stoves do exist but I think you'll find that most flat pack stoves use a roll of thin Titanium for the flu
Good to see you out camping Sandy. I have nor been out camping or on my bike for awhile.
Nice Vid Sandy, perhaps roll some of those long bits of tree near the Tent to act as a excluder at foot of the tent.
A Guy of Your Talent could easily make up a Apron for the tent bottom, press Stud fittings ?.
Both Dogs really missed you 👍
Such a good video Sandy, really enjoyable as always
Brilliant video, better at lowering my blood pressure than medication, love the candle lantern 👍
Hi Terry, I feel the Doctors medications can do more harm than good sometimes. A good diet, not drinking so much alcohol and lowering stress levels are the way to go. Also take some vit D it's good and we all need it especially in the Winter
@@WiltshireMan think you're right on that one sandy
Another great video Sandy. So relaxing. I love your tenacity with winter camping.
On another note, I have now completed my move back to Upper Stratton (I’m up by the garden centre) - so will probably see you around when out with the dogs. May do a wander to Stratton woods & Stanton over the weekend. Currently sat in the Bakers with a pint of 3B’s whilst watching and posting this.
Great video Sandy 👍
A few weeks ago I got made redundant so went out on my motorbike to get some fresh air to clear my head and got hit by a car, all on the same day. It was a country lane, and I was fortunately thrown clear from the bike across into the hedges. I can actually remember laying on the ground thinking today hasn’t gone as planned, but laying there staring up at the sky, without having anything else to do but wait for the ambulance, I got to thinking that this must be what wild camping feels like. Aside from being a bit battered, It was actually quite comfy laying on soft ground, and all wrapped up. When I can afford a new bike I might even bust open the tent I bought 7 years ago and never used, and take it on a wild camp. You are so inspirational Sandy, thanks for all your wonderful uploads. It keeps us all going when the chips are down. Very much appreciated. Rich.
WOW glad you are uninjured Rich, Yes get back on a bike when you feel ready and even better if you get a tent too
Nowt like the sound of rain on a tent when warm ,no leaks, well fed,and the right company..until that got to pee moment!!!
Enjoyed the video you're certainly not put off by the colder weather. Your setup with the fire is brilliant and the candle lantern does give off a really nice cosy glow. Thanks for sharing your outdoor adventures with us it's always a pleasure to watch.
Thanks David, I did enjoy this camp despite the cold weather
Nice work Sandy
Got some fancy gaffs round your way mate !
Top video & excellent knife maker :-)
Nice outing. Have fun stay safe.
Love it ..Good video.. I'm out in my Pomoly Hex Plus and Outbacker box stove, fishing chair, my old military issue Arctic bag and self inflating kip mat.... for March...raising funds and awareness for homeless veterans through the RBLI Tommy Club, Great Tommy Sleep out, have done a couple of nights under the DD tarp and getting the Hammock put next week.
Thanks for sharing, lovecwatching your adventures👌👍🙏🥂
Hi Simon, Goodluck with raising some funds. The Pomoly shelter and Outbacker stove should make a good combination
that mash is outstanding
As always Sandy I find your trips enjoyable to watch and relaxing. I like to eat Idahoan potatoes too out in the woods. I throw in various veggies....peas, carrots, onion, broccoli and beef or chicken if I have it but I find it best with chunks of cheese. The best part is that the leftovers are great for breakfast warmed up in a frying pan with lots of butter. To solve the draft around the base of the tent you could sew a couple of small panels around the base that you could put rocks or pieces of wood to hold the bottom down. You certainly would have some air coming into the tent to give good enough ventilation. Love the stove and candle lantern. Thanks and stay well!
I've got a plan to sort the tent Joe, a good friend of mine is going to add a snow skirt to it for me. As for breakfast, yes, Bubble and squeak comes to mind
-11⁰ and a foot and half of snow here in Norway .. You make it look very "Spring'y"
Ah but we have a damp cold, a cold that will chill you to the bone:)
Cannot tell you how much I enjoy your videos ,you bring the outdoors in. For some one who does not get out much thru terminal illness makes a difference.
Always, always a pleasure Sandy, thank you. Nice to hear the Woodpecker just as you were leaving, definitely a sign spring is just around the corner 👍 ATVB from me in deepest Dorset 👍
Thanks Clive:) Yes the ol Head banger was busy in the woods in the morning
It's nice to have the woodland so close to your home Sandy.
It must take a while recording with so many setups
Thanks for sharing!
It's time consuming making the video's Michael but I do enjoy it
And off he goes, venturing on his trusty stead. Loved it sandy
Thanks Darren. You me and Scott should have a get together at some point this year
@@WiltshireMan would love that. Scott needs to get out of his garage 😅
@@funkyprepper Maybe we could all join you for a Welsh adventure in some of those lovely deep forests. Just name the time and place:)
Good to see another camp video. Here in Melbourne today we are having a very unpleasant 37c day.
Your moving into Autumn now Harold, today feels like the first day of Spring, the birds are singing and it's damp and mild 9c
I thought those woods looked different before you mentioned it. Another great overnighter, Sandy. Always a pleasure to tag along👍
Yes, quite a different feel to them, Nature will soon reclaim the mark of man :)
great vid again andy how is mandy lovely to see them dogs make a fuss of you
Thanks, Sandy. Pretty nice meal. 😋👍🙂
It was Brian, I enjoyed that:)
Lovely video Sandy, thank you. Looking forward to getting out camping.
If my feet get cold, it takes a very long time for me to stop shivering! If my feet are cold then I am cold!
I love a good fire, and the stove is fantastic, especially as it is another way to cook, too!!!
It's a shame the airflow gaps are taking away the heat 😢
The Spring Equinox or Vernal Equinox, is next week, Monday 20th March 2023 at 0924pm, where the dark and the light is equal.
See you on the next one 👋
Yes it can be unpleasant having cold feet but luckily I managed to warm mine up next to the wood stove
I very much enjoyed the video. I looked like a grand time no matter what the weather was. Have a great one and I will see you on the next adventure.
Dwayne
Thankyou Dwayne
Quality, as always Sandy. Love these uploads🥰
Thankyou Horace, It's nice to get out into nature even when it's cold:)
Great video sandy really enjoyed watching that 👌 such peace and solitude and there’s nothing like cooking and eating in the outdoors 😋 and wat a welcome home from the pooches ✊
Amazing....
I’m a big fan of this tent. Breezy yes but putting snow on the sides subsides this when the whites stuff falls. I’ve added a snow skirt which makes it work very well.
I really enjoyed this thank you
Great video . The bird you referred to singing a two note song is a great tit . After that a Robin the the dominant bird with a repetitive set of phraases is a song thrush . As you are putting away the candle holder there’s a short waffle call like laughter - that’s a green woodpecker
Yes I knew the woodpecker but my hearing isn't so great these days Rob, I often don't hear the birdsong clearly until I come home and edit it and amplify it a bit
Brilliant video Sandy, like a Wiltshire version of Patrick Dickinson. (I actually found you because of your commenting on Pat's videos and checked your channel out, glad I did, to see a collab of you two would be something special!) Liked and Subbed 👍
And Wiltshire has beautiful Countryside, very similar to Cheshire, (where I'm from) and I've a soft spot for Avebury, been there many times, and have a few friends in Marlborough.
Take care
All the best
Dave (and Buddy the doggo)
That feast you prepared with the salmon and mash was incredibly visually appealing in addition to the rest of your video which was great!
Always enjoy your videos, Sandy. And if you give an opinion on something, it is always honest. Thanks for taking us along, stay safe and warm.
Thanks KB
Loved it..
Lovely relaxing vid Sandy. Always watch your content, and what a fantastic welcome home waiting for you. As somebody once said 'try locking your wife and your dog in the boot of your car on a freezing cold night, and in the morning when you let them out, see which one gives you the best welcome'.
Fab video as always thanks for sharing your quality adventures
Always appreciate how you go through the bother to take us along with you.
Another super video Sandy; just a quick question what’s the tent and the inner please? 😊
I know what you mean, mate, about the springtime coming back I can't wait to see the woodland come back to life ...
Soon be Spring Dan, make the most of the cold weather:)
@@WiltshireMan watch it at 5
Love the candle lantern 😻
I can't say why but that was one of your really good 'uns. 🙂
Haa Thanks Richard, I actually quite enjoyed this camp apart from the cold draught, but then if it wasn't for the cold draught how would I appreciate the warmth:)
Wonderful
You’re a brave man being out there in that cold damp weather. To get some of the video takes extra energy so it’s appreciated . Just wondering, how come the majority of your tents don’t have a floor to them, why is that, wouldn’t it be warmer and cozier. Thanks for sharing. Tony.
Hi Tony, Yes I would love a floor but most of my tents are budget cheap things and don't have floors
Another relaxing watch as always. Thanks for taking us along with you. Since discovering your channel a couple of years back I've been much more inspired to get back out on a few wild camps myself. Now my son has taken an interest too I think it's a good idea to find a permission, do you have any advice on approaching landowners?
Really great video! I find these very relaxing to watch. I also saw you in Charlie's Royal Enfield meet up at the airport.
I didn't film that Bill but will be doing some motorbike videos very soon
Good video I would consider getting a portable diesel heater for camping
Great Video Sandy; I feel a bit sad for the track cut through your permission woodland, We need to preserve wild woodlands. It Reminds Me of the Dire Straits Song, Telegraph Road.
I remember that song too. The track was only put in to remove some fallen tree's, I doubt it is going to be permanent
Very interesting thanks!
Hello old friend , superb to see out the bike on a local camp trip. Always amazed by your seemingly endless collection of ilumination devices. Brilliant that you can fit such a comprehensive setup on bike. ATVB2U Sandy, Scott Somerset
Thanks Scott. Yes I do like my Illuminators:)
Great Video, I was in that same wood last week, the owner is a very good friend of mine. I was in a hammock though and wish i had a wood stove. Great stuff.
Hi, Karen/ Shane, I've been camping in these woods for years now, I didn't know of anyone else that camped there, I couldn't see any sign so you must have practiced Leave no trace too. The owner is James, just checking to see if that's the same person you know?
Yes thats him, known him for about 20 years, we rent a house in SM from him, ive only been there a few times, yes i practice LNT he did say you used the wood. He bought me one of your neck knives for my 40th a few years ago, its still going strong.
@@karenshane3976 Ah Yes I remember James asking me if I could build a knife for one of his friends .Glad you are enjoying the knife and also the woodland :)
@@karenshane3976 Just spoken to Lorraine L who lives up the road from you at the Bungalow, she has a pony called Finbar. I've looked after him recently and I believe Karen was working opposite shifts in the evenings when Lorraine went to Scotland. It's a small world:)
@@WiltshireMan yes it is. I will be up the wood for a night in the first week of April practiciing a bit of bushcraft, i have a couple of ribeyes in the freezer if your interested
Always love your videos, just such a lovely chilled woodland camp. I see you do the same as I do when you return home..greet the dogs first before the wife😂, case of who shouts loudest me thinks. 😉
Thanks for taking us along, W.M. and yes, ‘urry up Spring.
Thanks Barry, won't be too much longer now til Spring
Nice one, WM. I’m going camping first week of April. Hope I’m going to be warm enough!
Awesome camp mate, your an inspiration to me, if you can go camping so can I😀 And I will after healing a bit more from my knee surgery. I’m 61and a bit over weight, but must get back out there. Cheers from Oklahoma.
Yes, You can do it, get out there as soon as your knee is fixed
Thank you sAndy
Well done Sandy, i admire your attention to detail..raking the leaves to leave no trace. Keep the videos coming, we love them , cheers Jon
Thanks Jon I always do that:)
Always a pleasure watching you and sharing in your videos!
Thankyou for watching
Really enjoyed this one buddy, that stove is some job might consider that for my own adventures. Congrats on the gear haul on the bike too, even at 6 miles you’ve a good bit of gear!
Thankyou:) The stove was a budget one but it has lasted well, I think they have since upgraded how the stove pipe fits on
Always admire you for getting out In whatever season. It seems to have been a long winter 🥶 so I’ll be pleased to see spring coming in. As always a lovely camp out
Yes Andy it does feel like a long cold Winter. Just been out for the morning dog walk and it feels like Spring is happening right now. The brids are singing, the early plants are putting on lots of growth, we are moving into a lovely New Spring right now:)
@@WiltshireMan I’m spending the day with a blacksmith today to try my hand at it. Hopefully it will be warm by the furnace
Another enjoyable camp bro, hope your summer turns out better than our wet one and we are still getting rain it poured down last night. Was hoping with the wind going back to the default west last month we would get back to normal , well still getting rain. Safe travels.
Thanks Ken, It's starting to feel like Spring over here. It's been a long cold and damp Winter
Well done Sandy a great adventure 👍👍
It was a lovely camp in the draughty woodland Jame, just had to be done. It's Spring tomorrow:)
Always a good day when one of your vids pops up Sandy. Thanks fir taking us along mate. AtB Coops 👍🏻🚴
Your welcome Coops, It's always nice to spend time inda woods:)
This showed up on my feed. I’m a 50+ yo just looking at getting into bikepacking in the southern US. Seeing you do what I dream of is an inspiration and gives me confidence that I can also do it myself solo. 🙏
Give it a go, you have nothing to lose
@@WiltshireMan except my pride and my back. 😂
The cold hard camps make the nicest camps twice as sweet. We had false spring here too. Went from best weather of the year to cold and grey.. Hoping it swings back the other way. Good things to come if we watch and wait.
Thats my thought too Jim, If every camp was warm anmd dry we would soon grow tired of that, it's nice to have some variety:)
Really entertaining video Sandy. How do you go about finding a private camping site? Thank you Sandy and Stay Safe.
Alway's enjoy your wid camping vlogs!
Another inspiring overnight Sandy. Keep them coming please. I use the verbal equinox as my signal to start cycle camping for another Spring, so plan to get out next week. Useful looking tent, but my old bones couldn't cope with those draughts. Cheers from Spain.
I guess it is somewhat warmer during the Winter where you are Bill, over here in the UK this Winter has been a long, damp and cold one
Really good to see you out in the woods for a camp again mate. Love the video, always keeps me entertained, and I can enjoy the relax with you, so cheers for that Sandy. Still my turn this weekend after madness of the week I'm hitting the wood for a couple of nights myself. Keep up the good work Sandy, love all the videos bud.
Regards to one and all in the house of the Wiltshire Man.
Moose.
Have a lovely camp in the woods Moose, there is nothing to beat it, I hope you get some warmer weather than I did though:)
What a beautiful looking candle lantern! Looked like a lovely night away Sandy - your stove and tent worked a treat and great that you could carry them on your bike 😎Fab that you have such fine places to escape to so close to home!! 😉
I love that candle lantern Miriam, safe to transport on a bike but they aren't cheap! I'm lucky to have a camping permission close to home
Yay!!! One of my fav you toobers in another video sneaking off for a while!! X
I'd rather be a "Toober" than a "Tuba" :)
I'm surprised you camped by the track... I would venture a bit deeper into the trrees to hide myself a bit.
Been meaning to try the idaho mash sandy , I've seen it in so many tube videos 👌 thankyou for taking us along , As Scott says the camera work alone is a chore in itself 🙌 my pleasure to give you a 👍,s Up 👏 A PROPER JOB as the bottle states 🍻👍
Haa yes I did have a Proper job and it went down well. As for the mash it was so nice I actually emailed them to tell them how much I enjoyed it. It's not too expensive either:)
