The Kingfisher's are one of the most interesting of birds, and one truely amazing fact is that several of the species have changed over time and now have nothing at all to do with water or fish!. Each time I watch, I learn a bit, see things and find you to be such an intelligent and interesting person. I see your new post and I know I will be at peace, watching. I've been smitten for a while now, but my advanced years allows me to have these harmless feelings. You certainly bring peace and joy to many every Friday. Be well and safe travels to you both....who's a good boy....Zephyr is.
My Dad (a naval aviator who flew jets very very low level in the 50s&60s) before he passed said I'm back for us, whenever you see a Kingfisher - So wonderful to see you've seen the kingfishers (and the bats!) - early summer there were none, but since travelling up the Aylesbury Arm from Sept to Braunston this eve, I've been blessed almost every day. Thankyou Vanessa

A Bat detector !!!, you kept that quiet , I was getting worried when you started whispering under the bridge … full of surprises you are young lady … take care ❤
Love, love, love when the teacher in you teaches us some wonderful history as you travel! Thank you for that, always a treat with your lovely prose and drawing at the end while you sip your tea and eat your biscuits!
Lovely kingfisher. It's not easy to photograph those birds, or the bat's, come to that. Beautiful, gentle little story. Thanks so much for taking us with you. Look after yourself x
Those tunnels look really snug and I'm surprised you don't scratch your boat, particularly within the twisty tunnels. It doesn't look like you have enough room to hang out your fenders/bumpers to protect your boat, but fortunately you have wonderful boating skills to make it through them unscathed! Meanwhile I enjoyed the gorgeous bridges you saw--architectural wonders! Amazing how you're able to listen to the family of bats beneath that bridge with your bat detector! 🦇🦇🦇 I was feeling bluesy and lonely today, but your blog cheered me up. Thanks Vanessa for your cheery personality, playful Zephyr, and wonderful drawings and poetry. Jenny ❤
Jenny, I hope you are ok? You need to treat yourself this week to something that will make you feel better like a nice hot chocolate or a good book or some arty gift. We all need to treat ourselves every now and again. Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
@@themindfulnarrowboat Thanks Vanessa, I appreciate your concern. I chatted with a friend who cheered me up. It's nothing major going on, save for local politics, and worldwide news. Hopefully Harris & Walz will win! 💙 in a few weeks.
The look on your face when you heard the first bats is priceless!! Hearing them and seeing them dive and flit is wonderful. And, I always enjoy the sound of you pouring your tea at the end. It's the personification of cosy. Thanks for another magical journey Vanessa. Happy trails and adventures and keep safe til next time. W xxxx
Hi Wendy, thank you so much for such a lovely comment. I was so excited to hear the bats that I missed them flying behind me for the first few minutes! 😂 Have a super weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
Scary tunnels ,rare insect species, beautiful flowers, mysterious bat colony, a beautiful journey today and ends with lovely art ,poetry and of course tea and biscuits. Peaceful now 😊😊☺☺....
Such joy hearing those bats and Alice Grace is even more beautiful in the glow of candlelight. Yay for snuggly blankets, winter duvets, books and a hot cup of tea xxx
A warm hug to my favorite hostess, until she discovers where she buried her gloves. Now, back to my front row seat in the enchanted narrow boat classroom. ❤
Once again, an astonishingly beautiful video of your travels on your Narrowboat. Truly amazing experience, video, commentary and artistic journaling. We are all there with you.
I had to laugh at 17.07 - Zeph's tail wagging so fast as she entered the bookshop - thump! thump! thump! against the wall - so funny to see her so excited! Perhaps she thought it was a sausage shop! Good old Zeph will come in handy as the nights grow colder. Did you know that a dog's body temperature is 5 degrees warmer than ours? Let her sleep on your bed and keep you warm and snug - she'll be like a hairy hot water bottle!
Zephyr’s tail made me laugh too! 😂😂😂🐾🐾🤭 I didn’t know that a dogs body temperature has a difference of 5 degrees! 🤩 I read that letting your dog sleep in your bed is very good for lowering stress levels though. Thank you so much for watching. Have a super rest of the weekend. Take care 🌻🦋
That Silver Jubilee Bridge has a "Sydney Harbour Bridge" look about it. I love how excited you get for the nature around you. It's infectious, and I hope it runs off onto many people who watch your vlog. Blessings from Australia 🇦🇺.
Im In western North Carolina (WNC). My little home, And this town, was spared,. we were in the eye of the storm (in human terms). I came to your channel to get a bit of a respite. I find it serendipitous that you show landslides from the past… not the same scope of things, but the same in terms of effecting humans and daily life. Time does heal, but not without people helping people. It comes down to basic needs of a roof (whatever form that might take at the moment) over your head, warm clothes, a warm bed, fire, water and a nutritious meal. Most of all, love and compassionate caring. The world always needs this in times of crisis, wherever it might be. It seems it is unending; taking turns across the world. At the moment, it’s in Appalachia, and The Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. Of course, there’s more… for me, it really hits home because it’s cold and damp and winter is on its heels. Anyway, im rambling… but then again, that’s why I came to your channel. It’s like catching up with an old friend. 😊 thank you for sharing your life. What else is there? We are all here to take care of each other, in whatever capacity that might be at the moment.
I’m so pleased that you are ok? I was thinking about you all when I heard about the hurricane. How frightening to have to sit and wait for something like that. Thank you for watching. Take care 🦋🌻

Another wonderful vlog. Just as I was thinking that the music sounds French you came out with the French phrase. Your excitement as you heard the bat sounds made me giggle. Never change Vanessa, you are lovely, as is Zeph with her wagging tail and smiling face when she was given sausages. Your kingfisher shots were spectacular, well actually the whole vlog was. What a an amazing journey you took us on this week. Thank you for entertaining us and teaching us new things every week. Take care all of you. xxxx

Just the job to watch today surrounded as I am by a thick, hoary white frost, so thick it looks like snow. I have hoinked out my sheepskin slippers as I need every bit of warmth I can get. It is very cold, a warm cosy narrowboat looks just the job.
I love your pottery dishes and cups as well as your boat’s light and clean interior. Journaling is also my passion, but alas I do not have your ability to draw beautiful illustrations.
Dear Vanessa, Sorry to not be one of the "Coffee Buyers." I'm saving up to buy your 2024 Journal when it comes out to add to my collection of 2022 and 2023. Can't wait! The perfect watch for a Friday evening. The look on your face Vanessa, when you detected a bat. Priceless 🥰 Thank you for sharing your love of nature 💚xx
🌻 I too, am getting ready for winter while enjoying the beautiful fall colors. Firstly, making sure the generator has a full tank and batteries are refreshed. Wood is stacked. Pantry shelves are stocked with home canned goods. Blankets washed, coats and sweaters into main closet, spare heaters gathered from the basement. The most fun things , however, my winter bookcase is being filled with old favorites, holiday selections and new books with adventures awaiting and my library card renewed! Pens and pencils, notebooks are at the ready. Chocolate and teas bought. I will be watching your fall and winter travels with the feeling of visiting a dear friend. How cozy you keep your narrow boat home and how expressive and lovely your illustrated journaling is. Thank you for giving me moments of joy and interesting things to see and learn and to look forward to this fall and winter🤗

So delighted to have found your channel, via the good ol' RUclips algorithm. I've watched about six of your videos in a row, subscribed and ordered your last year's journal. A few weeks ago I started donating to the Canal & River Trust and love reading about our canals and pathways. I felt as if I were there. I live in my 88ft Narrowhouse; floating on the earth here in Mount Shasta. So while I watch events in this "log", I imagine my home also floating on the waters where many of my ancestors lived. Winter is indeed coming.
15:55 your images of the bridge reminded me of a painting I love by Grace Cossington Smith called, The Bridge in Curve (1930). It’s of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which looks very similar.
With all those Tunnels and Bridges and Stags and looking up an old friend Caterpillar this episode had a lot to smile about. So it's getting cold in England already Vanessa ? Keep that Tea Caddy full as we cannot survive without Tea. The look on your face standing in the near dark listening and picking up Bat signals on your device without any fear of vampires in sight. You look so shy and sweet when you take your Tea and Biscuits to your table to start on your poetic Artwork. Keep the fire burning Young Lady .

Beautiful blog winter is a challenge being full time mohomer also, but warm clothes hot toddy at night & like you ever changing nature make you realise what life is about🙏🙏
19:29 Wow brilliant Vanessa, lovely seeing your face light up ❤ reminded me that years ago I fancied having a go at designing a bat converter but never got around to it… I have some special transducers laying up in my component racks waiting to be used. if anyone is interested, because bats produce very high frequency sounds that are way above the unman hearing range. Young people can hear up to around 20, 000 cycles per second or in more modern terms 20,000 Hertz (20kHz). Bat communications as Vanessa here mentioned, the frequencies are up to 80 kilo Hertz. By mixing the detected bat sounds received by the transducer which is a form of high frequency microphone, by another frequency close to the bat sound frequency we can hear the difference as long as that difference is less than 20kHz… It’s very similar how a traditional radio receiver works. sorry got my anorak head on there . 😂😂😂😂😂
the happy eyes and smiles of a little one, with that mischief , you are special. I enjoy this each week. the colors of fall, makes you want to walk along the canal. good work . good art. goahead and eat 3 bisucits.
I put a bat house in my yard - near the lake. It's fascinating to watch them 'flow' out, in the evening, as if by command. Yes, fall is the time to break out the down comforter and wool socks!
Hooe you manage to find your winter gear, it's definitely cold in the mornings now. Snuggle up with dog and fire. Beautiful to see the bat's and kingfisher. Another wonderful vlog, thank you
Hello again! So goodbye to the Trent and Mersey. What a beautiful canal it was. Looking forward to see what's ahaead. About your spending more time inside Alice Grace...not the worst fate in the world, by any means. You've done a great job making it very cozy. And you have Zephyr! What a wonderful companion she is. Dear Vanessa and Zeph When you mentioned the Sneeze Wort I had to ask uncle google about it as it might be a good addition to the garden. Even though I am on the other side of the world and a much colder climate the Sneeze Wort will work. Currently we have several wild plants mixed in with the "domestic" perennials which makes for an interesting combination. In the spring there will be the addition of Fire Weed and a couple of other plants to fill in holes. This year the garden exploded and reminded me very much of a British garden. By the way I always look forward to the end of your vlogs to see what scrumptious treats you will place on the plate. I must admit that I to have a sweet tooth. Hugs to both of you and do get yourself some warm gloves and a proper coat. Don't need to hear that you have caught a chill or cold. Mark Alberta, Canada

Thank you so much 😊 Have a wonderful weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
Those bats were amazing. I could sit there for hrs with the gizmo watching/hearing them. Enchanting vlog as always.
I feel exactly the same about the bats. Thank you so much for watching. Have a super weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
@@themindfulnarrowboat I walked over to Whole Foods and bought myself a mini pumpkin tart, which I enjoyed on the way home. :o)
I’m so pleased that you found it peaceful. Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🌻🦋
Your face when the bat detector went off was priceless!
🙈 I get so excited!😆 Thank you so much for watching. Have a super weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
Such joy hearing those bats and Alice Grace is even more beautiful in the glow of candlelight. Yay for snuggly blankets, winter duvets, books and a hot cup of tea xxx
It’s that cosy time of year isn’t it! Thank you for your lovely comment. Have a wonderful weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
Vanessa you are so knowledgeable about nature and a thoroughly enjoyable watch.😊
I just read a lot about it as I am so interested in it. Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
A warm hug to my favorite hostess, until she discovers where she buried her gloves. Now, back to my front row seat in the enchanted narrow boat classroom. ❤
🤗 Such an adorable comment! Gloves- sadly lost forever so I bought new ones today!🤩 Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
Once again, an astonishingly beautiful video of your travels on your Narrowboat. Truly amazing experience, video, commentary and artistic journaling. We are all there with you.
That’s so kind of you. Thank you for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
My favorite time of Friday! Thank you! ❤
Thank you ☺️ Have a wonderful weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
Beautiful sad eyes on zephyr she's a loving dog
She is so loving and I feel really lucky to have her. Thank you for watching. Take care 🌻🦋
Thank you for taking us on this adventure with you. And your artwork.
Thank you so much for watching. Have a super weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
That Silver Jubilee Bridge has a "Sydney Harbour Bridge" look about it.
I love how excited you get for the nature around you. It's infectious, and I hope it runs off onto many people who watch your vlog. Blessings from Australia 🇦🇺.
It does look at bit Sydney Harbour doesn’t it! Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
Autumn a wonderful time of the year warm fire hot coffee and a good book.
Isn’t it!🤗🥰 Have a wonderful weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
You are very brave. “You can’t always see the light at the end of the tunnel…” 🥰
I’m so pleased that you are ok? I was thinking about you all when I heard about the hurricane. How frightening to have to sit and wait for something like that. Thank you for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
At about 6:13 there’s that moment where a duck suddenly appears from underwater to the right of your approaching boat. Very cool.
I’m pleased that you spotted that. It was a cormorant that had been following the boat so when it popped up as I filmed, I was chuffed to bits! Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
Take care all of you. xxxx
Zephyr’s tail was so funny wasn’t it! I didn’t realise until I started editing how loud it was 😂😂🐾🐾🤗 Thank you so much for such a kind comment, Shirley. Have a super rest of the weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
Just the job to watch today surrounded as I am by a thick, hoary white frost, so thick it looks like snow. I have hoinked out my sheepskin slippers as I need every bit of warmth I can get. It is very cold, a warm cosy narrowboat looks just the job.
Stay warm! It sounds beautiful though. Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
Such a delight to watch your videos. Calming and beautiful. Your journals are sooooo amazingly beautiful.
That is so kind of you. Thank you so much 😊 Take care 🦋🌻
I love your pottery dishes and cups as well as your boat’s light and clean interior. Journaling is also my passion, but alas I do not have your ability to draw beautiful illustrations.
Journaling is so relaxing isn’t it? Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment too. Take care 🦋🌻
Dear Vanessa, Sorry to not be one of the "Coffee Buyers." I'm saving up to buy your 2024 Journal when it comes out to add to my collection of 2022 and 2023. Can't wait! They sit on my desk and provide just the right peaceful interlude when I am working! Don't stop journaling and I'll keep on collecting them.
Please don’t apologise for not buying me a coffee; I am just happy to have you watch and enjoy the vlogs. I’m so grateful to you for buying journals and I’m so pleased that you like them. Thank you so much. 😊 Have a super weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
The perfect watch for a Friday evening. The look on your face Vanessa, when you detected a bat. Priceless 🥰
Thank you for sharing your love of nature 💚xx
It is so exciting to find bats!🦇🤩 Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment. Take care 🦋🌻

Another beautiful vlog, your photography is stunning and the close up of the kingfisher was lovely as was your joy at hearing the bats! It’s definitely time to start hunkering down for winter!

Hope you find your cold weather gear before the cold weather hits you. Hit here last two nights. Every week in your finale it’s lovely to see your illustrations and also what kind of biscuits you are having. 🍪🍪

Definitely needed your peace and tranquility this week. Thank you very much dears.
I hope you are okay? I’m so pleased that you found the vlog relaxing. Thank you so much for watching. Have a super weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
@@themindfulnarrowboat No worries, we're fine thank you. Alas, we could do with a bit more of the "peace and tranquility". Be well, take care and have a lovely week/end :)
You must have nerves of steel and a very steady hand to get through such a narrow and winding tunnel the way you did! Nice job!
I’m getting braver every year, but I was a bag of nerves at the beginning. Thank you for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
You did a great job of capturing the "cozy" aspect of fall. As usual, the poem was the best part.
That is so kind of you 😊 Thank you so much for watching. Have a super weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
I appreciate that your videos always highlight the beauty of the diversity of the seasons. This videos beautiful thumbnail, brings to mind Emily Dickinson’s “For Every Bird A Nest”. Thank you for another great video.

So delighted to have found your channel, via the good ol' RUclips algorithm. I've watched about six of your videos in a row, subscribed and ordered your last year's journal. A few weeks ago I started donating to the Canal & River Trust and love reading about our canals and pathways. I hope to walk on a few towpaths in my future (I'm a pensioner!) but have never been on a houseboat so your channel is an excellent insight - and I'm right there with you, from my sofa! Thank you!
What a kind person you are to start donating to the Canal and River Trust. We would be lost without our canals. Thank you so much for such a lovely comment and for buying my book too. Take care 🦋🌻
I'm binge watching!!!, needs to be on TV it's SOOO good!, actually, probably TOO Good!!, you are making me all warm and fuzzy for the winter months ahead. Lovely, talented lady and her beautiful dog!!, carry on being the perfect river dweller! x

You have my total respect for living onboard at such a young age! Brilliant 🤩 You are so right about the feeling of hibernation too. Thank you so much for watching. Have a super week. Take care 🌻🦋
@@themindfulnarrowboatSorry I phrased that wrong. I've been living on board for 19 years. I'm 62! 🤷♂️ oh how I wish I was 19 😂😂
I felt as if I were there. I live in my 88ft Narrowhouse; floating on the earth here in Mount Shasta. So while I watch events in this "log", I imagine my home also floating on the waters where many of my ancestors lived. Winter is indeed coming.
It sounds beautiful where you are? I bet your boat house is wonderful! Thank you so much for watching. Have a super weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
After seeing one or two of your videos I must say what a talent you have for making film.
That’s so kind of you- thank you so much 😊 Have a super week. Take care 🦋🌻
15:55 your images of the bridge reminded me of a painting I love by Grace Cossington Smith called, The Bridge in Curve (1930).
It’s of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which looks very similar.
I will have to look that painting up- it sounds wonderful. Thank you so much for watching. Have a super rest of the weekend. Take care 🌻🦋
With all those Tunnels and Bridges and Stags and looking up an old friend Caterpillar this episode had a lot to smile about.
So it's getting cold in England already Vanessa ? Keep that Tea Caddy full as we cannot survive without Tea.

19:29 Wow brilliant Vanessa, lovely seeing your face light up ❤
reminded me that years ago I fancied having a go at designing a bat converter but never got around to it… I have some special transducers laying up in my component racks waiting to be used.
if anyone is interested, because bats produce very high frequency sounds that are way above the unman hearing range. Young people can hear up to around 20, 000 cycles per second or in more modern terms 20,000 Hertz (20kHz). Bat communications as Vanessa here mentioned, the frequencies are up to 80 kilo Hertz. By mixing the detected bat sounds received by the transducer which is a form of high frequency microphone, by another frequency close to the bat sound frequency we can hear the difference as long as that difference is less than 20kHz…
It’s very similar how a traditional radio receiver works.
sorry got my anorak head on there . 😂😂😂😂😂
Anorak Head 😊😊😊
Oh my goodness! It sounds genius and way over my head. 😂 🌻🦋
the happy eyes and smiles of a little one, with that mischief , you are special. I enjoy this each week. the colors of fall, makes you want to walk along the canal. good work . good art. goahead and eat 3 bisucits.

Did you ever turn up "Jack Hargreaves Country broadcasts" as they are so much of your "Ilk" but on a horse and cart not a narrow boat. They are available on "RUclips".
I have just started watching them and they are so nostalgic! Thank you for the recommendation. Have a super weekend. Take care 🦋🌻
Dear Vanessa and Zeph
When you mentioned the Sneeze Wort I had to ask uncle google about it as it might be a good addition to the garden.

Well I guessed wrong again I thought you might draw the Kingfisher in your book the bat’s were cool though I just thought in my whole life I have never seen a bat up close and personal they are kind of hard to spot especially at night that bat detector thing you have is kind of cool though. I try and guess the number of biscuits you have with your tea not very good at that either. I watched “The Magic Garden” again last night if you have not seen it which I think you have it’s a really good movie. Thanks for letting me spend a part of Friday with you and Zeph. Have a great week see you next time Steve
