Bobby was just 24 years old when this was was performed. He was a counter-tenor, which is the rarest male voice, who can sing as high as a soprano or mezzo-soprano. He doesn’t change from his chest voice to a falsetto, he is able to run up and down the scales easily. He doesn’t have to strain to hit those highs.

A great singer doesn't need to show off, just live inside the song and know when to hold back, and when to burst out, which is what Bobby did, and gave the vocal flourishes at the approproate places, and held back the volume and range for the climax of the song. American Idol and other programs, and singers, need to take note, and understand, excellence is NOT about the singer, it's about the song. Bobby died at age 63 in a hotel room from a heart attack in Kalamazoo MI, just 50 minutes from my house, 20 years ago in fall 2023. While on tour with Bill. That day really shook me, I heard the news on the radio on the way to my music teacher job at school, and I had to pull over for a few minutes and cry. I grew up with this music...

Together with Bill, they were the best duo ever heard. Bobby passed away in 2003, age 63. 8 months after their induction into the RnR Hall of Fame. Bill is still touring with a new partner. He's 82. FYI - the song was originally a song from a 1955 prison movie titled Unchained. It was covered many times before the Righteous Brothers released their iconic cover in 1965. The Righteous Brothers change the original from an introspective song about a prisoner longing for his family to a beautiful love Ballard. Your are right this is the standard by which all other version will be judged. Great reaction, you and your family have a blessed day

21 years ago, I married my husband and my friend who was playing piano, was also the one who had introduced us. We married at my elderly fathers house which helped him mentally since my mother died 1 year earlier. My friend asked what music I wanted played and I let her choose. But I walked down aisle to my husband to Unchained Melody. Everyone was smiling due to the wedding, but once they recognized this song, they smiled wider. I swore I'd never walk to Here Comes The Bride, when I learned in college that it was written as a joke for Midsummer Nights Dream. I felt that was bad luck. So, I chose a song that was out of the box and was mine and my husband's song anyway. Thank you sir for your reaction. May God bless.

Just after the song ends, Bobby flashes a little smile. He knew he had nailed it. Sadly Bobby died in 2003. Bill Medley is still going strong, touring and concerts. He and Jennifer Warnes had a number 1 hit in 1987 with " Time of My Life", from the movie "Dirty Dancing".

I love that the video allows us to see Bobby from head to toe on the stage. Notice how you can actually point to the part of his body the notes seem to come from: sometimes it’s the lower throat/neck, sometimes the shoulders, while the top notes literally sound from just under his hairline! - and the lower notes have a resonance that make them sound as if his chest/tummy are involved as well. Bobby had great vocal technique, excellent breath control and a steady sense of rythm, as well as excellent diction: note how he snaps the hard consonants b, d, g, t, p etc. to give snap and lilt to the vocal line. This is masterful.

This song will be around for centuries as people can relate to it and how he puts emotions into the words
He manages to transcends the emotions into the words to evoke them out of the public
To top it of apparently he had a bad cold and when you hear him talking struggling to breath
But he's parents traveled there for the first time seeing their son sing and he wasn't going to let them down
By singing it that night he had to change how he sung it due to the cold and it was better and then sang it like that every time after that night is from what others had written over time
    cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

No, the changes from the studio recording were because he liked the acoustics of the theater. He took advantage of them working with the orchestra conductor and arranger. As far as the cold, it was the end stage of it, according to Bill Medley. The shortness of breath was likely a combination of remnants of the cold and really bad nervousness which was not unusual for him. It seems when he would begin to sing the nervousness would vanish. Edit: not to be picky (but I guess I am), Anaheim, where his family lived and Burbank aren't that distant from each other. It's not even a 40 minute drive. From what you said people could think they traveled a great distance.

This beautiful melody was written by award winning music composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret for the 1955 Prison movie "Unchained."
Ten years later in 1965 on the "Andy Williams Show." Bobby Hatfield of the "Righteous Brothers" in collaboration with the "NBC Studio Orchestra." Gave a (Live) television performance of "Unchained Melody" that was one for the ages. Together they performed the greatest (live) television performance ever!
The orchestra's string section was off the charts enchantingly beautiful. It was epic...Note: When Bobby Hatfield finished singing 'Unchained Melody.' Andy Williams said it best...Beautiful!

Elvis did an incredible version of this song. You should react to the live version he did at his next to last concert. It's even more emotional when you think just 6 short weeks later he was gone 😪

When the song was first released in 1955 when the movie “Unchained” came out - 3 different singers/acts charted with it.
But Bobby made some changes to it and made it his own…perfection!
