- Hey everyone, welcome back to my channel! Today, I'm diving into the wonderful world of classic music with a timeless gem - "We've Only Just Begun" by the Carpenters. I can't tell you how excited I am to listen to this iconic song, so let's get right into it!
Karen Carpenter is the only female vocalist whose voice can literally bring me to tears. She's completely in a class all her own. Her personality is beyond compare. It took myself 50 years to realise I missed the boat. She is Only 20 years old here. Welcome to the Karen Carpenter fan club and what a great reaction.
I agree. I still get goosebumps at her voice and I’ve been listening at least 50 years.
Me Too,The Best voice ever.
agree, since I was a little boy and now all these decades later...
Yea she tears me up also always has
Honestly, she had the most beautiful voice I've ever heard in my life.
Best female vocalist of all time. I idolized her as a teen. Voice of an angel.
I grew up with the Carpenters' music. Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "Superstar", "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)", "I Need To Be In Love" & so many more.
Agree 150%
And how about “close to you”? Will always be my favorite. Bothers me still the way she died.
Dionne Warwick said her voice is like satin!
When she died, her brother Richard said "The world has lost the voice of an angel, but I lost my best friend"
I get chills when I hear her voice. She is definitely an angel.
Karen the GOAT!! Simply effortless. They called her One Take Karen. She is an angel now, unfortunately. RIP Karen ❤❤❤
Ms. Carpenter's voice was outstanding, it wasn't one in a million, it's one in a lifetime!
two lifetimes..

Tom, you got that right!
It’s no exaggeration at all, to include Karen Carpenter among the greatest vocalists of the 20th Century. Her tragic passing at the age of 32 brings tears to this day. ❤
RIP Karen. She was an angel on earth. Miss her since her tragic death from Anorexia. So sad. ♥️🙏
No one could have sung this except her. This was a song written by Paul Williams for a bank advert, I think. Richard Carpenter, envisioning an arrangement and how it would sound with Karen’s voice behind it, immediately got in touch with Paul Williams and said, “Please! Please! Tell me this is an entire song!!” It was and became one of the most beloved and popular wedding songs of all time.
Paul Williams wrote the lyrics Roger Nichols wrote the melody
Paul Williams and Roger Nichols wrote this classic.
Richard Carpenter was a genius producer. Loved their beautiful music, it still gives me goosebumps.
Yes give Richard credit for knowing how to do the arrangement that makes this song snd all of their songs unforgettable!!
It actually wasn't an entire song - he said yes and then wrote the rest.
This was everyone's wedding song for a decade
When I was young in the 70's & 80's, this song must have been played at 80% of the weddings I attended. Karen truly was a gift to us all. There's so little emphasis on beauty in music in this day & age. Carpenters are like a breath of sweet mountain air. Loved your reaction.
Anything Karen Carpenter sang was gold. She was just that good. You will enjoy going down this rabbit hole.
You're right. She had an incredible voice!! Could listen to her all day. Her main passion was playing the drums, but her brother (singing with her and playing the piano, as well as doing most of the arranging of their songs). after much coaxing, talked her into singing. She does play the drums and sing on a couple of their songs. Enjoy your reactions.
The Carpenters had many hits and you can have a lot of enjoyment going through their catalog. Karen had one of those voices that hits us deep inside.
Karen always considered herself a drummer who sings.
This will be an awesome journey😊
And considered one of the best drummer out there at the time. People fail to remember this because of her voice and monsterous arrangements. Just like many guitarists would tell you Glen Campbell was considered among them at the time as one of the best. He just was so handsome and such a great singer nobody paid attention to his skill in that area.
They were an incredibly huge band and she will always have legendary status.
Such a beautiful voice, musical talent and person.
An angel voice hid dark internal demons that took her life at such a young age.
That's what makes this song haunting in a way.
Her Mother is to blame....
@@michaelasay8587 I agree since her mother favored Richard over her. What I also wonder (I have not seen anyone say this) how much Richard shares in the blame- not in an intentional or malicious way, but his ambition to get her as the front singer from the group, drive to produce so much music, touring, etc that it took an emotional toll on her.
"superstar", "for all we know", "bless the beasts and the children", "solitaire", "merry christmas darling", "close to you", "only yesterday", "yesterday once more", "hurting each other", "make believe it's your first time", "Now", the list goes on and on...
What about my favorite "I won't last a day without you"?
yes, that too of course!...@@davidsheriff9274
Pure. Clear. Perfection! Such a beautiful voice. Still missed! 💗
I've listened to and enjoyed music all my life. I have never heard a more perfect voice-- a more pure voice than that of Karen Carpenter. A true voice of an angel. She has left her mark. May she rest in peace.
She had a smooth, silk voice. The greatest female voice of all time.
I agree Allen the greatest female singer there ever was or ever will be
For the holiday season you must listen to her singing Merry Christmas Darling.
Talent like we experienced in the 70s just doesn't seem to exist today. Glad I was there to live it.
She’s an angel and was called back to heaven much too soon!
This song was played at my wedding in 1971!
Bless you
That originally was written for a TV commercial for Crocker Bank in California (which no longer exists). I remember seeing it when I was a kid like around 1970/1971. Then the Carpenters recorded it and it became a hit.
You can actually find the commercial on RUclips...
So many good songs.
Karen's voice, Richard's musical arrangements are brilliant. It is a shame she was only here a short time. Truly, a voice of an angel.
I Won't Last A Day Without You is my favorite.
Superstar
Close To You
Yesterday Once More
Sing
Goodbye To Love
This Masquerade
Top Of The World
Only Yesterday
The only female vocalist with perfect pitch. Richard was the arrangement master with great harmony. You will never hear a better duet.
They've been trying for decades to find someone as wonderful with her type of voice. Can't find that person.
Her type of voice. That person exists. Her name is Tori Holub. She’s as close as you can get without a reincarnation of Karen herself. But, let’s be realistic. There will never be another Karen, so there will never be anyone as wonderful. However, I’m glad that there’s someone with her type of voice. I hope someone will write original music for her in the Carpenter’s style. There’s obviously a demand for it.
The purest most beautiful voice of all time,Karen's an absolute legend and a fabulous drummer too!
I was a young boy when I first heard The Carpenters, and I was amazed and inspired by her voice. Many years later I actually saw her angelic face and learned the tragic story of her eating disorder that cost her (and the world) her life.
I’ve found myself wishing sometimes that I’d been born earlier and could have found her and somehow helped her to love herself as much as the rest of us loved her. But sadly, all we have left are her songs. And those are so beautiful that they make my eyes well with tears when I hear them. The world is a better place because Karen Carpenter sang to us.
Oh you definitely won't regret going down this rabbit hole...I absolutely love the Carpenter's!!
There's at least 50 more that are all gems. Anything Karen sang is wonderful. Try Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, Top Of The World. My personal favorite is Only Yesterday. For some real hidden gems there is I Believe You or One More Time. There is a reason why millions of people consider her the best female vocalist of all time.
"Rainy Days and Mondays" is my favorite Carpenters song.
Bless the Beasts and the Children❣️Please🥹❣️
I had forgotten that song. I loved it.
@@Gary-h6f Yeah, it’s a gem.
Perfection! This song was played at weddings for at least a generation. You're correct her voice was flawless - gift from heaven.
The Carpenter's sold more albums than anyone for about 18 months in the seventies,
This was played for a LOT of weddings when it first came out.
Angelic. I could hear her all day. She is my favorite to listen to during Christmas. Her voice is just so peaceful.
My sister wore my ears out playing this when it first came out. Glad her voice was so good.
Angels have walked the earth.
Best female singer ever and the most perfect voice. She’s also the best Alto!
I agree, her voice is lovely! I'm 65 and was definitely a fan of the Carpenters!❤
I'm 65and have always loved the Carpenters
She was with us such a short time. God must have noticed one of his angel voices was missing and came to get her.
Karen Carpenter was a beautiful lady with a beautiful heart and a beautiful voice whom we lost much too early. Had a massive crush on her, Petula Clark, and Judith Durham of The Seekers back in the day! In future reactions to The Carpenters, you can close your eyes and point to ANY TITLE from their list, and you can rest assured that it will be a WINNER!
I was little when The Carpenters were big. She suffered from Anorexia. When she passed away from it, I was suffering from Anorexia. Unknown to my parents, I was 14 years old, and due to the style at the time, everything being big and baggy, I was able to hide it. When my mother noticed how thin I was it scared her to death, because hearing about it in news when Karen Carpenter passed away, nobody knew what it was. It was a long road, many more pound lost, before I was able to overcome the one thing she couldn't. RIP Karen....beautiful song. Thanks for the reaction.
"Close to You", "Top of the World", "Superstar", "Rainy Days and Mondays", "I Won't Last a Day Without You"
This song was played at many, many weddings in the 70's.
It's amazing how effortlessly she looks when she singing
For those of us that grew up in California, we all heard this sing first as a Crocker Bank commercial that can still be found on RUclips. I was surprised shortly after that to hear the Carpenter’s singing it and turning it into a hit!
Oh yes....the song makes you think and dream.
YEP! Pure, honest, and raw at once . . . her brother is standing & singing next to her! Talent from God!
Superstar is the epitome of their work. She was a gift and I lament her loss even to this day. That voice is simply inimitable.
“Ordinary Fool,” you won’t get often requested but Karen again makes it a masterpiece with that perfect angelic voice. And for different twist Bossa Nova style “This Masquerade,” unbelievable!
Our wedding song 52 years ago. Still going. Must have been the song.
Soundtrack to my early youth in the early70s....such a pure talent,... We were all blessed who lived in her time ,to have had her lift our lives....such innocent times.
It was my honor to see the Carpenters in concert twice, and they were both memorable. The first time, they were fairly new to scene, but massively popular. The second time was just as good, but Karen was already sick. Two suggestions: Listen to her “Song for You”, and pull up the video of Karen on the drums. She is among the best of all performers.
Loñnie what years did you see her? Me in 74...the only good thing my parents did for me and my sister.
Beautiful song. This song was sang at my wedding 46 years ago. Everything by the Carpenters is magic!!
Shw was also amazing on the drums . 😊
Her voice was sublime but perfectly complimented by Richard’s sometimes overlooked flawless arrangements and orchestration.
I can’t believe this was the music of my childhood. Revisiting it now it’s so much more powerful. She needs no processing of her vocals. This is straight up her voice. The arrangements of the songs are so good. I miss this music.
The best female singing voice ever ♥ Such a tragic story of her life, though 😥 Enjoy diving into The Carpenters catalogue, they were a truly talented pair 😊
Such a BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE , I love her and her brother ,grew up with her songs .still wish she was here with us. My family always said she has the voice of an Angel . Thank you
I have listened to The Carpenters for decades and always will. She left us with the gift of her voice but also opening society up to the subject of eating disorders which was desperately needed. I am in awe of them every time I hear their voices. I hope you react to more!
For some reason I’m revisiting the carpenters and seeing a lot of these “first time listening“ videos on RUclips. I’m 75 years old and was lucky enough to see the carpenters in Las Vegas in the late 1970s at which time I had not realized she was also a drummer. I also had not, until then appreciated what a huge contribution Richard Carpenter made to the act, as not only a singer but arranger, producer, and performer. Remember, the Carpenters were able to gain huge success, as we emerged from the late 1960’s at a time, when groups like the doors, Jimi Hendrix, big brother in the holding company, and the Rolling Stones offered raw expressions of rebellion & dissatisfaction. For a short time I worked for a middle of the road radio station as a disc jockey and came to t 5:42 5:42 5:42 appreciate their talent at a time when some labeled their music as a little too sweet and soupy . Listening to their music now a half a century later proves how timeless they are.
“A privilege just to listen to it” indeed. Great reaction.
A voice like no other!!! She was an exceptional drummer as well! Thank you! Great memories!!
The Carpenters' music brings back memories when, in the early 80's, I & the rest of my hometown's queen's court rode on a parade float w/their music going in the background. We always got compliments on the choice of music from other town courts after each parade.❤
She definitely had a unique and beautiful voice, I was a teenager when The Carpenters were popular but as punk boys we never admitted we liked The Carpenters but we knew all the words and since I’m older I definitely appreciate their music so much more
Boy I would put them in my tape player when I was on a date and when we would often park in a secluded spot their music made everything perfect.
When I first heard her sing I thought she had the most beautiful voice I had ever heard and I still think so !! She's my favorite all time singer !! And that will never change !! ✌️&❤
I just sit here and shake my head. My Lord, simply amazing! Could you imagine being a part of a heavenly choir that she is in??? Thanks for sharing!
That verse "before the rising sun, we fly". Check out her beautiful vibrato on "sun" and"fly". Amazing breath/diaphragm control and emotional delivery of the lyrics. She makes you believe she is a newlywed instead of a 20 year old girl from the suburbs living with her parents. Her voice was a gift from God.
Offers us a glimpse of heaven, simply beautiful.
Listen to all of their music. You will not be disappointed. I got to see them in person and she was magic, they both were. If you want a good Christmas song, listen to “Merry Christmas, Darling”.
I remember the Carpenters my favorite songs are only just begun and close to you you're my favorite
Caren Carpenter, her voice isn't from above. It's her. It's her talent. She is incredible. Also, don't leave out the rest of the band. Thery are equally impressive especially her brother Richard.
My older brothers used to listen to the Carpenters in the early '70's and I was just a young boy of 11 years old and these songs were played daily in our home and I remember them well. If am not mistaken, the young blond man standing next to her through most of the song was her brother. The brother/sister duo were very talented. Loved them and still do. Great reaction.
This was the wedding song of the 70's and 80's. It's a beautiful song.
Karen had the, "voice of an angel from God." Check out their Live Performance outdoors, as they perform at Walter Reed Veterans Hospital. She's singing and playing drums. They did sound like their studio recording, when performing live. John Bettis, who co-wrote 36 of their hits said, "When I first heard Karen sing, she sounded just like you hear her today, and she was only 16 years old. She had that God-given voice, and she never had to work on it. She also never wanted to sing, but just play the drums. But her older brother Richard, when he heard her sing, asked her to join his jazz band, and the rest is history.
You say you like piano, listen to Karen and Richard do the song, SOMETIMES. It still makes me tear up, 40 years after I first heard it.
Here's the link to SOMETIMES. ruclips.net/video/9IHFT4u6QFg/видео.html
Karen has the most Incredible voice. Her brothers harmonies are amazing too.
This song was the #1 wedding first dance song for years!
I, too, has started in recent years of really sitting and enjoying The Carpenters! My favorite song from them is "Top of the World" and it's an upbeat song and I love swaying to it when I either listen to it or sing to it! But if you're a sucker for the pIano, I hope you go back to some John Denver! In "The Wildlife Concert," John did a song with him playing the piano with strings accompanying him called "For You!"
Very deep message here. Beautiful vocals.
Right! her voice was from above. She was taken from us too soon. Now she is teaching angles how to sing.
I love the Carpenters just because they're awesome but also there's so much nostalgia in their music! My mom loved them so I can never hear them without thinking of mom❤ We lost her to breast cancer 8 years ago
I've likened her voice to a warm blanket on a cool fall night. Just want to wrap yourself up into it and drift off to sleep.
I also grew up with the Carpenters with "Close to You", "Please Mr. Postman", and Hurting Each Other" being three of my all time favorites. They (Karen) had so many wonderful hit songs, and yes, she does have the voice of an angel. I was on the very first date (with my now husband) when we heard that Karen Carpenter had passed away and it was shocking and oh so very sad. She died at just 32 years old which seemed so much older at the time because we weren't much more than babies but, in reality, she was still almost a kid herself. I believe it was her death that put a spotlight on Anorexia/Bulimia and brought it into the mainstream, I'm sure saving a lot of lives. She will live forever through her timeless music.
Karen Carpenter was my Daddy's favorite because she had the voice of an angel. She's one of my favorites as well. I hope Daddy has gotten to hear her sing in Heaven! ❤
This was not live, but lip synched to the studio recording. To see something live, try the "Burt Bacharach & Hal David Medley" on The Ed Sullivan Show-1970. It's so wonderful to watch Karen playing her drums and singing, and brother Richard at the electric piano. They were amazingly good live.
This was THE "Wedding Song" in the 1970's. A reviewer with Rolling Stone magazine said... "Karen Carpenter's voice is like the sound of a lover whispering in your ear."
Karen is the most talented woman in the history of pop music! And to top that off she was as cool a person as there ever has been. If you react to "superstar" you will be broken, unable to comprehend that something so divinely beautiful is coming from a supposed mortal! All i can say is good luck to you.
she is the best voice i have ever heard. tragic life, ain't that the way it goes.
You have an amazing Carpenters journey ahead of you. They are the ONE GROUP that I see reactionists (male, female, old, young, black, white, rappers, classicists, metal fans, etc.) left dumbfounded. They're a phenomenon.
Karen was and is angelic voice and a drummer 😢 🫶
RIP KAREN FLY HIGH. Fellow Downey Ca resident🤟🎵
I was 26 when she died in 1983 and I was broken hearted when I heard it . Thanks for doing the Carpenters
Probably one of the greatest voices that ever was. What a loss to the world.
A wedding reception song for decades.
LOVELY Karen, truly was a gift to the world.... from God above!
Thanks for saying. A Gift From Above. Which she was.😢😢😢❤❤❤. And her brother Richard who did a lot of the productions.
I remember Sunday afternoons when I would fall asleep listening to this Carpenters album on our stereo it was the early 70s I was just 6 or 7 years old and I remember feeling how perfect her voice was and these songs were. And that they made my childhood. It was devastating when she died. She was an angel for sure
