This song was written for a movie called "Unchained." About a man in jail singing to his love, sung by Todd Duncan. It was made in 55' and topped the billboard charts. It has been sung by many artists throughout the years but the most popular is the version sung by Bobby Hatfield which became a hit in 65' and topped the Billboard charts. The performance here was done live and sung by Bobby on the Andy Williams Variety Show. The version you are talking about that was played in the movie "Ghost" was the recorded version by Bobby Hatfield which became a hit again in 90', second time around for the Righteous Brothers as a hit. Bobby had pure talent, soul and a lot of passion in his singing. RIP Bobby.

The Righteous Brothers (not related) were made up of Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. Their style of music is called blue-eyed soul. They were magic together. They sometimes did solo versions of songs but mostly together. This one is done by Bobby Hatfield & is the best version hands down of this classic song. Sadly we lost Bobby Hatfield almost 20 years ago. He had a beautiful one of a kind voice. I would recommend "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" to see both guys singing from the group.

@@Passerby8822 No, it isn't. Lovin' Feeling is an entirely different thing, just as great in it's own right. This song was the most played on radio and T/V. in the 20th century, over 8 million plays. Now, in the 21st century, it has reached over 13 million plays, all this according to BMI. Bobby's version, which I call "Bobby's Song," was a hit twice in 1965 and again with the release of the movie "Ghost." No other song, by the same artist, has ever done that. 25 years apart. Bobby, a counter-tenor, was one of, if not THE, greatest singer ever lived. Sure there are many who have great technical talent, but Bobby and Bill both put all of their passion and feeling, plus so much soul, into every performance, live or recorded.

Bobby Hatfield was dealing with a nasty head cold in this performance, his mom was in the audience that night and he sang it for her. Amazing professionalism and an iconic talent. Bill Medley, iconic baritone, is the other half of 'Righteous Brothers'. They took turns singing solo and were unbelievable when they sang together. For the best of both I would recommend their legendary hit 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling'. They were the first 'Blue Eyed Soul" singers.

This video was from the Andy Williams show & was done live in Oct 1965 with Andy's band. No auto tune (wasn't invented yet) just Bobby, the band & a mic. Bobby did this as his solo on one of the albums that he & Bill recorded. Both of them wanted to record the song & they flipped a coin to see who recorded it , Bobby won. At the time Phil Specter was supposed to produce but was busy with other acts so Bill produced the song on the original. When it became a hit & they had to repress the record Specter's name was listed as producer. This performance on the show is one of the most watched video's ever. I had a huge crush on the Osmond brothers & thought there was no one better until I saw this performance & swore that Bobby was singing to me. I think all the girls/women in the audience felt the same. Never has any performance by anyone made me feel that way.

I loved your comment about not writing them like they used to.
In 1990 I was driving with my 16 yr old daughter and the studio version of this song from Ghost came on the radio. My daughter started swooning over it. She and her boyfriend had seen the movie over the weekend.
I said, “Eileen! That’s a really old song! I was close to your age when it came out.
She sighed and said, “They don’t make them like they used to.”
I started watching music reaction videos in 2020 when the first one popped up on my phone. It was this live version of the song, which I had not heard before. I must’ve missed this Andy Williams show on Valentines day 1965.
It amazes me to hear so many young people so surprised and raving about how great the music was back in “our day”. People had TALENT! They didn’t need electronic gadgets to make them sound good. We took it for granted because we didn’t know anything else.

In 1965 Bobby Hatfield (one of the 2 Righteous Brothers) sang Unchained Melody in the studio, without the stratospheric cadenza heard here. It was issued as the B side of a 45rpm disc. B sides were not expected to be hits, they were fillers that piggybacked for another, more touted song. That’s what you hear in the movie Ghost. Your video is from a contemporaneous TV show that picked up on the disc’s unexpected success. In that TV show host Andy Williams tells the OTHER Righteous Brother Bill Medley that what he really wants to hear is ‘Unchained Melody’. The whole thing must have been rehearsed, but it’s fun to hear Bob telling Bill to move over as HE’ll sing it alone.
Note how Bobby uses the consonants (b, g, t, m, d, g etc) as well as pauses (commas) to emphasize word pointing. The song is very melismatic, yodeling as you mention, which puts the focus on vowels. Bobby’s delivery of the lyrics is very conversational, accentuating the intimacy of the feelings expressed as well as the clarity of the words. This is great art,
in the service of pop song.
BTW: this song was composed by Alex North in 1955 for the movie Unchained.
North garnered 15 Academy Award (Oscar) nominations for his work in Hollywood. Unchained was one of them. He never won, but received a Lifetime Achievement Oscar. In the 1955 movie Unchained, a Black inmate longs for reunion with his beloved. He sings lying on his cell mattress. Another inmate accompanies his voice on a guitar. The lyrics depict his pining (I hunger for your touch), fear (Are you still mine?) and hope/plea (I’ll be coming home, wait for me, wait for me). The song has been adapted hundreds of times (literally) and performed by Elvis Presley, The Platters, U2 and dozens of others. It’s become as much an hymn to love as Edith Piaf’s La Vie en Rose.

Others can try but no one can sing this song like Bobby. Start with the fact that he's a countertenor who could sing baritone all the way up to notes even most sopranos can't reach. He had excellent breath control and almost playful phrasing. This song will always belong to Bobby Hatfield. The man had a God-given talent.

Yes, they used Bobby's recording of this song (probably the studio version) in the potter's clay scene in "Ghost."
In a longer version of the vid you just watched, Andy Williams is chatting with both artists. Andy asks Bill why he didn't participate in this song and let Bobby record it solo. "I didn't think it'd be a hit." "What do you do when he sings it?" "Go over in a corner and cry." [That's paraphrased, but pretty close.]
You can hear BOTH Righteous Brothers on "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" (which is used in the closing credits of "Top Gun," after Tom Cruise butchers the song in the body of the movie), and on "Soul and Inspiration."

One more piece of trivia. The duo of Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley were singing in a military NCO club in 1963 and at the end of one song a black soldier stood up and yelled "That was Righteous, Brother!" The duo thought that was cool and took on the name Righteous Brothers. Blacks could always relate to them and called them "Blue Eyed Soul." They flipped a coin to see who would sing Unchained Melody as a solo. Bobby Hatfield said he was very nervous at this performance in the video because his mother was in the audience.

Bobby Hatfield, been melting women's hearts since the middle 60's. The Righteous Brothers consist of Bobby and his partner Bill Medley. They did not write this song, it actually was made for a movie many years earlier, but the cover by the Righteous Brothers is the best known version and the version that everyone else tries to imitate. The show that this was recorded on was the Andy Williams Show and there was a short conversation between Andy Williams and both of the Righteous Brothers (it was cut out of the video that you reacted to). Andy asked Bill why he didn't participate in the singing of this song. His answer was "I didn't think it would become such a big hit". Bobby was a little extra nervous for this performance, as his parents were in the audience. We lost Bobby around 20 years ago, but Bill still tours and performs with a new partner. The movie that you were trying to think of with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze was the movie Ghost, and this was the version played in the background of the scene that you mentioned.

Just so no one misunderstands; the coin toss was not to decide who would sing it on this show (it was months earlier) & Bill was joking when he said he didn’t think it’d be a hit (he does “deadpan” humor). Bill & Bobby had agreed to do 1 solo each, per album. Unchained Melody was to be a solo & both wanted it. They famously flipped a coin & Bobby won. He recorded it March 1965, released July 17, 1965 & it was a big hit. No question Bobby was going to sing it, 3 months later (Oct. 25, 1965), on the hugely popular Andy Williams Show. Bill played piano on the studio version & has also “deadpanned”; had he known it would be a hit, he’d have hired a better piano player. Both Bill & Bobby confirmed that Bill actually produced it, even though Phil Spector claimed credit.

I bet Bobby's singing coach said to him (when he did a final version of the song) 'If you sing like this, in front of an audience - I guarantee you, they will be raving about it for years', and he was right. Here we are, 57 years later (2022) , and it is still, by far, the best version, ever sung. A lot of the reactions we've seen (on youtube), of people watching it for the first time, have been from people, simply giving their opinion about it - but if you want a real professional, giving his take on it, then go to ruclips.net/video/boXkA9G5PL4/видео.html called 'British guitarist analyses the Righteous Brothers live in 1965'. He will even give you the musical notes Bobby sang (20 of them), when he performed his stunning rendition of it, no auto-tune required!

I was lucky enough to be around and danced many a steps to this song when it came first out and it still has the power to make me want to dance to it again. Love you young people's reactions to this song. Your eyes start to smile, then you all give a small smile, then you start to kinda sway, and the ladies always start patting their chest. This performance was from The Andy Williams show. Song was written for a movie from the 50's about a guy serving time in prison. Bobby's version is the absolutely best performance ever performed.

Absolutely gorgeous version of this classic song. His was the standard for this song and has stood the test of time and been my favourite for a long, long time. Lucy Thomas has just released her version in which she slows the delivery down, extending the vocal further throughout. Well worth checking out as it may now be my favourite although Bobby’s is absolutely neck and neck. Best wishes, Brian

Great reaction Barry. This is from Wiki: "Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955),[1] hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack.[2] It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers in 1965.[3] According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages. They have some other great ones - dig in!

Okay, Barry, I made myself watch this. And I am FOR SURE crying and you are not crying. This was my parents song and my father passed away last June. So bittersweet. Coming up on one year and trust me, I am not at all looking forward to June 16. When I was a little girl riding in the backseat with my evil older brothers, my Dad would sing it to my Mom and the part that goes “are you still mine?” Well, if she was mad at him she would answer, Maybe. And if she wasn’t mad, she would answer, Always. Sigh. Wait, wait and oh my gosh WAIT! Barry, you could do this song. It would be beautiful, gorgeous and all the words. My RUclips channel reviewing It’s Me Barry isn’t really taking off with just 2 Barry songs after all? Well, the 2 that I have managed to find so far. Not many can do this song justice but I have this little feeler that Barry could! And should! I saw you thinking during the song Barry, I did! SING Barry! ❤️
