Charlie Hodge his confidant and best friend I became friends with for years after Elvis died n he told me many great stories about Elvis I even kept a journal on the stories that he told me. One was after singing this song n walking back stage he started to cry. N when they showed him the all white suit they wanted him to wear he left n went to a men's store n bought a red scarf to wear around his neck, he said that it represented the blood that was shed

One of the most impressive was when he and Jerry Schilling flew commercial from LA to Washington for Elvis' meeting with Nixon in 1970. Elvis cashed a check for $500 in LA so they'd have money for the trip, but on the plane he met a soldier on his way home from Vietnam and gave the five hundred bucks - every cent he had on him - to the returning serviceman. Truly a generous soul.

Due to the deaths of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Presidential candidate, Robert Kennedy, Elvis was so touched by these events that he wanted to do something. This is my favorite Elvis song. His backup singers, musicians and everyone in the control room said this is the one and only time they ever seen Elvis cry while singing on stage. After the performance was over they all went backstage and just hugged each other and cried. Elvis then went and locked himself on the bus alone for over an hour and got on his knees and prayed and cried.

The songs obvious message of racial equality and civil rights for disenfranchised African Americans was something Elvis firmly believed in and he chose to end his 1968 comeback special with this controversial song instead of taking the easy option of doing a Christmas musical performance which was originally pushed on him by his management.
The back story of this is at the end of his 1968 Special. When Elvis came back from his Army duty, he wasn't sure if people would still attend his concerts like before so he did this Special and to close it, he went alone on stage to sing this song. Now his agent, Colonel Parker, didn't want him to sing this song but Elvis insisted. He was full of emotion after the assassination of Martin Luther King and of course, Bobby Kennedy and he was so distraught that he sang this song. There are quite a few lines from Martin's 'I Have A Dream' speech as well. When he finished and the curtains closed, he fell to the ground and cried for a very long time. He has only sang it a very few times since then (of course, before his death) but that song was to heartbreaking for him. I saw him perform live in 1970 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It was absolutely an honor to see an icon that changed music and culture. He kicked in the door for so many that followed him. He was more than just an entertainer, he was a poor boy from Mississippi that became the biggest star in the world. Elvis' life was a story Hollywood couldn't have written.

This was aired in December of 68. Elvis's manager Tom Parker wanted the last song to be a cheesy Christmas song but Elvis stood up to him (one of the few times) and insisted it be If I Can Dream. He was right of course. I saw Elvis July 1976 in Rochester N.Y. at the War Memorial Coliseum. We had floor seats so I was able to get up to the stage and pretty close to him and his Blue Blue eyes. It was surreal...there he was Elvis Presley. I'll never forget it.

I saw Elvis in Chicago in May 1976 at the old Chicago Stadium. This was about 15 months before he died and so means all the more to me. I was sitting in the second balcony with my boyfriend, Elvis was a little white dot on the stage that felt miles away and yet I was transported to dreamland watching and listening. I remember putting my chin in my hands and releasing a huge sigh and my boyfriend stated he wished I felt like that about him and I told him 'If you were Elvis, I would!' Gee, wonder why we broke up. Then just a few months later I was sitting in my car waiting for the light to turn green and the most horrible news came across the radio: Elvis had died. That shook me to my bones and I remember the horrible feeling of loss to his family, his community and to his very loving fans. One of my favorite songs by Elvis is 'Ghetto'. I had the great fortune of seeing Elvis when I was 6 in 1973. My mom took me. I’ve never forgotten it. The music, the women screaming (mom included 😂). I remember clearly the day he died. My mother bawled so hard. There will never be another King imo. I still love him to this day and his messages are needed as much today as ever. A trailblazer in so many ways.

I was 17 when this Comeback Special was on. It was awesome and exciting that night. I went to my brother's house so that my sister in law and I could watch it and not be bothered. It was really an unforgettable moment in time.
There was only one Elvis, never to matched again. Every song he sang HE FELT! He got a bad rap from a lot of people but, they didn't know him like others did and they didn't want to know him. There are quite a few lines from Martin's 'I Have A Dream' speech as well. When he finished and the curtains closed, he fell to the ground and cried for a very long time. He has only sang it a very few times since then (of course, before his death) but that song was to heartbreaking for him. There's a documentary that shows how Elvis had no racism in his heart whatsoever and felt that he had to pay his respect to MLK. This was from the heart and soul. Thanks for the reaction as always. I saw him perform live in 1970 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
It was absolutely an honor to see an icon that changed music and culture. He kicked in the door for so many that followed him.
He was more than just an entertainer, he was a poor boy from Mississippi that became the biggest star in the world.
Elvis' life was a story Hollywood couldn't have written.
You were very lucky, he was an adonis then, people have said he was even better looking in the flesh.
His voice too was the best then.

This was aired in December of 68. Elvis's manager Tom Parker wanted the last song to be a cheesy Christmas song but Elvis stood up to him (one of the few times) and insisted it be If I Can Dream. He was right of course. I saw Elvis July 1976 in Rochester N.Y. at the War Memorial Coliseum. We had floor seats so I was able to get up to the stage and pretty close to him and his Blue Blue eyes. It was surreal...there he was Elvis Presley. I'll never forget it.
He was absolutely AMAZING!! I still listen to his songs at least once a day. There's just something about his voice that makes me feel at peace with the world. I saw Elvis in Chicago in May 1976 at the old Chicago Stadium. This was about 15 months before he died and so means all the more to me. I was sitting in the second balcony with my boyfriend, Elvis was a little white dot on the stage that felt miles away and yet I was transported to dreamland watching and listening. I remember putting my chin in my hands and releasing a huge sigh and my boyfriend stated he wished I felt like that about him and I told him 'If you were Elvis, I would!' Gee, wonder why we broke up.
Then just a few months later I was sitting in my car waiting for the light to turn green and the most horrible news came across the radio: Elvis had died. That shook me to my bones and I remember the horrible feeling of loss to his family, his community and to his very loving fans.

I had the great fortune of seeing Elvis when I was 6 in 1973. My mom took me. I’ve never forgotten it. The music, the women screaming (mom included 😂). I remember clearly the day he died. My mother bawled so hard. There will never be another King imo. I still love him to this day and his messages are needed as much today as ever. A trailblazer in so many ways.

I was 17 when this Comeback Special was on. It was awesome and exciting that night. I went to my brother's house so that my sister in law and I could watch it and not be bothered. It was really an unforgettable moment in time.

There was only one Elvis, never to matched again. Every song he sang HE FELT! He got a bad rap from a lot of people but, they didn't know him like others did and they didn't want to know him. I've watch the Elvis documentaries and he did so much for so many without any fanfare. Truly a legend that will never be forgotten. Love your reactions, have a great day.
My wife and I saw him live in Philadelphia...I swear everyone there stood for the entire concert...It was an incredible experience.
