      @For Every Kind of Geek I read the first volume of Fractions run years ago and Demon in a Bottle in college, which were great and if I had more free time I would've gotten my hands on some more. Now I definitely will :)

    Good video, but I personally disagree about Mandarin's inclusion.
    Seeds were planted from the beginning and it makes sense. It doesn't take away from Tony's flaws or government/S.H.I.E.L.D. building a dark world at the very least because of characters like Jack Kooning or Norman Osborn who either sell their souls to allow such stuff keep happening or simply use everything happening to their advantage.
    And sympathetic take on Tony is seen throughout whole run like usually. Tony is flawed, but ultimately good, selfless guy rising above his problems.
    It's one of the reasons why Knaufs's run is one of my favorites because it managed to make such story in the time when Marvel treated Tony very very dirty.

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  Год назад +2

      Oh I think it's executed really well, I just don't know if I connect with the thematic underpinning. I personally read this as a story made to confront America's zeal in the war on terror, so putting it all on the Mandarin feels like a step back instead if digging into why it was a mistake in the first place.
      I get the motivation to give a sympathetic take too, especially post-civil-war, but I'd argue doing that undercuts some of the commentary that's being made. To me, it's an interesting case of two very strong concepts not quite gelling together.
      I still love the Knaufs' voice on this character, though. They have an incredible way with character and dialogue and I wished they'd stayed on to develop this era a little more.

    • @armenmanvel
      @armenmanvel Год назад

      I see where you coming from, but I think that's why Knaufs had scene as intense as Tony interrogating secretary. The guy is just full of crap with or without Mandarin, who's just a guy on the inside. The story doesn't even go into "it was all foreigners", it instead shows how easy it's for America to turn a blind eye on something as awful as this purely because that's something they're doing themselves in the name of greater good. I guess it all comes down to difference in perspective which is fair, I respect that.
      I would love Knaufs more too, same with Stuart Moore tbh. The latter had another great Iron Man story with similar themes and tone in the first issue of anthology series 'Breaking into comics the Marvel way', I highly recommend it if you didn't read it and would like more of that era's style Iron Man.
      Also would love to see you make a video on Kaminski and/or Grell and Mantlo runs, one of my favorites, especially Kaminski that's imo the best Iron Man has been and Grell who's run is very underrated and surprisingly grounded take on the character.

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  Год назад +4

      Absolutely! I've even covered a few myself. My personal favorites are the Michelinie/Layton/JRjr run, which leads into Dennis O'Neil and Luke McDonnell's series, then Kurt Busiek and Sean Chen's, then Director of SHIELD, Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca's, and most recently Christopher Cantwell and Cafu's Books of Korvac

    If there were some complaints about this run, I'd say it would be the lack of continuity. There's no mention of Rumiko Fujikawa, who died in 2004s run, and Temujin (Mandarin's son), who was built up as the big bad during that run, gets only a mention by name. Other than that, this run is awesome. The idea to make a post-Civil War Iron Man comic into an espionage thriller with the Mandarin as the big bad was an inspiring choice. Probably the darkest Iron Man story ever told (if you don't count Dennis O'Neil stuff).

    • @ForEveryKindofGeek
      @ForEveryKindofGeek  Год назад

      I will say Temujin actually gets a mention in the series. But yeah, it felt like from Extremis a lot of Iron Man's broader history got ignored in favor of a more grounded approach. I get it, but there are ways to make that work.
