    The massive gaps between releases really killed the momentum of Earth One. They’re pretty quick reads, and having to wait two years between comics that take maybe an hour to get through makes it hard to stay excited. The art is good, but I’d rather have less meticulously detailed art and a steadier release schedule.

      My favorite is how it really focuses on Bruce being a Arkham, and how he either has fallen to the curse that has plagued his family for generations, or has broken and stood against it.

    • @CalvinNoire
      @CalvinNoire 4 месяца назад +2

      @@projekttaku1 Bruce Wayne being an Arkham is such a good idea, it adds one more thing that Bruce has to overcome; the supposed "curse" of his family, even Martha Wayne (Arkham) was not mentally well, will he overcome it? Or will he fall? Considering he's wearing a bat suit and fighting crime in the Streets, you could argue he's already insane, but yet he's still a good guy even after it all.

    • @projekttaku1
      @projekttaku1 4 месяца назад

      @@CalvinNoire its a fantastic dilemma. The Wayne family lore has been constantly expanded upon, with a supposed "dark history", but we don't get to seem much into Martha nor her family, and its actually extremely heartwarming watching Bruce try to connect with his mentally unwell grandfather, even if it just turns out to be Clayface.

    The problem is most likely that the new 52 made the earth one books redundant because they were being released at the same time. Think about it, would you choose the ( then) in continuity series with the all the hype behind it, or the separate series with no ties to anything at the time? It worked with ultimate Spider-Man because that was an ongoing series that came out regularly and immediately revealed that it was part of something bigger.
    Plus, now with the Black Label line, Earth One seems even more unnecessary Unless they just fold earth one into that Branding

    While I don't like vol 3 (I think Johns tried to do way too much in one book) I think Batman Earth One still one the best reinventions of Batman story. Besides the development of Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock dynamic, I specially like how flawed Batman is in these stories. Considering how Batman nowadays is basically a Gary Stu, who knows everthing and pull deus ex-machinas from his belt, it's good to see a version of him who is not the best, who makes mistakes but never to the point of being a fool, learning from his failures and becoming stronger and better hero.

    Recently got volume three and had to reread the first two because I forgot what happened in them. I did enjoy all three for this humanized batman but volume 2 is my favorite for its use of the Riddler. The way that he is done, you can tell he isn't much of a fair gamesman, even when Batman solves his riddle. We may not get a volume four but dang, you can't end a book with Joker and just leave it. Something about that Joker page just seems extreme and that he would change this batman forever.

Seeing how 2022's 'The Batman' takes a lot of cues and inspiration from this particular version of the character made extremely happy, as we finally got the chance to see an interpretation of Batman based on something that wasn't 'Year One', 'The Dark Knight Returns', 'The Killing Joke' or 'The Long Halloween' on its entirely.

    One aspect I'm surprised you didn't delve on much is Harvey Bullock. He was one of the most interesting characters in the book that he starts out as a well-meaning but smug celebrity detective who is introduced to the horrors of Gotham and goes on a downward spiral into alcoholism. It's a shame they don't really do much with his character by Vol. 3.
    Also, that Outsiders tease at the end reminded me a lot of how Beware the Batman set up the Outsiders by the end, but with no season 2 to really expand on that premise.

    I feel you could’ve stood to be more critical toward the 3rd volume. I understand if your opinion isn’t that it was bad or noticeably worse than the other two, but I think the fact that the entire plot is predicated on an incredibly obvious twist, several overused tropes, and underdeveloped reveals is a major reason the series became the overall disappointment with potential that it is. The ending kind of retroactively impacts the other volumes by poorly dragging out the Dent storyline beyond volume 2, and having everything lead up to this Batman universe becoming very similar with in-canon Batman, despite the initial concept’s appeal being that it’s supposed to be different. If it all just winds up the same with slight differences here and there, than the story loses significance as its own thing

    • @projekttaku1
      @projekttaku1 7 месяцев назад

      I think while the reveals were kinda weird, I still enjoyed them. The dent thing was kind of hilarious. It went from the reader thinking Harvey would become two-face, to the reader thinking Jessica would become two-face, to the characters thinking Jessica's two-face, to the audience and characters thinking harvey's alive and two-face, to the audience and batman finding out Jessica was in fact two-face.
      I think its still decently different enjoy to be unique. Killer croc is a major part of this, plus clayface.

    So I don’t think anything went wrong outside of delays on the artistic side?
    I think the Frank Art is very much worth it, but yeah I get what you mean, especially with time lapse between volumes 2 and 3. We can also ignore the Catwoman costume (it goes away by the end of the third volume).
    I wanna say Johns had said that he had 6 volumes in mind for this series, but that maybe hoping for too much. Still a lot of room to explore and those two are still collaborating even now right? Seems within the cards if they do deem it.
    I think for me, the thing that makes this work, is that it presents a Batman built from the ground up. All of the pluralities that are added on to Batman which allow him to measure up to other heroes, are taken away, and all you really have left is the Human, the Man if you will. It overall represents a more complete journey for the character, and sometimes felt more satisfying to read than a lot of the modern “Because He’s Batman” interpretations. I love BatGod, but I also love Batman who is fallible, who makes mistakes, who isn’t perfect all the time, thats what I love about this series.
    Ultimately for me, Batman doesn’t need to be the ultimate fighter or detective, he just needs to try to be those things or work towards it, that’s what made this story compelling and worth reading.
    I also would love if you made a video on Three Jokers like this, I know that’s probably more maligned, but I think What Went Wrong applies there more than here overall, even if I still like that story.
    Thank you for being a positive voice in the comics community, you’re videos are some of the best content on the medium on the internet!

Beware the Batman, Gotham, Batman Telltale, The Batman movie and arguably Joker and Batman v Superman took some elements from Earth One so it at least has that going for it at the very least

    I dunno why, but I like that they made Killer Croc and Catwoman, who're normally evil, actually side with Batman. It's something different that's interesting to see play out in a comic and it's odd that they don't really do stuff like that these days (unless they have Harley Quinn/the Suicide Squad involved, but they're not full-on heroes either)

    • @thomaskilroy4573
      @thomaskilroy4573 2 года назад +3

      Catwoman is never evil. I don’t know what friggin comics you’ve been reading but she is almost always depicted as an Anti-Hero who whilst being a thief is also an ally and romantic interest of Batman. It’s only Killer Croc they turned into a good guy.

    After having finally watched the full video, I agree about your point when it comes how Jessica arc was executed, and also about the outsiders. As for the future of the series, Johns stated that he want to do more volumes of Batman: Earth One, and he wants to work the Joker in this universe. Now when will that happen is another story.

    GREAT job as usual Owen.Well done.A couple days ago my neighbor and I were discussing Superman/Batman about how O.P.ed,unrelatable,make no mistakes,have no character growth/arc these 2 are.And here;s a video/comic series addressing those very issues.Didn't know about or buy these comics(haven't been to a comicshop since 2007)Gary's artwork is GREAT in this series,consistently. If I can get the whole series for a reasonable price will buy it.I still think Superman is too O.Ped,unrelatable,etc,etc,..he's basically a god. Looking down at us from Mount Olympus,makes no mistakes,has no character flaws-BORING.And Superman/Batman are 2 of my favorite heroes.In Man of Steel Supes struggled to fly,then flew-people in the audience CHEERED.So did I.Man of Steel gets a lot of hate,but I thought it was a GREAT film.The best Superman movie to date,does anyone remember SUPERMAN RETURNS??? Neither do I,forgetable movie. SEMPER-FI.

      @@2jebeal “Understood the character more than anybody”?! You must be fucking joking. Just because he has the best movies does not mean he understood the character. He didn’t. He was always far too over the top, his Bruce Wayne seemed like he was either looking for attention or trying to hide something and doing a bad job of it. I like Bale, don’t get me wrong. But it just feels like, apart from Batman Begins, he is always one of the least interesting parts of the movie. Bale is okay in his films, it just feels like he’s playing a different character. Or at least he’s playing a Bruce Wayne that is TRYING to be Batman and ‘Public Bruce’, not a Wayne that IS Batman. The voice is ridiculous, but even taking that out of the equation, he’s still too over the top. He’s always pulling weird faces and keeping his mouth open. His mouth is literally open 90% of the time he’s in the suit. He never comes across as that intelligent or cunning either. There are far too many times where he is fooled or duped by the villains and is just made to look stupid. And the public persona of Bruce Wayne is meant to be deceptive, but it isn’t supposed to be annoying. Bale’s Bruce doesn’t seem to take anything seriously. Bruce’s public persona is cocky, but it is still supposed to be likable. With Bale, if someone told you he was Batman, you wouldn’t be that surprised. You’d know that he seemed off. His Batman also always seemed like he wasn’t naturally threatening and was trying too hard to be intimidating. Again, there is nothing wrong with the writing of Bale’s Wayne/Batman. The problem is just how he played it. Apart from Begins, which is probably his best performance in the role, I don’t see Batman in those films. I see an actor playing a character based on Batman. The notes are all there, but something is off. Batman is supposed to be the true persona. Batman is who he really is. Bruce Wayne is the mask. In the Nolan films. It is completely the wrong way round. Nolan’s whole idea of Bruce Wayne being the true identity becomes painfully clear in The Dark Knight Rises. One of the biggest complaints about that film was that “Batman” was only shown for about 20 minutes altogether. And the reason is because Nolan doesn’t believe he is telling the story of Batman, he believes he is telling the story of Bruce Wayne (which he has said himself in multiple interviews). This is about Bruce Wayne’s struggle. When Bruce Wayne finally gets over his massive existential crisis he stops being Batman. Bale’s Bruce used Batman as a means to an end. A way to help him figure out who he is. Once he figured that out, did what he was set out to accomplish, he didn’t need Batman anymore, he could just be himself again. Are you fucking kidding me?!?! Batman isn’t a fucking job! It’s who he is! You can’t just retire from that! And yes I know that in Batman Begins Rachel talks about how Bruce Wayne is the mask and Batman is who he really is. But Rachel’s an idiot. And that dialogue only exists to clarify to fans that Batman is who he really is when nothing else in the movies show it and it’s obviously a fucking lie. That’s why his performance as Batman feels so much like a performance. It’s unnatural. It’s not who he truly is. And that is NOT the result of a team of people who understand the character.

    I just read all three volumes back to back in one day, and I enjoyed them. I think they are all pretty unique and fun comics with some problems, specifically the third volume trying to do wayyy too much toward the end. I think if this series was more consistent with releasing in a timely manner it would be a lot better. If they planned it to have one earth one book per series every year, I think that would’ve been way better. I’m almost a decade, from 2012-2021 we got THREE Batman volumes in this series. That’s kinda crazy when you think about it. Still, I enjoyed this interpretation of Batman, and it’s also crazy how much Pattinson’s Batman takes influence from these comics.

    I have to say I liked the idea of killer croc being one of Batman's allies. I think its a unique take on the character. Can't say I find much else interesting though. I wonder how many of the similarities between this film and the reeves film were intentional.
