i like to imagine a world where Wright got to make a more stylized, individual Ant-Man that audiences loved and that gave Marvel incentive to let other filmmakers have there vision. Just because these movies are in the same world doesn’t mean they all have to be interconnected or feel like the same aesthetic. These characters live in different places with different people and different personalities. The movies should reflect that and I don’t think “superhero fatigue” would be such a thing if Marvel/Disney (and other studios) weren’t just following the same formula (almost) every time.
i have three examples where straying from the predetermined path cause marvel issues....Shane black had control which is why we got the mandarin in iorn man 3.......thor love nd thunder......tikia got chart blanche and we got that .........and thor 2 was kenneth's idea that they got but got done by alan taylor and that was so trash....also sam rami had the go on Multiverse of madness
@@lucky112 The Mandarin in Iron Man 3, aka the most brilliant villain misdirect in the MCU? That Mandarin? From the movie the internet loves to pretend sucks despite the fact that in the real world, it's the most well liked Iron Man movie? Also, in MoM it was pretty clear Sam Raimi was undermined. You can super-easily tell which parts of the movie are all his and which aren't, it's practically 2 movies smashed together. And as you said, the problem with Thor 2 ISN'T giving too much power to Kenneth Branagh, but rather letting a middling director best known for TV work take the reigns instead of getting someone else with a strong vision. And sure, Taiki made some really bad choices in Love and Thunder, however there's no denying that Ragnarok revitalized the MCU and set the tone going forward. I'd rather gamble on a great director with full control and get a Love and Thunder any day of the week over having Marvel walk all over an inexperienced indie filmmaker and wind up with yet another Eternals.
@@z-beeblebrox I don't believe Taika had full control of L&T. Even if he did had misfires in it, it was overall too much of a safe product to not have been shaped by a committee. The just under 2 hours runtime is also suspicious.
You're spot on with MoM though. The difference between Raimi's energy and the MCU's is so great, you could get whiplash.
What about Winter Soldier, the Guardians of the galaxy trilogy, Thor Ragnarok, what about the examples where keeping on the same pre determined path has caused marvel issues. The ant man trilogy as a whole being a bland and forgettable set of movies except for the 3rd one cuz it's memorably bad. What about the majority of the Disney plus shows that always have a great starting concept but always trash it for mediocre formulaic scripts. What marvel needs isn't a formula, but a theme. Not an overall theme but a theme that is unique to each character. One amazing example of this is into the spider-verse. Having all those different and unique characters playing off one another would have been amazing. Imagine the entire captain America trilogy having a spy action espionage theme contrasted with Iron Man comedic narcissism theme similar to that of the hangover. The hulk's action horror theme vs thor's Flash Gordon theme. Or better yet making Captain Marvels films just straight up 80s action movies instead of the mediocrity that the first film was. So much stuff could be done with ditching the formula that would help rid the superhero fatigue that's set in and allow for directors to create their vision.@@lucky112
It's funny that Marvel let Wright go because they felt his movie would be too 'unique' then got Taika Waititi to do Thor. If it wasn't for Watiti's unique take on his first Thor movie, Thor as a character would have been floundering by the time EndGame came around (we don't talk about the second Waititi movie because that was a movie that just tried to double down on the good bits that didn't need to be doubled down)
been hyped for this one, this is the biggest missed opportunity of any superhero movie ever.
For real....Peyton Reed did an awesome job on the first but I would've loved to have seen it with Edgar Wright at the helm.

I love the Ant-Man we got, but I would of loved to see Edgar’s Wright version, heist films are some of my favorites and a superhero heist film would be amazing

Wright's unique style might have seen his standalone vision clash with the interconnectedness the MCU later embraced. The absence of the Quantum Realm in his version is notable, given its significance in "Endgame.", the loss of Wright's unique voice in "Ant-Man" is an artistic tragedy, leaving us to ponder what could've been a more nuanced, groundbreaking addition to the MCU.
His style would've been perfect, and considering what they've done to some of their characters since then, I don't think it would matter anyways. I mean look at Thor ffs, he is such a joke, and I liked the 2nd movie at first but Taika isn't anywhere near the level of Wright! He doesn't seem to have the care, or even the talent really, that Edgar Wright has. Anyways, while I did like the first And-man movie, it is so forgettable, I can only imagine what Wright's version would have been. As it stands, I think you watch that movie once, and never even think about it ever again, they did nothing interesting with that whole premise, which is a shame.
No one cares about the quantum realm, they could've used some other plot device.

The problem was he took too long to make it, he pushed the movie back too long by the time he wanted to make a stand-alone film avengers already came out and Kevin alr made up his mind. It’s a tragedy but I can’t blame marvel for not wanting to make a stand-alone marvel movie considering standalones were over by 2014. Hell, TASM 2 was the only standalone marvel movie out and there were even talks about a cinematic universe in those films by then.
Their biggest missed opportunity was using Scott lang instead of Hank. If they focused on hanks split personality with yellow jacket and his fall as ant man that would’ve worked so well. After endgame hank passes on the mantle to Scott and goes on hiatus until joining the thunderbolts as Yellowjacket. Scott could’ve been a villain in one of the movies stealing pym tech, and by the end of his arc he becomes antman

Damn, Edgar Wright is my favourite director and his version of Ant-Man sounds like it could’ve been one of the best MCU films to date
I remember being so psyched about him making a superhero movie and immediately making the connection with Sam Raimi doing Spider-Man. When Wright wasn't involved anymore it was the first red flag about the MCU for me.
You should look into Fox's version of civil war. This was before the MCU version civil war. It had cameos from tim story's F4, afflecks Daredevil, singers Xmen, deadpool and I believe cages ghost rider. The studios also wanted paul green grass to direct. It sounded pretty bonkers but very interesting.

I'm really conflicted, because I absolutely love Edgar Wright's films and his style, and I think an Ant-Man movie in his particular writing and directing style would be perfect, but I totally do get Marvel wanting to make it more connected with their larger MCU, which I think is one of it's biggest strengths. I just wish better compromises could have been made so we could've gotten both.

One of the biggest problems is that the MCU forgot it's own successful formula. In Phase 1, there was barely any crossover except for a few easter eggs and end credits scene. Now, they try so hard to interconnect the actual mainline stories that it's completely useless to try to follow it all.
IF they would've kept that same style as Phase 1, they wouldn't have to shit on Wright's vision. I would've loved to see Ant-Man in Phase 1. I never new it was planned and was wondering YTF there was no Ant-Man in the start of the Avengers forming.
This honestly makes me so sad. I met Edgar Wright during a cornetto trilogy signing and expressed my enthusiasm for the antman film. I knew it would be amazing after seeing the test footage. It's a damn shame the world will never get to see it.
1) Awesome video dude! 2) Knowing this now, I feel like Ant-Man being in the Rodgers musical from Hawkeye makes a LOT more sense. I initially wrote it off as "oh he's so small the general public wouldn't really know if he was there or not." But now I think someone put it there as a DEEP nod to what could've been.

Edgar Wright's Ant-man movie was one of the one's I was so excited to see! When it was announced he left the movie, I was so sad. Thanks for explaining what his original vision was.
I think Edgar would have worked well with that cast.
Ant-Man being Phase One could have led to Ant-Man and the Wasp being founding Avengers just like in the comics. As much as I enjoyed the first 2 Ant-Man films, Edgar’s version would have been a great addition in Phase One, though I don’t think he’d be willing to stick around for the sequels. Despite the MCU’s criticisms, at least the Guardians movie do have a distinct auteur’s thumbprint from James Gunn. Unfortunately, Taika Waititi failed to emulate that. (though I genuinely think Taika is an amazing director)
He’s superb so don’t know why his next releases lacked what clearly worked before.

Awesome, seeing a channel do an in-depth look at Edgar Wrights original take on Ant-Man, with some details I didn't even know about. Loving your content in general & covering these stories were it's not a canceled film per se, like with X-Men The Last Stand.
Side note, but what confuses me about the whole Edgar Wright situation is that the final product, while containing a ton of references, cameos, etc. To the rest of the MCU mostly stands on it's on, and if you had cut them out the movie remains largely the same, I can't see how Marvel couldn't tweak his script to make it more clear that this is a post Avengers world, while maintaining his same vision & style.
Everything about this film's development highlights Marvel Studio's mistrust in directors/writers to craft a unique experience, with a great set of characters & stories that an audience can connect to, without inserting their formalized screenwriting structure, jokes & quirky humor, etc. Best showcased by how they wanted to change Scott Langs history & criminal career

Wow, you could say that in terms of production history, this is basically The Emperor's New Groove all over again.
I wonder if it would have been as compromised a film as Edgar believes simply by adding MCU's bigger picture elements. But I guess being uncompromising is what makes them auteurs, for better or worse. Ant-man turned out fantastic, regardless.
They included the montage to make it look like it was an Edgar Wright film
I have really have mixed feelings about this, I originally thought the villain was going to be Egghead or Whirlwind or Ultron because Egghead was Hank Pym’s arch enemy and the Whirlwind who has a personal connection to both him and the Wasp as he was Janet’s personal driver to get close to her and Ultron because he was Hank Pym’s creation, his Frankenstein monster and as for Darren Cross when he came in Antman 3 as MODOK he said that he and Scott are like Brothers even though they barely know each other.

Wright's antman would be good for a phase 1 movie. But I don't think it would work as a phase 2 movie. I agree that it would've stuck out like a sore thumb.
Maybe it would've worked as a Phase Two Introduction movie instead of Iron Man 3.
I actually think it would work much better as a current MCU movie, the MCU has been less afraid of getting weird lately and has even broken the 4th wall, an Edgar Wright movie would hardly feel out of place now
That's hilarious to hear, considering just a few years later after Wright dropped out we got Thor 3, which completely changed the tone of the franchise without any reason and was nonsensical all around.

@@thebarksman it's not a matter of liking it or not (I don't like it either), but it's a fact that the movie contradicts everything that came before. Thor's personality change happens off-screen, without any reason being given to it.

This is one situation where no one is in the wrong and while you can dream on what was lost, what we got was really great! I think it worked out for the best for both parties.
I have heard talks of the MCU preparing to reboot in someway. I don’t think it’s out of the question to have Edgar Wright come back and make his own version again. Edgar Wright is not the only example of this, many things have changed throughout marvels, cinematic history. One of which is James Cameron’s Spider-Man.

I would like to see that. But Kevin Feige (if he's still going to be with Marvel at that time) is going to have to allow directors whom have a passion for their planned out projects, execute it.

Honestly I would’ve loved to have seen Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man he’s done some really good films on different genres like _Shaun of the Dead,_ _Hot Fuzz,_ and _Baby Driver_ which are some of my favourite films of his.
Real shame Marvel Studios ditched Edgar Wright’s version of Ant-Man after trying to get the project off the ground for over a decade because they didn’t want make an Edgar Wright driven movie, even though he still maintained honorary credits as Screenwriter and Story in the finished film.
But I think Edgar Wright made the wisest decision on leaving the project, Marvel would’ve likely butchered his vision for Ant-Man even further if he stayed as director.
For example if I was a filmmaker and wanted to do a R Rated Horror movie of Venom, Sony too would butcher my vision and say to me “No we want a PG-13 Superhero Comedy”, I would walk out of the project in an Edgar Wright style manner.
Big studios both become the birth and death of these cinematic properties. Thats how they fucked up 3 spider-man franchises. Dont blame you

It would've been nice to see Wright's version where there would've been more space for loosely connected one-shots with unique style. While also somehow still having time to complete his Cornetto trilogy. I kind of hope somewhere out in the multiverse there's a universe where he successfully was able to do both somehow without tiring or hurting himself.

Why does everyone always lump in the scene with Tony Stark and Thunderbolt Ross as a post credit scene? That was part of the actual movie before the credits even rolled, Incredible Hulk did not have a post credit scene.....

Seeing Edgar Wright's Ant-Man truly would have been something special, definitely a missed opportunity and very unfortunate that Marvel passed over Edgar Wright's version.
I still love the Ant Man movies we got, especially the first one, the first Ant Man is still my favorite of all the three Ant Man movies. That said, I still wonder how things would’ve turned out had Edgar Wright remained, his version of Ant Man sounds very intriguing especially looking back at the earlier SDCC test footage teaser trailer
So a fan of the comic and character was kicked off of making a comicbook movie because he wanted to be faithful to the story and character.

with the introduction of the Marvel multiverse its a shame that we never got to see Wright's Antman as an alternate version of the mainstream Ant-Man.
This is an interesting what if, but I think the Ant-Man we got was really good. Especially with the expansion of Luis, Hope, and Yellowjacket.

I hope Mr. Wright will have his chance to work on superhero movie again with his own style.
Surely all this could've been resolved by just setting the movie in 2008, when Iron Man takes place. Its connections to the wider MCU could've been included in a post credits scene, and I'm sure they could've squeezed in some easter eggs like news footage of Iron Man fighting Iron Monger on the news to make sure audiences understand its set in the same universe, without intruding to much on Edgar's story. They could've even made a joke out of Ant-Man being present and helping out in the events between phase 1 and phase 2, just that he was too small to be noticed by the other Avengers.
I wish i could've seen that version. He made 1 of my favourite comedy movies of all time with Hot Fuzz. It could've possibly been a literal masterpiece. I believe some of his comedy is still there like I came back to return a suit i stole.
It's sad we didn't get to experience an Edgar Wright directed Ant-Man. Especially since we know now what can happen when Marvel brings in some directors like Taika and Gunn with very unique visions.
I had heard director Payden and Rudd talk at a panel right before the film was about to release where the two of them just met every day and hashed out the script non-stop, but with the mindset of keeping Edgar Wright's vibe still and burning the midnight oil every night treating each writing session as the single objective writing exercise of the film like an Edgar Wright fan-fiction. They called it method writing pretending they were filtering all their creativity through the hypothetical filter of Wright's imagination.
This was a major controversy at the time. But, then the movie came out and was wonderful. And it was so quirky and small scale (as it were ) stakes and individualistic with its own vibe and sense of humor with just a dusting of Marvel sheen over it. Coming out the theatre, I remember our group saying that maybe Wright should have been open to a little collaboration in an arts medium that thrives on collaboration as there are many moving parts and talented people. I thought it was stubborn of Edgar not to be flexible with the Marvel inclusion. Did he or did he not collect comics as a boy? Because that was the cool thing Marvel was just starting to establish and pull off was the connectivity of a shared universe which mimicked in movie form the comic experience of reading Marvel as a kid. Payden and Rudd fit all that Marvel connective tissue so seamless and organically, Wright should have been the bigger man and admitted he was short sighted ( so to speak) and narrow minded. In hindsight, his leaving abruptly because Fiegi (sp) wanted to show him a tangible version and how it could work rather than all verbal and haphazard was also a diva move. He seems really, really sensitive. Even Weadon saw AntMan and wondered what all the fuss was considering it was still the majority of Edgar's structure and vibe left intact. I also hate that Wright fridged Janet Pym the original Wasp and just killed her off. Ugh! How lazy and inspired is that move? Can we stop killing the female lead or co-lead or any females overall as a knee jerk cookie cutter off handed way to give the male protagonist 'motivation?' It's the most pathetic form of storytelling and played out. I don't even think it's misogynistic. It's just immature and a sad ass bygone troupe that needs to just stay dead and buried. The dangled carrot of Janet possibly still being alive opened up so many story possibilities right there. So, I personally think Edgar got exposed and should've taken the experience as a learning opportunity. Instead, I believe he got even more hands on and unbendable which I think has restricted him and he's lost a little of what made his films feel so loose and free form even though they weren't. Now you can feel the mechanism behind every scene and shot. Weird. He seems totally self aware and down to Earth too. But, Hollywood makes everyone their own little self contained bubble boys with nothing but Yes, Men. I miss Weadon.

Honestly (and while I don't like the casting choice, I don't mean this as insulting): why? Why would you want Channing Tatum in that role? I am genuinely curious, and I've never received a better defense of it than "well, he might not mess it up more than Origins Wolverine did".
The first man Ant-Man was pretty okay. But looking back now, especially after its two lackluster sequels (and the current MCU as a whole), I wish we see how Wrights full version of the movie would've been.

Honestly I'm glad it didn't pan out. Hearing the changes described sounded like they were all for the better.
There is a way to subtlety connect the movies to the reset of the MCU. A news paper article the camera passes by, maybe there is a tech or stock segment on the TV talking about Stark industries.
This is one of those rare instances where I think the movie that was eventually made was probably better than what it would have been originally. If it had come out in Phase 1, as intended, it would have been OK I think, but by the time it was actually made it wouldn't have really worked. And it seems like Wright had no one to blame but himself. It sounds like he kept putting off starting Ant-Man in favor of other projects, so he kind of screwed himself. If he had prioritized making Ant-Man during Phase 1, Marvel would have let him go ahead and do what he wanted. But by the time he was ready, the MCU had developed a "house style" and there was really no room for any passion project type stuff anymore.
I love ant-man as it currently exists, but would have still been cool to see his vision for the character

I love the ant man movie as is and I also love that wright and I think the ultimate product would’ve come with marvels more connected scrip with Edgar’s style and humor.
The fact that the antman trilogy is one of the mcu's most forgettable trilogies means edgar Wright was kind of vindicated, I bet he's laughing at marvel now.

5:22. raise stakes and final obstacle to overcome
Antman could have come out after Avengers 2, but they could have set it before/during Ironman. (Antman didnt want anything to do with the Avengers after all)
they could have retconned it later that Antman tried to get to the Battle of New York but got there too late. (or, like the flash, he did show up you just didnt see him).
It wasnt until Avengers 2 where the world almost ended, that Antman realises he should join the big team of heroes.
I really hope Gunn has something that Wright would like to work on.

I think it would’ve been cool to see Simon Pegg as Ant Man, I think it would’ve been a lot more comical and more of a comedy then what we got. I think Paul Rudd is still great as Ant Man but I think Simon Pegg as Ant Man would’ve been cooled.
I bet it was Wright's influence that got The Cure's Plainsong into the final film. AWESOME moment in Ant-Man.
Hope James Gunn gets a chance to work with Edgar
Stuff like this really makes me wish marvel would consider making elseworld style movies for already established characters in the mcu. You could put any director and writer together as well as other potential actors and since it’s only an elseworld story it doesn’t affect the main time line. They could even potentially bring some of these characters back for secret wars.

It is still to this day upsetting to me that Wright didn't get to make his version of Ant-Man he is in my top 5 directors ever and i have no doubt his movie would have been great

Considering that the Ant-Man movie we got is really great, plus Wright’s Ant-Man means we wouldn’t have gotten either Scott Pilgrim or World’s End, I think everything worked out exactly as it should have.
I hope we get a video like this for Ant-Man 3 some day. If that movie hadn't had Kang shoehorned in, it could have been completely different.
Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is the only one I believe have gotten ant-man right. Hank Pym was a scientist, first and foremost. Everything else was secondary
As I'm not a huge Edgar Wright fan, I was worried when he said he was going to do Ant-Man. Ant-Man is my fav character and he is rather serious and dark, something Wright's films aren't. So ultimately I think the version we ended up with was the best of both worlds. It had a lot of the style of Wright with a better direction and fit of the MCU. Sadly though, the sequels Peyton Reed did as follow ups were really bland and I couldn't help but think maybe Wright's vision is what made that first movie as good as it was.

I like the movie we got quite a bit, and I like the smaller integrations into the MCU. When it's done right, it's really fun to know that they're in the same universe. Since the final film is fun to me I wonder less how it could have been, but this was still a fun movie.

Unquestionably the biggest mistake Marvel/Fiege made (which more and more is saying something).
This could have been one of the very best Marvel movies.
