    As someone who played botw, I thought that the tutorial did a good job of forcing me to use the new abilities, particularly ultrahand and ascend, instead of relying on the paraglider and 3 stamina wheels

    • @smsry
      @smsry Год назад +59

      I think it's just unfortunately unavoidable that the tutorial feels like a slog to BOTW players because we're so used to the core mechanics and if you've played BOTW you probably played it for upwards of 40 hours, and you're already used to having many hearts and stamina and the paraglider. And when you come to Tears, you loose all that for the sake of a new game, but the problem is the base game is basically the same, and the game forces you to relearn everything because it has to accomodate for new players. That's why it feels like a slog..
      A game where it actually works is somethin like God of War 2 and 3.. when you go from 2 to 3 you loose all the health and upgrades and what not at the start, but it never feels like you're ripped off or boring to go through the tutorial because the game's completely different with new levels and platforming designed for a completely new game.

      I have about 500 hours in botw and I fuckin loved the totk tutorial. I liked that it takes everything away. Does it feel not good to have no stamina.
      But because of that, you learn that you don't really need stamina to get around. You have so many other options and that's it teaches you.
      The first 20 hours or so was some of the most amazing ah ha moments I've ever had in games. I wouldn't rate totk as my favorite Zelda game, but holy fuck I had an amazing experience with it

  • @camwing
    @camwing Год назад +57

    I came into ToTK with over 200 hours sunk into BoTW, and one of my favorite things to do in the latter game was screwing around to see what the physics engine would let me get away with. So immediately after getting Ultrahand, I went out of my way to start stapling trees together to bypass as much of the level design as I could.
    It was obvious that you were supposed to go in a sort of counter-clockwise direction around the islands, which would naturally introduce you to all the mechanics you needed to learn along the way, and my approach of disregarding the designer's intended direction felt really empowering at first. I felt like "Oh yeah, I know Breath of the Wild, I get what they're going for," and I just did my own thing. It wasn't until I started a new save (so all I wanted to do was get off the islands as fast as possible) that I realized how much vital information I unintentionally skipped over.
    That's kinda the paradox of the freedom this game gives you. It wants you to be able to do your own thing whenever you want, but it also has a story that it wants to tell, and it tries railroading players into the direction they need to go. I've talked to a surprising number of people who accidentally went HOURS without the Paraglider because they thought "Eh, I'll do the main questline stuff later."

    As someone who played BOTW, I found the sky Island to be a good time. Very nice too since I hadn't played BOTW in years, so a lot of the skills I gained had rusted and needed to be relearned.
    One thing I will say that I noticed is that the sky island was more linear, imo compared to the great plateau. TOTK very much pushes you to the ultrahand shrine first, then fuse -> ascend -> recall, whereas the shrines on the great plateau can be done in basically any order. Playing it did feel a little wierd considering how open the rest of the game is.
    One last thing I'll mention is I'm not afflicted with Goopy Goblin Gamer Brain (tm) as much as others, so learning little story bits about the goat ghost (goatst?), the robo-homies, and the robo-not-homies was also fun for me.

I got really hooked on the exploration, it reminded me of playing Elden Ring, where I was so immersed in the world and wanted to explore all the places, find everything hidden, etc. So I actually really enjoyed the tutorial on the sky island and tried to explore everything there - the limited stamina and tools actually made it even better in my mind because you were forced to find solutions with ultrahand, ascend, or taking one of those wing gliders. I love how the world is full of things to find, sure, it's not always super good stuff, but through the fusion and cooking mechanics, I never felt any item was useless. And even if it's just a Korok under a rock, the incentive to explore is strong for me. That being said, a huge part of it for me is just seeing the world, and if I had played BOTW, I'm not sure how excited I would be to revisit the places in Hyrule that are more or less the same.
    Now I just want someone to take the best elements from Elden Ring and TOTK and fuse them into the best game ever made haha

    The great plateau and the starting sky island are some of my favourite memories from BotW and TotK. At some point you get a large enough stamina wheel to just jump up any cliff that you come across, or in TotK, you get enough parts/zoanite to make a vehicle to fly up. The start is where I feel my ability to solve problems in unique ways is put to the test. There aren't any really difficult parts, but I love seeing a higher island and thinking "Hm, I know I'm not supposed to be able to get up there, but I WILL get up there."
    Making long columns of trees stuck together that I thread through the geometry of the buildings to give myself a bridge to cross gaps, whatever it is, I find it extremely rewarding, and it's a level of challenge that I feel the further into the game you are the less you'll come across it.

After getting the quest to explore the different regions i started to grind shrines and the depths and it slowed my playthrough a ton, i barely played any maybe 1 or 2 hours a day at best and I was really bored really fast but then after doing enough i finally tackled the story and its definitely the better experience for me, but as i kept going into the story it also started to just feel off? The fact that there's regions locked by story or spoiled by story since you can view memories out of order, really hampered the experience imo. A lot feels like i was chasing the high of botw's first experience and it obviously can't stop it but it didn't even come close for me, the sky wasn't the most eye popping locals i thought it could be, the depths came close until you explore for more than an hour.

I enjoyed the shrines and some of the buildup or aftermath of the shrines, like trying to climb the snowy mountain, using the zonai gliders, and using the minecarts. The slowness was usually the inbetween, and I think it’s because it isn’t as hand holdy as BOTW’s tutorial by not marking where the shrines are. I didn't like the TOTK tutorial because not only is it long, but restrictive as all hell, but it also doesn't nearly give you as many tools
    I really hate how TOTKs tools are hidden behind fetch quest walls, it's insane
    For story + gameplay I adore Kid Icarus Uprising for the 3DS

    I loved the way I was encouraged to find my own way around it. like on the icy mountain up to the ascend shrine, I didn't wanna mess with making bridges across all the waterfalls, so I searched for a way to climb up and found it. outside of that, I think it does a great job of transitioning botw players into the mindset required for totk of making your own solutions to problems with these new abilities.

    Having played BOTW first, I was super excited to see what new stuff tears of the kingdom would introduce so I absolutely loved the tutorial area. It’s a completely new Zelda experience that feels like they’ve finally met the potential Skyward Sword’s introduced with its sky islands.
    Once you leave the area and the game becomes BOTW 2 I was a little disappointed, but I’m glad I got the experience I did for the intro area.

    I played breath of the wild, enjoyed it a lot. With this newer game i felt that the tutorial was not slow for me, maybe because im easily entertained but even though i knew i was limited compared to the end of the last game i still enjoyed the challange of trying to make goofy shit/enjoyable gameplay moments happen within the limits presented. Again maybe I'm just easily entertained or that i completed the tutorial over the span of a couple days which allowed me to not become bored, i did genuinely enjoy all of it.

    I’ve replayed BotW multiple times (it is my favorite game of all time. Used to be Wind Waker). I thought both tutorials were fantastic but idk…
    I guess there’s a switch that flips in my head when I get to tutorials where I want to learn and experiment in a little more of a controlled environment before everything is turned loose. I think I feel this bc it’s very easy for me to get overwhelmed if a game just drops me in and says “K bye!” And the tutorials for both of these games don’t necessarily feel like the info dump in most games. It feels like a part of progression (which I value heavily in games) even when I know how great life is with max stamina and paraglider.
    Just my thoughts. Loved listening to y’all chat about this amazing (in my opinion) game!!

    I liked BOTW enough when it came out but over the years I've sort of grown to hate it. As a long time Zelda fan, I really didn't like how much they took away from the Zelda formula like dungeons, music etc. This game though I think is incredible, it addressed a lot of the problems I had with BOTW and brought back some familiar Zelda elements that I loved. And honestly I still think my problems with BOTW are valid. Like has a Zelda game ever been completely replaced before? There is no need to go back to BOTW, TOTK is just that game but better in every way.
    And to answer your question about the tutorial, I really liked it. I spent a lot of time just messing around with the Ultrahand just to get a feel for it, and I think not having access to the paraglider kind of pushes players to do this.

    I would say that the ToTK tutorial did really well, except for drilling into my head just how often the ascend ability would come into play. I cant tell you how many times I came to an environment, or a shrine puzzle, and believed I was stuck, or that i had to build a way out of my predicament, only to remember a couple minutes later, that I had the ability to move directly up from where I was. Other than that, I would say the tutorial did a great job in hammering home the abilities given.

  • @arash4853

    as someone who played botw i really was entertained because of how you needed to use your abilities in the great island to reach other shrines.
    in botw the runes you get will only matter in the shrine but in totk for getting to the second shrine you should build something otherwise you couldn't and it help more to figure how the abilities work

    weirdly your discussion about the tutorial reminds me of how I felt when I first played OOT. I was maybe 10 years old and got really impatient with the intro in Kokiri Forest and jumped ship maybe even before I got the sword. Like 2 years later I came back to it on the fancy ass GameCube collectors edition and loved it. I haven’t played TOTK or BOTW yet (except very briefly at friend’s houses) but I can appreciate the frustration of wanting to break through into the game and find the magic of the game that has so many people enchanted. peace love n kiss jaquuuuuaaaaaaaaaaaan

    I've never played the Zelda titles before Ocarina of Time, but I have played every one since then. In this one I was far more interested in the new build mechanics. I also love how they put things in place that helped some of the pain points from the previous game. Like rain, you can make potions or get a suit. I also loved how you can glide everywhere using the towers, I barely used a horse. I just glided, plus when the the debris fall from the sky, I would almost always ran up to it to reverse time and glide.
    Overall i liked the game. I think the Temples were a little on the easy side compared to OOC or Twilight Princess. It feels more like an expansion pack than a sequel in a lot of ways, I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

    • @smsry
      @smsry Год назад +1

    I kind of like the part of botw/totk where you don't have all your abilities. It creates interesting problem solving opportunities like cutting down a tree to cross a ravine. Once you get the glider you can just glide across that ravine, and overcoming any obstacle becomes a bit mindless

    I love videos like this, and would definitely be interested in hearing your thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom once you finish that and the same goes for Final Fantasy 16.
    Not trying to defend it, but as someone who’s played FF14 for the last 2 years and is caught up on the story/expansions, they definitely take their time letting their story and characters get fleshed out and it’s not just because 14 is an MMO.
    It genuinely allows these big climactic and emotional moments build up properly so that there is an emotional payoff.
    That being said, I could totally understand the opening of the game being jarring to someone who isn’t used to this team or just isn’t interested, especially the part about walking a little bit and then getting a cutscene.
    The good thing is that you can skip the cutscenes if you so please :)

Just turning the camera on and talking naturally in a way that's genuine but generally unplanned, about certain things but no real solid point or final conclusion. A casual discussion - like a podcast, but instead just it's own simple thing. I'm not a massive fan of the whole parasocial relationship thing youtube creates but this does feel like a relaxing chat that I'd have with some friends or my brother. I wondered since you did mention the comments if you'd ever make a discord or something where people could discuss stuff, i know that takes moderating and annoying shit like that, i guess the comment section is already perfect for discussion.

I kept forgetting I didn't have the paraglider for the first hour or so, which forced me to use ascend and ultrahand to build bridges and use zany ass ways to gain height. getting players to look up in games is notoriously hard, but ascend gave me an extra option of verticality which is super cool!!!

    i did every possible side quest in the game, every shrine, korok, and cave. finally finished the other night and i was so emotional. the ending to botw always underwhelmed me, but the whole last hour of tears had me bawling. its genuinley so beautiful and im starting to tear up now. sure there are flaws, but they dont matter at all when i think of this game and how it makes me feel. i wish i could experience it again for the first time

    I actually enjoyed the slow nature of the game's start. It felt very organic, with Link basically going caveman and working his way back to his normal status. This is something other games have toyed with: how does Link become Link? But it was always very quick and then you were in a silly tunic. This game felt to me very immersive.
    And I also like how everyone in the world remembers who you are. No one seems to forget that you saved the world only a few years earlier.
