Honestly I feel the biggest thing by far that holds TOTK back is how much it wants to copy BOTW in terms of gameplay but wants to disconnect with BOTW in terms of story.
Copying the shrines, temple order, story structure, combat, enemies, UI, items, and unlockables to be nearly identical from BOTW makes the game feel way less unique and fresh.
But at the same time, the game weirdly never wants to reference BOTW in the story at any cost.

And when we finally get a chance to have the Zonai fleshed out… they aren’t. There are Rauru and Mineru and we learn very little about what the Zonai were like from them. And now Nintendo said they don’t plan on making DLC so I guess the Zonai will go down as a forgotten species in the Zelda games, unless they’re brought back in future titles.

The fuse UI is actually insane, I don’t know how it met Nintendo’s standards when they were doing play testing for game feel. I like that you have to craft things in real-time, but a real-time crafting menu that you had to navigate during gameplay would have accomplished the same goals, and would have made it infinitely quicker and more efficient to make weapons and shields. And arrows, my god, this was the dumbest implementation they could have thought of. Why can’t I just craft arrows in anticipation of a fight like I do with my weapons and shields? Maybe then you could have a limited number of different fused-arrow slots that you could upgrade using Korok seeds. Or hell, just the ability to pin five or six materials instead of having to have it be sorted by “Most Used” would have made me feel way more in control of my experience. I love the idea of the fuse mechanic, but it’s implementation is just needlessly cumbersome.

The "climbing in the rain" situation is undeniably improved in TotK. The additions of the froggy armor and slip resistance elixirs are great. The trick is to leap right before you think you're going to slip. You're not going to want to climb huge cliffs this way, but it's at least something. The upgraded froggy set even gives full slip immunity, though that's a late game thing.
And of course, you don't even need to climb as much as in BotW. There are so many alternative ways of getting elevation: ascend, recalling a fallen rock, rocket shields, hot air balloons, and any other flying vehicles.

...I didn't know you couldn't leave the approach to Ganondorf, but I should have realized this. I noticed that I wasn't able to put down a travel medallion. Luckily I was over-prepared, but still. My main complaint about TOTK honestly is how useless the sages are in both gameplay and story. They were great in their respective temples, but outside of that? Maybe if their abilities were on the rune wheel, but it just wasn't worth it for me to walk to up most of them to do a small attack. Tulin is the main exception as he's a fantastic mobility tool. Sidon is a special case in that he's useful for the Zora spear, and...that's it. If I want explosions, I have bomb flowers. If I want a lightning blast, I have shock fruit and yellow chu chu jelly. If I want to slowly walk around and use Zonai devices? I don't, but I could fuse them to my shield. And then the sages' powers are just...unavailable during the finale at all. Their avatars disappear, and while they do show up to help take out some trash mobs and distract the temple bosses...that's basically it? First phase Ganondorf they're not there, second phase they're only there for part of it and then they get knocked the fuck out for the rest of the finale. So....what did they do? Why did Link need their help?

I was really hoping that the story would keep me coming back for more in TotK but honestly it was just as frustrating as the rest of the game was for me. Not only does it seem shallow and has a lackadaisical plot but Zelda kinda just let everything happen. She went down deep in the chasms of Hyrule castle, saw murals of the past, took pictures, physically saw the mummified corpse who even mentioned Rauru's name, and when she gets transported back to the past and she doesn't say anything to the people who hold a resemblance to said murals? She can't put two and two together that Ganondorf is responsible for the Calamity? Especially when she sealed Calamity GANON for 100 years! I was so mad that when Sonia got killed then she wanted to warn Rauru? Umm too late for that pointdexter. I just... it blows my mind and I'm even more astonished that people are like not even aware of this and still claim the story is better in TotK. I'm not a huge fan of BotW's story but, at least it tried to make sense of what happened and the theme of moving forward and be open to change, accepting your failures yada yada. Ganondorf with 4 stones there's no stopping him

Your telling me that im supposed to go off to find Zelda? I already know where she is. Why does nobody acknowledge that link knows EXACTLY what happened to zelda. Even if they had it so if you completed the memories the focus shifted to gathering the difrent tribes to tey and save zeld, but no. Where is Zelda? Shes not herself anymore

The thing is though, is even though you have those memories, there still is another 'Zelda' that you physically see wandering modern hyrule. Maybe Link is just as confused and trying to figure out what is going on, and finding this 'modern' Zelda is the key. Telling everyone else she died to become a giant dragon would just cause chaos in the kingdom.

I was very disappointed in the story because everything feels like it is not well connected and as if they left all ideas halfway.
Link practically does not participate in anything, all of its dungeons could have been overcome by the chosen ones alone without Link's help, Zelda was in another completely separate story of the main game and Ganondorf did the same shit as in Oot and the icing on the cake We lost the opportunity forever to see Link use the fucking stone of the sages and balance the scales with Ganon, it could have been something like the Fierce Deity, the whole story of Ganon and Zelda is about the stones and Link, the protagonist, doesn't even touch one unlike, the ocarina, the wolf/beast form, the triforce, the masks, de four swords, etc.!
And also they decided to make the final battle exactly the same as fighting a Moblin.
All of this coming from a person whose favorite franchise is Zelda, loved botw and played hundreds of hours of it and was very excited with the arrival of Totk
I just think they bit off more than they could chew. And by trying so many things they ended up with a game that wants to be many things and ends up being a game that doesn't understand itself.

I think my biggest problem with the story in TOTK is how the story already happened, and there's very little that Link himself actually does in it despite Zelda saying he is the one who will save everyone. All Link does in Totk is talk to people, kill a few monsters, and then take out Ganon, and it doesn't feel like he actually had an impact on the world. In Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker, Link has more responsibility and actually affects the course of the story and the lives of the people in the world. I think MM and TP did that part the best. In Botw, the fact that the story happened in the past was actually pretty cool because you could see the results of the Calamity on Hyrule. Many places are decimated, and you see the people slowly picking up the pieces and moving on, which helped drive home one of Botw's main themes: Moving forward and creating something new. The world in Totk doesn't have that same satisfying demonstration of cause-and-effect. Outside of the 4 major quests, the world feels more or less indifferent about what has happened, if they are even aware in the first place.

What we got was: Ganondorf fucks off at the beginning of the game and you don't see him again until the end of the game. The meat of the story happens in the past, with no influence on the world except "exposition dump"

I’m sorry but the world being indifferent to the upheaval and Link’s actions is entirely wrong and you must simply be misremembering the game. Ofc there are the obvious main 4 quests but outside of that the great fairies are disturbed and you have to rebuild a musical troupe in order to bring them back out. The korok forest is entirely zombified all the way down into the depths which you help heal. Pirates have taken over eventide and lurelin, the latter which you help physically rebuild which is rewarded with the villagers gratitude and special treatment. You help a group of warriors led by Hoz to take out large monster camps to bring peace to hyrule. All of the stable quests involve helping the locals and finding clues about Zelda’s whereabouts and actions, and it’s a nice mix up of the misdoings of puppet Zelda and the kind acts of the real Zelda aiding the people. You help with local town politics, the school, and the garden in Hateno village. You help Mattison and her parents during the buildup to her departure to Gerudo town which leads to one of the most heartfelt moments in the series. This is all off the top of my head there were plenty more like it throughout the game. Plenty of things to dislike ToTK for but I don’t think the world being indifferent is one of those reasons, it’s arguably one of the game’s best aspects.

What I found annoying is that the tear number doesn’t coincide with the cutscene number. So tear #2 could be cutscene #6. And even when you _do_ follow the path the game pushes you towards (I think Wind > Fire > Lightning > Water dungeons), the tears along that trek still are random. You’d have to find a guide that actually tells you which tear is which cutscene to figure out what order it is to unlock them chronologically. But you’re not gonna do that on your first time and risk spoiling the story or other aspects, so you just experience a mess.
I didn’t find cutscene #1 until over 200 hours in. I thought it was done that way because it was some huge revelation to the story. Not really. You’re told you can both repair the Master Sword and strengthen it further. But given Ganon broke it already, something obviously had to give to win. And it’s not like knowing this beforehand would’ve ruined the surprise of Zelda becoming a dragon. That was already foreshadowed multiple times. I mean, when it was first mentioned to Zelda she didn’t even reject it as an option, and then turn around later. She never dismissed it as an option, just other people. So in the same scene it was mentioned it her lack of negative reaction basically foreshadowed “she’s obviously going to do it later”.

The problem too is that even if you are very story driven and go memory hunting immediately in botw, the game forces you to space it out with gameplay as you need to explore in order to find any of the landmarks in the pictures. And as exploration is the core of the game, you get a seamless and well-paced blend of story progression and game progression-explore a new area, find a new memory; it works.
But with totk, instead you get these massive geoglyphs that are just impossible to ignore, you can EASILY find most of them within the first few hours. And because people are like “oh look a shiny interesting thing that stands out golly” they’ll speed through the story in the first 10% of their total playtime which just feels…clunky from a pacing perspective alone.
From a story perspective, it’s just…terrible for all the reasons y’all already said.

I hate...HATE... the slippery elixirs and the Froggy set. The anti-slip elixirs DON'T EVEN PREVENT YOU FROM SLIPPING! Even the high-level elixirs! WHAT'S THE POINT!! The ONLY way to get a no-slip upgrade is to do all the Goddang Lucky Clover Gazette quests to get the full Froggy set and to then upgrade the Froggy set twice at a Great Fairy Fountain, which also requires you to do at least two of the Stable Trotters quests, which means going and finding the displaced band members around the map, which is way too damn much legwork for an armor set that is CRUCIAL for exploring caves and Lanayru and Faron and Akkala and Central Hyrule where it rains every twenty frikkin' minutes and where the walls are always wet (and also for the Thunderhead Isles questline where it never stops raining)
Also the arrow fusing. FFffffffuuuuuuck the arrow fusions. Please just let me do like Minecraft where I craft a bundle of like 100 Keese Eyeball arrows and 50 Bomb Flower arrows and 50 ice/fire/shock arrows, and have those in a separate subscreen of pre-crafted arrows, instead of having to reload the same fuse material for EVERY GODDANG SHOT, which is especially annoying when you use arrows as much as I do
    re: TotK's story
This might just be because I'm on my second playthrough and have seen all the memories and Imprisoning War cutscenes already, but what I'm noticing is how exposition-heavy every single cutscene is. We're not allowed to make inferences and work out how this character or bit of dialogue fits into the greater narrative; we're TOLD how it fits, by the characters themselves. Sonia straight-up telling us that she and Zelda share a blood connection; Ganondorf telling us what's happening to him while Rauru is sealing him; the Sages telling us the SAME story FOUR times (five times if you count Mineru); Zelda having flashbacks to exposition from other cutscenes when she realizes that she'll have to become a dragon to get back to her own time, which is DIRECTLY tied to the game's openworld formula (Nintendo knew that players would find the Tears out of order so they had to include the flashbacks to other memories so players wouldn't be totally lost when they found Memory 11 first, but they ALSO do this in the true ending where Zelda flashes back to the ancient Sages swearing fealty to Rauru, as if the players don't understand that this moment is a mirror of a moment we've definitely already seen because to even GET this cutscene we need to have found all the Tears!). Plus, like, if you do like I did on my first playthrough and find all the Tears first, the Regional Phenomena just get annoying after a while because we KNOW that that's not the real Zelda because the real Zelda is a GODDANG DRAGON. It would've been a WAY better and more coherent story if the geoglyphs had been locked and the Tears unattainable until AFTER we had completed the Regional Phenomena quests; we don't know where Zelda is, we go to the four regions and see her acting weird, we go back to the castle and find out she was a Phantom all along, Purah sends us to meet Impa at New Serenne Stable, and THEN the geoglyphs are unlocked and we can now find out what REALLY happened to Zelda. This would've made the game a lot more linear than BotW but dangit it would've improved the mystery and suspense so much

All the hills on the surface are valleys in the depths and vice versa, Even the lightroots are in the same places as the shrines from the surface. This is what gives the feeling of them being 'auto-generated'. Okay, I just realized the reason they probably don't let players give Link a custom name, and I don't think it has anything to do with storytelling or immersion, it's because of the VOICE ACTING. Locking him to one name, 'Link', was their only option if they didn't want to remove every utterance of his name and/or give him a bunch of nicknames. (which isn't an issue in the previous text based games, where voice acting was mainly for sound effects)

one of my biggest issues with totk's story is zelda's arc, because its like, objectively flawed from a writing perspective. her story starts out with establishing a new mysterious power she has, and the narrative acts as if we're gonna explore that further. but then as soon as the master sword gets brought to the past, all of that setup for her new time powers gets COMPLETELY dropped, and the focus is entirely on restoring the master sword and zelda turning into a dragon. her plot starts off as "she activated a new power she didnt know she had, but it sent her back to the past. she now has to master said power in order to get back to the present" and it ends with "shes going to eat this magic rock and turn into a dragon to become immortal and restore the master sword". its so much weaker than her arc in botw because its basically the top and bottom half of 2 different plot ideas stitched into one. also idk it feels like theyre trying to one-up her sacrifice in botw, with how nightmarish they made the dragonification process. it felt super forced to me tbh

@rifatbobos i was really hoping totk would be more present and future focused, to contrast botw's focus on the past, but no they just decided to go even farther into the past instead. it didnt feel like they were trying to create a new compelling sequel, it felt like they were trying to recreate the story of botw but with like, more stakes i guess???? idk i could complain about totk's plot forever

Same for me except the part at the end, this is nowhere near greatest game of all time. Botw was amazing, probably my 2nd favorite game I've ever played, but tears was just meh. It feels like the same map, same enemies, same characters, same story structure (but done worse), with some "big" additions like the sky islands and depths that are really just empty. The abilities are one of the only redeeming factors of the game but don't make up for all the other bad stuff. I still play it for the same reason I kept playing botw, to explore the world, discover places I haven't seen before, do random quests, and this is the only time besides the beginning I've rally enjoyed it, even though I could basically do the same things in botw. This game should have been better.

@@IceYetiWins I enjoyed BotW more too. To be clear, I do think TotK is amazing in its scope, and there's a lot to like about it. But I think the thing I agree with the most with Scott's video is the "clunk" part. In BotW, the exploration felt a lot smoother and more natural, to me at least. In TotK, the main thing is that I honestly get tired of piecing things together constantly. I get that Ultrahand is amazing, but it really feels like it slows the game down in some ways. My main gripe is: TOO MUCH POWER. You see.... There really is something special about that first playthrough of BOTW that I don't quite think TOTK managed to match. And I think it's because BOTW with all the freedom it gave to you, also restricted you in a way that every achievement felt very satisfying. It made you proud every time you climbed a mountain. I remember reaching the top of Dueling Peaks and feeling like the best thing I've ever done in a videogame. But then you pick TOTK, you build a motorbike with two fans and ... ¡BOOM! You're on top of Hyrule Castle in two minutes. I felt too overpowered in TOTK to feel proud of my achievements... that's why I keep BOTW a little bit closer to my heart than TOTK.

I ALSO thought that the game would have been better if it just. Followed Zelda? There's basically nothing going on with Link other than "huh, I wonder what Zelda's doing" and she did all the actual plot things somewhere else.
