The "sputter" at start up is unique to John Deere construction equipment. It is part of the cold start package. The motor gets extra fuel during cold starts and then adjusts the fuel as it warms. We have a brand new 329E and a new 35d and they both do the same thing.
All those white chuffs are the result of incomplete cylinder combustion due to the combustion chamber being cold. When the combustion chamber isn't warm enough the unburnt fuel is carried through into the exhaust manifold where it is then inefficiently burnt resulting in the white smoke. As the combustion chamber warms up through the heat from intermittent combustion and the heat generated by the compression of the air fuel mixture the combustion becomes more efficient and occurs in the chamber. I've always loved how the Deere engines have done that. The old 40 series tractors. We used to have a 4640 back when I was a kid. Used to love the way they start up and rev and then back off.You need to put a rain cap on that pipe Wez. Love the videos keep up the good work.

My JD skid steer has a glow plug light on the dash. It takes about 30 seconds for the plugs to heat up. There is very little exhaust smoke if I wait for the plugs to heat up. A coffee can, although probably not needed, covering the exhaust pipe would bring a smile to some folks.
Skidsteers are si cool. So compact it is easy to drive into garages, storage facilities, barns etc and go get what you want. Can't work as high up as frontloaders or telehandlers I guess. But skidsteer is such a neat simple design. First time I ever saw one it was used while building skyscrapers. They drive around on each floor shifting goods. I don't know how it made it to the agriculture industry.
+MajSolo wouldnt want to learn to drive a skidsteer on the 24th floor of some non finished high rize and if i was i would stay whell away from the edges
Two things. One is a heat shield where that fold is. I have a concern of radiation heat coming off the fold and igniting the black insulation. The second item is that the end of the exhaust should either have a rain flapper on it or a rounded end like tractors have so that rain does not drop straight down that stack and fill the manifold.
WOW Wes! We have a 2006 John Deere 320 skid steer, with 2000 hours, but it doesn't puff like that! We switched to 100% soy oil right after we bought it (new) and it not only puffs less smoke, but it is A LOT quieter! We switched it to regular diesel once, huge difference! Instant noise & smoke cloud, and couldn't wait to get back to the B-100!
Sounds awesome! If it didn't have a turbo you couldn't stand how loud it would be!! The turbo helps muffle the sound. For fun make a video showing the difference between a muffler removal on a natural aspirated Diesel engine.
hey Wes that CT-332 actually sounds pretty good ,,it's got a nice throaty growl accompanied by the turbo whistle my cummins powered ford ranger sounds very similar because i have a 3 inch exhaust ,, but that 5 cylinder definitely has a different sound,,mine turns into an angry bumble bee growl at about 2000rpm with just a slight turbo sound ,,2600 and it's all turbo ,,and i wish it wouldn't smoke so much ,, the damned thing rolls coal when you put your foot in it ,, only thing i have been able to figure out is this motor was in a bread truck and it was tuned to pull more than the 3800 pounds my little truck weighs ,, i know it will pull my 18ft car trailer with 2 tons on it and not struggle on hills ,,it really belches black then ,, and i even turned the fuel way down on the injector pump ,,it's got the rare P-7100 injection pump ,,didn't help it ,except to increase gas mileage which went from 35 - 41
I did the exact same thing on our 2007 Case skidsteer for the exact same reasons 4 years ago. Its still running great 5000 hours later without a muffler

If you still have the ct332. Go to John deere and ask for the update kit for the A/C evaporator. Some reason the engineers at deere when these were built didn't design a mounting system for the evaporator/condenser (some call it.) So it bounces around in the top and breaks the Copper lines. The heater core is beside it but it's mounted but the evaporator is not. Piss poor design
A lot of turbo charged engines start like that till the turbo starts to spool up and gets the compression up. This was especially noticeable on the older trucks with turbos when they were pulling out from a stop.
From what I've learned is when you see that its noting bad its actually normal because its the glow plug relay kicking on and off like it should cold. Could be wrong but its what I was taught
I've always ran and prefer to run Bobcat. Plenty of HP when you need it, plenty of hydraulic power when you need it as well. Also, if my memory serves correctly, now they only company that still offers both, hand control or foot control operation. Majority has all switched over to strictly hand control operation.
Bobcat is the most over rated skidsteer there is!! They are weak compared to other brands. WEAK! This thing would out lift, out push, out muscle a Bobcat of similar size everyday. Ive used a Deere 323CT to pick up and carry rocks that a Bobcat T250 wouldn't budge! This CT332 has 13500 of hydraulic break out force in the bucket curl cylinders!! The next highest was the Case 465 series III with 9000 n change. The only thing Bobcat has is comfort and smoothness. Oh and I have been in a 2018 Deere 330G skidsteer with selectable controls. Hand and foot pedals, H pattern hand or ISO pattern hand. All 3 patterns at the flip of a switch. Bobcat, owned by Doosan... going down hill. The old Ingersoll Rand Bobcat were built better
As wes says the new exhaust pipe in not directly conected to the exhaust from the turbo. The new pipes sleeved with an air gap all around. thats why there is smoke out the back. the gap will also ensure no water will find its way back to the turbo. Dunno why you have done this though wes?? please explain. Thanks for the vids.
I've enjoyed many of your "fix-it" videos and this one is no exception. I'm the same way because if I can make something work well (sometimes better) and still avoid some over-inflated price for the fix that cash stays where it belongs, in our own damn pockets!
glow plugs are cycling when the engine is cold smoke is from cylinders being cold enough that fuel does not ignite properly. it would probably run better cold if they changed the on time for the glow plugs.

I did not know that! I gather you had to take the steps you took in order to protect your livelyhood and your channel, and couldn't inform everyone about the channel change. Thats the lowest of the low in my book - malicious damage, there's absolutely NO point to it at all. and WELL done whoever did it, you didn't make anyone laugh and all you did was cause expense and hardship to a battling farmer who is trying to make some videos to entertain other people when he has some time on the side. my 328 deere does the same thing when I start it up n the deere guys told me it's a bad injector but I run Lucas injector cleaner in it n that helps a bunch that it does run so rough n watching video I mite take the muffler off mine too !

The cold start advance linkage in the governor tends to get sticky in the 4024 & 5030 engines. We used to have customers complain about it all the time, not a lot can be done about it except replacing all of the governor linkage and injectors.
+CubCadet129 I believe all ct332's had the mechanical 5030 unless they started putting the electronic ones in late model machines just before the switch to D series machines
+onelonleyfarmer You are certain that you are not setting yourself up for condensation on your open exhaust valve ? (I am referring to when the engine is cold but the outside air is warm and moist. You have removed a thermal barrier,along with a noise barrier)

More power, higher turbo pressures = ??? more heat somewhere...do you have sufficient heat gauges in key areas to monitor the effects. More power at the expense of a needing a new engine isn't worth it....doing stuff the engineers don't approve of makes me nervous. Even if it's not a melt down in the near future how will it affect long term engine life and maintenance costs.
+tazmun I dunno man, I don't reckon its too much of a concern. Removing the muffler shouldn't give the engine any more torque or hp. It will reduce the restriction in the exhaust which will in turn allow better flow and should reduce the heat build up in the turbo and manifold. It will allow the turbo to spool up sooner that will make the machine get to max rpm faster under load. I don't know if you would notice a difference in the hydraulic power or hydro drive of the machine through.
mine dont smoke but the engine is getting hot when running a hi flow skid pro brush cutter and thing i can do. all seem to be clean water pump workin new thermostate thanks for info if any

We used to dairy with 328s, I miss those old school loaders... The D series were alright, but dad traded for 333D and its a dog, blows black smoke I don't like it

I think its the compture cutting the glow plugs in and out for emissions powerstrokehelp was taling about that on the 7.3's and mine does it

Land Rover series diesels do the intermittant smoke thing untill warmed up when the timing chains have streched a bit.

the spit and sputer of smoke is so that it can get all of the old disel or what ever type of fuel it has out to let the fuel in the tank be sucked in.

thats the glow plugs cycling on and off, thats why the smoke goes white then clear

That smoke could be the glow plugs kicking on and off until it warms up.
It’s not the computer, it’s the type of fuel system these machines use. Crank up to high idle on initial start up then they’ll back down

I don't doubt you notice more power, manufacturers build restrictors into the exhaust system to limit horsepower.
So does removing the muffler really give you more power to move the hydraulics faster?

How did you bypass the seat switch and seatbelt switch to start the motor with no one in the cab?

The plastic shroud on the electric cooling fan in there is melted and hanging down. Wow, I've never seen that.
It is interesting how it smokes, pops and spits till it warms up. I cannot offer any suggestion as to why.

We have a 5225 John Deere with the five cylinder turbo, it does the same thing. All those five cylinders do that.

Is that smoke blue or white? If it's blue it could be leaky valve stem seals, I have an old Toyota FJ60 that does the exact same thing.

Should drain out the funnel, remember the pipe from turbo goes into a funnel on the stack, so it has a gap all around near the corner.
Put a flapper on the pipe in case it rains
