      To be honest, from the look of the oil in most of the mowers he works on people aren't generally ever changing oil anyway - so no need to recommend it, really.

    I worked at a small engine repair shop about 25 years ago. Even then the owner told me that his competition was a $99 mower from whatever big box stores were around. We had a $59 service special on your typical Briggs push mower which included changing the oil, pulling the blower housing, blowing the dust out, sharpening the blades, cleaning or replacing the air filter, carburetor diaphragm, spark plug, and head gasket. While the head was off, we decarboned it and lapped and adjusted the valves. Was about an hour and a half of labor and about $10 in parts at the time. After this treatment they would usually run like new. This was in the days before overhead valve engines, and breaker points were still around on older mowers we saw.
    We had a quick test to see if repairing an old mower was viable, we turned it over with the spark plug disconnected and spun it backwards. If the engine offered no resistance backing up the power stroke, or the crankshaft was bent, we told the customer not to bother. Other things that usually totalled old mowers were problems with the self propelled mechanism, and rusted out decks.
    In the day we also had to deal with the valve seats on the Briggs engines popping out. It was a warranty repair, and the official fix was to reinsert the valve seat, and use a center punch to punch divots around the edge of the seat to expand the metal. I learned a lot from him, even though I had been repairing mowers on my own since I was a kid.

    • @MrTruckerf
      @MrTruckerf 4 года назад +4

      The punch method is called staking, and I have used it on many different applications. Basically anything you don't want to move, stake it.

    I have the identical mower. I changed the oil after the first season and it was glittery with metal. Then changed it again at the 3rd season, it was barely dark and had almost no metallic glitter. Briggs claims to have made some changes to the engine to lengthen the life of the oil (2800 vs 3600rpm, better air filtration to catch dirt, better oil cooling, tighter manufacturing tolerances) but I am still going to change the oil to get the debris out. I have no doubt it will die an earlier death with no oil changes, but I know plenty of neighbors who never change, check OR add oil, so it seems all the marketing in the world can't teach idiots to care for their stuff.

When I got it cleaned up and put back together I used the first trick I learned on your channel. First I used your test for the float valve Blow into fuel inlet, carb upright and then carb upside down. It wasn't sealing tightly. The second trick I learned from you was the Q-tip with polishing compound in the seat. Polished it a bit and problem solved. Thanks again Mustie1 Your channel is the best thing on RUclips.

    I used to be a repair center for a product that was in a plastic case. An old friend taught me this trick and I'll pass it on to you for your consideration. When you are returning a screw into a plastic there are threads already cut in the plastic. As plastic ages it becomes brittle, so if the screw tries to cut a new thread path, it can crack the plastic. To prevent this, turn the screw backwards with slight pressure on it until you hear or feel a click. This is when the threads on the screw are aligned with the threads in the plastic, now you can turn the screw to the right and the screw it will use the existing threads, no undue pressure on the plastic so no cracking. HTH. Good video.

    • @vincentrobinette1507
      @vincentrobinette1507 4 года назад +2

      I agree 100%. I used to repair vacuum cleaners for a living, and to be able to service it again and again, it really helps, of the screws find the original threads each time. That helps to avoid stripping out, or breaking/cracking the screw towers from repeated disassembly and reassembly. I also try to avoid over-tightening, but in the case of a lawnmower, you have to make sure they're tight enough, that the vibration doesn't cause them to loosen.

    • @MeatLeBeef
      @MeatLeBeef 4 года назад +3

      Honestly, I thought everyone did that, lol. I always do it, because when the plastic is soft and you just turn it, it'll chew up the hole over time and the screw will just spin through.
      I noticed that with the car I recently got - the workshops didn't care and two of the screws don't tighten any more, because the hole is just gone.
      All in all it's a good idea to do for any screw to prevent cross-threading.

    Funny you say that about the well to do towns. When I worked on a garbage truck I was always finding lawnmowers in the richer neighborhoods they were just throwing away. Sometimes they were like new and nothing wrong with them, sometimes it was something simple to fix like cleaning the carb. I had close to a dozen mowers I got that way that I sold for cheap or gave to people who needed them. After all I didn't have a dime sunk into any of them.

      Not just rich, but maybe they're more culpable. I do the same with box fans. Get them out of dumpsters (I don't go looking...) Usually they're gunked up - minimal clean and a little oil...will run for years more, I now have 6, all free. My latest was absolutely clean but had a broken blade. Funnily enough I bought the drive I needed for the self propelled from someone who went to their closing down auction. So my Rover mower will be self propelled again. I have owned it for 10 ten years. I am in USA, and still loyal to the Rover mower brand. I also own 2 Rover cars!

    I had a neighbor that had bought a new mower and the piston locked up. He asked me to look at it and I did. He had put a new blade on it and tilted the mower up so that the cylinder was facing downward. I removed the spark plug, pulled the cord and oil spurted out. The oil had drained into the cylinder. I drained out as much oil as possible, cleaned the plug, reinstalled the plug, refilled the oil and it started right up. It smoked, but that went away after the oil burned out. Then he tells me the reason for the new mower is that the old mower did the same thing after changing the blade. I fixed that one too. It's hard sometimes to find people that are mechanically inclined.

    It amazes me how little some people know about the most basic of all petrol-driven machines- the humble lawn mower. I was given a venerable Briggs 375 mower with identical blade to that here. The bloke who gave it to me said it just didn't want to run. I cleaned out the carb, made a new air filter out of some foam I had floating around the garage, put in nice clean oil, new spark plug and wow! The thing has run sweetly ever since, always starting on the second pull!

    Mustie you should show people about reading the sticker on the side of the gas tank. It tells you how long the engine will perform according to emissions. They rate it for hours until it wears out. If you read these labels it will tell you how disposable it is. Each engine from Briggs will have its own rating. The longer it lasts before it is wore out is a good way to tell if it is worth spending more money on a different model. I was surprised to find how different the ratings were for different models of chain saws from the same manufacturer .

While I don't actually remember if I found the procedure in the owners manual or online, I simply turned the mower on it's side and drained the oil out of it while I took care of other projects, come back a while later and fill it with new oil. I ended up selling it with a trailer, zero turn and a cheap weed eater and blower as a package.

    I drive a roll-off truck for the county landfill and it's crazy how many mowers are thrown in the 20 and 40 yard metal cans at the convenience centers on a daily basis,
    I have seen around 12-15 lawn mowers in three cans at one particular center, some look as though the owners got their moneys worth out of them but many look less than a year old
    or practically new.
    Also thrown away are weed eaters,chain saws,generators,air compressors etc.
    Many look like they could start right up. (the majority probably just need a good carburetor cleaning)
    It's sad that we are such a throw away society,also sad is the fact that our landfill policy states once they go in the can they stay there, no scavenging, we haul them to the metal recycling company
    where they are scrapped.

      My Dad just got rid of his 1969 3.5hp Briggs and Straton push mower last year. He knows he could have kept the engine going great, but the deck itself was pretty much toast, and it had been painted (by him) about 4 times over its life. I was hoping he'd have kept it a little longer, but he just downsized to a place where all he really needs is a weed eater, so he got a (well) used Sunbeam electric mower that looks like it came from about 10 years before the gas powered one he just parted with. That's my Dad... traded "down" to something better. Unbelievable.

    When I was a kid in the late 70s early 80s, my dad had a briggs and straten and he didn't change the oil for 11 years. He just kept adding oil. It would still run but every time I had to use it, it filled the whole yard with smoke because the rings were shot. But it still ran. I always thought that was impressive. After he died, my mom sold it to the yard maintenance company she was hiring and they honed it and put a new set of rings and it ran great. It was one of the old 3.5 HP models with no safety stuff so you didn't have to hold anything on the handle to keep it running. I think it was Wards or Sears.

    Well done fixing up that mower. Finding assemblies that have been put together incorrectly is a problem. And lack of maintenance for yard equipment. My house has a few concrete paths, and the driveway, so I bought a second hand Little Wonder lawn edger - about 4 years ago. Has the BS 3 1/2 horse 127cc engine. Previous owner demonstrated that it started and ran. Dismantled the carb and air filter. Carb was good after some compressed air. Foam air filter disintegrated. Spark plug still had white paint on it: most likely from the factory. Drive belt for the cutting blade was frayed, and probably original. Blade was worn out. Replaced all these parts with new. Changed the oil. The BS has 2 fillers and sump plugs. Found the date stamp on the engine: June 1984. Still using it today. Starts second or third try from cold.
