So I have enjoyed your videos for several months now. Funny story happened recently. A friend of mine had a mower stop working and he was frustrated. He told me that he has 3 lawn mowers than dont work. I asked if he wanted to part with them. He said he really wanted his main one working but that I could have the other two. So I fixed his main one and got two others as payment. Your videos made it possible for me to know how. So thank you can helping me accidentally start repairing mowers for friends.

Joe Coffman at Monroe High in Washington State was the best guy for teaching these things. Literally a shop teacher with three fingers on his right hand. He taught small gas engine repair and farm power mechanics. I was leaps and bounds ahead of my contemporaries when I went to Tech. school to become a mechanic. You can't just be a parts replacer if you are working on antique tractors. Parts are not available. Sometimes had to fabricate our own.

You’re an inspiration to the rest of us wannabe DIYER’S. I have an older Craftsman which is a rear wheel drive 21” mower and the best mower I’ve ever owned. I’m hoping to use it in place of the newer push mower. Thank you for your great videos and cheerful dialogue which gives me a lot of encouragement! I tipped the mower and found the blade was bent so bought a new one and will install it. Hope it starts after hitting that 2” stump and runs okay.

When you would point this out the two side by side, they were the same except for the price and color. Toro was over a $100.00 dollar difference and some times more. I would point this out to the customer and they would buy the JC Penny's Penn-craft model. Guess what, I did not make a dime on sales, but made my Boss look good. Another minor victory for this amateur mechanic. I bought this mower at the Kessler BX in 1983. It is Jacobsen predecessor to this style mower. Used it to mow yards in Mississippi, Maryland, Kansas, and San Antonio. Several years ago it stopped working and would stall after starting. After a while I took it to a mower repair shop. They finally gave up claiming they could not find the carburetor diaphragm needed. Brought it home and took it apart and found Briggs and Stratton engine code on block. Googled a site with parts listing for the many hundreds of engines B&S made. Found and ordered the correct diaphragm. The carburetor sits on the diaphragm on top opening in gas tank. Uses compression pressures to move diaphragm and push gas from gas tank into carburetor. Reassembled, adjusted carburetor and it works! On RUclips I follow Mustie1 channel who repairs all types of oddball small engines. Learned enough to feel confident enough to dive into this repair.

Hi Mustie...another relaxing video on Sunday morning!... Picking up info on every video!...In my opinion you are the best video on RUclipsl...Tks for sharing!
Bought a new one last year, Didn't start this year! Carb is different on mine. Fortunately had some Musty mentoring, Got it running with some carb cleaner and a shot of starting fluid. Similar starting and propulsion. Glad I watched this so I can come back to have guided trouble shooting. better Musty than Murphy! LOL! Saw some comments about finding these. not! But the man goes to the better side of NH and gets good stuff!
I'm on my second free mower...I've been buying new ebay carburetors, not even bothering trying to clean the old out. I sell them on craigslist. I feel like i owe Mustie1 some tuition money. Now the future Mrs. Iamgriff is a subscriber, and brings home stray small engine projects.
I have a toro like that and it still runs first pull every time, I bought it over 10 years ago at a yard sale and it was used when I got it. Ive run the manufactured fuel in it, and I personally think thats one of the keys to it.
I had to do a gas tank drain/clean and carb clean on a pressure washer I have that was having issues running well. After I cleaned everything and it ran perfectly, I proceeded to pressure wash my house. My neighbor watched this whole thing happen and came over and we started chatting about the machine and the convo came around where he asked if I'd rather be pressure washing my house or be at the beach relaxing? I honestly took a second to think and said, i'd rather fix the machine, then pressure wash the house. His response was, "Now you're just being controversial." I laughed because I wasn't. I have a feeling the people that watch these videos probably feel the same way I did.
Fixed a newer version of that Toro. Got $150. Needed a carb rebuild kit with the needle seat being shot and a couple other gaskets. Kit was $14.50. A new whole carburetor was $8.50. No brainer. Sharpen and balance the blade. Clean and degrease the entire thing. Slap in a new air filter (dude tilted it the wrong way and it was soaked in oil). Ran like a champ. But yea, having other donor machines around is a nice luxury.
Mustie! I have a relatively new chainsaw that suddenly froze up. Chainsaw was worth maybe $ 450 and $500. I did what you did... put WD 40 and PB Blaster into the cylinder via the spark plug entry and connected a drill motor (after rocking it back and for,th. I managed to free it up and have every expectation to make it work. Thanks... My local Husqvarna dealer said it was beyond economic repair. Works.! Thanks.
@@lilgampla I don't know, he lives in an area where all the houses are on large plots, which suggests the residents probably aren't short of a few quid. A lot of people like that will give away something that's becoming troublesome and buy a new replacement rather than live with the hassle when they need it as bigger houses on bigger plots often means more mature owners...
i fixed a lawn mover recently with help from watching your videos mustie, just needed a carb clean. i not got a ultrasonic cleaner thou, used the wifes dishwasher machine in kitchen instead. worked a treat :)

Aircraft Mechanic> Mistie I enjoy your videos. The only effect rust would have is at the surface of the core of the coil core and the magnet surfaces at the perimeter of the flywheel. Rust that the magmatism has to flow across is like a weak resistor in an electrical circuit. IF several other conditions are contributing to a weak spark the rust may be the straw that breaks the camel's back. The only other condition that could be the loss of spark with respect to rust is if the primary circuit of the coil grounds through the magnetic coil core to frame ground to complete the primary ignition circuit then rust will diminish the primary current and prevent a spark. But usually, the coil screws that anchor the coil core will be a reasonable electrical ground for the primary circuit.
I've got the exact mower although mine is pull start, 18 years and 1 pull starts every time. Have replaced pull cable and drive gear and a few oil changes. Love it.
My 20 year old Toro looks identical. Near mint condition and still runs like new. Only put 2 tires on, changed oil regularly and plugs in 20+ years of use. Great, reliable mowers.
When my uncle retired he used to pick up broken discarded lawn mowers and fix them himself and sell them at flea markets. It added quite a bit to his retirement income.
That mower that was thrown away was in much better shape than the mowers I use regularly. Good find. I finally got around to fixing the self propel on my Toro motor and going to fix the cracked oil sump on my spare mower next.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, Mustie1. I have a Toro that is 16 years old with front wheel drive and have replaced the front transmission and carb. The Tecumseh engines were great. These self propelled mowers work best when all the slack is adjusted out of the personal pace cable and it moves as soon as you push the handle.
I’ve got a problem my Craftsman push mower was filled with sae30w oil last summer only used it once and the other day I started it went down the yard for. About 12 ft and the motor locked up tight no oil it was dry as a bone. Can. Any thing be done to bring the motor back to life?

Sunday evening at 9PM.. gotta love Mustie1 before going to bed.. :)
That "ting ting ting" sound of a C-Clip flying off into the yonder never to be seen again lol.
Works.! Thanks.
Once again doctor mustie finds a new patient for the operating theatre.
Tbh i doubt they are just random encounters they seem planted sometimes
@@lilgampla I don't know, he lives in an area where all the houses are on large plots, which suggests the residents probably aren't short of a few quid. A lot of people like that will give away something that's becoming troublesome and buy a new replacement rather than live with the hassle when they need it as bigger houses on bigger plots often means more mature owners...
i fixed a lawn mover recently with help from watching your videos mustie, just needed a carb clean. i not got a ultrasonic cleaner thou, used the wifes dishwasher machine in kitchen instead. worked a treat :)
Another great video, Mustie1. Informative and entertaining at the same time. Really appreciate you taking the wheel drive cogs apart; always wondered how they worked and now I know. Your small engine videos are so educational they could be strung together to make an online course.
At 12 years old I was doing the same thing. I loved curb sales.
Always look forward to a mustie Video!!
Thanks 🙏🏻 for taking the time to make them !!
I can't believe this. This is the exact mower I got for free and I'm just waiting on parts. There was an oil leak through a seal on mine. Good timing.
"Sometimes it pays to be a junk collector." Sometimes? I can't imagine how much money I have saved. Picking up what I find on the side of the road and reconditioning it is both cheaper AND personally satisfying.
@youtube name Ouch! I hope you weren't hurt. True, I have picked up quite a few things that turned out to be unsalvageable. Not cheaply, anyway. But most of my finds have been good ones. Better luck you you, my friend!
I know that nobody will believe it but when you had it finished and said guess how many pulls I said out loud "one". That's how confident I am of your work --- which apparently is more confident than you gave yourself credit for.
Love the videos. Long time subscriber. You have inspired me and taught me how to work on small engines. I had a limited education but am quite competent now. Thank you! Please keep them coming!
I'm looking for troy bilt
Noticed at the beginning when you picked it up, you put it carb side down then called yourself out later, love it, new sub here
The wife of the former owner after watching this video: Bill, I thought you said the old mower was a complete wright off!!
The husband: Curses RUclips under his breath as he continues to polish his beautiful new riding mower...
*snorts* Yeah, right. More like... "Bill, when are you gonna get rid of this junk?" "But it only quit working yesterday, it just needs fixed up a little bit" "Put it out by the road, or you're sleeping in the doghouse tonight."
I'm guessing the guy let it sit outside all winter so he could get a new one when it didn't start.
@@j.w.3345 My brother ran some old briggs engine mower out of oil till it wouldnt start...i put some new random oil i had laying around in it, used it for a whole season and gave him it back at the end, just giving it a good test. Thing was a one pull pony. Same with the Honda we have. Don't get me started on weedwackers lol. Pulling for hours.
@@tiger12506 Mustie estimated it was 20 years old... I'm sure both spouses felt like they got good mileage from it.
@@Rhodeygirl The old stuff could eat the Chinese crap they sell now and still keep going!
G'day mate you've just saved me a bloody fortune got two quotes from trimmers in Perth each quoted over $300 and were just going to place a foam panel over existing after i delivered the seat, I purchased foam replacement from ebay for $230 happy days cheers
The Price is Right...’Free’ the best price you can get!
I’ll pay you to take it is better!
I'm a West Bend and Chrysler nut and that's the first I've ever seen that beauty!! Wow! Such a nice clean smooth running motor!!
Another victory!:) I can't believe how many folks throw away their mowers... Kudos to you! Semper Fidelis

When I see ya work on mowers it reminds me of myself in my younger days, I've done small engine and mower repair on and off for nearly 40 years
🎼another Mustie mower Sunday hey hey. (Pleasant valley sunday)
Thanks for all the repair videos! Was able to take a free non-working mower, was able to dignose and determine it was the carb, clean it minimal tools to get it running again.
Hello everyone. Just as much as the videos, I enjoy all the regular commentators. Have a super day and a great week ahead.
(and if you want to see how not to fix things....I'll be holding a class on smashing the bageezus our of a pulley that would not come off .......silly pulley be more funny).
I am blown away by this gays knowledge & passion for what he does & his patience to teach us. God Bless you Mustie.
@@ModestoALugo ?????????? " This GAYS knowledge....." ???????? Maybe you meant " This GUYS' knowledge..."
@@robertn2813 I didn't know he was gay (not that there's anything wrong with that!). That's good intel--I guess his "wife" is the proverbial 'beard'...
You never fail to keep me watching as you give more life to things..
At the 24-minute mark you spray the starter motor clutch with some kind of a cleaner. What is the cleaner you are using?
I think he decided the oil was the problem so he used a degreaser to remove it. Maybe something like Brakleen
I’ve been watching your channel for a while Mustie. All my lawn equipment was free and I fixed myself.
even in that condition folks around here are asking 150-200 for those Toro PP. I wish they grew on trees here like they seem to near you. 👍
Coffee and a Mustie1 video. Great way to start my Sunday! Hot rod rake on the mower!! lol I think the previous owner just wanted a new mower, Honey we need a new mower, this thing cuts weird..lol....Look at the lawn! lol. Free mower for Mustie1!!! SCORE!! Stay safe Mustie1, God Bless.
If they raised the Titantic from the ocean floor, Mustie would have it under steam in only 3 episodes.
Mustie could land men on Mars using scrap mowers, weed wackers and vw bus parts.

Anyone with a brain can fix a lawn mower
I concur
That wheel called mechanism is one of the most perfect examples I've ever seen to advocate for dry lube like graphite
Your channel Big Mustie is really awesome. I enjoy listening to you when I am working on my own projects too.
Mustie: oh look, a free mower!
Guy returning from taking a break while mowing his lawn: where's my mower??
Your comment made me laugh
I've got the exact mower although mine is pull start, 18 years and 1 pull starts every time. Have replaced pull cable and drive gear and a few oil changes. Love it.
Sunday night Mustie1 in prime time.
Where I live it’s the start of noon
6am here in TX
My 20 year old Toro looks identical. Near mint condition and still runs like new. Only put 2 tires on, changed oil regularly and plugs in 20+ years of use. Great, reliable mowers.
You make me want to go find junk.
EXACTLY! He does that to me too. So far I've resisted, but...
When my uncle retired he used to pick up broken discarded lawn mowers and fix them himself and sell them at flea markets. It added quite a bit to his retirement income.
As I have said before, bad gas and coffee, it’s a Mustie1 morning. Yeah!
I have bad gas every morning with my coffee. Lol.
That mower that was thrown away was in much better shape than the mowers I use regularly. Good find. I finally got around to fixing the self propel on my Toro motor and going to fix the cracked oil sump on my spare mower next.
When I opened, video had 4 views but 18 thumbs up. I’m either 5th or 19th. Either way, another good Sunday morning with Mustie and a cup o coffee.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, Mustie1. I have a Toro that is 16 years old with front wheel drive and have replaced the front transmission and carb. The Tecumseh engines were great. These self propelled mowers work best when all the slack is adjusted out of the personal pace cable and it moves as soon as you push the handle.
who remembers the old days before mustie started editing the volume softer on the wiz wheel
noise alert ! 😀
“..needs some love..”
I’ve got a problem my Craftsman push mower was filled with sae30w oil last summer only used it once and the other day I started it went down the yard for. About 12 ft and the motor locked up tight no oil it was dry as a bone. Can. Any thing be done to bring the motor back to life?
