my neighbor dropped off his push mower that would not start but l did not get to talk with him . so lets see what it takes to troubleshoot his machine.
Thank you, Mustie 1, for caring about your neighbor. For the last four years I have been mowing my neighbor's yard for her when I do mine. She is elderly and has never learned how to start a mower. She was left with no one to help her and I thought, "I hope someone would help my Mom if she were in this same circumstance. It really does me a lot of good to see her smile! Last year when my string trimmer died I told her I would edge and trim again when I could afford a new trimmer. The next day she brought me an Echo SM225 in the box. I told her I would pay her back as soon as I could and she said, "Oh, no. That's your trimmer. I don't know how to use it!"
I don’t know your neighbor but thanks for looking out for him. Our elders are survivors and always deserve our help. Love your videos and have learned so much. I’m proud that you don’t just care about yourself. A happy smile is worth a thousand dollars.
It's memorizing watching the care go into an old junky lawn mower. Most people would just throw it away for a new one. But now it seems as good as new. Well done. I am sure your neighbor was very grateful.
I’m a bit of a “wrencher” and watch out for my fairly aged widow neighbor and her machinery. She has a power washer that needs to be maintained regularly as she lends it to family and they never help keep it up or use it right. That just consume versus contribute. The service/repair shops tell her she needs stuff which she doesn’t so i work it over each year for her. She watches my pool if I travel for a few days. We’re neighbors in the old way. Nicely done Mustie1.
Mustie I really respect how genuine your videos are. There is no boasting about "this is the way you do this, and it's the ONLY way". There is no "the last guy was a moron". It's just us getting to hang out with you in your garage and learn from your experience. Thank you.
You're a great neighbor Mustie, nice to see you looking after the folks that need a bit of help, I'm sure they appreciate that more than one would think.
Sir,,, you are a Pillar of your community. I will wager you made less than .05 cents per hour on this service for a neighbor . You Sir are a inspiration to me and I hope many others. Thank you for being simply "Mustie 1" . One of the good ones.
We too took care of our elderly neighbor. After 15 years he passed. We still miss him till today.... And that was over 30 years ago. He was a lonely guy (his wife had passed before we met him) but a really nice man. Korean war Army infantry veteran too. Tough to find great neighbors.
I've probably watched you pull apart and service a carb more than 50 times now over the years. Despite being somewhat mechanically inclined it was something I would have never touched. These days I think if I was faced with one I wouldn't be too worried about digging into it. The constant stream of knowledge at a relaxing pace is what makes this channel so enjoyable. Thanks again!
6-7 years now, and your videos are the first thing i open up when i see them still. thanks for all the hard work and sharing man, i really appreciate it.
@@mustie1new spark plug and gaped, new carburetor, new air filter, oil looks almost new. I have the same basic type of mower but after running it won't restart even after hitting the primer bulb nothing. Should you see a little bit of gas out the primer bulb by the throat of the carburetor? I can start the mower up again after it dies with propane down the throat of the carburetor with air cleaner off with propane but once it mower sudenly stops it won't restart unless I put propane down its throat again. the float is level in the carburetor, carb its new because a piece broke off where the float screw goes in the carburetor that's the reason I replaced the carburetor and the mower had been sitting for several years where it was all stopped up in the carburetor with sludge from gas. Gasoline doesn't flow out of the gas tank it drips. I'm thinking there's a restriction in the gas tank or it may be a leak from the carburetor to the motor not drawing the fuel in. I haven't cleaned gas tank out yet. I'm thinking it might be trash in the gas tank causing a restriction or an air leak. I sprayed propane around the carburetor 2 engine but didn't hear a pitch change in the motor so I don't think it's leaking there. I did treat the fuel with fuel stabilizer. What do you think restriction in the gas tank? I didn't want to have to pull the gas tank off I appreciate your help.
I had to smile. The tag on the mower's tank reminded me of my grandparents who never took a tag or price sticker off of anything they bought unless they had to. Thanks Mustie for another great video.
I know you have years under your belt, but you still make it look easy Darrin. It's always nice to be able to help a neighbour out, whether it's the generation in front of us or the one coming up through the ranks..
Once again I'm in your debt. Trying to get my old Evinrude 9.5 running for the season. No start. Gave it a little tickle and vroom vroom. Pulled the bowl plug Mustie style and dry. Easy to take top of carb off. Nice and clean but needle stuck up blocking fuel. Just tapped it and it came free. Looked clean so put it back together. Let's squeeze the bulb a few times. Ah, hear fuel gurgling in the bowl now. Let's give her a tug what do you say? Vroom and stays vrooming. Thanks for all the lessons!!!!
I like projects like this. Get 'em in, do some cheap repairs, get 'em working again, and send them home. Old mower is showing it's age, but it ain't dead yet! (I kept waiting for you to remove that tag on the gas tank...) Good work! And a wascaly wabbit too!
Like you I've always had a soft spot for the elderly. Most are very kind and sweet. No matter how rotten some are or have been they simply can't do for themselves any longer. Nice quickie clean-up and readjustment. My only observation is that you could've swapped the wheels front to back and vice versa. The old gentleman that owns it would get a better work-out that way. Thank you. The VESPA is calling you. Do you hear it? I do and I'm sitting in Halifax, Nova Scotia. VESPA, VESPA, VESPA!!!
I wish I could get someone to help me, you are a kind person, reminds me of me when I was younger. I was told then that I give more than I should... me I didn't care that I gave more. You are a gem
You are a good neighbor thank you for helping out one of us oldies...you have a lot of interesting looking things in your yard how about a tour sometime kind regards from the UK.
Its amazing how cheap they make mowers anymore. When I was a kid if you bought a new mower in the 1960's you could expect it to last at least 10 years or more. In the 1986 I bought a new store brand mower with a Briggs 4hp engine and it was totally wore out in three years of heavy mowing, The valve guides that were non replaceable were so loose the valves were tilting and loosing compression. My first mower was one I found in the garbage in 1968 that was a 1959 Toro that had a rusty fuel tank that I replaced. It lasted until 1975 and a whole lotta lawns I mowed as a kid making money.
VetteKid Most mowers, especially store brands are made for light to medium household duty. You should get a professionnal grade if used heavily, they're tougher and endlessly repairable. But I must agree, they are made cheapely nowadays. My neighbour bought a new one last year with a Briggs on it. They told him that it would never, ever need an oil change! I asked about it to my local retailer/repair shop and he told me they were a new generation of now "maintenance free" engines but with a strange smile on his face. (!) He said "Tell your friend to change his oil every year as usual..." It says it all !
Bought a Murray mower in about 1975 at a Gambles HW in Wisconsin. Cost $103. Moved to Texas in 1979. Ran it every week during growing season until 2005. That's 30 years. Changed the oil every spring. Went thru 3 sets of wheels. Still started on first pull (ok, maybe second) when i got rid of it. Body was too rusted out to go on.
Good on you to help out a neighbor. Reminds me of my grandfather, he was the plumber to half his small town well into his 80's always willing to help out where he could.
At first I was thinking I wish I had that lift or even a garage with enough room to move around. But really what I wish I had was this gent’s incredibly deep understanding of how it all works and how much you can fix by bending something back to where it was supposed to be.

This is the perfect opportunity for me to say thanks, Mustie. Your small engine rescue videos have given me the confidence to do my own mower service for the first time. I have an 18" push mulching mower that had old unstabilised fuel from the previous season and was overdue an oil change. I drained the tank, removed the carb bowl and cleaned the small amount of crud from it, changed the plug and filter and finally changed the old oil (about 3 seasons). Fresh non-ethanol fuel and it runs really nicely now. The only thing I could not do due to lack of tools was sharpen the blades. So, once again, thanks and +sub
The grinder/flap disk are great ways to sharpen the blade, but an ordinary file will do the trick just as well, just needs a bit more muscle power. RichE
