Mustie1 should be anyone's first stop. He does this almost every day (or night; he can do it in his sleep! ;-) ) He builds really awesome stuff, too. Glad you got her running, Nathan! Deal of the year! With Troy built and Honda, you can't go wrong. And like the others said, don't use ether. Get a little squirt bottle with a tube out the top and put two stroke mix in it and prime with that.
Very epic!!
I drive 18 wheelers and I have a General Contractors license for residential construction. Now I wanna learn small engine repair on lawn mowers and ride on mowers. I love building and fixing things. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and showing us step by step what you were doing. I love this.
You can do it!!!!
You get an "A" for not giving up on this. As challenging as these carbs are to take off and put on, I always do a complete cleaning the 1st time, including the emulsion tube. You have every right to be proud if this was your 1st Honda repair!
Thanks man! I still own it...and spring is acommi'n! ;)
U did a good job bro. I would have done the same thing and laughed about it. It was great all of that build up then boom nothing. I loved it. Then the comical moment walla its still not fixed. Crap. Sorry folks got to call it a night stay tuned on the next installment of dr.garage sale finds. Thanks, its wonderful and informative and f7n to watch.
A guy is selling a Honda lawn mower with a broke. Blade bolt, rusty blade and dirty carb. This video gave me confidence to bid on it. He’s asking for 60, I offered $10 and if I’m able to fix it I’ll mow his lawn.
That's why I like mowers with gas valves. Towards the end of the job, I shut off the gas and let the engine die, to empty the carb and avoid any residue to gum up- even when using gas additives...
Yea they are nice to have ;)....
I fix and sell "broken" mowers all the time. It's a fun hobby. Love to hear those magic words "I think it needs carb work."
The wire to spark plug how do I know if it's good
@@frankvalenza1989 You test for spark like in the video. If no spark, you buy a new magneto (coil) It comes with the wire attached. I don't think you can just replace the wire. Whole thing costs $15.
@@richardcase1653 You can splice the wire, if you have an old parts engine around. I put a weed eater wire and boot on my mini bike magneto wire and it works great
same thing in France :)
So many negative comments. Move on. This man loves what he does and he does this with passion, appreciation and for the sport of it. Thank You for sharing your knowledge and joys of flipping.
Thank You...He is Awesome...$10.00 From someone's $250.00...Priceless..
Always remember on social media of any kind you have all walks of stupid and everyone is a expert you learn to ignore these types of people....I really enjoy this man videos he's very helpful and informative....
Love the feeling of taking something someone threw away and gave up on and making it work like new again! Love it!
Thanks. Everyone says I should do more videos. I just might.
I have the same mower. Has treated me well for over a decade.
Nice!!
Don't understand why you didn't clean the jets
A neighbor put out a snowblower to the curb a few months ago. I took it even for parts if it didn't work. Well I looked at it and all I saw was a disconnected primer bulb. It had electric start. Plugged it in and started in a few seconds. Checked it all over and everything worked 100% on it. Sold it for $350.00. Winner, winner!
Nice!!
the very first thing you should do after buying/ finding a second hand mower is replace the petrol with fresh fuel
Hell ya!~
Hi you should check spark and fuel and clean the petrol tank and replace old petrol, I fitted in-line filter for the fuel walked a treat
Petrol? Where are you from?
Exactly, it is almost always old fuel and at the most a carb. clean, maybe a gasket needed (not very often) and it is good to go! Fresh, very new gas is the #1 first thing to do like you said imo.
Sounds like horse piss I usually just top them off and burn it out
It feels good when you can fix it yourself.
Big -10-4!
I can tell by the gloves you are thrifty as I am. I am a lover of curb find lawn mowers myself.
Nice!!!
Ever watched Mustie1 on RUclips? Best small engine guy and all around mechanic I've ever seen. No offense to you, Nathan, you've generously offered up a nice simple tutorial here that may help some people.
Thanks!~
good job Nate...going to go through the same checks on my son in laws mower...thanks for the tutorial...
Nice over all video,
Mowers and Blowers OutDone
;D
I'm proud of you, great job, you didn't give up!!
Word! Thanks!
Underneath the main jet lies the "Emulsion Tube". That should be pushed out from the inside of the venturi and cleaned with the micro drill bits. The Chinese carbs also have a midrange-low speed jet which lies under the throttle stop screw. Remove the throttle stop, pull out the low speed jet, and run a #78 micro drill bit thru it.
When putting this type of carb back on, put two wooden dowels in the bolt holes. Slide all the parts on. Then hold the whole affair against the block, pull dowels out one at a time and put the bolts in. Makes it a 2 minute job. Cleaning emulsion tube is a definate to do.
Honda carbs are usually less than $25.00. No kits available, have to get parts piece by piece.
Word!
Nice tip!
Definitely a great suggestion. It was a total PITA the way I did it, loading it all together on the bolts.
Great hint on dowels. Thanks.
thanx for the taking the time to help; if I had a problem with your information, which I do not, it would not be put forth in a superior or unappreciative fashion; GOOD WORK !!!
152 dislikes from folks who let their 250 dollar mowers go for 10 bucks. Nice video 👍🏼
They got FUCKED! Lmfknao Hahaha
Maybe they dislike his advice that the oil will have nothing to do with it not starting. WRONG! If it has an oil sensor (likely in good engine makes like Honda or B&S) then it absolutely won't start when the level is too low.
The "next big step" to buy GLOVES for 1$.
😂😂
@Perry Fillion *That* lawnmower? I think I might agree. But oil sensors are cheap now, so are an inexpensive way for manufacturers to give extra features at a lower price point. Appearances can be deceptive.
Oil level does matter in those that have them, so it needs to be on the checklist.
I have this same type of mower. It was doing the same thing but I didn't mess with carb. Next time I will check it out. I'm glad I found this video.
Nice..........;)
Got a FREE Honda mower from a guy down the street that his kids used it to mow yards with. They said it just stopped running one day and would not start. I checked it out, added gas (bone dry) and checked the oil which was barely showing on the dip stick. Well not everyone knows that Honda engines have a low oil cut off switch so I added fresh oil and the mower started on the second pull. It still needs a bit of work on the controls and a replacement wheel but what the heck I got a free mower.
Hell ya!!~
I found a composite deck self propelled Honda at work for free. All it needed was a carb cleaning and filter cover. For $30 in parts, I got myself a $300 mower
That's so cool. Nice!~
Tom Truesdale wxhu
GOOD SCORE, I love the stories
One tip that would of helped you is to take out the old gas. Put it in a clear bottle and inspect it. If there’s dirt, it’s not clear but yellow, and comes in layers due to water in the gas, it’s no good and will not burn well in the engine.
Thanks!~
Nathan thank you for your nice reply. Also although the mower in condition its in is more value of about $80, if you don't need the bag Its worth about $10 to $20 depending on condition.
Gotta blow out every jet....every hole you see....really need a small compressor...but not always. Clean the carb every two to three years...a mower should never die.
Word!~
Good job. Always looking to learn something new. Mowers that I've repaired are treated to a spray of Oxygen Orange (dollar tree), after a 1/2 hr. hosed off, air (compressed or natural) dried, then a quick wipe with a spray detailer. Neighbors love it.
Nice!~
took the carb off twice...shoulduv blew it out & cleaned it up the first time...but all & all good job it works...$10 cant beat it
When I was a kid 50 yrs ago, gas-powered mowers would run for years & years. Since Congress mandated ethanol in gasoline, I have had so much trouble with gas-powered lawn equipment, that I went electric.
It's almost amazing that people "throw away" mowers for such and easy fix. I've watched a lot of these videos and if it will start, it;s almost always that main jet has some little clog. A quick clean of that and you're back to work. Good video. Interesting watching you make mistakes and learn. LOL
I know right! I missed out n a $350 lowes mower yesterday for $50! Some gut beat me to it. I'm always looking.
Yea thing is most people don't want to get their hands dirty and try, easier to throw a few hundred bucks to buy a new one than even have a shop attempt to fix something like this. I got myself a nice little Bobcat snowblower for $20, $20 later on a new chinese carb since I couldn't get the original working and like magic I was blowing snow off my driveway last winter.
Those Bobcat snowblowers were the best ever made. Even a Craftsman from the 80's is better built than the cheap plastic stuff they make today.
Many owners don't know how to repair these machines, and if they bring it to a shop, they are going to be charged a bundle. So, many people just buy a new one since their machine is probably several years old.
Agree Dave. people mind set is ahh its dont start its rubbish buy new one
Great video.... excellent summary on troubleshooting the fuel problems on a Troy Bilt. Have the same make model; that's the way to do it! CH
Thanks!
Fresh fuel and clean the plug!!!!
ok
Thanks, good to be able to fix things, I'm learning. I prefer fixing the old models and like the look of them too.
Nice!!
Air cooled motors want to be run on high, you are the first I ever heard say run at half...
When it started I found myself smiling. I enjoyed the vid. Thanks
Thanks!~
Hint, hint; whenever you take the carb off, take the carb APART and check everything, the smallest debris can couse a big problem
yes all ways he ding ding
Ya I just bought a used mower it was only used like 3 times but the last time it was used was 3 or 4 years ago and it wasn't starting I literally completely took the car completely a part 4 times it still.did not run and then my uncle said he may be able to fix it i was that for 10 minutes and he fixed it i was really confused lol
The carb still looks dirty with oil n debris around the casing..didnt change gaskets..needle ..jets..oh well..video not good.
Thank you for your videos. All these know it alls disliking your videos. I enjoy watching you troubleshoot the engine. I would be talking it out just like you. So, keep the videos coming!! Some of us enjoy them! Great deals on your yard sale trips!!
;D
It's usually STOOPID People!
100% of the time, It is always the Emulsion tube plugged up. Good video, thank you for being honest, and you did a great job, by process of elimination. Thank you for posting and good job, you got it to run again.
Nice! Thanks!~
I bought a $20 yard sale Craftsman single stage snowblower on Sat. Broken recoil rope and gummy carb. Runs like a top now, good for $200 come Nov. Got to love those ultrsonic cleaners!
Winning!!! ;D
Omg carb is off might as well clean it. You had me pulling my hairs out lol
I had the exact same problem and I resolved almost the exact same way. It ran great for about two cuttings and same problem recurred.....twice more. Got it running again, sold it at a bargain price for conscience sake and bought a used mower that works minus the Tecumseh engine. .
Nice!!
My Briggs and Stratton owners manual says to always run engine at full throttle.
Yep. My 2 year old mower (with Honda engine) doesn't even have a throttle. Full power all day long.
every mower mfg tells you not to run at anything but full throttle when cutting grass. don't believe everything Tubers say
@@johnmeynardie6356 you should, in fact, always mow at full throttle. Lugging the engine will cause early wear inside the engine. Idling down is for mowers with a blade break (when the blade is not engaged) or when you are warming up or cooling down.
Next time you pull the Carb off and only blow in one hole take the float out, there are two to 3 holes inside one where the float pin goes and one in the middle and sometime one on the side .Take a skinny small pin or wire and stick it through all the wholes then take a air compressor with a blowing tip and blow the wholes out and watch that the rubber seet doesnt fall out then put it back together.
Great Idea!
Really nice job on that mower. All that greasy grunge on the deck can be as a result of the previous owner overfilling with oil, and GCV's are renown for leaking oil out the governor shaft, when overfull. Keep that level at the full or down 1/8"inch from full mark and you wont have that grunge to clean up. $10 and a bit of time, and look at the result, well worth it!!!
Thanks for sharing!
harrothepilot not a gcv in the video, probably a clone though
I like the fact that you included your mistakes and you showed that sometimes it may takes more than once to complete a job. You proved that your human lol. Good job Thanks for the great video.
My guess is clean that carburetor, completely. My guess is the main jet and the idle circuit are probably dirty.
I got my almost brand new $250 mower out of the trash after a hurricane. It had been underwater and still had water in the crankcase. Flushed the engine and carb with fresh water, then with M.M.O., cleaned the carb, washed, cleaned, and oiled everything outside, new plug, fresh oil, and it started first pull. Warmed it up and changed the oil again, and have been using it regularly for almost a year.
Yea! Nice!!
Good job, btw it's always the carb
Thanks!
Well not always..
Letting gas sit in a carb is the number one problem.
It's always the carburetor for sure.
Yeah I was like come on man your talking engine damage before checking the carb? That's the shit a salesman would do lol
I always picked up mowers from the curb. Most of them needed I repaired and sold them at my garage sale. Easy money!
Nice!!!
Nice, informative video. That guy 3 blocks away is running trimmer or model plane and not lawn mower.
Check leakdown to check rings and valves and head gasket. Tune the engine. Replace the carburetor. Change the oil. Torque the head bolts. Check idle speed adjustments. Check valve adjustments. Remove the flywheel and replace the top seal and replace the lower seal.
Yes true!~
I'm all about $10 mowers man!
Hey man I watch your RUclips channal keep up the good work
nothing wrong with that respect i love this club lol
Yes I know what you mean, I just got 5 of them for 20 dollars and got 3 of them running already
You did good, and now too it looks great ... A WIN!
When u clean the carb, u want to always clean the whole carb like the main jet and stuff.
Yes good advice!
Great small engine maintenance guide, thanks for this!
Word!~
Always put a full carby kit through if you have a fuel problem!
Word!
Also go to your local Habitat Restore if you have one. Ive found brand new mowers a year old donated by a chain for the Restore to sell.
Or nearly new rentals. Selling at a fraction of cost of new retail.
Easy flips, for money in your pocket.
Word!~
it's a good income on the side. buy them get them running and sell it that one I'd get 150 I pay $10-$40 depending on the mower. I do all small engines now and do it full time.
Yea True. I never though this video would get 157K views. I did two more
videos on small lawn mowers/Pressure washer and they have not gotten
500 views, lol... strange....But I'll just keep doing them. Extra money is a good thing!
The choke isn't just a temperature thing. It helps create more vacuum in the intake to draw more fuel through the jets.
Yeah I think your right.
Should of went straight to the carb. 99 percent of the problems on these are in the carb/ float bowl.
The last thing you did is usually the first function I check, at least on a Briggs; i.e., I will make sure there is fresh gas in the tank and check to make sure there is good oil in the crankcase (as mentioned earlier, this is more important on a Honda since the low oil shutoff will prevent it from starting) then I will pull the air filter, try cranking it a few times, then if no luck spray carb cleaner in carb and try cranking again. When it runs but then dies, you know you have spark, so you can save that step, and it usually means the carb is dirty. I don't think I've ever had a problem with the float valve, nearly always a clogged jet. I will first try just removing the bowl and using carb cleaner with the tube to spray the jet holes. If that doesn't work,I have had a time where I sprayed carb cleaner in the carb, put the air filter back on and let it sit for a spell and it started. If no luck so far, I take the carb off and clean it--carb cleaner with the tube doubles as a blower/air pressure, and if push comes to shove a fine wire to ream out the jet holes.
Great!
i knew you didn't turn the fuel line on. good job, clean it up :)
I did that with my tiller but it wasn't the fuel line. It was the on/off switch. I felt like an idiot!!! Not the first time I've done it and I'm sure it won't be the last.
Well done !
Nice!!
Great job... breaks down every task. You motivated me to try my hand on two older lawn mowers that I have sitting around in the shed. lol Again, great job.
Getrdone!!
It's usually ALWAYS the carb, or the gas tank.
good find anyways....little elbow grease does wonders but like i said it wasnt just 10$..you have to include your labor you put into it too
Yea true. But its the satisfaction of control.
no idea why i watched this video, but i enjoyed it. thanks
I like watching someone else work...lol
@jason same
He's only bluh bluh no idea what fixed.
Nice job congratulating yourself.
Nice Job reminding me.
that's why I always run non ethanol in my small engines so you don't have to worry about that crappy ethanol gas fowling up a carburetor
Nice!~
Yes...but I always want to ask " What was in the gas station storage tank before the non-ethanol gas ?".
I don't think that non-ethanol gas exists anymore. Corn farmers have a very good lobbyist, and big bucks for political donations. Don't really care if they ruin your mower.
@@richardcase1653 Search on Google and you should find stations that have it. Also if you live near a marina check there. Our local marinas all carry non ethanol gas.
If you use Stabill 360 it deadens the ethanol of the gas. Ever since I use Stabill 360 never have a problem with gas storage inside the machine over winter or summer for winter equipment
I have a Honda engine that runs a pump. A safety feature is that it will not start if the oil is below a certain level.
Nice!
New subscriber to your channel. I am not mechanically inclined at all, so if you could give us a explanation of what each part does would help. I learn a lot of your videos, thank you. Your voice is so calming on the video.
Give me a phone number
Lol I like your lawn mower videos they are therapy
As a rule of thumb, always use the choke on a cold Honda motor, doesn't matter the outside temp, all warmer outside temp will do is make the choke return to fully open quicker, great video BTW.
100% right!
Yeah, it bugs me too, I have a few neighbors, that run their mowers at full throttle, two of the mower did indeed blow up, then they bring them to me to fix, I own my own shop and repair these things every day, and they always get angry with me when I tell them they need a new engine, or a new mower, that running them at full throttle isn't good for the engine, well their stupidly keeps me in business.... Lol
It was killing me that he wasn't using the choke! It probably would have started after the first time he emptied the bowl. When you put the choke on full it helps pull the fuel into the system.
Sounds like a chain saw cutting down trees more than a lawnmower. I've never heard a lawnmower turned up that high. Lol people are funny
I always find the main plugged
True
I always find the low speed idle jet plugged. Much tinier oriface than the main jet
Great job
Great video. I have done the same thing a dozen times, but experience has taught me to go on-line and look for the users manual before I dismantle everything. You may have had a better find than you thought. This model must be choked to start and when working properly will slowly open on its own. The Honda engines will normally start on the first pull. I learned a lot, Great Vid on trouble shooting and repair. When I pick up a non -running mower I put in new gas and remove the spark plug and spray in WD-40 or starting fluid, reinstall the plug and pull. If it tries to start, its worth the extra efforts.
Nice!!!
These engines are governor controled will not over rev. Designed to run with throtle
all the way open for maximum output.
Thanks for the info!~
I was wondering how you could adjust the throttle on a mower without a throttle cable
It makes it tough on older folks with a self propelled mower without a throttle adjustment cable.
You should never run the engine full throttle just fast enough to get the job done.
Do you run your car with the pedal to the metal all the time? No you don't so don't do it to a mower with a much smaller engime
@@ChurchofGodofLickingCounty I actually do run my car full throttle a good amount of the time. It don't care, not that I'd recommend it.
I'm not sure with this engine, but i think Briggs and Stratton engines are meant to be run at 3600 RPM on mowers. That's the RPM they are rated at. The governor used to be (and might still be) a flapper thing that was pushed by the air off the flywheel. When it goes further from the flywheel it forces the throttle plate closed so it won't over rev. When the mower is hitting thick grass the engine will slow down, the flapper will go nearer to the flywheel, and the throttle plate will be opened.
I'm sure every mower is similar.
Great video showing us as you fix. Carbs seem to be the typical reason. You can almost supplement income by buying broken lawnmowers, fixing and selling.
Thanks!~>>>Supplement income...hell yea! I'm going to buy a
airplane....life long dream come true. I've done several this year so
far, they get easy after a while ;)
You are wrong when you say If the float has a hole in it it won't get gas. If the float has a hole in it the gas won't stop going in the carb. And you don't run air cooled engines at half throttle.
You are right on the float. I miss spoke. I have 3 push mowers that are air cooled. The have adjustable throttles.
Nathan Rohrbough no problem bud. I understand that they have adjustable throttles but it's hard on them to only run them half throttle.
Chris Beekley **
** u are almost correct. but half is ok...3/4 is best.
air cooled car mower or what ever
absolutly need lots air cooling. more for the oil then the cylinder.
You are correct. Engines are designed to run at about 3400-3500 rpm. That is a spec listed in repair manuals. The blades are also designed to create air lift to stand the blades of grass up so they can be cut at the correct height. Running an engine at half throttle will cut the lift in half therefore causing the blades of grass to fold over. Newer lawn mowers don't always have an adjustable throttle. This is probably the reason why.
Chris Beekley maybe why my air cooled Suzuki 500 had problems so often........
I found a Troy-Bilt with a Honda engine (self propelled) at Goodwill for $15.00. All it needed was an air cleaner cover, air cleaner, & 4 gaskets...thing runs like new.
Nice!!~~~
That actually sounds like a lawn boy in the background which is a 2 stroke and they have to run that fast for power
True.
Small engines are fun to work on. 95% of what kills them is a gunked up carb due to ethanol. Cool small engine channels to check out are Mustie1 and jennies garage
True! I may start doing smaller engines. There fun and everyone like them.
Great work on getting the mower fixed now I know what the problem is with mine
When I get mowers that "won't start" the very first thing I do, after checking to see if it will turn over, is squirt some starting fluid in it and see if it will fire up. If it runs for a minute or two, then I clean all the passages and jets in the carb. Usually this is the all that's wrong. Then I check other things, but usually I don't find much else wrong. Most people use ethanol gas and don't bother to turn off the gas and run them dry before putting them away for the winter. Ethanol gas absorbs water and sitting for long periods of time with water in the carb and fuel tank really messes them up.
Hello i was told to always run a small engine wide open to at factory rpm wish should be at 3250
Yea, not sure why some mowers are set on one speed. I still have this mower. I was looking at it tonight...and thinking...hurry up spring....lol
I worked small engines/mowers for a few years. The folks that ran the engines at part throttle, had the most problems. The engines were designed to run at full speed. Better cooling, more power, and if you have a hydrostatic drive, the pumps last longer and perform better. Bottom line, don't baby those engines.
I agree, I have been running my same Honda mower at full throttle for 30 years. Still runs great, starts on the first pull. I've rebuilt the carb a few times but that's about it.
I have a lawnboy honestly haven't looked at what engine it is, got it used been running it 5 years now no problems mowing an acre for 4 until I finally got a riding mower now I use it to get into tight spots. Fires up every time! People never learn to run your fuel tank empty or add a shut off valve and always store it inside.. Keep it on a dry surface when not in use and don't mow right after a rain and it'll last forever.
Full speed always
YARD SALE!
Take carb apart always clean it and blow it out.
Now when ya try to start it full choke or what ever the manufacturer says some don't have chokes so ya pump the bulb. Doesn't matter how jot it is outside the motor is cold now after it warms up you won't have to choke it until the engine gets cold. 😊
very important you screw out the jet of the tube and clean it.
I learn the hard way...haha
I got a motorcycle for free because the the guy didn't understand a thing about carbs. Needless to say I got it running in a weekend and now it's the love of my life.
I love stories like this...This is how you get ahead.
$10 bucks was basically getting the mower for free and it's 99% always the carburetor that's the cause of a non starting/stalling mower.
So True!
wow !!! I wanted to scream when he didn't pull the main jet and emulsion tube and the rest that needs done !!! And old gas !!!
Nice!!
$10 and one day labor for a like new mower !!.. yee haw !
Hell yea! lol
Aw Shucks.....I just love a story with a happy ending.
And disease free!
True That!
Great in depth video! Makes me feel like I can fix any lawnmoar myself. You a champ!
Thanks for posting such an informative video.
Awesome find, dude. Thank you for the step-by-step instructions on how to check for what might be wrong with a non-running mower. I will use this video to check out my mowers. Many blessings.
For me; small engines = high test gas + Stabil. Regular gas = ethanol = gum or stale gas.
Word!
Higher octane doesn't mean its ethanol free. We have 2 stations that sell non-ethanol gas where I live, one station is just premium fuel, the other is all octanes, but they charge a premium price which is BS, so I go to the other station that has premium non-ethanol fuel for my lawn/garden equipment...won't run anything else.
Exactly. You need to look for ethanol free. Buying premium does not guarantee no ethanol and based on the compression of these small engines isn't needed.
I buy non-ethanol, premium fuel doesn't burn properly in many engines, even cars that aren't high compression types, its a huge waste of money in most cases as a result...and it doesn't give you better fuel economy using premium fuel.
We have a couple stations in town that sell non-ethanol fuel one is only premium the other is all grades of fuel.
A good rule of thumb: If it has a carburetor, use non-ethanol. Lawn equipment, boats, motorcycles, ATVs often still use a carb. The only non-ethanol in my small town is 91 octane. It works fine in my riding mower and my moped scooter.
Todays ethanol based gasoline, have a very short shelf life. Three to 4 months and it wont burn. The first thing to do after a carb service, is to clean the fuel tank and filter if any, and fill with fresh clean fuel. If your gas can is older than 4 years, BUY A NEW ONE. A great alternate to gasoline is white gas, Colemans stove fuel. It has a ten year shelf life. Anyone doing small engine work must have a micro drill bit set, size 60 to 80 with a pin vise to clean out the main and idle jets.
Sooo True.
I enjoyed your cleaning experience. This was extremely helpful and I would encourage you to share more of your lawn mower repair tips. Great Video! Thank you
Thanks. I might just start some.
