- A start-to-finish restoration of a 1991 Craftsman LT4000.
This tractor needed a lot of work, but eventually I got it running. Then I dismantled it and painted all the parts. The finished product came out great!

Ken from kens small engines is a genius when dealing with smallengines and ken loves to help others out when they're having trouble finding a part or finding a part cheaper etç Hes got close to 25 plus years experience in this field mate.
Doug does excellent restoring of tractors. I’ve always appreciated his tips and tricks on getting them looking as close to OEM as possible.
So true!
That he does! I’m hoping my channel will be as good as your guy’s one day
Great job - that was a lot of work.
Thank you! Much appreciated
Awesome revival!!! I was thinking thats the best starter tecumseh ever made! Lol😂😂😂
Thanks
Thanks for keeping a clean video I can watch with the family
You’re welcome! You can count on that for all my future videos too
Amen
Yeah really respect him for keeping a clean video. Like I tell other people you got not only adults watching you got children that watch too. And for them to be able to enjoy your content their parents don't want to hear all that cursing nonsense. That'll bring a lot of views and subscriptions down. Or if you keep a good clean content no cursing it's going to be a lot of more people subscribing and watching. God bless 👍👍 Keep up the good work and I'll keep watching. And I think I'm going to subscribe when I'm done here.😊😊
My neighbor from across the street used to have an old Craftsman that looked kinda like this one you restored. I was too young to remember which exact model it was, but he kept it for many years back in the mid to late 90s.
I WATCHED THE WHOLE VIDEO,, VERY IMPRESSIVE WORK,,,, IT TAKES PATIENCE FOR THESE PROJECTS,,,, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK,,,,
Thank You
That craftsman Lt 4000 is a great mower from back in 1991 she is going clean up nicely glad you got all that stuff out of the Barn Kyle by the creek
Nicely done! Wished u lived near ME. I have the exact tractor but maybe a yr or two older. Mine has loose front steering & a wobbly tranny pulley. 👍
Hello Everyone my names is Kyle too. 🤣 real nice score. Over the last few years these have become difficult to find & Collectible.. Well at least GT4000s (older gen body) like yours. I've seen a few of both here in Michigan & Indiana/Ohio Real nice cleaned up & serviced w/ Attachments fetechting well into $900 up to 2500.
That’s awesome to hear!
Andrew started out with a mower he pulled from the garbage. Amazing
Thanks!
Dude well done!
Thank you!
Nice job. I just love those old Craftsman LT4000's. I just picked up two this past year. One was a turn-key situation and really needed nothing. The second was a bit rougher. I'll definitely will use some of the tips I picked up here getting that one looking presentable again.
Awesome! Glad to hear that
Turned out great man. I enjoyed watching....Thanks
Thank you!
Good job, it looks great. :)
Thank you!
Thank you so much for restoring and saving this LT4000! These are by far some of my favorite lawn tractors ever produced. They're simple and reliable, plus I love the styling. As always, amazing work!! Content like this is why I love your channel. I loved the start to finish video. I had to watch it in increments due to a busy schedule, but watched all of it nonetheless. Keep up the good work. 😁
Thank you so much. It’s very encouraging for me to hear you say that!
What a great project! Good pick and good restoration! Last year I did a small paint job of the underside of the mowerdeck for my garden traktor Stiga Villa Senator from 1999, greetings from Sweden BTW :)
Welcome to my channel. I’m glad you found it!
Just a little tip for ya. Before you move on from thinking it's a fueling issue try spraying starting fluid or gas right in the spark plug hole
Awesome job! The finish product looks amazing. I commend you for your talent and for sticking with it all the way from start to finish.
Thank you!!
Beautiful job! She’s a looker!
Thanks!
This is why I love gas equipment, can sit for a decade and still work with a little maintenance. No battery or battery equipment would last that long in damp conditions like most gassers are left in.
I'd be hard pressed selling your tractor for more than $200 in my area, so I just fix em up for fun then basically give em away or part them out.
@@M.TTT. I think it’ll sell for more in my area
@@Kylebythecreek niiiccccceee, I bet if it's more rural-ish, I'm in north NJ, most yards too small and people too cheap lol
@@M.TTT. could be! In my area most people have 3 acres of land
That came out fantastic. Nice job.
Thanks Doug! And thanks again for the advice on the carb and the paint
@@Kylebythecreek No problem anytime, us small engine enthusiast's gotta look out for each other.
Turned out nice. I yelled a few times at the screen, but you got er done ! You might want to buy some cheap thin floor mats & cut them to fit where you put your feet and glue them down. My LT2000 has those. Thanks for posting.
Thanks David!
This came out super nice Kyle. Deff a lot of hard work put into that one. Glad you were able to find a good carb and get it running smooth. Keep up the excellent content. 🇺🇸😎
Thank you! I’ve been enjoying your videos as well. Great work!
Excellent job! I always enjoy learning to work on my craftsman's and other things from these videos
Thank you!
That mower turned out beautiful, and will definitely last another 20+ years if taken care of. Great Job Kyle!
Thank you! Much appreciated
The mower turned out great, excellent job Kyle 👍
Thanks Mitch!
Great job Australia
You might try putting some heat on the decals before peeling them off. A heat gun or even a cheap hair dryer helps soften the adhesive. I use a hair dryer I picked up for a couple bucks at a thrift store if my heat gun isn't handy. The decals on this tractor peeled off fine without heat, but sometimes it's necessary to get them off in one piece.
Good work
Enjoyed watching
Thank you!
Looks really good and you got it running well, nice work 👍
Thank you!
Nice! 😎 It Looks Great ✅ Iowa Guy Here & I Really Enjoy Working/Painting On Stuff Too, Recently Did A John Deere 115 Automatic Hydrostatic Rider.
Awesome!
Super nice job, I did one of these back in 07, and it came out awesome, sold it for 700.
Oh wow! I’d be lucky to get half that
@Kylebythecreek me too in today's world, but that was sold in 07.
@@knighthawk86855 ‘07 sounds nice right about now
No I don’t but if you were closer say Pa, but I appreciate your work and responding to my questions. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
It looks great! When cleaning the carb, remove the main jet and clean it. Pop the emulsion tube out make sure that is totally clean. Don’t forget the tiny holes along the sides. You can use a strand of a stiff wire brush to clean the small holes. You can also use it to clean the low speed/ idle jet.
The entire cleaning process didn’t get filmed- it’s usually a bit boring to watch a full carb cleaning I think. Either way, this carb was shot. The new carb made all the difference! Thanks for the compliment!
Amazing job Kyle! I have a 91 lt4000 myself and plan on doing a full restoration this spring. You gave me some good ideas.
Glad to hear. We’d love to your project!
It looks beautiful, good work
Thank you!
Kyle, that is one fine looking machine. I call it a 6ft resto. From 6ft away it looks like brand new. I wish I could find something like that to tinker on. If you go back and watch the video, again, when you're checking for spark... the 2nd time I think.... Anyway, you will see spark jumping off the ground side of the original spark plug. As soon as I saw that, I shouted "bad plug" at the screen, but I don't think you heard me. Anyway, loved the video, keep up the good work and see ya on the next one. 👍
Yes, that plug was tricky! I was so skeptical of the coil I had to modified that I overlooked the plug!
Nice video. I had 2 of the rear engine type back in the 80’s. They did ok but I have graduated to some John Deere older 300 series and an older 425. Just don’t make them like they use to. Great job on the finished product.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. The rear engine ones are pretty cool, but they just aren’t as reasonable for normal use- I agree
Amazing what a new carb will do. I messed around with 2 Briggs & Stratton carbs on toro motors. Finally just ordered 2 new carbs and both run great.
@@jackhuddleston6830 yeah, totally worth it!
I have a 1995 craftsman with a 13.5 ic gold I found . It turns over nice with plenty of compression . I cant wait to start it up , it was missing a starter and deck.I am going to use the same paint you used ,it looks nice.
Awesome! Sounds like a fun project. I’m glad the paint info helped.
Great job l like your job looks nice 👍
Thank you!
Turned out really nice
Thank you!
I love it looks like brand new great job man
Thanks so much! It was a fun project
Great job.
Thank you so much!
Looks great!

Nice job.

Awesome, looks and sounds great!!
Really nice.
Thanks!
Enjoy your content. Keep up the good work
Thank you. Much appreciated!
a few min is ok but too much and it won't get the proper air flow and they get hot fast!!!!!@@Kylebythecreek
@@TheCaperfish thank you for the warning
very nice work
Thank you !
I really do appreciate and love your videos 📹 Kyle!!!!! Kyle sometime you might want to try Sea foam in the fuel ⛽️ tank when the thing is Surging. I use it a lot when I have that problem. It works about 90% of the time and it should smooth right out. I will put about 2 shot glasses of the Sea Foam in about an inch of fuel in the tank. I run it about 5 minutes and then turn it off and let it sit for about 1/2 hour. You will be amazed how good that stuff will work. I know that is quite a lot in that little bit of fuel. Running it cleans the jets and letting it sit really Breaks down the Contaminance and the build up.... I Love the Sea Foam great stuff....
so nice job
Thank you very much!
Awesome video Kyle! I’ve been subscribed for a few weeks now and love your videos. You’ve inspired me to pickup a lawn tractor myself and try to restore it. I like the personal touch at the end
Thank you! Glad to hear that you’re inspired!
I have that exact craftsman rider. Would love to have that one too
Let me know if you want to buy it!
I love it to
I restore The older 60 - 70 ones for fun and work. Great video Deff sorth a Sub.
Sounds fun!
Kyle I just got in your channel, that lawnmower looks great
Thank you! I really appreciate it
Hey Kyle have you ever made one of your riding mower into a racing mower, we have them here where we race them and in different stock categories but we have some that will run 80+ on a dirt track it’s so much fun and awesome to learn from other drivers. You should do a build on your RUclips channel just for fun
Hi! Nope, I’ve never done that. Sounds fun though
After market carbs are cheap for them, and they do work great, save the old carb just incase you gotta get a $$ rebuild kit for the orginal carb ,
You did a great job restoring that machine , however you'll never recoup the value of your time . I've been fixing this junk for people for over 35 years as a full time job . You didn't need to buy a new carb just a kit with a new via ton seat . They swell up in old fuel and won't allow enough fuel to pass through or get proper float settings . It does the same on Briggs and Kohler engines . At some point you'll want to clean them up and flip them as quick as possible for extra cash . That's how I started . You might want to keep this one as a testament to your work . Your neighbors will catch on quick when you mow with your antique mower . Also that AYP-Husky chassis has been unchanged for about 30 + years , lots of parts .
Thanks! I definitely understand that it’s not worth my time. But it’s a lot better when you consider the income from this video
Try a use 2 part mix fiberglass rosin in a gal can and paint it over and on you bare metal decks before you paint them underneath esp,,it sound proofs the deck during mowing and sand damage protects it and it last forever as far as rust protection. You can paint over it for looks,,just a trick of mind, and its sells to the people as well if you tell them at the sale ,as it ll never rust out again anywhere. As it cures out,its getts harder and more duable tougher than the steel its on
That lawnmower is having trouble starting up with the engine yikes 😬😬😬😬😬😬so awesome 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
That’s a lot of emojis
Give them some brake clean or engine starting fluid with oil in it down the carb body when you spin it over,,it ll start on that and allow you to hear then if you got carbs issues
Just spray the starting fluid down the carb hole while turning it over,,they ll start if you do have fire at the plug or plugs
Carbs gummed up like that. Have a good chance to be cleaned and work. There was no ethanol in the fuel 👍
I tried. It wouldn’t stop surging. A new carb fixed it perfectly
Kyle, what an amazing transformation and a lot of work! It was interesting to see where you pulled that equipment out of.
I was so sure the magneto you got was the issue, so I was very surprised when the new carb solved it.
Have you thought about using filler primers? I wonder whether that would have improved the final coat on so much of that machine.
What are you hoping to get for that it?
I just found ur channel and im liking it A lot. I like where u dont edit out the not starting and any mistakes u might make A lot of channels just edit out the bad and all we see is the machine cleaned up and running good after they spent half a day fixing it. Ive thought about starting to do service and minor repaìrs no engine rebuilds or major work. Do u just do the flippingor do u service for the public??¿ do u do 2 strokes??? Most shops or at least a lot has quit taking ìn2 strokes whats your opinion on my business plan. Just service and minor repairß????,
Hi! I’m so glad you’re enjoying my channel. Yes, I try to leave in the bad stuff too. It can be a messy process sometimes, and I make mistakes too. I try to learn from them and let the audience know what I’ve learned.
I only flip machines right now, no repairs for the public. I’m a full time teacher, so most of my schedule is booked with that job
I cut and gride down the shalfts on those auto elect fuel shutoff seilenode under those carbs and reinstall them for sealing purposes only on the bowls, and remove the seat totally and install a manual fuel line shut off,,no more problems with starting as you well know by now
Nice job Kyle. What kind of apparatus do you have with your chains. I have a 3 car garage with finished ceilings and I would be afraid to hang a John Deere 425 and a 345. I do have some trees in the back yard with some pretty nice size branches. Thanks.
It’s just a 1 ton chain hoist from tractor supply
Could've sanded the old points and the flywheel. I fixed my neighbor's roto tiller that way.
carb cleaner and starting fluid are different. get yourself some john deere ether, stuff is by far the best on the market.
coil posts can be fixed- supper glue and jb weld- i have fixed many
Good to know! Thanks
I think the seat safety switch works only if the blades are engaged.
Possibly. It’s a little hard to tell with this machine. The seat safety seems to be intermittent
dude, dont you own a spark checker or compression gauge?
2:33 Vlv600 vector Tecumsuh. I have a newer version of that 6.0, a 6.5 and a 6.75 hp.
It looked to me that, when you cleaned the carb, the float was not even close to parallel with the carb body; this would cause a degree of fuel starvation = engine hunting.
Could have been. Either way, the new carb fixed it!
I really like your videos. You have a great demeanor. Do you know where I can find the craftsman decal that is on the side of the tractor near the foot rest? It usually denotes the engine and the horse power.
I appreciate the compliment, thanks! About the decal, I’m not sure where you might be able to buy a decal that specific. As far as I know, they don’t sell those stickers that display the specific horse power
IN THE 1970'S WE HAD AN YELLOW/BEIGE LT10.
THE CLAMP-ON SNOW PLOW MOUNT SUCKED
I’d like to see that!
Looks like new...
Thank you!
Use jb weld on the float I've had luck with it
Personally I would have painted it on some cardboard👈👍😁
Sorry, what would you have painted on cardboard?
On that LT4000, Great job. How much and where do I Pick-it-up?
I’m in CT. What state are you from?
👍
Pressure clean it all
You are over heating the motor with the shroud off . I think the carburetor is going to need cleaned more
First thing i do is a pressure clean when i pick them up
Awesome! Make a video and post to RUclips. I’m sure other people would love to see how you do it!
Who made craftsman ?? Mtd?? Ayp?? Do h know
Where do u livè àt mate??¿
Its got a valve cover gasket leaking
Sheared flywheel key.
I thought so too. But, nope
Kyle, what part of Connecticut are you from?
I just sent you an email!
You've got to be kidding! That's not a restoration! That's just a repair with a paint job!
Restoration means the way it came out of the original factory!!!
Watch how Squatch253 does a restoration!
He takes every single bolt and washer and nut and screw and every single part off of the tractor and make sure that every part that goes back on is exactly the same as it did from the original factory as much as humanly possible!
That is a restoration!
What you did is a repair with a paint job!
Thanks for watching and for commenting. I likely won’t be going to the lengths of Squatch253. This 1991 LT 4000 is hardly deserving of the effort that he puts into those classic farm tractors. Considering the resell value of this simple homeowner lawn tractor, I think my restoration was more than enough. It’s all just for fun and to stay busy and to learn!
Are u selling the craftsman
Yeah. I was going to list it on marketplace in the early spring. So right now it’s not up for sale. I’m looking to get $500 for it
Spark is at the wrong time
Timing was good. I checked
Coil is out on upside down, firing in the wrong time...
A rusty fly wheel will stop it from firing
Most knowledgable engine mechanics say rust on the flywheel has no effect whatsoever on firing; rust on the coil mounting posts, on the other hand, could.
won't run without the shroud ,it's got a gov.
Why do you keep running the engine without the shroud Don't you realize how these things cool?
Running that engine for long periods of time with the air shroud off is, actually, running it with no cooling......not a good idea.
Thank you
