I’ve been fixing small engines since I was 14 and am now in school heavy duty mechanics. I like that you include the diagnostic process as well as how you fix it. Bang on
Machinery restorer uploads new video ,made my weekend ,cheer mate 😎 huge inspiration to why I got into fixing and restoring old lawnmowers and. Small engines ,all the best ,from Ireland
Holy shit.... So I randomly stumbled upon this video after doing some small engine repair research. As soon as I heard that voice I knew who it was, and a quick scroll revealed I was correct. I was both shocked and excited. I've been watching daggerwin for years to scratch my FS itch, and never knew this channel existed.... Super stoked!
Gotta love when an "American John Deere" sticks a Kawasaki in it because they know the engine is vastly superior to things that they don't make anymore.. Amazing life cranker bud. I love watching these old machines get life back into them.
America engine quality went down once the flat head engines were no longer allowed by emissions. Kawasaki OHV engines are literally bulletproof and were an awesome reliable replacement for those reliable flathead engines.
I bailed out (left the USA) in 1965 and at that time "Made in USA" was equal to "cheap and dirty." Americans who could afford them bought German cars, radios and machines. My dad's 1961 Chevrolet rusted out by 1965. My mom drove my 1959 VW until the early 1970s.
All fun and games until John deer throws in a Vtwin 22.5hp Briggs made in the US. I mean yeah Kawasaki’s were good but ever since the new Briggs V twins and Kohlers… Kawasaki gets to sit on the back burner making 2 stroke pit bike motors 😂
John Deere still uses Kawasaki and Yanmar in their premium models such as the X500 and X700 series and they are both Japanese made. Their budget Home Depot models get the Briggs Vtwin engines.
Looking forward to seeing the next video on rebuild the carburetor, flushed out the cooling system and change the oil and filter. This engine and transmission would be nice donor to a good rider mower that the metal is in better condition. Enjoyed the video and have a Blessed One Sir.
Wow this is the same JD I have. It's crazy that mine is in perfect shape and this is one is so neglected but yet this one runs better than mine does...
@@itsnetts Yeah I cleaned it up (it was full of shellac) and it runs better but still stalls once in a while. It does need a throttle adjustment because the idle begins to surge so I don't know.
I've taught high school here Sydney Australia for 25 years, also Industrial Arts, Metalwork, Woodwork, Electronics,Physics, Chemistry and Science. I've been repairing small engines since I was 12. I repair most things, they generally are simple to repair. i am a Material Scientist. Your style of presentation is excellent. You do not go overboard when the engines start , as they generally should start when given the correct requirements. You are comprehensive as evident by your success. I use white vinegar to remove ALL rust , requiring wire brushing say every 6 hours. I do not us rust remover. White vinegar cost $1.20 for 2 litres and I keep using it for a along time. It is the cheapest way to derust, but it take s time. A suggestion. You do not need to be emotive about the parts. They either are dirty or broken. You are repairing metal, plastic and rubber. But I have to admit, at times some machinery has it's own character, and simply can be difficult to play ball and start. It has hapened to me when an engine has fuel, spark, air, and timing all correct and the engine refuses to start.
This is great thanks for the video I’ll be working on an old vintage green machine weed whacker and then I have a leaf blower that needs repaired thanks again I look forward to the videos you also helped to inspire me to become a lawn mower mechanic I now work at a shop for my job and I love it.
I have a John Deere 185 (Predecessor to the lx178 I think) and I payed 400$ for it back in April and it has been a very reliable lawn tractor. Great video! 👍
I guess I was raised to appreciate good equipment. Even with minimal care they can last YEARS. It doesn't matter if it's a tractor or a Vacuum cleaner. You obviously share this way of thinking.
Good video. When I encountered engines in that condition when I was doing a lot of this work, I would mix 30 weight oil with kerosene. About half & half. As long as you don't run the engine at high R.P.M.'s and for just long enough to get some heat in it, it doesn't hurt anything. The result is quite impressive in regard to the crud that drains out.
we want to see the video where you completely restore this lawn mower, I'm watching it from Brazil even though I don't understand your language but I like your videos
What amazes me is this guy does this kind of work in a shed that most Americans wouldn't use for more than a push mower, holiday decorations, and some garden tools that will never get used.
Next time you can put the pickup tube in a ziplock bag fill with evaporust. This is good for odd shaped items. Plus less evaporust is used. Great video.
You definitely got lucky with this machine, theses engine can become huge money pits when they get older, primarily the ignition system and the parts are not cheap. I’ve never seen an older John Deere rust out this bad, the newer ones yes but not these ones.
I junked the single cylinder version of this machine a couple of years ago. I should have sent it to you, all the fenders and everything were complete.
Great video again thanks! The commercial here in the states says nothing runs like a deere lol. Should say a deerasaki lol. I’ve been a fan of Kawasaki for years, always had good luck with them except for my current one. My kx250f likes to eat valves lol, but that’s always inherent in this engine. Cheers!
WOW!!! that sure started out as a pile of junk. Love the way that you get things going/running. just watching your videos is inspiring me to take a crack at getting an old ride on mower (that i have) going again or at least doing my best to get it running again. :)
after sitting for so long im sure a bit of run time will seat the rings again and then there will be no smoke but im sure you already know that greetings from holland :))
You need to make these more often, favorite channel on youtube. I liked shared and obvisously commented. these videos are so good and informational. Make these more often please please please!!
I’ve got a lx176 with the Kawasaki single cylinder engine (14 hp). It’s been all maintenance, never have had to replace a single thing ever since I got it about 12 years ago.
Great video, and amazing it didn't needed more work to be done before starting up after been sitting outside for 10 years. The smoke could be due to stuck piston rings, and after being running for awhile they might get lose again. Did you do a compression test?
I love your show. It's well produced, your pace and clarity of diction are just right, and detailed explanations make this a great RUclips. I tell my wife that I use your show for my R&R. Do you know when the 2nd video for this segment will be out? Also, do you sell most of the stuff you repair? Thanks
I have one of these mowers. I buy my engine parts from a US mail order company called Jack's Small Engines. Fun fact: a Citroen C1 oil filter fits straight on. Same thread and size. Edit: I found the plastic rocker covers deform nearest the hot exhaust pipes which leads to oil leaking onto the exhaust. I found I had burning oil for the first few minutes then it would clear but repeat next time it was used. The solution is a pair of brand new rocker covers, gasket seals and also replacement little metal spacer/anti-crush tubes to bolt the covers down without deforming the rocker covers. No more oil leaks or smoke. Hope this helps.
I was looking at one of these in my dads shop at his work today, I was surprised it’s water cooled, funny to see that this was recommended on my RUclips lol
New subscriber. She certainly is a runner thanks to the engine being a Kawasaki. Superb, premium small engines. These videos are long but are interesting the whole way through kind of like a good movie. You really have a way with sorting out issues and not wasting time but doing the right things first to remedy a problem. Not many people have your abilities which seem to be fading rapidly in western societies. In the US, mechanics have become parts replacers or scrappers more than fixit people but in the age of designed obsolescence it is entirely their fault. It has become cheaper and overall more cost effective to simply replace an entire thing than to repair it.
Wow that’s really rusty! I have an LX188 very similar to that and it had a 48 inch mower deck that had basically nothing left. That model has the 44 inch piranha deck. They were great little mowers. The Kawasaki liquid cooled engines did have some cam failure problems with a plastic cam gear but other than that they work nice. I work at a Deere dealership. My lx188 sat for two years outside in a cold environment with the battery unhooked. Hooked the battery back up and it fired right up. I put a 42” mower on it and have been using it daily. It’s beat up, hood is shot but it works great.
You have the perfect voice and technique for these types of video, they're very watchable, even for those without a mechanical mind. Keep doing it!
I agree 💯! Very entertaining. I’v learnEd so much watching his videos.

Nice series! I love seeing these older John Deere's on here and would love to see more of them!

Always love the time and effort you put in to these videos. They are always very enjoyable to watch. Looking forward to the next one.
Never knew a motor that's been sitting for 10 years could run this smooth. Great job!
well, the engine of my scooter wich was sitting still for nearly 16 years runs insanely good for its age
They ran that poor John Deere into the ground big time but glad you got hold of this classic mower
Great bit of logical troubleshooting, well done. Looking forward to the cooling system flush to see what it offers up.

You are a great mechanic. It’s a pleasure to watch you!
Always happy to see a new video from you. Saving it for Sunday morning coffee.
Best entertaining small engine channel hands down! Keep em coming Taryl!
Was worried you weren’t going to talk in this video, when I heard you speak I was like “yessss!”

America engine quality went down once the flat head engines were no longer allowed by emissions. Kawasaki OHV engines are literally bulletproof and were an awesome reliable replacement for those reliable flathead engines.
Briggs and Kohler OHV engines just aren't built to last unfortunately. Chinese parts and poor build quality.

Sounds like your carburetor needs a cleanup/tune-up.
@@itsnetts Yeah I cleaned it up (it was full of shellac) and it runs better but still stalls once in a while. It does need a throttle adjustment because the idle begins to surge so I don't know.
@@anythingwithanengine8736 Perhaps a bit higher idle? Idk. Cool that you got it running better though!
Same but mine runs good
Yeah it runs nice to think how long its been sitting out. That engine amazes me. Love ur video's
Never seen one rusted out this bad!
Wow nice restoration
I missed your content. Thanks for another great video.
I love your videos they are so entertaining .I get so excited when a new one comes out. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Nothing runs like a Deere. Very good informational video.
These videos have some of my favourite content & you present them extremely well.
The transaxle in that mower is a really good one. Worth its weight in gold.
The British Mustie1! Great content. Please keep them coming. Steve in Virginia USA.

Wowwww restoration that takes time, effort, and thought, so perfect👍
Nice one, stick a tow hitch on the back and its the perfect addition to any garage, boat yard, etc.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
I love these lawn mower tractors. They're just cute little tractors
And tractors are cool

Great stuff. I'm addicted to your videos, keep it up!!!
Those are great engines!!! Im.from the states and people are always looking for those engines.
I'd love to see this video followed up with a full rebuild on this mower.
whoever said you staged your videos is a goof.. Youre very good worker and take your time with machines, keep up the good work
Watching this on my other account thinking 'this chap sounds just like Daggerwin'. Watched most of your gaming vids. Keep up the good work Sir!

hearing those goldfinches at the start is such a sound of summer

You definitely got lucky with this machine, theses engine can become huge money pits when they get older, primarily the ignition system and the parts are not cheap.
I’ve never seen an older John Deere rust out this bad, the newer ones yes but not these ones.
Just worked on one the other day, had tan oil in it...blown head gasket. I informed the owner and left it at that. I Not doing a head gasket job.
Awesome video as usual!
Hoping for a full restoration series on it, great work getting it running. New parts easy to source?
Great work, thank God for plastic gas tanks😊
Great video looking forward to seeing the next video 👍
For cleaning out the varnished old fuel use acetone, eats it really well.
I junked the single cylinder version of this machine a couple of years ago. I should have sent it to you, all the fenders and everything were complete.
It has a very strange washing machine noise when running and it's not burning oil, love your videos I find them very therapeutic.

How on earth is it that rusty? Was it washed with salt water daily? I've had one sit outside for years and never seen that much rust
Naptha to remove crystalized fuel... Great channel... very enjoyable fare...Long clinical swabs can retrieve cylinder samples...
Hi, OH MY ! Poor "Deere" , Bin Road Hard and put up wet! Hope it Runs. Good luck.
U guys must get acid rain over there because here in the states it would take like 30 years left outside for it to look like that.
You're like the Mustie1 of mowers. You guys would get along great.

hmm, as a former John Deere staff, I'd say it needs a new head light bulb, maybe a bit more
Your voice and accent are calming.
I have a large gallon bucket of Evaporust that comes with a dipping basket, amazing stuff!👍
The fuel pump is cam-driven. The seal or diaphragm may be leaking fuel into the crankcase.
I'm doing my first lawnmower repair I have a husqvarna and a landline that is getting repaired I'm hoping to make a racing lawnmower soon

Good question. He probably buys/find them online or in scrap yards. He probably sells them for profit or keeps it’s for fun.
