      Andy Lucas Couldn’t agree more. Growing up I was fortunate enough to have a father that was handy and took the time to teach me a few things. Today it seems too many fathers aren’t in the home and those that are don’t take the time to teach their children how to do things. Just another reason why I believe schools need to bring back shop class. Anyway, Nathan great video thanks for sharing.

      True. However, not every lawn and garden equipment are "gems". Higher priced equipment tends to have more quality and more likely people will take care of it and have it repaired. People by "cheap" and you get what you pay for and just dump it. I have seen videos of newer equipment and repair. Complete junk, made in China with plastic internal engine parts. Not worth it.

    • @MikeGillett58
      @MikeGillett58 5 лет назад +4

      Same here, I've worked on these engines since the 60's, if it really is a Briggs I've never had a problem getting them running again. I also learned SEA FOAM gas stabilizer. Keeps the gas from gumming up the carburetor. The 4 on the engine cover, what is that supposed to mean, certainly not 4.5 hp? That is one big motor for such a small piece of crap Murray... but I would gladly rebuild that machine, and use it for the next 20 years, bought my last mower in 1987, I've thought about changing the oil once, but I went and sat down instead. The air filter is a different story, they crumble at some point, don't want that to get into the carb. The first time I used the brand new mower I hit a rock and it clunked for a couple of years. I finally thought I might have bent the blade. Replaced the blade runs perfectly. I have sheared the flywheel key once and replaced it. The next time I sheared the key, I just moved the flywheel back into place tighten the nut, that was about 5 years ago. I keep thinking one day I might have to move that flywheel again, don't think I will ever buy another key for it. It works better to just not hit things with it.

    Many years ago, my father bought a Briggs and Stratton mower from Sears to replace a Toro. Started the first time but afterwards, the mower wouldn't start so I figured out it was a carburetor problem. I did the same as you and spray carburetor cleaner in it and it started. It always needed to be primed every time we used it. After about 2 years of always fussing with the mower it stopped all together and wouldn't start, we gave up and bought a Tecumseh mower which started every time. I now own Honda mowers and I would never buy a B&S mower. According to a mower salesman at the time, B&S built unreliable mowers. In our case, it was true. I'm sure the junk yard has plenty of discarded B&S mowers for you work on and after awhile you may donate this one. Thanks for the video.

    I have a yardworks, briggs, that was given to me. My mother upgraded,so I took it off her hands. She had it for 9 years, then Ive had it for 8 years. Ive never changed the spark plug, only put oil in it once, and never cleaned the carb. Use reg gas, and I have always left it outside everyday during those years. Good old Canadian cold winters.
    Guess what, it starts with a prime on first pull everytime. Blows my mind. I also run over branches that stall it out, rocks, etc. Never sharpen the blade either. Shes a unicorn 👍.

      Al Gorel plastic carburetors are not new. I’ve seen them in the 70s on lawnboy mowers. Even on the older “good” Briggs engines and they still work. The idea is they are not prone to corrosion.

    They put gas in them over and over, Never changing the oil, never changing the air filter.
    They just run them till they wont start.
    I have got many old lawn mowers running after people throw them away.
    One had me stumped.
    It had black sludge clogging the muffler pipe.
    I took the head off, and the engine was filled with black sludge.

    My neighbor showed up a week ago with a 1988 Lawnboy mower. It is electric start and has the bagger. I noticed the plastic plate was snapped and the rod for supporting the bag is missing but honestly, a trip to the homedepot for a piece of metal rod works. I am doing to epoxy the plastic plate together after pinning it together. I was shocked at this mowers over all condition. Other than some paint touch ups and I sharpened the blade. The battery reads 12.35, so its eather been replaced or its a miracle. I am going to hit goodwill for a wall wort charger because the charger wasnt with it. I think it must have a self charging system. I am always amazed at how long a two cycle mower will last over todays crap. I may even sell my Honda Harmony and keep this old smoky stover! If I cannot sell it, I think I will keep it. I can still get parts for it too.

    Every mower I've ever personally owned has been given to me for free. Like this one, all it usually takes is a little time and effort and they run like new. In my experience, the engine will usually outlast the rest of the mower. Running it without oil is about all that will break one. Other than that, 99% of the time, its something simple like the carb being gunked up or spark plug has gone bad, because the carb is gunked up lol.

    I picked up a Honda that was on the curb. Owner said it had trouble with it, leaking oil and other problems. It was nasty with oil all over. I took it home since it was almost same model as mine. I started it and it was fine. I think oil cap was not tight when he used it. The last time. Blades where all messed up. So I cleaned it and put new oil, adjusted the self propel and it rinsed perfect .

All I done was clean the tank and the carburetor which is just like the one on here. Then put it all together, put new fuel in it. And it fired in three pulls and ran. Running like a champ now.
