Thank you SO Much , I had the same problem with that same engine , today , tried everything else , then did what you suggested , and the mower is running like new again .... Many Thanks !!!!!
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video. It is so unbelievably rare to find a straightforward video that explains steps/parts correctly. Most videos are either "here's the exact steps for this single model with zero explanation," or they go to the other extreme of "here's a PhD explanation of how a carb works - now that you know each molecular compound of the components in your mower you should be able to easily fix it".... Why can't more people be like you? You emphasized and explained key factors with as many or little details are necessary to understand, other minor details included help build an overarching picture of the problem. Thank you for being a great RUclips creator!
Thank you so very much for doing this video. My son (16 years old) cuts the neighbor's grass with their lawnmower and it had this same problem. We watched this video and my son decided on his own to try and fix it. Turns out that it was the exact same lawnmower. Long story short, my son cleaned the carb and it runs great. Keep up the great work. I must say that your video is very informative without the need for talking.......genius!
My mower was doing this. My grass was so long it just cut out on contact. I never fixed any kind of engine in my life but i am very good with my hands so thought "what the hell, let me try this." Boom! Mower fixed. Turning over with regularity and ease and my lawn has been tamed. Thank you so much. 🏆
Excellent video, well lit to give great clarity to every step of the process and no irritating waffling. Just saved myself a load of money by serviced my 675 Briggs and Stratton engine with confidence after watching video. Also saved the six week waiting list at my local lawnmower service centre. Well done and thanks.
Yes, I am the neighborhood fix it guy with the help of RUclips and videos like yours Nathan . Fixed my neighbors dishwasher a while ago and saved him around a thousand bucks! all that was wrong was a $3.00 seal. He has a PHD, but he considers me a genius. LOL Do you get paid in pizza?
I have a BSME but I had to watch a few RUclips videos to learn how to fix a similar surging problem with my TroyBilt mower. It was the bolt that holds the float bowl was plugged. A blast of compressed air that I bought to clean my computer and the use of a sewing needle to clean the passages and it was perfect. It's almost 25 years old and it starts on the first or second pull.
Thank you for making this. Mine worked on the first pull after this cleaning. One note from my experience: Upon reassembly, the jet assembly required a huge amount of force to re-install but I did get it in. Then I found the choke plate could not move. Why: The venturi had migrated into the path of the choke blade. I then removed the jet assembly, slide the venturi back into position and the jets reinstalled with only a little pressure needed. This was a very helpful video.
Good video. Thanks for posting. One tip I'd pass on is don't blow air into the fuel inlet pipe from the outside of the carb. That little rubber seat for the needle can get dislodged and go flying. Always blow through the bowl side to prevent that.
Awesome videos man. I just got a Husqvarna 580 backpack leaf blower from a guy throwing it in a dumpster on my way home from work. He said it had a bad bearing somewhere in the motor. Well.....I asked to take it and he laughed but said sure. I brought it home and found out it was missing 4 bolts and the fan. $30 later and this almost $600 blower is running like new. Kind of wish I had a camera to record the breakdown, fix and reassembly like you do. Keep up the great work and I’ll be sure to stay tuned for more.
I’ll take the white plastic jet further apart. The top comes off and the ball will push out. Sometimes debris will hide there also. Great repair and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the video was very informative. I always dump the gas in a clear container to see if there is any water in the gas. Water is heavier than gas so it will always be on the bottom and easier to see in a clear container. Thanks again
Cleaning the carb as you demonstrate is the easy, hoped for solution to surging. There are other things that can cause the same problem however. In my mower a brand new carb was installed and the entire mower checked by a qualified mechanic. Cranked excellent and ran well enough to get my front lawn cut but half way through the rear yard the surging started extremely bad and eventually the mower reduced itself to barely even running at all, blowing out black smoke from the exhaust due to a way too rich fuel mixture. The new carb was put on due to the mower not wanting to stay running on slopes and being difficult to crank. A new fuel line was also installed with the new carb. Thus since it is getting a far too rich mixture and the choke seems to be staying closed, it smacks of problems with either the governor being stuck in the full forward position or the heat control closing the choke despite the mower being hot from use. It's even possible the rubber crankcase vent tube is cracked and allowing in too much air which may be causing the carb to attempt to compensate by enriching the fuel mixture to keep the machine running. Note that my mower is running way too rich, not too lean. This indicates the gas line or the in tank fuel filter isn't stopped up with trash and restricting gas flow. We know the motor itself works just fine, as the mower did initially crank and run properly for about 30 minutes. The point being, everyone on RUclips seems to enjoy doing carb cleaning videos. Most of the time when you see the carb being cleaned, there is virtually nothing really needing cleaning. No sediment in the bowl, no stopped up jets, nothing that was an obvious reason that would have been causing the surging, hard cranking, or poor performance. We are just asked to believe that cleaning the carb will solve the problems of surging when many times that isn't really the entire problem. Typically at the end of a carb cleaning video we see a one pull start, a few feet of cutting operation, and a motor shut down. My mower did all that immediately after the new carb was installed. The real test is does a simple carb cleaning end the problem for an extended period of time. I'm not a fan of cheap all plastic carbs. But I am equally not a fan of mowers that attempt to self control all their operation settings. I preferred the days when mowers had operator controlled chokes and throttles that could be set as desired and when carbs were all metal. BTW, for those who might want to know we have a local station that sells non-ethanol gas. Not a drop of ethanol gas has ever been put in any of my lawn equipment or other motorized tools so ethanol isn't the culprit either. My mower has the 7.25 version of this same B & S engine which is simply a slightly bigger motor but with all the same basic parts. Anyone have any further suggestions for what I should do next, I'm all ears.
@ Trehan Creek Outdoors I am in the same boat, cleaned the original carb, replaced the carb and it still hunts like Elmer Fudd does Bugs Bunny. I can see the governor going back and forth like crazy. I am at a loss such a piece of junk, my original toro ran like a top.
For a while, I thought that that was how they built them. I had two mowers in a row that did that and I figured it was normal. I saw another channel's video on fixing it. I tried unsuccessfully, to do a quick cleaning to fix mine. Went looking for the video and then found yours and figured I may as well get another opinion.
Excellent video mate, just what i need for my BRAND NEW Honda mower, which has this issue !!!!! What a piece of junk !!! They definitely don't build them like they used to. My dad had a cast iron Hayter Merlin, lasted him 40 years plus and never went wrong apart from a couple of new throttle cables over the years and a new rear roller. Don't think he ever bothered servicing it either... Cheers 👍
If nobody has mentioned this, some fuel additives prevent the jet from becoming restricted with varnish and other crud.. The past few years, I add 1-Tbs each of Marvels Mystery Oil and 2-Cycle oil to a 2-gallon gas can and this stuff dissolves the buildup and the engine runs trouble free all summer. This has saved me a lot of time fixing fuel problems and then I run them out of fuel for long term storage.
That's my exact mower. You saved me buying a new plastic carb. When I bought this I couldn't figure out why there wasn't a fuel shut off. Manual didn't mention the carb drain plug either for winter storage. Don't like the auto choke or no-throttle. They just assume nobody nobody knows how to drive a mover, and when it quits in a few years, it's disposable.
I like your small engine videos, but prefer when you talk so I can play them in the background while I work. It enables me to tune in at points of interest. Thanks. You helped me get my pressure washer running.
I've noticed they are using plastic carburetors more & more these days. Like you mentioned, I saw another video where the guy had to make the main jet a slightly larger to fully eliminate the surging issue from returning. Thanks for the video, it's that time of year.
Awesome video 👍 like someone else mentioned very clear to follow with simple instructions, I have just FIXED mine, so pleased with myself 😁 thanks Nathan.
Very useful video. Had similar hunting issue with my Craftsman mower, but also sputtering and lack of power. Removed carb and cleaned per video. Not shown on video, I had an additional white plastic ring or "collar" located in carb throat which fell out after the jet removed. In re-assembling this part needed to be fitted back in the carb throat with the hole in the "collar" aligned for the jet to fit through. Also in re-assembling the bowl cover to the carb body you have to correctly orient the cover, in case you forget which way, there is a very small indentation in the cover which accomodates (clears) the top of the jet, otherwise the cover is 180 degrees misaligned and the bowl cover will not seat. Might be obvious to more mechanical types, but these are some things I discovered. Cheers...
Thank you Nathan, I have the same model engine that was doing the same thing. I followed your steps, put everything back together, and the mower started on the first pull.
Thank you for making this video Nathan, I was excited to watch as your mower had the same symptoms as mine. I followed your process and behold I now have a smooth running mower.
Had the same issue with the same engine and +- the same carb without that auto choke. Cleaned an helped a bit. Did not know that it can be further disassembled - will do that tomorrow, thanks!
My neighbor brought over his troybilt 21" mower I found the fuel line disintagrated from the inside with tiny ,stringy black, fibers .I replaced it and it started and then she started spooling up and down ,I put a new carb on it and it did the same thing. I'm still fkng with it.
@@FixingWithPassion I sprayed a litter ether on the head around the intake manifold and it evened out. So i think it may be leaking at the O-ring on the plastic intake. I will let you know how it comes out.
I have same issue. But problem is in float. I would have to insert little piece of plastic so needle would be slightly higher. Also float was leaky and in my country you can't find replacement. Only whole carburetor so I had to patch it. I would see results tomorrow.
One thing to those having to deal with these carburetors. If you can't get the metering assembly to go back in, it's the white plastic ring in the carb throat, that falls out sometimes. It has a hole for the tube to come into the throat and it has to be aligned. Why it doesn't have a keyway or notch to get it right is beyond me. It's a little difficult to align since you can't see inside and it has to be perfect.
This is a good video for someone wanting to DIY fix their own mower, but for a shop those plastic carburetors are inexpensive and I just replace them. Saves the owner money and saves my time. Also depends on what type of mower it is as well, most people buy throw away weed trimmers and lawnmowers. I’ve literally junked out several perfectly working and running mowers and trimmers due to this.
Nathan good job. Now I know what to do with my lawn mower. I had a Murray self propelled mower once, it had plastic drive gears that cost a $100 to replace. Kept the motor scraped the rest.
A consumer marketing special . Flags and made in America decals. If you want a great mower , buy a Honda , not a mower with a Honda engine , but an aluminum deck real Honda mower, the kind the gardeners use. If had one for 35 years and it works as good as it did the day I bought it.
That is what I finally did! East start first or second pull! There is no bigger waste of my time than trying to maintain crappy equipment. One day it dawned on me “if I am going to do the labor on my 2 acre lawn, I will pay myself what I would pay someone else”. I used that money to buy good equipment! Enough said!
good video. Totally got caught out with the plastic carbs. Just saw briggs and Stratton and assumed the quality I was used to back in the day. I guess times have changed!
They are more quality now. It's not plastic it's composite it has many advantages. If it's not steel it doesn't mean it's bad. I have lawnmower that has steel deck and my neighbor had one that has plastic or composite one. So the question is what's more quality some would say the steel one cause steel is stronger than plastic...Well guess what on steel lawn mower a wheel fell of and when i looked under there was a huge rust hole (that wouldn't happen if grass wasn't hidden at that spot). Steel has its advantages for strength but deck doesn't really need much strength so other materials are fine to use.
Thank you. Without this i wouldn't have known that the jet comes out and apart. One of the jets is so small that even a wire brush wire is too big and I used a strand of electrical wire. Only thing was I didn't realise the plastic venturi (not on your model, inside the bore in front of the butterfly) falls out and after finding it on the floor I couldn't understand why the mower ran so bad. Once in and carb dismantled for the tenth time It now runs well. Yes horrible carb. Actually very cheap to buy new. Not a bad idea to have a spare.
I have the Briggs and Stratton 450e, its a very similar motor to yours. I did everything you did, fitted a new spark plug and air filter but it still surges/hunting.
Yah I don’t care for those carbs or the new OHV Briggs. The quantum style was the best they had in my opinion. Most of the time I end up breaking the plastic pierce that comes out so I don’t take it out from the white cartridge.. Good job there , your are very methodical in how you work👏
great video. love the part where you explained to scribe the aluminum body of the carb for better seal, awesome. One small suggestion, would be to put some fuel in the tank to swirl around and then drain for any possible debris, especially during disassembly, but still a great video to my favorites it goes... ; )
Are these style of carbs known to go bad as in just wear out after a few years? Because I had more trouble with these carb surgeing up and down or doing that causing the mower to die. I never had much trouble out of the older style carbs on the Brigges and Stratton engine. Ive cleand out my carb / gas tank, fresh gas and mower will run fine but just a week later to maybe 2 weeks later this last time, the mower again starts surgeing up and down sometimes as your mowing it might clear up for a little bit but then start again. Ive even put in new spark plug and air filter. Any idea's of what to do next am thinking replace the carb?
my mower does the same thing, i cleaned the carb completely, new plug, new gas, new oil change, and new air filter... still cant figure out wtf is going on here?! any suggestions? could a low governor cause this issue?
9:43 watch your eyes. I had glasses on, but the cleaner sprayed out and it was a money shot, right into my eye. Luckily I blinked fast enough and a good rinse took care of it. After that I used the full face mask.
I've got the exact same engine that is hunting. Cleaned the carb 2-3 times and it still hunted. Put a new OEM Briggs carb on it and it still has the same problem. The butterfly flickers back and forth and if I manipulate the throttle, it will tunnel but then starts to backfire. I've been told to check the sheer pin but haven't had a chance yet. Any suggestions???
my mower keeps doing the same thing but ive cleaned the carb 3 times and when i dump like star bright into it it runs smother so i think its fuel but idk what the issue is excatly? any ideas?
If applying some choke clears the issue you know it is a fuel delivery issue. Partial restriction in the fuel circuit. Compounding the issue are these engines running ever leaner. It doesn't take much to interrupt that fuel flow through tiny jets. Even the revered Honda's sometimes get to hunting. Fortunately with them you can change the jet... or open them up if you have the means. Ethanol has not been in any of my equipment for about 6 years. Not a single carb issue since I made that decision.
Nathan Rohrbough I just bought a Troy Bill model series 830. Has electric start and self propelled. I’m pretty excited. It starts up on the first pull which is the first time in my life that’s happened. So I assume the carb is in good condition. I bought it from an older gentleman and it’s been sitting a while.
Good video, my mower (same plastic carb)....Brand new and after 4 months of use would not start, cleaned as in the video, still no start, bought a NEW carb and now it runs but "hunts".....any advice? Thanks
At 1:20 he points out the engine is trying to find the right air and fuel mixture, then at 17:49 he puts the same filthy air filter he pulled off earlier right back on the intake. Smooth move.
Was testing the motor to see if it was going to run before wasting money on something that does not run. Always one step ahead! Got a new one now. Thanks for watching.
Nathan, I have a different model, same issue though, with a new carb, second actually, returned the first in the event it was defective. Any chance this could be caused by a worn governor spring or bent governor spring bracket?

Thank You very much. I did it. it works very good now. Thank You!
Thanks for all your videos. I've got a little Briggs mower that surges sometimes so now with this info I'll fix it.
Nice!!
I would like to suggest to fill your mower up with a funnel that has a filter on it also ! thank you for the great video
o k.
Thank you for this great video. I was able to resolve the hunting issue with my MTD Honda lawn mower.
Nice!!
Nathan good job. Now I know what to do with my lawn mower. I had a Murray self propelled mower once, it had plastic drive gears that cost a $100 to replace. Kept the motor scraped the rest.
Nice!
I remember the walk-behind aluminum deck Honda mowers. The aluminum deck was a casting, and when struck, tended to shatter.
Thanks. Great video!!! All 👍 👍 👍
good video. Totally got caught out with the plastic carbs. Just saw briggs and Stratton and assumed the quality I was used to back in the day. I guess times have changed!
Great point!
Thanks Nate!
Hey!
Thanks Nathan, This mower has the same engine as mine. Now I know how to fix!!
I have a Murray mower also and it has that plastic carb. I like the older style carbs with the " bowl" and a 1/2" bolt securing it.
Thank you buddy!!
Thank you buddy!!
Mate awesome informational video my mower sounded the same jumped into RUclips and found your video, super helpful
Only a year old? Mine would still look BRAND new. People don't take care of their stuff anymore...
Right!
My neighbor has this same carb in his lawnmower. Thank you for the help
Great job Nathan 👍!
A man of few words but that hold music has got to go
That’s exactly what I was going to say! Ha.
Thank you so much, just followed your video and repaired my mower God Bless.
;)
Thank you very much!
Big 10-4 back door!
These carbs need cleaning every year or two, but it’s very simple and easy to do 😊😊😊
Nice!
Thank You.
Word!~
Good video. I have gone to ethanol free gas for my mower as well as added some carb cleaner to the fuel which has helped it run better.
For anyone looking to make this repair but only having SAE socket sizes, 5/16 and 9/32 work perfectly!
I like the no talking, get right to business
Great Video, and you didn't have to say a word!! Music was decent but it was putting me to sleep.
Me too...ha ha...
I have the Briggs and Stratton 450e, its a very similar motor to yours. I did everything you did, fitted a new spark plug and air filter but it still surges/hunting.
Another great video in youtube. Great fix. Thanks.
Thanks for this. I was able to get my lawnmower running enough to cut, but it still surges
Excellent!
Yah I don’t care for those carbs or the new OHV Briggs. The quantum style was the best they had in my opinion.
Most of the time I end up breaking the plastic pierce that comes out so I don’t take it out from the white cartridge..
Good job there , your are very methodical in how you work👏
I've broke two of them accidentally bumping into things while mowing...ugh...
Good job Nath.
;D
Awesome, the best step by step video I have ever seen.
Cool!
great video. love the part where you explained to scribe the aluminum body of the carb for better seal, awesome.
One small suggestion, would be to put some fuel in the tank to swirl around and then drain for any possible debris, especially during disassembly, but still a great video to my favorites it goes... ; )
Nice!
The kill cable they always break it seems.
I had a mower 6.25 series also, to fix the problem I ordered B&S jet main # 592805, installed in plastic carb, mower doesn't surge anymore.
You said you opened up the jet ? what did you do to do that
my mower does the same thing, i cleaned the carb completely, new plug, new gas, new oil change, and new air filter... still cant figure out wtf is going on here?! any suggestions? could a low governor cause this issue?
Hello Nathan I really enjoy your videos as an autistic adult. I enjoy fixing faults like those on my own equipment
Any suggestions???
my mower keeps doing the same thing but ive cleaned the carb 3 times and when i dump like star bright into it it runs smother so i think its fuel but idk what the issue is excatly? any ideas?
👍 great job. Thank you.
;D
If applying some choke clears the issue you know it is a fuel delivery issue. Partial restriction in the fuel circuit. Compounding the issue are these engines running ever leaner. It doesn't take much to interrupt that fuel flow through tiny jets. Even the revered Honda's sometimes get to hunting. Fortunately with them you can change the jet... or open them up if you have the means. Ethanol has not been in any of my equipment for about 6 years. Not a single carb issue since I made that decision.
Good work sir.
:D
Nathan Rohrbough I just bought a Troy Bill model series 830. Has electric start and self propelled. I’m pretty excited. It starts up on the first pull which is the first time in my life that’s happened. So I assume the carb is in good condition. I bought it from an older gentleman and it’s been sitting a while.
Had same problem wash out air filter no more surging
Word!
My 300 series Briggs has no springs....
How d I idle it down a tad????
Good video, my mower (same plastic carb)....Brand new and after 4 months of use would not start, cleaned as in the video, still no start, bought a NEW carb and now it runs but "hunts".....any advice? Thanks
Thanks for sharing
Bob: any advice?
Nathan: thanks for sharing
At 1:20 he points out the engine is trying to find the right air and fuel mixture, then at 17:49 he puts the same filthy air filter he pulled off earlier right back on the intake. Smooth move.
Was testing the motor to see if it was going to run before wasting money on something that does not run. Always one step ahead! Got a new one now. Thanks for watching.
Nathan, I have a different model, same issue though, with a new carb, second actually, returned the first in the event it was defective. Any chance this could be caused by a worn governor spring or bent governor spring bracket?
I have this problem, took the carb off and cleaned out, put back on same issue. Bought a new carb, same issue. What now?
Do it again...lol
I knew it !The gizmo on the do hicky was dirty...
When you said i say yes i agree 😁😁😁
I have tried this multiple times. Finally replaced carb for $20 and guess what….still hunts and won’t run solid for longer than 10 mins. Any ideas?
Plug.
Gets it (the mower) fixed and it starts to rain. He gets his luck from the same store as me. Ha ha ha ha
I would like to find out how I can fix GMC lawn mower stop it from spluttering and the Idol
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ruclips.net/user/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
