Well stone me it worked Mick! I followed your instructions exactly. I was a bit dubious about drilling out the hole at first but the orange drill worked perfectly and just needed a little persuasion. So pleased all is well. I won't relate my catastrophe with the fuel and float but that's another story and nothing to do with your solution. Thanks again!! 😀😀😀😀😀😀

As always good advice. 👍 My Qualcast Suffolk Punch mower had the same hunting/rough idle problem and has the brass bowl bolt jet, but I identified a slightly different fix that may also be worth checking before reaching for the finger drill. Mine has the through hole near the head of the brass bowl bolt as shown in the video, however when I examined the nut with my magnifying glass I found another absolutely tiny hole right near the very end of the threads. It was blocked. I gave it a poke with my smallest gas jet cleaner file (which only just went in) and it cleared the blockage and completely cured the hunting problem. This extra hole was so small I could barely see it without magnification.

Tried your fix. Just using jet files to remove some material. Now perfect.

A lot of surging issues are caused by a lean fuel mix, keep in mind your fix, in effect, richened the mixture, there could be an air leak in the fuel/air mix downstream of the carb causing the lean mixture problem! Check the two tiny bolts on the intake tube are tight and there's no air getting past the associated gasket between that and the cylinder head and the "O" ring at the carb end, a quick spray whith carb cleaner while the engine is running will highlight any air leaks ie, the surge will stop or the revs will rise.

Hi Mike, can you please help. B&S 450E plastic carb engine on a 18 month old Hayter 41 Auto drive. Slow starting whatever I do 3 pumps 4 pumps on the red ( hole in the middle plunger).
It does start on pull 4 no black smoke and then runs fine starting every time when warm. Dealer has never come across this issue thinks its a dirty carb I don't see this as it runs great when warm. So first please explain (what does the red plunger do) because I don't see, or hear it squirting like the old side valve BS engine. Also what is the white plastic barb on the side of the carb for, looks like it should not be there. Regards Dave Porter

Hey Mick, just a quick question, the mower I’m working on (just a cheap Aldi thing) only surges for a couple of minutes when I start it from cold, then after that it settles down. I know the carb is all good and clean and no air leaks, good fuel etc etc (video will be uploaded later today).
Would you go a step up in the main jet with a tiny drill like this, or would you leave it? some people say drill the pilot for surging, some say drill main?! I’d presume main because it gets to WOT Ok, it’s when it’s there it’s a bit crappy. It just doesn’t look good when a customer comes to view it.
