Bet you the oils that went darker would have way lower film and friction tests after the best compared to the conventional. Mobile one is the worst name brand oil on the planet. Burns off 2x faster than any other oil in a performance engine.

I'm afraid this doesn't show us much. The only thing this might show is how quickly an oil darkens up when heat cycling, which is a non-issue. Various oils change color when heated but it has no effect on the oils ability to lubricate.

BACK IN 1981 WHILE IN COLLEGE. I WAS GIVEN A TUBE OF AMSOIL GREASE BY MY LAB PROFESSOR MR. SANFORD WHO SOLD AMSOIL PRODUCTS. I REMEMBER HIM SAYING AT CONVENTIONS. THEY PUT THIS AMSOIL PURPLE GREASE ON 100 WATT LIGHT BULBS AND IT WOULD NOT MELT OFF. WHEN I BOUGHT THIS FREE SAMPLE TUBE OF AMSOIL GREASE HOME AND PUT IT IN MY TOOL CLOSET IN MY HALLWAY. I NOTICED THERE WAS A TUBE OF CONVENTIONAL CASTROL GREASE WHICH WAS A BLUISH GREEN COLOR. SO I DECIDED TO DO MY OWN TEST AMSOIL VS CASTROL GREASE, WHERE I PUT AMSOIL ON ONE SIDE OF THE BULB AND CASTROL ON THE OTHER. AS I WENT OUT TO THE CAR AND CAME BACK AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES BOTH THE AMSOIL GREASE AND THE CASTROL GREASE WAS STILL ON THE BULB. AS I WAS WORKING ON MY CAR I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THE TEST. I WOULD SAY A HOUR WENT BY AND AS I WAS LOOKING FOR A TOOL ON THE FLOOR IN MY TOOL BOX. I THEN HEARD A PLOP OF THE GREASE FALLING FROM THE BULB ON TO THE TOP OF THE OTHER TOOL BOX NEXT TO ME. THE FIRST THOUGHT THAT CAME TO MY HEAD WAS THE CASTROL GREASE FELL OFF. TO MY SURPRISE IT WASN'T THE CASTROL, BUT THE AMSOIL THAT FELL OFF AND THE CASTROL WAS STILL ON THE SIDE OF THE BULB. I SAID TO MYSELF WHAT THE F**k IS THIS. THIS SO CALLED HIGH TECH SYNTHETIC GREASE COSTING 2-3 TIMES MORE THAN CASTROL CONVENTIONAL ALL PURPOSE GREASE WAS OUT-PERFORMED. SO I KEPT AND EYE TO SEE WHAT THE CASTROL GREASE DOES. IT JUST STAYED ON THE SIDE OF THE BULB AND AFTER HOURS FROM THE SIDE OF THE BULB. MADE ITS WAY TO THE BOTTOM BUT NEVER FELL OFF. WHAT SHOCKED ME LATER IS THAT THE TEST BULB WAS A 75 WATT, AND NOT THE 100 WATT MY PROFESSOR CLAIMED THEY DID THOSE TESTS WITH. WHEN MONDAY MORNING CAME AROUND I TOOK BOTH GREASES AND UNSCREWED THE BULB AND GOT ONE OF THOSE DIRECT PLUG IN SOCKETS. WHEN I GOT TO THE LAB CLASS I PLUGGED THE BULB INTO THE WALL OUTLET AND DID MY OWN TEST FOR EVERYBODY TO SEE. WHEN MY PROFFESSOR CAME IN, I TOLD HIM WHAT HAPPENED AND WAS DEMONSTRATING HOW CASTROL CONVENTIONAL GREASE BADLY OUT PERFORMED HIS AMSOIL GREASE. SO HE QUICKLY HAD ME REMOVE THE TEST AND HAD ME PUT EVERYTHING BACK IN THE BAG. THEN SAID THAT HE WOULD TAKE IT HOME AND PERFORM THE TEST THERE. AMSOIL WAS CREATED FOR THE SPACE PROGRAM WHERE THEY NEEDED A GREASE THAT WOULD NOT FREEZE AND SOLIDIFY IN GEAR BOXES OF THE SPACE CRAFTS, SATELITES, SPACE STATION, ETC. SYNTHETIC OILS ARE EXCELLENT FOR COLD CONDITIONS, BUT FOR EXTREME HEAT THEY DO NOT OUT PERFORM CONVENTIONAL OILS. FOR HEAT CONVENTIONAL OIL ARE MUCH BETTER AND AMSOIL, ROYAL PURPLE AND THE REST OF THESE HIGH PRICED SYTHETIC GIMMICKS ARE ALL A WASTE OF MONEY UNLESS YOU ARE IN SIBERIA.

No control on this either. You need a baseline to correctly judge the changes. A second and third rack of tubes would be required here. (untouched, frozen and frozen\heated) A uniform white background with exactly the same amount of oil in each tube as well. A digital scale would help with that.
I did see some change in the color. I wonder how it affects its ability to lubricate?

As everyone else has said, this shows nothing. Even sending these into a lab with their control to be analyzed for deterioration would only show which brands are better to handle the testing they went through. The only determining factor for the oil viscosity of your vehicle is what the manufacturer recommends for the vehicle. They spent all that time and money testing which oils work best in their engines for a reason.

For Mercedes Benz and Porsche that's true, but the rest just use whichever oil will get the best gas mileage without destroying the engine. Brand new cars are losing a quart in-between oil changes because the manual says to use 5W20, (for example) in an engine that really should run on 5W30.

The "experiment" has its logic, in an exaggerated and unusual way, try to explain how efficient is each oil in maintaining its viscosity. But the motor oil is more than that. A engine oil MUST to retain its characteristics beyond the hot metals friction, sparks, must have the ability to adhere to engine components, must to be cool enough and return to liquid in a reasonable time frame too. Thanks anyway for your time and help.

      Petecomplete
My previous Nissan Silvia with HKS tuning turbo(GTIII-RS SPORTS TURBINE KIT S15) was around 500 horse power. When it run as a drifting machine on circuit, the most important temperature that I payed attention to is the oil temperature, even more important than coolant temperature which is usually 10℃ lower than the oil temperature. However, I never let it go over 110 ℃(230°F).Actually, when the temperature exceeds 105, obvious power decrease would appear duo to the oil wear out. BTW 60 viscosity racing oil.
Like below one, an oil temperature gauge ends at 150℃, but I'm sure when you see it goes 120, what you need will just be a new engine.
      item.rakuten.co.jp/creer/df10401/
In addition, oil is cooling and lubricating only the core of the turbo, not the hot housing and propeller, and over one gallon of it is cycling in the engine and releasing the heat to the air. Like the coolant in the radiator, it cools the cylinders, but coolant never boils, even though the temperature of combustion can be very high.

full synthetic is not 100% synthetic, many full synthetic oils can be 20% synthetic or less.

I use conventional Castrol GTX 20/50 in my harley Harley oil is just oil . Synthetic oil is no better than oil if it is changed as recommended if they say 3000 miles do not go 4000 miles . if it is 7000 miles do not go 8000 miles . I have been telling people this 18 years . Air cooled engines are hard on oil they do not use all the detergents for air cooled .
