I imagine this is just rebranded brand X that Amazon is using. The problem is unless you test this regularly how would you know if Amazon switches to a cheaper supplier in the future.
It's a good point, but I think this is a problem for basically any product. Who knows if they changed things around to save a buck? Happens from everything from food to electronics, though they usually show some evidence ('new recipe, same great taste', or showing it as a slightly revised model in the case of electronics). I will say that it's more likely to be a problem with Amazon Basics and other companies that use the method of taking some other company's products and rebranding it.
@@ThatSoddingGamer because it's more expensive that way. Oil is mass produced by Warren and Valvoline and Mobile use it too. It's bought wholesale by a miltibillion$ co. I wouldn't worry about it.

that would have been interesting as well^^ but i have t oadmit that he really tests many aspects and try to get the best results without any chance of changing the results by influencing disturbance (different heatlevels on the plate and stuff like that^^)
How the oil performs at room temperature is interesting data, but you really need to know cold AND hot performance to make a distinction about a clear winner.
I concur, was thinking the same thing. Even if it was allowed to cool off first (for safety reasons) it would be interesting to see the bearing test repeated after the oils had been subjected to the heat.
Why no lubricity at high temp? -it’ll be nice to have but actually there is no need for wear/lubricity test at hot condition. Because most car engines’ wear and tear(~90%) is done at cold start, when lubrications has not been established. Once Lubrications is formed, wear on metal is negligible.. again, it is nice to have but not necessary.
Sounds good but no need to-most wear (~90%) is caused when engine starts. How soon lubrication builds up is more important than how well it lubricates-although both are important.
Oil temp can be much higher than water temp. Full synthetics are at their best in the 250*+ range when you're towing heavy or running hard compared to conventional.
A five quart jug of Supertech full synthetic is currently $14.88...kinda hard to beat for value. I've been using it for years. Love your channel. 10K more subscribers and you'll hit the million mark...that's impressive and well-deserved.
Add Shell Rotella T6 to that mix. It's a heavier duty oil than the others listed, but is still used by many people in normal gasoline engine vehicles. It has some of the best cleaning, and wear stats of any oil out there. Especially the 0w40 version. I personally use it in all of my vehicles and equipment as I can get it cheap through my work. Winters here tend to dip into the -40's, and a full synthetic 0W oil really helps. It made a huge difference in effort needed to pull over my snowblower, compared to the factory 10W30 oil.
I just started using Amazon synthetic oils for my small fleet of rental cars and this video puts my mind at ease. In the past I've always used Mobil1 so it looks like this will be a nice savings spread out over 6 cars. Thanks for the video!!
These videos are among my favorite on RUclips. Due to your videos I went back to changing my own oil. Store oil changes are cheap, quick, and clean but now I want to know what exactly I am putting in my vehicle. I would really like to see the major brands retested each year to keep them honest. As you have probably noticed, Amazon basic's 5W-20 has jumped up nearly 70% in the past two years and is now more expensive than most of the competition. I also have no idea if they have switched to cheaper additives in the process to increase their margins. I think part of the plan was to put out a stellar low price oil to get people to "subscribe and save" and then jack the price up later hoping consumers would not notice. It would be interesting to see if it is the same quality as it was back in early 2019.
I see you made an improvement to the lubricity tester with a splash guard. Always moving forward! Thank you for the time and effort for these videos. I have noticed that there seems to be a theme with the Amazon Basics items being a good value compared to the competition.
The Walmart (Supertech) oil is the same as the Amazon Basics. It's made by Warren (which you can see on the sticker in one of the shots), who make the "in house" brands for a lot of stores. Amazon Basics, Supertech at Walmart, Autoquest at Meijer, and I'm sure many others are the same oil, made by Warren. All are good options, and are very affordable.
@@ProjectFarm If you are going to test Mobile 1, you might as well add Mobile 1 top competitors like Amsoil and Royal Purple, no? I would like to see the coffee pot test with those, which I think you haven't done in the past... Also, when you do the lubricity testing measure the oil you put in the cup instead of just filling it by eye. An extra half ounce in one cup over another may actually affect the test by allowing more oil to be brought up on the wheel, thus pushing more oil over the bearing and giving a better reading vs a lower oil level in the cup... just a thought.
Project Farm! I have a request. The newest most hype on the internet right now is Valvoline Restore and Protect. They are amazed at how well it's cleaning the engines. I would like to see you test this oil and also see if it will clean from soaking parts in a container in this oil over time. Amsoil also claims that their High Mileage oil works the same way as the Valvoline Restore and Protect. Maybe you could do a comparison test against each other?
I'm pretty sure Amazon sells a lubricant for that too. Not sure if Mobil 1 or Valvoline have anything to compete with it, or if a comparison video would be necessary.
@@rustyshackelford6834 Maybe you ought to go see the reviews on this product before you open your fly trap. Most of Amazon's synthetic oil has very good reviews, almost five stars.

This was a very logical test of motor oil lubrication, flow, and volatility. It is now 3 years after this comparison test in which Amazon Basics synthetic oil won the competition. The question in my mind is whether Amazon's oil uses the same formulation as it was in this Feb 2019 test? Without yearly testing, there's no way to know if they've changed the formulation (to keep its cost advantage). 'Still, this was an interesting test. Thank you.

Warren Distributing is exactly that ... A distribution company. They handle products but don't make them. Example: Warren distributes Motorcraft parts. Motorcraft is the parts division of Ford. Warren doesn't make the parts. Ford does. Ford doesn't directly distribute parts (other than to dealerships). Warren does.
•_ - they get the oil from a company called Warren. It's on the bottle it self. Most companies do this(buy from other companies) because there are only a handful of companies that actually have the resources to pump oil out the earth. So smaller companies buy from giant oil companies and rebrand them. Just like our mattresses, they all come from a handful of manufactures, but companies buy them and rebrand them.
@@Shehan.H96 I'm not saying amazon doesn't rebrand but you're talking about amazon/mobile1 full synthetic. I'm no Einstein but i'm pretty sure that means it's made in a lab.

@@sleeksilver Sounds like someone who owns a vehicle that Scotty Kilmer doesn't like. He talked about the manufacturer of the oil and is well known. As Josh said, he came to the same conclusion that this would be a better brand.
Nice comparison. The only thing I'd worry about is where the oil comes from. Amazon probably has contracts that oil manufacturers can bid on. Could be great oil when company X is supplying it, but when the contract is up, will company Y continue with the same quality, for better or worse? Also, when the oil is manufactured by a vendor, Amazon does not have direct control over the quality process. Some companies might take advantage of this freedom and pass an out-of-spec batch to make their quota. I'd be interested to see a follow-up video in the future to measure the manufacturing consistency! :)

Agreed. I never understand the desire to save $5-20 per oil change on cheaper oil. that would have been interesting as well^^ but i have t oadmit that he really tests many aspects and try to get the best results without any chance of changing the results by influencing disturbance (different heatlevels on the plate and stuff like that^^)
How the oil performs at room temperature is interesting data, but you really need to know cold AND hot performance to make a distinction about a clear winner.
I concur, was thinking the same thing. Even if it was allowed to cool off first (for safety reasons) it would be interesting to see the bearing test repeated after the oils had been subjected to the heat.
A cold bearing test would be interesting as well.
A more real test would be to heat the oil to 212 degrees and do the bearing test.
That's a good idea man.
Doing a test without temp on oil is useless! Flow test or not! Oils perform under temp as you said at the start of tour vid

Thanks! Great suggestion. Thank you.

Also, when you do the lubricity testing measure the oil you put in the cup instead of just filling it by eye. The question is: Who Amazon is rebranding oil from?
I was thinking the same thing 🤔
Warren is the company that makes it
•_ - they get the oil from a company called Warren.

Thank you
If you cared about this, you wouldn't be buying that. I will always buy Mobil 1, especially if it doesn't really cost much more, if any, at Walmart.
Great point
@Joe Casson You should never have purchased Fram in the first place. Absolutely the worst.
@@thingsdemystified - Same. My mechanic tells me to get Mobil1 and that's what I get when I change my oil in all my vehicles (even motorcycle).
Gotta comment to support the channel on principle. Great work as always.
Much appreciated!
