      Cold lube test… For context,,, I live in northern Canada where tires freeze flat, 10Ply with 80Lbs are not effected until -60 freezing flat causing vehicle to hobble, n 10Ply at 50Lbs freeze flat at 0 hobbling for about 4-8 kilometres until they warm, 6Ply tires at full pressure -60 will freeze flat side down requiring driving slow until tires warm n the car stops hobbling before we can increase speed, or suffer a tire blowout for failing to drive slow until tires warm… So, point is. re:-break components as an example… break slides often require high temp grease, good to about 500c heat, never cease is good too about 3,000c heat,,, Q 🙋‍♂️ is - Seems lube manufacturers don’t provide cold flow, or cold working temperatures for lubricants like high temp grease, or never cease…
      Sorry i am not sure what other different types of lubricants you might test…

This model it was easy to crush the filter if you were not intelligent enough to spread the airbox apart and simply slid it in (you'd feel it crush). The filter had a 3" gap and it must have been like that for 50k or more miles judging by the dirt on it.

      They'll eventually disappoint you. I stopped using them about 10 years ago after they lost a sample and sent me the wrong UOA on another. Nobody who takes oil formulating seriously uses Blackstone. They charge extra for TBN, they don't even use gas chromatography for fuel dilution (they guess at it) where as every other lab actually measures it, and they're more expensive than other labs even without the extra for TBN... and the other labs include TBN.

    Very good about shaking the bottle of oil before pouring off a sample. Additives do settle at the bottom of the bottle. I learned that years back when I happened to look into an empty bottle of Castrol (white bottle) and saw specs of what I realized were additives. Always shake the bottle right before pouring the oil into your engine!

    • @jakeme2563
      @jakeme2563 2 года назад

      I'd love to see that! There are some filter tests out there, but almost all of them are just visual inspections of the filter construction/media. The few I found that measure the ability to filter out particulates are unfortunately pretty old and don't cover a lot of the newer filters designed for extended drain intervals like the Wix xp. I'm really interested since a lot of newer vehicles have a recommended oil change interval of 10k miles.

    • @colinreed62
      @colinreed62 2 года назад

      To do this properly, it could be extremely expensive, but would be awesome. Particle counters up stream and down stream ($16k each) and measure differential pressure (could be anywhere from $100 to $100k depending on the DAQ used) would likely be necessary to test properly. The main things manufacturers are concerned with when making filters are particle filtration efficiency and particle capacity. I've looked up specs for filters before and haven't had much luck, so I would love if Todd would do some testing.

They will never dry out, crack or split. 40 years and no leaks! Take note that they will need replaced if components are disassembled because they will be too large to use again. It is also excellent for cleaning, freeing and quietening sticky lifters. After MANY years of real-world testing, I now do NOT recommend using MMO every oil change because I think it does not have good lubricating properties.

    When I performed my first oil change, I went with ultra platinum and I was chastised by my brother for not going with the cheapest penzoil option. I told him I want to take the best care of my car and he said there's almost no difference.
    I'm glad I watched this video, it proves that I was right in picking the ultra platinum for my car, im going to keep using ultra platinum in my car until I eventually go electric!

      @@droy7101 they are recommended for use after 100k miles (160k kms). I'm really not sure what the differences are but i'd assume it somehow accommodates for general wear of an engine (perhaps more thick?), many people have said it also helps to seal up minor oil leaks. I'd say just keep doing whatever you're doing. I have 175k miles on my car and just switched to high mileage for the first time. So glad you did this test. I’ve been using pennzoil platinum for my daily and ultra platinum for my gf’s daily after watching the oil bracket showdown. I was using platinum because it’s difficult to find in physical stores for me. Plus my vehicles uses 0w-20, whereas her vehicle is a more common 5w-30 so I can buy bulk online. I will have to buy more ultra platinum and stay away from platinum. Only the best, thank you for your hard work

Look, if you get the warm fuzzy feelies just before nodding off to bed thinking that you installed the best oil possible for your vehicle, then that's great. ANY modern SP, SN, SM and even SL API cert oils changed as per manufacturer's recommendations, and equally important actually keeping the oil topped up, will keep a great majority of vehicles happily running for many years.

    I admit this is a bit of a late post for this, but there's some interesting context I can provide. My father was a chemist for Quaker State's Research Center; he did a lot of the testing on their original 4x4 blend. Almost all motor oil sold in the US is a synthetic blend or full synthetic. If I remember correctly, it's largely because getting non-synthetic oil to meet modern standards is extremely difficult and expensive. Synthetic is still largely based on crude oil (it doesn't have to be, but often is) - it just means that the hydrocarbons, instead of being simply separated into types, are physically and chemically modified into a more 'ideal' form. Typically, this means cleaving off impurities and chains with less-than-ideal properties, then reassembling the chains based on the formulation you're aiming for. API doesn't even really track conventional vs synthetic anymore - it's only really a marketing term these days.

    As someone who uses Pennzoil products myself, this was very helpful! I especially found the difference in "cooked" vs "uncooked" platinum cold-flow performance fascinating. Here's an idea for future oil reviews: we've seen how all the big names like Pennzoil, Amsoil, and others stack up, but what about *dealership* oils? While some automakers partner with brands that have already been tested, some have suppliers that are not brands you can buy from local stores (Subaru for example uses a brand called Idemitsu). In summary, which dealership brand has the best oil, and if you still take your car or truck to the dealership for service, should you be bringing your own oil? I know I always prefer to bring my own oil and filter, but I know plenty of people who don't think it's worth it. Interested in your thoughts, and I look forward to more great videos! Keep it up!

Pennzoil has made a HUGE difference on my engine which previously was Motorcraft. No more knocking, much quieter and smoother shifts in the transmission. Not to mention, 3.5 more miles per gallon at 19.2. Pennzoil is the best choice imo for my truck.
