- Both Mobil 1 and Schaeffer's have been in business for over 100 years, but which brand makes the best SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil? Let's find out! I purchased Mobil 1 and Schaeffer's Synthetic oils using my own money. I am not sponsored by Schaeffer's or Mobil 1 or by any product manufacturer. 100% of Project Farm videos are ideas that come from those leaving comments. So, thank you very much for requesting this video! In the previous episodes, Amsoil won over Royal Purple, Amazon won over Liqui Moli, and Red Line won over Super Tech. The brands that won will advance to next round in the oil championship series.

Need to do Lubrication Engineers monolec tetra syn 5w30 . The ultimate synthetic oil
You didn’t put enough oil in cup on bearing test for Schaffer’s oil not fair!!
Excellent content as always Project Farm. May I suggest longer volatility tests for your oil comparisons? If you're going to "freeze" the oils for 24hrs for cold flow tests, why not "cook" the oils for 24hrs for volatility tests?
Keep up the great work PF. Thank you.

One thing is interesting: shaeffir in business 150 years and I never heard of it until 2019. Haha. They may need better advertising.

Products and businesses that advertise by word of mouth tend to be of better quality.

@@PhantomPanic Zing!! Good one.
@Nicolas Broszky I have been married for 22 years. Checkmate.
I switched to Schaeffer's products for everything with my hotshot business. It lowered my maintenance intervals by over 25% Which lowered my downtime and by buying their products in bulk from a distributor it came out to be cheaper than any other option. I even get free oil samples which is a huge savings. My biggest savings come with their carbon treat fuel treatment pushing that fuel filter life out is huge. The Wheel hub 219 grease lowered my trailer hub temps by 8-12 degrees over lucus red n tacky.

I hadnt either. It is impressive.
Great product! I've never used it prior to this test. Lots of requests to test it and I can see why.
Green Oil??????
I had never heard of it either. Weird, especially since it's been around so long. But it is pretty expensive stuff and I don't think a lot of places sell it, so that's probably why.
I believe they dye their full synthetic green. I think their conventional oils are the more traditional color.

If I was a gambler I will start placing bets with my friends on these races. Lol 🤣
Holy crap this channel is amazing. The fleet that we had years ago all transferred to Schaeffers oil after we ran a series of test between 100 vehicles. I think it was about ten vehicles each received a certain brand of full synthetic oil with oil samples sent off every single oil change. At the end of the year Schaeffers oil was decided on and we extended our 5000 mile oil changes in F150s to 13,000 miles per oil sample recommendations. The trucks were already out of warranty as standard oil changes were no longer relevant. A few of the trucks that we used for highway parts running were extended up to 17,000 miles. Amsoil was up there but they cannot beat the bulk prices on Schaefer.
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
Amsoil is just better:)

I've got same thing in my honda, and I'm not planning on ever adding new oil. In fact, I save changed engine oils from my other vehicles and let it burn off in my Honda.
I never would have thought of this, except my dad did same and told me. in 80's some time, he started up a home construction company, bought a heavily used truck. It turned out to burn oil pretty bad. He never even changed filter ... and got 100K+ miles without ever changing the oil. Not sure what ever happened to that truck, I'm assuming he sold it.

@@mikecekic2393 not when you're changing your oil 1/4 as often and you're never tearing down an engine for engine wear failure. If you're running conventional oil you are spending four to six times more money on oil then I am in the same number of miles plus the cost of the oil change even if it's your own time and an oil filter.most of my engines run an entire year on 1 oil change 1 filter. The rest of them are changed per what the oil lab analysis tells us the change interval should be most are around the equivalent of 24000 miles on stationary other dirtier condition engines are around 12000 miles. Recommendations on the bottles are 7000 and 9000 miles but we send everything into a private analysis lab to be sure we are getting the best protection possible. I can almost guarantee you that if you sent me a sample of your conventional oil that had 3000 miles on it and I sent it into the lab the results would come back that you should have changed your oil a thousand miles ago.

Our family has used Mobil 1 synthetic for well over 30 years. Never once have we had any kind of internal engine problem. It’s proven itself for us year after year and vehicle after vehicle. Walmart always has the best price too, at around $25 for the 5 quart jug. It might have lost the comparison, but experience trumps a single test in my book. Grew up in the Midwest and we’d use 5W30 during the winter and 10W30 in the summer. That probably helped us out too. That’s just my experience, as I’m 35 and helped my dad with oil changes since I was 5. That’s what he taught me and he’s unfortunately passed, but his knowledge is still serving me well. God bless!
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! It's a great oil!
I saw a test of Mobile 1 against Amsoil back in 1980 or -81, and Mobile 1 lost on the lubricity tester to Amsoil.
@@sunshinekid6922 In my mind I see amsoil being the overall winner of the oil showdown. My family has used amsoil exclusively on our race cars. That being said, is the performance worth the extra cost of it? I don't know. Great tests
@@sunshinekid6922 After bacon fat decisively beat conventional oil in the lubricity test, I've lost faith in it.
Many years ago I recall a sleazy oil additive company using the same test to promote their product. It was just a zinc additive. If you didn't know better, the test made the additive look very appealing. In actual use, the additive didn't help, and in many situations cause problems, but it tested well ;)
@@EDesigns_FL You are probably referring to zddp. In older cars with agressive cams it is actually very helpful. It is an additive specifically for high pressure lubrication. Newer oils have used lower amounts due to a change in catalytic converter materials. Manufacturers had to do so because of new regulations regarding catalytic converter warranties being extended. The new material did not like zddp. The additive for manual transmission oils have gotten varying results because of synchro materials also. I forget the additive, but when used on bronze vs steel (I think) it does an excellent job preventing wear on one but causes rapid wear on the other. That said, some additives are hogwash, others it really does depend on the application.
Your voiceovers are getting better and better! Great sound. Keep up the amazing videos!

This is more exciting than the NBA.. my only complaint is it is too long between tests! I think it would be interesting at the very end of the bracket to test the overall winner against the last place and see what the differences are by percentage and price (cost/ benefits ratio). Additionally, a test against a very low cost "economy" brand as this would probably show the value of extra protection against wear. Thank you as always for your delivery and demeanor. It is great to see a family friendly channel that is intellectual and without drama.

Schaeffer's 90w oil is amazing stuff. We used it at a shop I worked at. It's the stickiest, slickest stuff I have ever seen. Dip your finger in it and the breeze would make it string across the parking lot. We also put it through the friction test and it performed excellent. It even beat out pumpers lube. Lol.

I have used depth bypass filters for the last 50 some years. My oil always looks new. Looks like the Mobil 1 is lighter. Before I started using synthetics I used Chevron Delo 100 30 wt. I don't drain oil. In the 60s multi grade conventional oil didn't hold up for extended use. You for sure didn't use multi grade in a diesel. My uncle told me his 59 Ford always uses a quart of oil after he changes it. Then it's OK until his next oil change. Later I realized one quart evaporated. Conventional multi grade. They are a lot better now. When Mobil 1 first came out all they had was 5 20. You needed a pretty good engine to use it.

At 100K, I put new plugs in it and checked valve clearance. Looked like new under the cover. Some light brown stains. No crud. Valves were within .001 of being to spec. No wear on cam chain tensioners and cam chain timing was dead on. Car still runs like new. So Mobile 1 will do it's job. Gave the car to a granddaughter. Now testing Mobile 1 in a Subie Crosstrack. I love you’re channel! I wanted to suggest that while you are doing the oil shootout, you are only doing the bearing test with brand new oil. I realize you only needed a quart of Schaeffer Oil to test . That’s why it cost you so much. Schaeffer strategy has been to market primarily to heavy equipment fleets, mining companies, and large agricultural operations. They usually are selling their products by the 55 gallon drums with a 5 gallon bucket being considered a small amount. Most folks don’t realize how much packaging & mainstream ad campaigns add to the cost of products.
I’ve run their products in my agricultural equipment for about 15 years and through oil analysis I’ve concluded that their oils, hydro fluids, and greases are the best on the planet. They are also significantly less expensive when you’re buying larger quantities. Schaeffer’s commercial customers are fiercely loyal because not only are their products top-shelf but the people in the company are as well. wrencher here, never ever knew there was a oil wit the sir name. pretty interesting. thanks for sharing these specs. hope you guys are doing well with your engines and oils of choice. God bless ✌️
Thanks!
Thanks for your videos, I´m from Mexico and you really helped to choose an oil brand for my truck.
Thank you
This guy's impartiality is impressive! The videos get my thumbs up!
Thank you very much!
Us racecar guys would love to see a test like this with Valvoline VR1, Brad Penn, or other high zinc and ZDDP oils
The Auto Answer Man , Schaeffer’s also makes many Racing formulas with extra zinc .. the micron moly is going to be hard to beat!
Thank you for the video idea!
@@swlalubricants456 Their racing oils are badass! 🏁🇺🇲🏁🇺🇲🏁🇺🇲🏁
Really amazing channel my friend you deserve support
Thanks!
Schaeffer's ... one of the best kept secrets among serious gear heads!
10 years ago my auto teacher in high school had a bearing tester and we tested all kinds of oils. At the end he brings out this green oil in a windshield washer jug and it blew everything away. Then he told us it was Schaeffer and I was sold! 👍🏁🇺🇲🏁🇺🇲🇺🇲
Charles, Impressive!
Test Amsoil Signature Series sometime.
Always enjoy your videos! Glad to see your testing motor oils now. Is Pennzoil Platinum on your list?
I don't think Pennzoil Platinum should be on the list. I think that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum should be on the list. Researching shows that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is second best to Amsoil. This would be the show down in the finale according to many sites.
Thank you. Yes, I'll test it soon. Thank you
I Run Schaeffers in everything from my GTO to my old ram and even my new one. I especially recommend them for any diesel application too 👍🏼
Thank you
ive never seen a bottle of it.
Glad I found these series of videos. I only use Schaefer's and Redline in my hotrods. From 400 to 1000hp they have performed flawlessly. Schaefer's is a great little family owned business. They put their money into development and not marketing hence why many people haven't heard of them. However, they are well know in the industrial market
Thanks for the feedback!
My uncle and cousin sell it it’s all my family uses probably some of the best stuff on the market when it comes to grease oil atf they also have a cleaner called citrol it cuts grease and oil like butter plus it is a citrus based
Rotating those things every 5 minutes for 2 hours sounds like a fun job.
lol. Yes, it is indeed challenges my attention span to stay on top of that 5-minute mark!
@@ProjectFarm automate it
I’m surprised he hasn’t built a rig to automate the process.
@@ikbendusan Good idea. A simple machine with 2 rotating arms could move the containers either using and arduino to keep time or even just rotates constantly at 0.2-1 RPM.
Great job and very interesting. I would like to see another "lubricity" test after the oils are cooked. Seems like that would be more informative than pre cook. Thanks!
PF, since it's likely that the finalists in this testing are going to be both darn good products...is it possible to come up with some other test to determine a winner? Like say a multi hour test in a small engine where we can get a look at their sludge (detergent pkg) fighting capabilities? While lubrication is important, having an oil in your car that fights the formation of sludge and deposits to a minimum, keeping those oil passages free flowing is also an important function of a high quality oil.
Outstanding recommendation! Yes, I don't want to spoil it, but I do have a very challenging set of tests for the final 2 products. I can hardly wait!
@@ProjectFarm who needs March madness when you have PF oil showdown! 👍😉
@@ProjectFarm Glad to hear there will be additional testing!
Schaeffers is located here in St Louis, MO and no one has ever heard of it. They are a small family business and they don't sell big stores. I ran the US National motorcycle endurance for many years. Once at a 6 hour in Las Vegas we blew a gasket and water leaked for about the last hour of the race. That's about 14k RPM for an hour. The motor did not blow up even though the radiator was empty. After the motor tear down, the oil was toast but the bearings were still good. We felt most oils would not have tolerated that abuse. Great stuff!
Impressive results! Great product for sure. Thank you
Dude. I love your videos. AAA+ quality. Love it. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you very much!
Magnetic bit holder test, bit durability, oscillating blade durability, safety gear test (glasses, ear plugs/muffs, respirators), and uhhhhh work table load capacities
Thank you for the video idea!
MUFFINS!!! MUFFINS!!! You’d make a great wife
I really like the safety gear testing idea!
DE Nichols when there are already national standards and labs doing certification, I wouldn’t want the legal woes that would come with redoing their work
wow being using scheaffer's for 2 years on my wrx and final;y i can stop doubting my choice!
Clear and authentic... One suggestion bro.. The viscosity check should also be done after let's say 5000 miles if possible to be more precise... 🙏
Thanks for the suggestion.
Schaefer invented motor oil before the invention of the internal combustion engine, and then had to wait until it was
OK now THAT'S funny!!! LOL
Those oxen went through a lot of motor oil pulling those wagons!!!
very funny, but just as an FYI schaffer started out making grease, if im not mistaken they called it "black beauty grease" their grease is excellent to this day
Good to know. I need a waterproof grease for my boat prop and so far not very satisfied with lubriplate 130 AA or Chevron Black Pearl, as they both tend to wash out too easily
@@wallacegrommet9343 i highly recommend the 238 schaffer grease, that stuff is great when it comes to washing out and pounding out under pressure
Another great video! I love how there are several oils on the market that seem to throw punches with the top commercially available brands. When you're done with the oil competition, I'd love to see a real diesel fuel additive video. So many of the products advertise improved efficiency and cold start performance. Do any of them work? Maybe you could do a small scale test next winter?
Great video idea! Thank you
I have a really good idea test the cooked oil on the libribisty tester fresh off the grill nice and hot test results
Great recommendation! Thank you!
What I get out of this really is, whether you chose Shaeffers or mobile One, your not going to have any problems either way. They both prove basically do a great job no matter which one you chose. I never heard of Schaeffers and I have to say, it does an amazing job. I have done a lot of research between different synthetic oils and learned a lot. I ended up choosing Mobile One and been pretty happy with it. I think I'd be just as happy with Schaeffer as well. I am extremely impressed going from regular oil to full synthetic and will never go back to regular.
Thank you for putting out this video. I wish Mobil One pulled another victory but knowing both are pretty much the same except on price. I cannot complain!
Thank you.
Oh? Pretty noice
How about...: windshield washer fluid
Thank you for the video idea!
Coming up with a "standard windshield" might be fun. Potato(e) salad near the intake of a leaf blower might provide enough flies to wash. Radiator fluid and used oil mix (blown HG from the hoopdie in front of you) does a good job of smearing them up too. Simulate old windshields with a bead blaster? OOH, pine sap...
Stay away from the orange rain x fluid. It leaves a film and after 2 years your low fluid light will come on. The film will. Block the sensor fome making contact.
I use pure deionised water for washer fluid
?

@@spencerphilippinedream3706 You probably right, I got excited.😔
Could you do auto store brand oil next?
Like Autozone and O'Reilly
I just typed a similar comment.
You beat me by four hours. :)
Thank you for the video idea!
Autozone's oil brand, STP, is API SN Plus.
Don't forget Amazon basic lol
@@jonathoncliffbailey , did STP acquire Autozone, or vice-versa? Because from what I know, STP originated in the mid 1950's, whereas Auto Shack (which eventually became Auto Zone) opened it's first store in 1979.
I have watched almost all of your videos over the past several years and really enjoy your engine oil ones. I own my own trucking company and would like to a make a suggestion for you to test Ford Diesel Oil, Shell Rotella Diesel Oil, Schaeffer Diesel Oil, and Lucas Diesel Oil both synthetic and regular. I started running Lucas over Schaffer’s due to cost and want to make sure I’m not ruining my engines. In my experience with Rotella, my engines have always burned oil and with other brands I do not. I want to make sure the oil I’m using is safe for my engine. I trust and respect your results that you come up with in your videos and would appreciated an unbiased answer from someone I trust.
Thanks for the video idea.
I in joy watching your videos and I put confidence in them
Thank you
My old VW Beetle 1.9 PD Diesel had the longlife service plan and the engine oil was changed every 2 years by the VW dealer - roughly 20k miles! VW have an explanation of this on a .pdf called "Longlife III - Volkswagen UK"
Wow! That sure does seem like a long time.
Just for info from the .pdf.
'LongLife Service regimes
The LongLife Service regime is so called because there are no set service intervals and, depending on how you drive your vehicle, and the conditions of use, a service will be required anywhere between 9,000 miles or 12 months (whichever occurs first), up to a maximum of 20,000* miles or 24 months (whichever occurs first).
This LongLife service regime has been made possible due to the development of new Volkswagen engines with the latest technically advanced LongLife oil. These engines use built-in sensors that continually monitor the oil quality, making it possible to enjoy reliable and confident motoring for up to a maximum of 20,000* miles or 24 months (whichever occurs first).'
