      Depends on your output. I prefer to use the same settings (log) and convert to rec709 outside of my cam, either in the external monitor or in an ATEM as an example. If you don't have an external monitor that can convert or if you go from camera to stream, then you will need to film in Rec709. Hope that answers your question?

    • @persvanstrom

      Base ISO is only appliciable for CLOG#, so short answer is none. Use what you like and what the situation requires. Which on the other hand also works for LOG. I often shoot 400 in CLOG3 and have even used 200 sometimes.

    Also on file sizes I've experimented with pro-res LT and 422 and cant tell much difference to HQ Which really cuts down on the storage space. Have you played around and noticed any loss in quality ?

    • @persvanstrom
      @persvanstrom  2 года назад +1

      Thank you very much Justin. I had to run to the studio to test this so sorry for a late response. I couldn't reproduce your error. I tried both starting recording from my camera as well as the Ninja to see if that made any difference but it didn't. When I opened them in Resolve they all said the correct FPS. As I'm Swedish I didn't try 24, but 25 and 50. I got my Camera Output (under Input) set to Log/HDR on. Not sure that would help. If you can't sort it, look me up on Facebook or email me and I can drop a screenshot of all my Ninja and R6 settings if you like.
      As to your question about LT vs HQ, not much of a difference I agree, but my Drone shoots HQ 444 Prores and my C70 in Long Gop just feels more as a match. TBH, since I got the C70 as an A-cam I only use Ninja when I do client work and then space isn't much of an issue. For personal use I would stay LT :)

      Do you mean auto footage as in Rec.709 or no log footage? That shouldn't be so hard as any LOG footage needs to be converted to Rec.709 before you use it anyway, so in fact, log needs to be "auto/normal". Depending on your NLE (editing software) the processes is a little different, but either a conversion LUT or color transformation. Did that explain your question?

    • @sjcproductionsandmedia
      @sjcproductionsandmedia 4 месяца назад

      It did. I do use CLOG3 99% of the time and used conversion LUTs but the low light is killing me. The people looked like they were recorded on a 2010 android device

I'm now using a monitor (not recorder) and I'm able to better see the exposure - I think I had my zebras set incorrectly - but I also thing Clog is better for weddings, since the lighting situations change so much. It doesn’t have to, but the base ISO (standard) for CLOG3 is 800. So it’s what CLOG is calibrated for. It gives most dynamic range and least amount of noise. I sometimes use 400, but 95% of the times I use 800

    Thank you for making this video.
    FYI, I called Canon and asked specifically about the base ISO when shooting in Log. The Canon technical rep said that there is no base ISO for an R5 or R6. He knows that it exists in other cinematic cameras, but not those.
    I continue to be confused on this topic.

    • @persvanstrom
      @persvanstrom  2 года назад +2

      Thank you Doug for watching and your comment. I will try to sort this. Base ISO for LOG exists. So for CLOG3 that is 800 and for CLOG(1) that is 400, CLOG2 is also 800. It's just the base. I often shoot ISO400 on CLOG3 when I got enough light as it do give a little less noise. So if you are using CLOG3 in an R6/R5 then the base ISO is in fact 800, but if you are shooting in standard Rec709 or taking photos, then there is no base ISO. Does that clear it up or make it even more confusing? :)

    • @dougdina
      @dougdina 2 года назад +1

      @@persvanstrom Thank you for responding and I totally understand what you are saying. However, that is not what the rep at Canon said. They said that the ISO can be whatever you want. I will call them back and ask them again. You were quite clear and , in fact, many videos on RUclips mention the same thing that you did. But, I was curious and wanted more information, so I called them. So, this is why I’m confused.

    • @persvanstrom
      @persvanstrom  2 года назад +1

      Base ISO isn't a requirement, it's just where it starts. So if we instead replace "Base ISO" with "recommended ISO starting point" it might become more clear? It's not like the camera will break or not work if you choose another ISO, but what it means is that the ISO of a certain LOG, the base ISO, is what will produce, at most circumstances, the cleanest image. A 800 ISO CLOG will be a lot more noisy than a 800 ISO CLOG3 at the exact same settings otherwise as they have different Base ISO's. Thats it! Nothing magic and nothing we, as creators can't break. Your rep is also wrong, cause the LOG has a Base ISO, it's just how the LOG profile works and CLOG is just Canons version of LOG and 3 is just the version of the LOG. Maybe he/she is confusing Base ISO and Native ISO?

      Thanks man, I appreciate you time. This base-iso-800 thing scared me a lot. I don't do professional works for now (only casual and lazy vlogs), but I still like to keep the balance between the quality of the footage, and the easiness and speed of using the equipments while enjoying my travel. I just needed to hear someone else's opinion that going under base iso is not the end of the world.

    • @persvanstrom
      @persvanstrom  Год назад

      I think a lot of people (me included) when they get started read base, recommendations etc as have-tos. There is only one have-to when making videos for your self, are you happy with them? :) I often break base ISO and somtimes you can even do the opposite and go above 800 of the circumstances require it.

    • @JanasViLoegg
      @JanasViLoegg Год назад +1

      The reason why it is not recommended to go below base ISO is, that it will significantly reduce your dynamic range and crush the details in your shadows. Also it won‘t help with actually clipped highlights, they will still be clipped. That’s because every change from base ISO is basically post-processing exposure editing. It doesn’t influence the amount of light, it just moves a slider, so it can‘t add details in the highlights that aren’t there to begin with. In my experience (with the C300) you often get a better result with adding an ND Filter and going slightly over base ISO, than with removing an ND Filter and going below it. Different cameras with different sensors might behave different tho, and different people might have different preferences and limits for what they still find acceptable. So it’s worth taking your camera, doing some test pictures and working out the ISO range where you feel comfortable with the results.

    • @persvanstrom

      Oh, congratulations! I can recommend to set your project to 4K but your timeline to 1920. That way you can work faster when edit. Just switch timeline back to 4K before exporting and you got 4K output.
      As ot switching. between Photo and Video really depends on your situation. Let's say you do event photography and want to also capture some video quickly. Then I would ensure I got the right video settings while in photo mode and just hit record (the red button) when you need video. If you want more deliberate video capture while needing to photograph, it's still better to swtich to video mode as you get more control over your video quality. Then I would prob use C1-C3 for photo settings and just keep turning that dial between photo and video.
      I should have videos for both Custom Shooting modes (C1-C3) and best video settings.

    what would the shutter be for f8?

      Shutterspeed for Video doesn't work as with photo. It should be set to double your frame rate. For 24/25fps you should have 1/50th. For 60fps - 1/120th. 120fps - 1/240th of a second and so one. Or 180deg shutter angle as it's called on cinema cameras. That means that first you decide your frame rate. Then you set your shutter speed accordingly. Lastly you set your apurture to what look you want. Then you will have to either add light (external video light or sun) or block light (ND filter) to get proper exposure.

      @Street Clips I almost never change ISO from 800 (base ISO for CLOG3)

      @@persvanstrom No problem, great video btw. I wasn’t fully aware of the CinemaGammut issue, since I always used BT709.

      @@ElBoyoElectronico Atomos has answered and confirmed, but no fix yet. Thank you for your nice comment as well. I'm still trying to figure out which level I should place my videos at. More or less advanced :) Any input or future requests are most welcome

      @@persvanstrom Yeah, it is hard to hit the right level. When I watched your video, I actually thought about that too, since the beginning was (for my personal knowledge-level) rather basic, but the end of the video was rather advanced and very helpful to me. Maybe less topics in one video and therefore more information on the subject might be a good idea (e.g. a separate video on colorgrading), but I think you are on a good path. I like your delivery and as a R6 shooter am always happy to hear more about it.

      Thank you very much for this input. I'm super grateful. I just got my C70 as well, so will do more video content and also more about using R6 as a B-cam for commercial use :) Also, any specific topic you want me to make a video about, just let me know.
