Paul, your videos are what inspired me to buy a set of camping gear. Planning a wild camping trip into the lake district for the first time ever, in April. 22 years old and first time giving it a go
Back to the old long form videos with 41 glorious minutes... Can't wait! For what it's worth your Rannerdale Knotts camp has got to be my all time favourite and the one that really got me into wild camping.
When I pitch I high winds I generally chuck my rucksack inside the inner to keep it one the ground. This video is a good example of what a 4 season tent is for. Despite not having the extra poles it still sat there without issue. Another great video @Paul Messner
I like the longer format, it's more escapism and slower pace which is relaxing. No ads? You seem to be exposing for the sky, which I think works really well.
I love these videos they are brilliant. The way you filmed this I felt as if I was there also. The longer style of video and more in tent discussion really works. Thanks J
You can learn the easy way, or the hard way. I learnt the hard way. It's all very well to urge caution, but cooking that close to your flysheet can end badly, as it did for me in Knoydart some years back. It's astonishing how quickly a canister-top stove can transform itself into a gas-powered blowtorch that consumes your tent in seconds. That gizmo for your pot is called a trivet, by the way.
Loved the longer video with more on pitching camp, gear, weather, etc. and before I started it I went and made a coffee with a bit of Baileys in it. The view was absolutely stunning. I like how you showed us the modifications you made to your gear. Looking forward to your next trip.
Loved the longer format Paul. Would love to see perhaps a two nighter. Also loved the idea of gear hacks. An idea you mentioned about the powdered egg, would you consider a series where you prepare and cook your meals at home then dehydrate them yourself and then review them when you're on a wild camp? Keep up the good work you're smashing it! Can't wait to possibly bump into one day up the peaks haha
Great Video Paul . If you pop a t-shirt around the top of the sleeping pad then you can you can put the pillow inside and it will stop it moving around.
Great video as usual. Loved the time lapse, and your video colors are so vibrant. Those were some really strong winds, I admire your enthusiasm. I will be going on my second wild camp this weekend thanks to you and a couple others' encouragement.
@@PaulMessner I camp at a 2000 acre nature preserve 10 minutes from my house where I am a volunteer. The good news is that it isn't open to overnight camping, so I have it all to myself, but the bad news is that I don't have the amazing views that you have, lol. You and Jo are welcome to join me, but...I live in Texas. :)
Back in the early 1990's for 3 years I used to camp most weekends and every holiday on the Long Mynd in all weathers to save the money the gliding club bunk house would have cost helping to pay my flying fees. I should have offered to test equipment because I was camping at least 100 nights a year and tents rarely lasted more than a year up on those hills. Your video brings back many happy memories of time spent in a tent on the gem that is the Long Mynd.
Definitely love the longer format. You get a real essence of what it could be like out there yourself! Love the work, thanks so much! I'm an expat in Tokyo and these videos give me a great taste of home :-)
im a very simple things in life type person,im at my most happiest far away from crowds, and towns, you can't beat being in the countryside and places of scenic beauty;nature and wildlife are the best!😊
Yeah definitely the longer ones...gives us more of your wonderful knowledge...thoroughly enjoyed that Paul...big thanks from me and all of us for all of your time and effort..
I'm very happy with the longer format - nice to sit back and have a cup of tea while just taking it in. I suppose there's a balance to hit so probably it's a question of having some of each, all depending on the individual trip out.
Really enjoyed that! As a Scarp owner for many years I would recommend pitching the ends as tight as possible before you guy out the sides/trekking pole guys
Paul, as a snowed in "Mainer" here in Maine, USA (with close ties to the UK) I can say the longer videos are great. Makes me want to get out backpacking but winter isn't my thing as they say, so it is great to live vicariously through your videos until the snow here melts. I am glad that things with RUclips seem to working out for you. Be well, keep making videos and living your hobby. Cheers!
I’ve not used my x poles with my scarp 1 yet. I’ve had it out in decent winds too. I’m a kite surfer/windsurfer so a little more attuned to the strength/ direction of wind than normal folk. Tent handles owt you can chuck at it 😂. I’m going to a scarp mod video as I think it may help a lot of people out. Keep your eyes peeled. 🤙
Great video Paul enjoyed that you enjoyed being out on the fells. As for the negative folk they can say what they want, You and I and a good many others enjoy what we do simples.
The sound of wind on a tent is so relaxing. Like raindrops. Dont stress on video length. Do whats feels good for you. Thx. Appreciate your hard work and time.
It was really nice to see a longer video from you. Always nice seeing people cooking when they camp and not depending on MRE. Little tip. If your hip flask was finished you could have put some hot water in. Stuck it inside a sock or glove so as not to burn yourself and shoved it at the bottom of your sleeping bag for a while as a mini hot water bottle.
Really pretty spot and a nice little mod for the stove! I really enjoyed the length of this video. Feels like we are getting to experience the entire camp with you! However, I am a bit biased towards making longer videos lately myself. I also found it interesting to see how the scarp handled the wind without the additional poles so I appreciated you showing that! Great video Paul! ATB
Got a windburner and first thing I did was dig out a spare sock to put the gas canister and stove to stop it rattling. Other than that can’t fault it, the pot is 1l so is big enough for wet MREs and filling flasks for the 2nd day in winter. Had to ditch the measuring cup though as it kept getting stuck on the base
I found the longer format great for getting a real feel for being there. Excellent for a newby like me. And being new to backpacking, it would be “gravy” if you included a kit list at the end. Loving all your content Paul. Many thanks 👍
I don't normally leave comments but I have to let you know I'm a huge fan of the longer videos. I managed to watch this with my headphones while the Mrs watched EastEnders.
Longer videos for me Paul, how can you not want more of a good thing? I watch Tony 's 3 hour plus videos, very relaxing, you feel like you've been on the trip with him 👍
The only freeze dried food I carry is for unexpected emergency forced stay out in the wilds (beyond my planned outing). Other than that I always take 'real' food for my meals; a lot cheaper, far better and healthier on the tummy; oh and much more filling! Freeze dried food, is a thing that is going out of fashion! Paul keep the longer videos coming, love em.
Love the longer videos Paul. From a personal point of view I feel like I'm just getting into a video then realise there's only a few minutes left. Great to see you in a new area not too far from me in Staffordshire and that you bought a Soto!
Good video Paul. I've had a Scarp 1 since 2009 and have had many Munro summit camps in Scotland including winter with winds up to 58 mph on Creag Meagaidh. I bought the Cross poles with the tent initially but found they were better in the snow and didn't make much difference in windy conditions. I changed the guys to 3mm dyneema to prevent slippage. Not sure if the updates to the Scarp over the years have slightly affected its ability in the wind but the older version I have is much more taught and less flappy in much stronger winds than you experienced . Hope you enjoy the Scarp 😊
@@PaulMessner sounds like a plan! I've made a few mods over the years but I've had the Scarp so long I've forgotten some of them 😊 I remember swapping the main pole for a 9mm Hilleberg equivalent a few years ago but I think the current version has a 9mm pole as standard anyway. It's an excellent tent and you'll be able to get it set up the way you like it. I never head out specifically to camp in wild conditions but sometimes the forecasts are very inaccurate and it's coped very well in very windy conditions on summits all over Scotland. I only take the cross poles if snow is forecast.
Love it in the Shropshire Hills, the ponies are quite used to people but it's best to let them come to you. I've recently bought the bigger MSR spider to increase stability, not tried it on a camp yet but feels well made and stable.
