In this video I head out with Andrew Beavers for 3 days hiking & 2 nights wild camping in the Peak District National Park. Our aim is to complete the Derwent Watershed Hike which is a 40 miles circular hike over rock, moorland and hills of the dark peak area of the park. It was tough going but well worth the effort.

Stop being so hard on yourself Paul Messner. You are never too old to do these multi day hikes. And the more you do, the fitter you get and the easier they feel. Big respect to you pal, I hope it gives you confidence to do some more in future my friend. Keep up the great content
I agree, it's simply more of a fitness thing rather than age.
Yeah keep at it. My dad's 60 and drives me mad making excuses he's too old for exercise. If you are finding it a challenge then you probably need it aye 😆
I don't remember pauls channel being about multi hiking? It was about him doing a cheeky overnighter and the kit he took with him in a beautiful location. Or at least from what I always remember his channel. Multi day hiking i cant think of anything more boring personally.
It's as simple as use it or loose it.
@@niksgee what about football?
My last proper backpacking trip was in 2017, the year I turned 50. Later that year, I developed arthritis in my knees, which brought my hiking days to an end. Or did it? I've been slowly building back, and your videos have been an inspiration. Heading out this weekend, actually.
Search for backwards sled drag for knee health. Game changer even for guys with knee injuries from basketball or martial arts
Wow, that's a wonderful sight. It's like a scene that reminds me of the alien planet. The square rock on the hiking trail is unique. The sound of raindrops falling on the tent made my ears happy. Friend, thank you for inviting me to a wonderful place 😄 💕 😊 🙏
I think you two have just finally convinced me to get over this way at some point.
Love the part where you both have a chat about challenges and achievements. And hiking pace! Don’t beat yourself up - Andy wouldn’t walk with you if he didn’t thoroughly enjoy your company! What pack is that and have you both got the same pack?
Love it Paul. Do you have those moments, in the first hour or so, of 'why the hell am I doing this to myself (again)? The means (and the pains) justify the ends. Great video mate 👍
Just to add - what a spectacular walk, brilliant effort; so much respect for your self awareness of your capabilities and determination to carry on and enjoy the journey. Brilliant 👏
Good job! A timely reminder that it's all about doing stuff, and less about the kit you do it with. More please.
Nice little adventure in some testing conditions! 2 nights/3 days is a nice amount for me as well. That water looked especially peaty 😆 thanks for sharing, including the walking past the camera and retrieving it 💪 cheers
Hey Paul, if you're struggling with knee pain with these hikes it may be that your glutes are a bit weaker/inactive but age may certainly play a role. I find that doing light glute exercises *regularly* like reverse lunges or glute bridges takes the stress away from the knees and loads the weight onto your glutes/hips instead. Hope that might be helpful!
I love to watch Andy’s version and then your ,you get two great perspectives. Great mini adventure well done challenging terrain and good daily distances walked. 😁👍
Just done a 35 mile 2 night 2.5 day solo wild camp and hike in the Peak District. I'm pushing 55 years old and it's a first for me. Loved everything about it apart from the blisters. They were down to a bad footwear choice.
Thank you for sharing and the inspiration!
I'm assuming night two was somewhere near Outer Edge.
I appreciate you sharing the tough parts of your days with your audience, Paul. Every good adventure has them
I love that big square rock, best place for a quick rest and a brew
Love the look of this walk, I'll add it to the list! Completely with you when you spoke about feeling the pressure of keeping up. I much prefer solo hiking now and getting into my own stride, loads more enjoyable. Great video 🥾
Love the slabs, it’s the grassy unmarked paths I struggle with, especially on Kinder and all the bogs on top
With all those unnecessary cairns there I would say that it is messy. So much for leaving the place as you found it. You are being to hard on your self Paul. I'm 74 and still out there in the mountains of NZ climbing up to 2000 M with 20 kg. Not bragging just saying age is not a barrier, go at your own pace. I've slowed down a bit over the years, but what I have got is stamina, and I watch the young ones burn them selves out before we get to the tops. Where it would take me 8 hours to my destination, it now takes 9 hours, so what !! I still get there. There will of course be lots of 'huffing and puffing' but that is all part of the trip. I have rambled on a bit ( no pun intended). Just keep on doing it mate, go at your own pace, Cheers from NZ
You're too hard on yourself, good sir. It's ok to not be as fast as the others in the group. Pushing yourself to keep up only turns into no fun experience for you or an injury along the way. Take it easy.
Me and my friend started going on walks every weekend and walks have now turned into hikes. We do it for our fitness but also because of how good it feels to manage such enormous accomplishments. We are no athletes and take our time but we get there. You are truly inspirational, humble and simply lovely to watch. You've shared some great advice and tips for our own hikes and what kit to bring with us. Keep doing what you're doing. You're brilliant!
Well done Paul, really respect your honesty about your struggles - well done for slogging through it and getting to your destination. Great vid.
That was a decent hike there Paul. You earned that beer:)
No two humans are the same. Even at my most fit, I had trouble with inclines. (Having come from flat land, maybe not surprising) I could run, bike, cross-train-but put me on a steel hill and it was huffing and puffing all the way. The older I get the more I realize that it’s the journey-not the pace. It’s not a race. There will always be someone faster, fitter, better-SO WHAT! You did it! And I am super impressed and proud of you.
Hi Paul great video the three of us bumped into you on your walk up to snake summit great to finally meet you in person and keep up the good work and upon meeting you both I’ve also subscribed to Andy’s Chanel keep up the good work as they not only great viewing but very educational thank you
Really enjoyed that mate the slightly different take on some of the filming worked really well top stuff..don't be too hard on your'e self either you did a great job its a tough route we did across some difficult terrain & you still beat me to the cars ;-).. im sure you enjoyed that beer lol..hope the aches & pains have eased..tfs pal..
Just started watching your vlogs (thinking of doing Laugavegur in Iceland!) - really enjoyed this! I’ve dragged my kids up Win Hill…😊
Excellent video. The UK has some gorgeous terrain! Thanks for sharing
Nice route, done most of it in parts never thought of doing it as a loop! Its a tough old slog alright, since doing multi day hikes, i have a new found respect for people doing things like the C2C or CWT
Thanks for your amazing videos. Me and my boyfriend love watching them together, you make us laugh every time.
Can't wait to get back out there!!
Good on you Paul Messner, those were pretty long days. Great to be "out" with you again. Respect from New Zealand.
I really enjoyed this perspective of hiking. It’s very easy for people to hide the truth or show a narrative that isn’t the truth. Takes a brave man to say he isn’t perfect.
The natural beauty was just tremendous ....
Being short and stocky myself, I always was jealous of the tall guys in my unit with their long legs. A 35 mile hump with packs and gear was a stroll for them, while I literally jogged the entire way. No sympathy in the Marines though, you're there, you do it and congratulate yourself upon completion. You're doing and have done what a large percentage of the other hikers/campers haven't, and you tacked on a few more miles running up and down for your camera. You deserve two beers!
That was some achievement, you made it well done, my days of doing that are gone forever I'm lucky to be able to do 100mtrs now I even started breathing heavily as you were going up the hills. Thanks for sharing.
I couldn't do 39 miles. So be proud of that. Also, please take care of your mental health. Being happy is important. You seemed happier when doing a job, and doing wild camping/hiking in your spare time for fun. This is how your channel grew. Take care paul, remember to take care of you too.
Honestly, well done. You have accomplished a great walk, learnt about your pack, about yourself and will be so much better prepped for your next one. Give yourself a pat on the back, reflect on the journey and plan your next. If you're in the southern uplands give us a shout :). Once again well done mate.
what a fantastic video paul. made me smile getting to the top of mam tor and seeing im not the only one who visits when its windy.
Very rare I’m up there and it’s calm 😂
Brilliant Paul, what an enjoyable video its certainly a great hike. I enjoyed your little chat with Andy, very interesting.
My knee is bad at the moment but as soon as its better I'm doing that.
All the best Paul.
Thanks.
👍
Taking on a multi day hike after not doing one for a while can be exhausting. The feeling of accomplishment when you're done is so good! It might feel difficult while in the process of completing the trip, but at the end of the day you won't regret stepping up to the challenge.
I live in the US, but I love watching your videos because I enjoy seeing terrain in other parts of the world that I've never explored before. So interesting to see the characteristics of the land, and geology in this District. I have never hiked in an area where there's domestic sheep just hanging out with you! Not only am I enjoying what you share in your videos, it's actually been fascinating to see this part of the world from a hiker's perspective.
Time to go camping. With your host Paul Messner.
Well done fella : that stretch from BL H is a real killer no paths just graft 🤣 👏
Really enjoyed that. Two great guys. Well done buddy.
Hi Paul glad I watched your kit video first, that's a good achievement almost 40 miles and not over the easiest terrain.
Dave B. Thailand.
Awesome video. Really enjoyed watching it. See a couple of places I have been and it’s made me want to go back again
Simply awesome Paul 😊
I'm so glad RUclips recommended your channel to me 👍😀
The whole point of walking together is actually walking together. Your mate wouldn’t be my choice of hiking companion tbh. Keep up the great videos Paul 👌🏽👌🏽
I’m doing a multi day hike in the Lake District soon. Honestly I don’t want to hike 15-20 miles a day. I’ll be happy to do 10-12 and spend more time having lunch, looking at views and the end of day camp. It’s meant to be fun not a chore!!!!
Looked a cracking outing! Good to see you and Andy together, at least one person I can understand in the video 😉😂
Awesome workout paul . Great views and so cool to have you're own personal trainer. Well earn beer there. 👍
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Cheers!
Good to push yourself Paul every now and then. 39 mile. Dude that's hiking some great terrains.
The night stops are strange places to sleep. I guess on a clear night it may have been more terrific I imagine. Yes the rain, the wind kept you stressed. You done it along side your mate good job men:)
From Craig.
Paul you did well to keep up with Andy, great effort. Thanks for showing us the terrain with its varied technical difficulties.
It’s not supposed to be easy! That’s the fun and the challenge of what we do. It’s not a race, I must admit I do yomp it a bit when I’m on my own, but I enjoy walking with others and smelling the roses along the way. I’d class myself as pretty fit for 41 (I know I only look 30 but it’s true 🤪) but some days are a real graft. It’s the sense of achievement when it’s over that makes it all worthwhile and sends you back out to do it all again.
I’m not a big multi dayer cause I’m bone idle early in the morning 🤣, but it’s definitely something that I’d like to more. Looks like you both had an amazing time 👌🏼
Good to see Beavo putting you through your paces Paul, looked a good backpacking trip. C'mon the slabs. 😜 Can you see yourself doing more long distance stuff?
In Australia a "slab" is a box or carton of 24 beer cans. Something to think about when you're complaining about slabs. 🙂
@@landzender that's a decent slab mate. 🍻
Good stuff and no doubt Andy kept you right. Look forward to see what other multi day trips you have planned. Atb
Those slabs are placed there not for your comfort but for conservation, after an army of hikers have passed thru the bog the erosion devastates the terrain, an army can pass over the slabs and barely leave a trace. I was impressed with all the stonework around the top of the hill. And the little and not so little piles of stones? no longer cute, just my opinion. knock them all over and spread the stones around again. I do enjoy your videos and appreciate the effort you put into it, especially showing yourself slogging up a hill, knowing you will then have to go back down to retrieve the camera and do it all again So much backtracking. I'm sure most people don't see that part. Andrew. (In New Zealand)
Enjoyed this Paul. Loved the chat with Andy, very interesting.
Great achievement, that. You did great. I enjoyed the chat you had with Andy too. Love this one Paul. ATB
Great video! I'm heading to the peaks soon and you have given me some inspiration on places to visit. You have gained a new subscriber 🙂

Hi Paul not sure how to reply to your message on TEXT Telegram regarding prize claim?
I had a comment regarding winning too

@@chriswellstead776 I'm lost lol bloody mist easier pmsl
@@chriswellstead776 I did the same but think it was a scammer. I had a chat using Telegram but the way the conversation went it didn't feel right. I asked some questions that they didn't answer and then the user went offline. Don't take any chance folks!
Marvelous country, inspiring video. Cheers.
Thanks for this one . It's 1.30am and I'm at work on a meal break . This will see me through till 6 and home time.
Great Job Paul! Super video. Deffo one I’d love to get done.
Very well done Paul and Andy 👍👍
Well in lad, top video! I walked around bleaklow in the rain a few months back and that terrain just zaps the life out of you. I was blowing out my arse and im just under 30 and did 4 years in the army. Dont be so hard on yourself, you're not slow or unfit, Andy is just a freak of nature hahah
The tortoise and the hare comes to mind
I love multi day hiking , incredibly hard on body and mind but you learn about yourself and see parts many haven't ventured, well done mate
2 Cool guys!!! the route looks great. Well done on keeping up with Andy, he's built like a whippet
Well done 👏 Paul.
Great video, and you did really good Paul.👍
A great effort and well done. Need to be careful not to overdo it though if you’re having troubles with your knees. I overdid thing myself, carrying too much weight on boggy ground and then going out again with a heavy load before I had fully recovered and I ended up with a torn miniscus. Doctors don’t advise surgery due to risks of arthritis and now 20 months later I’m still waiting for it to fully heal.
another great video paul, good to see the trangia out, its so light and ideal for the multi day hike. be proud of your achievement mate as 39 miles would have felt like 100 miles with all the gear to carry am sure.
Looks awesome. As a hammock camper I would be stuffed on such a trail.
Great video, really enjoyed this one, I hope you are up for more of these kind of videos not that I don't appreciate the effort you put into your review vids but this one really hit the spot for me and has got me fired up for a multi day trip myself.
Great video and to be perfectly honest for a big lad Paul I would definitely give yourself a pat on the back instead of knocking yourself... I mean just shy of 40 miles in 3 day's that's awesome dude. Hats off to yer 👏
Fantastic Paul, thank you for getting out there and putting in the effort to bring us this great video. I watched both yours and Andy’s videos and it’s great to see the different styles on the same walk.
Nice to see you on a more challenging walk Paul. Good luck with everything
Paul, the last couple of weekends I've done day walks on Bleaklow & Howden Moor it's tough going without a decent path to follow, so good effort & the bonus is you don't have to do it again. ATB Rob
First time on Bleakow i said to some friends "it reminds me of the north moor of Dartmoor but more rugged which is where I grew up on ". That was in 72 , I was up there again in 96 and yes the slabs made the walk a lot quicker and easier.
Tbh I enjoyed seeing you putting yourself through that.its so different to easy 1 nighters.although keeping up with Andy would be difficult for most people.atleast now you have a base level to either just stick with the easy camps or push yourself to do more and use the kit you buy and what it's intended for.
Massive effort, well done! Although at 6:22 I thought you became a bit... monoslabic 😂👍
Such beautiful countryside, and the manicured paths and hinged gates are so very civilised. Not sure I would enjoy the wind, though...
great video. thanks for your honesty Paul, good job on the filming despite being so tired!
Well done Paul.
Those slabs to Brown Knoll are a fairly recent addition, it used to be just a VERY boggy path where you could sink in up to your knees in places. That was grim!
Keep em coming !
There is nothing quite so tiring as trying to keep up with someone faster than you. They always seem to have a rest while waiting while you keep slogging. I nearly always hike alone now.
Same way. I like to go at a comfortable pace that allows me to take in the views, and appreciate what I'm hiking through. I also don't like to be exhausted on the first day of a multi day hike! There are certain people that I just don't hike with anymore because I always feel bad for stopping to look at something or even just stop for a water break. I don't go on hikes or backpacking trips in order to race to the top, I go out in order to take in the views and enjoy myself outside.
I mean if they are considerate and sensible they'll just rest with you. Don't misconstrue speed with ignorant behaviour!
@@NeesyPlaysGuitar Agreed, although there are definite style differences I've noticed. Some people are very goal oriented, and they go out to get to the end of the walk. Others want to enjoy the journey, and probably wouldn't care if they made it the whole way or not. I'm not saying either is better, but when you attempt to mix the two at least one party is going to have to compromise on their experience.
Grandma Gatewood walked the PCT with nothing but the things she could find in her house. It’s not about age it’s about fitness and determination. Multi days are hard work but they will get easier the more you do. Don’t make me get Jo 😋
Superb vlog both , really enjoyed views and commentary 👏🍺
Enjoyed that a lot ...thanks .
Thanks!
Thanks so much for this mate. Jo and I really appreciate your support.
That was a really great change in video format, appreciate how tough it was for you but you did it and that’s the main thing. Well done 👍
Hi Paul. Just got back from my first 3 day solo camp in the mountains. It was beyond exhausting, I could barely move at the end tbh, but I'd been watching your videos and it definitely helped me prepare for it! thanks mate
well done mate 👏
Loved the video Paul, It's a cracking walk and your beautiful footage and great commentary really make it come alive. Keep up the good work!
Great hike that buddy. Totally agree about the distance, 3-4 days is perfect for crushing 50 odd miles. Great video as always 🙌
you need the slabs on Brown Knoll, its just a bog i camped up there the other week after that dry spell and it was still a boggy mess
Nice bit of Pennine Way in there.
WELL DONE MATE!!!
We always used to walk behind our slowest on our yomps. The person will still do their best, probably better as their soul isn't as destroyed. (you can always push a bit if time is tight etc) but afterall if you're all together then that's how it should be and planned as such time wise. Small tip, neither of you use your walking poles efficiently either accending or descending. Definitely something to look into.
Thanks as always for the videos and best wishes for the next adventure
Beautiful hike. Great weather, looks like fun.
Leaving a like to support your channel.
Some hike, well done. 👏 I wish Donegal had those slabs. It's all walking through bog and heather.
Great one this mate, well done.
❤️ another great video! Looking forward to next big hike.. learn so much from these
3 days 40 miles over that terrain …. Ouch !! On the porridge make a liddl reflectix pouch/ coozie pour in the hot water mix and slip it in there and wait ten minutes you’ll have piping hot perfect porridge👍👍 great video as always Thsnks for sharing your journey 👍👍
Good 3 day outing! I do like Win Hill. I imagine your ascent stats were impressive as well. Thanks for sharing!
