- It's June and myself and @AndrewBeavers are backpacking 80 miles along the Cumbria Way in the Lake District. Our plan is to complete the trip in 5 days, hiking and camping along the way, so all of our gear will have to fit in our backpacks. Yes Paul zero drop / wide toe box are what our bodies were made for when footwear is needed- also trying barefoot shoes made a huge difference in my hiking- welcome to the club! Great post by the way- gaiters may be a good idea as I want to get some for my Altra shoes. Thanks for sharing! 👍🌿🍄🙏

I'm pretty impressed at how light everything was in the end with all of the extra bits and bobs you had. I guess having such a lightweight tent means you can afford to have more stuff overall. I just bought a 'lightweight' OEX tent and that's still about 2.5 kg and a 400 g sleeping pad. But considering my previous tent was 4.5 kg and the mattress 1.9 kg (plus about 0.8 kg for a foot pump), this is still a huge reduction). I don't use walking poles so I wouldn't save weight by also using them as tent poles.
I'm glad I believe I can trust what I think I understand that you displayed through your talent here.
You must be pretty much confident and experienced Outdoorsman. This makes my favorite equipment review. No joke I would copy you and buy everything you have shown but I'm not organized enough.

I would suggest a very similar but more ingenious one:

Hi Paul, would like to do the cumbria way looks amazing with plenty of pub stops.
1 way to test you is doing a few back to back 30 milers and doing the pennine way.
Love you just weighed it in the end, and all the gear setups youre creating would be awesome if you did that with the budget version or others. When you bring your own gear, its always interesting to se what you bring with you. Love you videos mate!

Great Paul and loved the honesty of your trip. Re hats; I was inspired by Hazy, using a fell running hat. I bought one by 'Buff'. Very lightweight, breathable, comfortable and kept the sun off my ginger noggin' and out my eyes.
'The Unsung Heroes of Hiking' could be a good video topic Paul, going through those little bits of kit (like the anti-chafe stick) that people don't tend to talk about - I'd definitely find it interesting!
Love the way you don't always buy premium kit. Decathlon in sheff is my go too.

Great video, as always. The only item of kit I shy away from recommending are 'shoes'. It is so personal, however zero drop shoes require a health warning.........I'd never recommend them, but if a walker has used them for months and years, fine. So many thru hikers on the AT had issues with them, not after 2-3 days, but 10-15 days. We all pack our fears to a degree, but whilst anyone can pack what they like, as they have to carry it, I'[d suggest for any longer hike (where you will feel the weight) you can reduce your clothing by 2/3rds
For years, Altras have been the #1 selling shoes for Thru-Hikers here in the USA. Been wearing them for 10 years.VERY COMFY! Topo Athletic are similar and I wear both. :)

I've been using Lone Peaks for about 18 months on all sorts of terrain. Really like them. Enjoyed this series 6 thanks for sharing.
First class stuff Paul. Terriffic camera work and commentary.
I enjoyed every moment of it and the last one was perfectly set up for us all to get an idea of the sort of equipment needed for this type of hike.

No one talk much but Durston (X-Mid) cloned this tent from the Sierra Designs - High Route 🙂 Sierra Designs - High Route Was realised in 2016 and Xmid came out 2018. Sometimes reality not as you want, fact is a fact 😊

A fantastic series, and it’s great to go through your kit afterwards to talk through what worked what didn’t but as you said had it not been warm or had you wild camped the kit would have changed accordingly. 👍

Army trick, take more socks, find a stream, boots and socks off and soak feet, shrink them back and fresh socks, great way to feel like you have fresh feet. You have some amazing Kit...

Best to d9 the west highway way in autumn or spring to avoid midges, hot weather & its less crowded, so you'll have better chance of camping spots, campsites, accommodation etc
We really enjoyed this mini series, you properly motivate us “ordinary mortals” to get out there, plus your humour is great. I know you've had some difficult times with the whole “YT life”, bit these 4 videos are top-notch 😀 How about a section of the South West Coast Path later in the year (when the weather is rubbish in the mountains)?
3 Comments Paul. 1.For long distance walking i found the Altra Olympus to be better than the lone peaks for the feet. It maybe because i walked a number of trails in the Lone Peaks but i definitely found the olympus to be kinder on my feet. Secondly, i used the new Zpacks Duplex Zip on the Cape Wrath Trail. It gave me shed loads of room and was awesome in terms of comfort and weight (730gms with groundsheet) and finally, For a walk i would suggest the West Highland Way in September or May. 96 miles, relatively easy walking with plenty of stopping points for rest/food. The scenery (once you leave Milngavie) just gets better and better... trust me, you'd love it.

Well done Paul. I embarked on my first multiday hike in May from Glenfinnan to Inverie in Scotland. The Platypus looks great!, I used a pure clear filter on my trip. It was a great filter, but leaking was a problem.

Great video. I'm going light...at 71 and a quadruple bypass 2 years ago, followed by 2 heart attacks 6 weeks ago. I have bought an X Mid2 which is about 1kg, as my son will be joining me.
West Highland Way’s a stunner Paul. I did it over 6 days with 15kg pack and I’m no athlete. Probably about the same time you were doing Cumbria during the heatwave😢 Great videos pal.

I've had the Xmid since 2020 and think it's an excellent tent. I used it when walking the Two Moors Way last year.
The walk across Dartmoor and Exmoor, coast to coast is a brilliant trail and worth adding to your list of possibles
Thanks for the detailed item-by-item breakdown. You've got me thinking about my sleeping mat (Xtherm all year round) and my sleeping bags (PHD 500 300 and half-bag)
Have you ever considered, or tried, just taking 1 shortsleeve Merino top and 1 longsleeve Merino top? You don't need to wash them for a 5 days trip, in warm weather you hike in the short-sleeve and if you get cold you add the long-sleeve over it, or at night wear the long-sleeve and if cold layer the short-sleeve over?
I mention it as those 5-day type trips are just on that cusp where Merino can be about to become stinky but you can use 2 Merino tops to layer to temperature.
It means you're only carrying one of those tops and no washing of the tops. 2 wool tops is very warm, add a windproof over it's exceedingly warm.
For sun - a regular longer Buff works for me, for when sun is straight up (and strongest) I twist it and double it, before/after noon as sun goes to side I'll single-layer it and drape on the sun side. I used to use a cap, and indeed owned a Tilley, but I found a long Buff covers all situations.
Water - I'm currently trying the BeFree filter. Too early to comment on effectiveness but certainly is fast+light.
Happy to see you made use of food+pubs on the way, absolutely the best way given your calorie outputs the dehydrated meals can't replace, and so not a surprise your 350ml meths bottle not used. I still think meths for this trip is probably best just because there's so many cafe/shops/pubs meths is a backup and is lighter than gas but say a Vango 250ml or something smaller would probably sufficed.
Hope to cross your path out there, we missed each other by 2 weeks many of the routes you were I'd just done. Yes we got lucky with the weather..

Great couple of episodes Paul. Interesting to see the reasoning for your gear choices. Did the West Highland Way last week and wore Topo Terraventure 3's and highly recommmend them (with Superfeet Trailblazer insoles for a bit more comfort). Atb Andy
Yeah and the topos have a stone plate for extra support which I I don’t think the altras do. Same toe space as the altras. My topo Terraventure 3s cruised through the CWT. Awesome shoe.

Welcome to check Finlands national parks. There's a hikers heaven here and would be nice to see some of it trough the eyes of foreigner. Looking for a large area with alot of paths maybe U.K.K ( National park next to Saariselkä named by our president Urho Kaleva Kekkonen). If you look for a more wild country and less people, most of northern National parks will have a wildernes area as well. Lemmenjoki would be my recommendation and it has also really good paths as well.

Lad if you like Lone Peaks you gotta try Topo I were a Altra wearer before trying Topo I'd not go back now still nice wide toe box and now do a zero drop version. Sole unit has far better grip and certainly more durable. Get some .

I enjoyed the series, very light packing nice. I have the Sea To Summit Ether light sleeping pad it’s a bit thicker than the one you have there so comfortable as i sleep on my side, it’s has a nice Rvalue and it’s 500 grams 😊 I have this same tent also in solid also it’s brilliant for hiking in cold Tasmania australia or nz South Island
Great stuff Paul. I moved to the Lone Peak 6 a while back and then got the Olympus 5 with vibram sole.The Olympus seems a lot more solid with better support. Love them both and wear all the time. Look like the shoes that your mam used to make you wear for school but I put comfort first. Enjoyed the Cumbria way walk mate.

I'm doing the Herriot Way in October with my border collie, really looking forward to it, not too much hill walking just p.enty of scenery...and pubs😂. I reckon you would enjoy that one Paul. Lone Peak 7's arrive tomorrow so all good 👍
