Bare Bones Wild Camping: The minimum gear I’d camp with

- In this video I head out wild camping in the UK (Peak District) with just the bare bones when it comes to backpacking gear. For me anyway. It was nice to get back to a more minimalist camping style that was much more simplistic. However...there was one bit of gear that I regret not taking with me. Still a great trip and another couple of Ethels ticked off along the way.
I have an MSR Tindheim 2 Tent plus a Gopro Hero 11 & Insta360 action camera bundle up for grabs over on www.messner.co... Good luck to everyone who enters the competition 🤞🏻

sadly it is UK only so no win for me
It also costs 3 pounds for a ticket
And you have no idea how many tickets are sold.
Well... It's UK only 😢
So not "good luck everyone"...
@@adamgrimsley2900 3 pounds is nothing and helps the channel but doesn't help when it is only for the ppl in the UK and not the rest of us... doh...
I'm sitting at 2,390 m. In Italy with my one person tent behind me, eating the leftovers of the crisps for my crisps and dry bread roll dinner. Downloaded your video before I left. Now I'm sitting on a rock watching it while I wait for the stars to come out properly which they almost have.
You have been a big inspiration so thank you!
Hi Paul...really enjoy your videos and so pleased if you don't mind me saying, to see you so much more relaxed than at a previous time...I turned 65 this week and can remember sneaking out of a boarding school dormitory at 14 to camp secretly in the woods at night for a rebellious few hours haha....Thank you for taking the time to be informative...interesting...and good humoured too...a genuine antidote to unremitting gloom on the news...Thank you again Paul....Liverpool Kev
Happy upcoming birthday Kev 🎉
I used a poncho to do the old man of Coniston when it was July torrential rain. Loads of people in top end waterproof jackets went past soaked to the bone. 1 even asked if we were dry and we were bone dry underneath! A small stove for a brew definitely is needed! Nice and peaceful camp!
Not a top end waterproof if they were soaked to the bone lol
Excellent
Paul, Another great video. Interesting to see how little one can get away with. For me, loving a hot brew, some from of stove remains a must. Thanks for sharing.👍🏻
You need your hot meal and a coffee mate.👍🏴🇬🇧⛺️
I am blown away by the scenery in your videos. Not much like it in Australia....
Can’t beat the summer months for going lightweight. Even better if it’s a good forecast. But as a big tea drinking Yorkshireman, I’d have to take a stove. 😎😎 Thanks for sharing.
Such a lovely site for an overnight! It's nice to go with just the simple things.
Like the back to basics camping, but can’t not have a brew! A stove is a must have for me.
Hi Paul, I love your videos and have always wanted to go wild camping but I thought it was illegal. You have inspired me to have a go and my son in law and I have a trip planned for Snowdonia. I just wish the kit was cheaper as I want to buy everything. Please keep up the great content and I will be trying to buy something through your links. Leave no trace :)
You Sir, are mad. Of the hundreds of nights I've slept outside, I've left my brew kit at home exactly 0 times. I plain refuse to be alive for the day without a coffee to start... I knew that's why you'd regret it before I watched. Fair play for doing it though.
I also can not start the day without a strong coffee. However if I'm going bare minimalist without a stove, I just make cold, black instant coffee, in a small cup. The instant coffee takes a few minutes to fully dissolve in cold water but it's good enough to get my early morning caffeine fix ☕😅
Great video.. I'm a cold soak guy now.. Once you go for it it's ok.. Even cold coffee 😊
Ice coffee delicious
I went stove less on my most recent wild camp in the Peak District. I didn't miss it at all. I think the one and only thing I may have missed was a coffee in the morning. I wonder if you may not have missed it as much had you taken something more desirable like a big flapjack or BLT sandwich or something like that for breakfast. I reckon mentally you may still have been thinking lightweight and long distance, hence things like crackers. I tend to just take the kind of food I would eat if I wasn't thinking about weight or being outdoors. I tend to take a meal deal sandwich, drinks, crisps etc and combine with other tasty satisfying snacks I know I'd eat if I wasn't on the hill. I love a flapjack and an egg or BLT butty in the morning. Eating dry crackers in the morning I'd be missing the stove too. Great video as usual. I love the Terra Nova Starlites but they are way out of my price range unfortunately.
Another great ,no nonsense video Paul.👍
No stove? Getting a brew on at the end of a long day is often the highlight. I would never go out without one.
Can always take a thermos
We could but opening the top of a thermos and sipping old tea isn't up there in our list of reasons why we go out in the hills.
Maybe we just love the process involced when making a cup of tea or hot choclate.
@@burnzy3210 It is much heavier. And take up mosre space too.
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Cheers!
Nice video but the stove is definitely a saving too far. But I use the same headtorch amnd multi-tool and water filter nice to see them get some visibility. I'm also interested in the Altra Olympus footwear, please do a review of those once you have the miles in.
You're brave, considering what the weather has been doing to us this year. I'm writing this in the first 2 minutes of the video.
Just wanted to drop a quick comment of appreciation. I enjoy your videos a ton and it is inspiring me to maybe get out there. :)
Hi Paul, love all your videos and this one was no exception. I'd be interested to know the list of things you "didn't" take? Apart from a stove, everything you showed is pretty much what I take for an overnight backpacking camp.
I really enjoyed the simplicity of your kit. I am still paring back my gear a bit at a time as I become more confident with my skills and leave my fears behind. Lol…that being said, I’m carrying the Katadyn pocket filter after having two Sawyer and Be Free filters fail. The bombproof design weighs just under 2lbs but with everything else stripped down, my base weight is still under 12 lbs.
Excellent video Paul and the scenery was fantastic
An Optimus Svea stove and pot would have completed my similar kit. Minimal camping while traveling on my motorcycle or ATV in the mountains of Appalachia USA. Good vid. Beautiful area.
That's a nice looking tent. Even better view from it.
Hello Paul. Please do a review on Blackout tents. getting a good night's sleep which you appreciate as mentioned in your videos can be essential to have a great experience. Yes you can put an eye mask on! but these tents can also provide protection from the Sun in hot weather ( apparent lately in certain countries) and early sunrises. Cheers mate.
Berghaus Grampian 2 I picked up for £150 and has a blackout inner. Only drawback is it weighs 4.5 kilos. It is sturdy as though and took 60 kph winds at Fort William no problems. 👍😁
I do the sandwich thing often. Nothing wrong with it, yours sounded nice! I took the same poncho to the Arctic with me, its an excellent bit of kit. Ive even used mine as a bit of a tarp.
Another cracking video Sir ! Just a helpful reminder you don't need to carry the kitchen sink for a simple camp
I was actually surprised when I weighed my flex tail pump, I found that it weighs the same as my pad's pump sack, plus it's a Iight so I could leave my head torch at home 👍
Back to Basic's....Brilliant
Good to see you in the white peak. It is an incredible area but wild camping spots are far more limited and more difficult for one to remain concealed.
Light and simple is a great way to go, Paul, but you could indulge in some cold coffee and some cold soaked porridge or flapjac or something not so brutal!
Great vid and great camp spot 😉. Thanks for the mention.
Hi Paul - In the video you said you were using a sea to summit comfort plus mat, but it looks more like the comfort light and your link pointed to the Light one.
Peace
Your getting fitter Paul 😊 your breezing those hills this is a basic camp I’m going to try thanks for the video great edit
looking great Paul and if you get too cold I see a lot of fleeces walking about that can keep you warm 😛
Paul I'm curious - I have a starlight 1. There is only 1 central rear guideline , not the two extra coming from the sides of the pole- were these added by yourself ?
Interested in doing some of those nights out myself, is it legal to camp anywhere within reason obviously, thanks for the great videos 👍☀️
It is north of the border. Right to roam it's called.
What about bring a small thermos for your coffee. Have to be a good thermos though to stay hot that long.
Absolutely beautifull landscape.
Got to agree on the poncho , i would say they keep u dryer cos of the airflow lol
Lightening the mood
Hi Paul. Please give us an update on Reggie.
Ah the angel of the north quilt. You're right about food and stove for a 1 nighters, you really don't need them.
I said the same on my last video about not always needing hot food on one nighters. I camped on kinder last wknd and just got a meal deal from Tesco 😂. This wknd tho I’m cooking steak 🥩 lol great video as always pal 🫡 lovely chilled out camp ⛺️
Probably the best one yet young man✅
Hi Paul, what's the little multitool that you used? Cheers
Fantastic vid Paul!
Hi Bob, thanks for the video. What would you leave behind/change if doing this again. For me if I was doing it I would go for a smaller tent and look at panniers for the bike. That bike helmet you had on was a beast as well! Great for protecting the head if you come off.
I don't get the night clothes lark even when camping I just sleep in my boxers, plus you know you can probably get a self heating coffee at Tesco as I know they used to sell a self heating hot chocolate at least (had some extreme naming jazz on it)
Great idea paul, simplicity and ease of enjoying a lovely relaxing night alone in a beautiful easy access spot. Really going to encourage those with little or nno experience of wild camping. Nice video paul. 🙏
1min in looks amazing up there
Nice one Paul, what a lovely evening!
Cracking video Paul. Simple and just showing how easy it can be to get out for a night.
Liking the new camera set up Paul!
Have you tried using trekking pole(s) with a poncho-tarp to make some extension to the tent? Wet weather Vestibule-extension, or June's sun dawn shade? I've got the poncho but not yet tried that idea.
Great video Paul. Quick question - how are you finding the Altra Olympus trail runners?
Nothing but beear necessity 🎶
Looks like another cracking camp mate 👍
How you getting on with the Altra Olympus 5 ?
Tempted to get a pair but waiting to see if you are going to do a review on them
Oh man! For UK residents only😢. I get it though, shipping/handling would be costly. Nice that 10% of ticket sales goes to kids with cancer. Good on you Paul!
nice one Paul another great vid. really like the content you put out keep up the good work, maybe ill see you out there.
Hi Paul,
Great to see you back in action, back to normal. You did manage to get some great colours, I think I would have felt naked without a stove, but now and then it’s a great reminder of how little you actually really need. Did you really have just one biscuit for brekky?
Cheers
Graham
Very close to where my folks live and have thought about a camp up there a number of times. Some inspiration again Paul, many thanks.
It’s gorgeous round that way
Really enjoyed this one Paul, your videography keeps Improving and your making 5 star content. Keep up the good work really appreciate you making these videos.
Excellent Paul. I live just down the road from there. What camera have you got in follow me mode sir?
Had a few people on Tik Tok tell me a stove is essential, it’s not. Flask and a few sarnies. 👍
Thank you for your videos very good insights I would love to see a video on how you cope with the long night in winter or even from late oct to feb as walking while dark is quite dangerous and it get so dark for so long. Summer is fine long days but that does not last long but is their light that is good enough to read comfortably most lights for camping I do not find good enough and headlamps I don't find suitable. Reading is the only thing I can think of to do while long nights of camping occur but then one needs to sit upright and keep warm. You can only sleep so long... any advice no one seems to cover this ....
Great question and suggestion. I did make this video which might be a good starter ruclips.net/video/t4xiy5cKMgc/видео.html
@@PaulMessner Thank you will take a look :)
Thanks just took a look ...I do camp on my own land at moment but no internet its in a blind spot. Its maybe wise if I get a locator mmm. something off line for sure. @@PaulMessner
Paul.
Compeed anti blister stick?
Is it simply some Vaseline? You know like what boxers put on face?
Is it any good, please.
From Craig.
33ltr pack amazing.
Love the content, are you using a DJi gimble? Footage looks crisp sharp! 👌🏼🤙🏼
Class marra and what a location looked like the shire ..cheers paul all the best 😃🏕
That's a cool edit effect that looks like someone else is with you filming :)
16:55 " thats what she said "
What stoves best for cooking bacon egg
I find it odd that everyone wants to bring cooking equipment. I just camped for 3 nights and just brought 1 little jar of peanut butter, 12 tortillas, 3 sausages, and 1 little pack of nuts. . No cooking required. It could have lasted me 5 nights.
One of them closable burger grill things and a campfire is what I do for a one nighter but I always bring a stove for a 2 nighter (I bring a shovel to cover the burn hole, leave no trace etc)
Or a pizza delivered near enough to a campsite to retrieve before it gets cold!
Who was with you doing your filming?
do you have a motorized gimbal that tracks you when you are filming? Or a 360 camera and you do some tracking in software?
Isn't,t thar a lovely phrase when you think about it?This is home for the night.
How are the shoes holding up? I'm seriously considering them
I think we just watched the birth of an Ultralighter. Welcome. One of us… One of us…
Paul with no stove is like a gentleman without his hat... not right
I thought Tissington Hill was on private land?
Hi. Any thoughts on the trekker tent soar?
What microphone do you use that is able to cut out all that wind noise or do you remove it in postprocessing in the edit?
Quite possibly your best video to-date and what amazing scenery; the sky was mesmerising. 👍💯⛺
Have you finished with the NC500 series?
The little tracking camera you use is absolutely brilliant for when you are hiking and moving around, but is a little bit overkill/jaggedy for when you are relatively stationary - ie setting up the tent. Just a thought which might make things smoother for us viewers.
Cracking video still however
Paul ,if you were going minimalist could you get away with down pants and a puffer jacket instead of a sleeping bag?
are you all not allowed to make a fire there. I love sitting around a fire when I go camping? No judgement just wondering.
The Ai tracking is amazing, is that a GoPro 11 or Insta 360 feature please?
Great video Paul! Loving the regular camping content! Any chance you'll get a chance to go out in the new Exped tent some point? Would be keen to hear your thoughts on it!
Have you ditched the in Reach mini?
Nice one. I thru hiked the entire Appalachian Trail no stove. I prefer it to the fuss of cooking, cleaning your pot, replenishing gas/alcohol etc. The weight of 'wet' food isn't much more when you negate the stove equipment and extra water you need to cook with... and obviously no stove is lighter when you're on the last couple of days before a re-supply.
Which camera are you using that's tracking you? Or are you doing that in post? Cheers
look up French cooking cartouche.
It’s not usually aliens round there. It’s the werewolves you need to worry about 😂
Nice one Paul !
In your shoes I would have had an ear worm: "brew, brew, brew", over and over. A fold up hexy stove with a couple of blocks and a tin mug would have been minimal.
I think you could have then gone the whole Ronald Turnbull and just spent the night in a bare bivvy bag with your kit for a pillow. Easy for me to say!
Wow keren banget ini kak sayang kalau saya lewatkan videonya hehehe thank you kak sudah bikin video seperti ini dan channel-nya juga menginspirasi bahkan untuk saya cuma bisa motret motret doang hehehe
Camping without tea?
