Hay Box Cooking - there used to be cooking in the ground by boiling the water and placing the pan of food in a hole surrounded by hay which acts as an insulator, most people think that because it is boiling it's head off it is cooking faster when in fact water will stay at the same temperature 100 degrees C by losing heat through evaporation, so what I do (at home) is boil potatoes in a pan, put a lid on and turn the heat off then come back a few hours later to boil the water to finish off cooking and heat he food up. Try experimenting next time when you have more time to prepare your food.
Cracking video Paul, will have to have a look at the southern cross 2 for the winter. I’m on the hunt for a new one as I don’t have enough confidence in the cloud peak 2 in the wind and my berghaus tent weighs more than my roof tent! Had the southern Cross 1 & 2 and exactly what you said, all good but the inside is very limited, so I sold both off them after use twice. I will stick with my MSR Hubba Hubba. Thanks for another great video.

Nice night out chief. Good trick with the prawns. Was that the AOKA tripod I spotted there? Cracking bit of vlogging kit. The SC is definitely compact, but looks solid for the bad weather. 🏕
Sweet chilli king prawn coffee? Hmmm. reminds me off my mate who put both a lemsip and my coffee in one medicinal brew...you'll never forget the taste...
This is near buttermere, its a nice easy spot to get to as you can park at that waterfall. Next time i would recommend going up the waterfall side, theres a great spot with a view over the lake and sea if the weather permits 🙂

I use that highlander mat paul,in combination with my trekology UL80 - works a treat. I would suggest that you get Jo to run an additional stitch or two along the seam where the black edging connects, as mine has come off in parts so I ended up taling it off completely..saved a few grams i suppose.

Another great vid.im just back from the lakes had my new kuiu storm star 2p out for it's 1st trip.the space is amazing I upgraded from the zephyros 2 and was just fed up with so little space in that.it makes life inside your tent way better
Your time lapse was class, really good to see the night go by. It is a shame about the tent, I have had my eye on one since I saw it on your channel but being 6ft2 I reckon it would be too small for me after seeing the space you had available. I reckon instead of taking the scarp or hilleberg out, you should dust off the hammock. It would be great to see that. All the best 👍
You've definitely got to do the Wainwright's Paul 😀I'm on 165, but been on that figure for a couple of years, will have to rectify that soon! Great Video as always, all the best 👍🍺
Just checking the ground can take a stake.....or peg as you call it in the UK 🇬🇧 😂 I think you might have been thinking of 'STEAK' at the top of that section 😉
Hot one of the pink sponj things you recommended and I'm on exercise in a couple of weeks with my unit. Gonna get some jip for the colour but what a great bit of kit that thing is. Ended up getting it at Aldi for about £1.50
Like that you don’t share where you are even though it’s not Ard to work out if you know the Lakes 😉 Doing the Wainrights or any other hill list does take you to places you might not otherwise visit. My 3 year old Border Terrier has 11 to do and it’s been great revisiting places with him. Another good video 😂
Great video Paul, wow did that video open up in the morning! Tent looks fantastic, was some of the audio in the wind with the new GoPro? Cheers, Si interesting coffee flavours! lol
Hey Paul......Next time you have pasta of any kind, boil it at home first, drain and let it cool then pop into container. At camp, bring water to boil, drop in cooked Pasta for couple of minutes and it's ready to eat.
I can't think of something worse, mamma mia... At least cook it at home, add sauce and olive oil. At camp, just put it on the pan to warm it up... That's sounds better to my Italian ears
I personally really rate taking a little thermos flask with me, I finish off my cooking by pour it straight into the flask and normally prenheat the flash wirh hot water that ibuse to make a tea while I'm waiting for it to finish cooking. In the dales there's always water within a walk of most camping spots. This saves on weight as I pre make my own dried meals e.g rice, milk powder, dried parmesan, and dried mushrooms (buy cheap at chineese supermarkets), thyme, garlic and stock powder. You can even do it with noodles and crack and egg in there. Keeps the pan from burning as well this way as the rice won't stick.
I tick off enough things in my life without starting to tick off Wainwright’s too 😅. Would certainly love to do more though. More top tips for transporting food. Keep on Paul ❤️
Great Video.... Would like on your next video to comment on how badly do you get pins and needles lying on the same side for such a long time. I have to move around quite alot in the tent moving items from on end to the other because my arm starts to go numb.
Bloody hell looks tight in the tent. Not sure I'd handle that very well. Always fancied a Southern cross too.. maybe not! Cheers for the video bud! Atb
Great video! Just a thought, you and Andy could work together with the camerawork. Swap cameras, you can film him walking up the hill from behind and then he can film you walking up from in front, and vice versa. No need to double back and fetch the camera!
I have the Terranova Starlight 2 man tent. Easy 5 min set up, 1 .3 kg and ultra small pack size, plenty of room but it is a tunnel style tent. The quality is outstanding but not cheap.
I have never in my life been camping, I absolutley love your videos, I watch them every week! So interesting, however I have to say, camping just looks like, You carry a big daft bag up a hill, freeze to within an inch of your life, get piss wet through, cook a meal in a fabric cell, have a freezing nights sleep, then carry your big daft bag, back down the hill and go home... I just cant understand why people do it! But yet, I find my your channel in my personal top 5! Mental!!!
Kind of, but not really. Part of the attraction for me is having the skills and equipment to keep myself warm and safe and comfortable in challenging places and weather. If I was wet and freezing all the time that really wouldn’t be much fun. As they say in the army “any fool can be uncomfortable” 👍
I wanted to love my SC1, it’s low weight (ish) and solid, but it’s far smaller than the claimed inner dimensions on the TN site. It’s also terrible for condensation, couldn’t get rid fast enough tbh.
@@philholdsworth8280 yeah...kinda agree...I'm only a short arse but these 1man tents are imo great if you just need shelter...I've just upgraded from a cheapo 2man trail tent (great for what I paid for & huge)..to a more stable 4 season hydra 200...it seems the more you pay the smaller the tent gets🥴..which kinda makes no sense. less weight is fine but when the sizes go down too ..not so good. My 2man is still quite cheap but good enough for 1man & his 2 terriers 🦧🐕🐕.
@@Riiiizla My sentiments exactly. Just get a bit fitter. I once read this article in the Trail magazine about this bloke who didn't even take a stove just drank water and ate nuts and stuff, just to keep the weight down. Missing the point totally.
Am I a bit of an odd-ball because I will, every time, look for a sheltered pitch for my camp in the hills rather than on the top of an exposed mound as shewn on just about every video post?
Has to be said i usually skip through the promos (guilty as charged) but great thinking combining that with the continued filming of your food, kept me from skipping 👍
I've used a Southern Cross 2 since Oct. 2017 and it's the perfect balance (or compromise) for a 3 or 4 season tent. 2.3kgs is acceptable when you get 'plenty' of room for 1, head height is good (I'm 6'3"). 2 entrances so you can dump your wet gear in one and cook in the other. Rucksack goes into the tent. Set up procedure is peg out the four corners, set up the red pole skeleton and attach the end clips, then set up the blue cross pole, attach all the other clips and peg out properly. 3 x clothes pegs are packed with every tent I own, they are essential multipurpose items and sort out flappy doors, amongst other things. 2 downsides to the SC2. 1. Supplied pegs are crap, but you should always have a variety of different pegs with you. 2 Price. I bought this as an 'absolute' bargain from Outside in Hathersage for £339GBP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, but today prices are eye watering.
Hi Paul, the Southern Cross looks awesome. I have the Terra Nova Voyager (heavy) and the Laser Competition 1 (not good for high wind). This looks like the sweet spot in the middle. My next purchase I think. What pegs are you using?
I reckon they were "breakfast worms" Paul. Great vid, thank you. I'd like to see the Scarp again, but in REALLY filthy weather (he says from in front of the log burner). 😁
Hats off to you for going out in all weathers and not being just a fair weather camper. A few points though if I may. As picturesque as it might be for YT or IG, pitching your tent on top of the hill is just, well to be blunt, lunacy. Of course it is going to be windy. It's the most exposed piece of ground for miles and you've decided to pitch right in the middle of it. Get down off the top, in the lee of the hill and take advantage of the cover from the elements. As we used to say in the Army, any fool can be uncomfortable. Packing list - you really should have a change of clothes. By not doing so you put yourself at risk. You mention in the video that you put your waterproof trousers on having taken off your wet gear. Perfect time to put on your change of clothes. Not sure what your contingency would be if you ended up in the drink, with no spare change of clothes. Otherwise, can't fault your enthusiasm and energy in creating this content and putting yourself out there.
Another great vid paul 👍 for your future content I'd like to see more of the Scarp 1 as I've just purchased one and haven't had chance to get out in it yet as we've just had a baby and hope to get out in the next couple of weeks. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next one 👍

I tick off enough things in my life without starting to tick off Wainwright’s too 😅. Would certainly love to do more though. More top tips for transporting food. Keep on Paul ❤️
Nice video… was considering this tent but looks way to cosy for me.
I've had the southern cross 2. I sold this one because I thought it was too heavy for 1 man. Replaced it with the Scarp 1, but the older model.
Hi. LIKE. LIKE. CAMPING.
I have the Terranova Starlight 2 man tent. Easy 5 min set up, 1 .3 kg and ultra small pack size, plenty of room but it is a tunnel style tent. The quality is outstanding but not cheap.
Thanks for using our camper mat. This trip looked like a great wee escape. :)
Can’t see a link to the SEA To SUMMIT Ether Light XT Extreme sleeping mat that you’re using here.
Mental!!!
That is exactly what it is 😂
@@happycreativemind mind boggling! But soooooooo interesting!
It’s also terrible for condensation, couldn’t get rid fast enough tbh.
would love to come on a camping trip with you looks fun
Looks like sleeping in a cloth coffin.
I love your flat pack pasta jar ❤where did you buy it from?
Am I a bit of an odd-ball because I will, every time, look for a sheltered pitch for my camp in the hills rather than on the top of an exposed mound as shewn on just about every video post?
Has to be said i usually skip through the promos (guilty as charged) but great thinking combining that with the continued filming of your food, kept me from skipping 👍
Would be cool if you did a emergency shelter camp like the orange 1s you prop up the walking polls type 👍
Mate, your a brit, say peg first, enjoyed vid, love the lakes
See a bit of lightning in your time lapse do you get caught out often in storms up there.?
Loved that time lapse 👍
Hi Paul, the Southern Cross looks awesome. I have the Terra Nova Voyager (heavy) and the Laser Competition 1 (not good for high wind). This looks like the sweet spot in the middle. My next purchase I think. What pegs are you using?
Saw this on Patreon, but still enjoyed the masterchef class. :)
this is totally impressive... love you guys ^-^
Thank you for another great video
I reckon they were "breakfast worms" Paul. Great vid, thank you. I'd like to see the Scarp again, but in REALLY filthy weather (he says from in front of the log burner). 😁
Great vid Paul great views from up there.
Atb Graham
Morning gentlemen.
great vids sad you use square space as i see them on every vid almost what hell they have to do with wild camping or photography ?
Another great vid paul 👍 for your future content I'd like to see more of the Scarp 1 as I've just purchased one and haven't had chance to get out in it yet as we've just had a baby and hope to get out in the next couple of weeks. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next one 👍
Scarp out on the next camp mate
@@PaulMessner top banana 🍌 can't wait 👍
Loved the timelapse. Great content Paul
Go on Paul!
we're about did you camp Paul 👍
Well done Paul, usual outstanding performance.
Another good vid Paul. Cheers mate
Would like to see the soulo on the next one Paul. Great review of the southern cross.
wonderful camping video sir .
What pegs do u recommend for mountain camping 🏕 like a good all rounder?
What was the “gas canister” black cosy which looked very useful?
