    Just started a month ago, and the Kill Team advice is dead on. One box, 10 guys, all different weapon types, each giving you the opportunity and time to personalize them and learn how to paint. Chef’s kiss.

    Just be realistic with yourself is great advice. In Warhammer the idea of owning and painting a cool thing is a lot more common than the time and willpower it takes to follow through.
    I've found out to my cost that if youre an adult with a small amount of disposable income, its a lot easier to click a button or two on the eBay app or wander into GW while youre out with the kids than it is to actually find time to sit and hobby for more than 20min

    I have a few: 1) Start listening to Warhammer audiobooks earlier. 2) Accept that Combat Patrol boxes are cool, but also great for my Pile of Shame. I've heard it called a "Pile of Potential" recently, which sounds a lot nicer in my head. 3) Actually play a game at point during my first year in the hobby.

    I think the new Kill Team Set is one of the best they have ever done for beginners. First game could be involved with just using the colours and then in between you can start to add detail with your painting and you can take as much time as you want and even individualise each model.

    I also started in 9th ed with the Indomitus box, choosing Necrons. Funny enough, the shop I started at was so new and obscure, they still had 3 Indomitus boxes, even after 7 months into 9th ed. Thankfully for me the owner was generous on the info he provided. He went over the pitfalls of starting WH, even starting with a large army box. Of course some of that advice I forgot lol. While starting on Necrons, I also got into Grey Knights and Tau, which I eventually learned from and sold, time and resources that couldve been spent on my Necrons. Since then Ive only joined Killteam and Warcry. Now Im one more army in with Votann, and have started AoS with 2 armies.

      @the_kieran_show I was a bit more fortunate to have a shop owner sort of steer me in the right direction early on. I might not have followed everything he said, but eventually, I got back on track. It's why I love listening to Vets of any occupation or hobby. They made the mistakes, they learned and evolved. To pass that on to those ignorant or new is truly a wonderful human exchange.

    I started back in 9th with the starter set, if I could go back the only thing I would change was stopping myself from buying all the cheap secondhand firstborn and forgeworld models i collected before they eventually made it clear they were going to stop supporting them. I managed to buy and paint around 5000 points of old Deathwing Terminators and firstborn Ravenwing bikes before things going to legends or getting new models, that hobby effort would have felt much better if put into other models.

    YAY! You made sure left Kieran had a sticker on his forehead too!
    If I were to do it again (and arguably I have, since I sold all my Space Marines, Tau, and even my first force of Catachans), I would definitely take it a lot slower, not buy a big box (he says with Leviathan in his backlog, especially as his only 40k box), and definitely not buy a horde force (he says with Skaventide and several other large boxes of Skaven models).

    I started with Rogue Trader, played a lot of second, stopped, got back in with 4th, played a lot, stopped, recently saw some Instagrams and have now bought a bunch of new minis, plus dug out the old ones from where they were stored and put them in a display cabinet. I've always had some kind of hobby bug, whether it's figurine painting or other minis, so I got all the gear ready to go👍. First GW purchase in 16 years is a Seraphon Spearhead. I like the minis and can use them for other games even if I never buy another AoS item. PS, if you want your mate to play MtG but he doesn't want to buy any, just play cube draft with your own set. It's one of the best and fairest formats.

    I started 40k midway through 9th edition with Dark Angels, and I'm pretty happy to say that if I had to go back and start over, I'd pick them again. The only thing I'd change is that I started with the mindset of buying a box, painting it and not buying anything else in between, but that didn't last long and I ended up buying other armies lol, so I'd focus on finishing one army at a time at least.

    Very much agree with many points. I would never recommend buying a big starter box first. Get one unit. Any paint is better than no paint, and your first mini will never look as good as box. Also agree don’t build up a giant pile. I under estimated how long it takes to build tanks and monsters. I’ll be painting tanks and monsters rest of year… magnets add lots of time… once you get moving have 3-4 projects at different stages, building, priming, and detail.

    My name is Gregory and I am a WH40k addict.
    I started 4 months ago with the Ultimate Starter Set. I taught myself the basics on my 'Nids bc I didnt care about them. Finished the Space marine side and then I got the Dark Angels Combat Patrol (old one). Knocked that out and I just finished my Deathwing Knights last night. I got a box of Dark Angel Command Squad to work on in the background while I start on some other random Dark Angel heros (Azrael and Asmodai).
    HOWEVER, the new Kill Team with Plague Marines and Space Marines starter set was just pre-ordered and I am looking forward to using that to try to draw in a couple of friends :). Honestly I wish I would have started here but regardless I've really enjoyed the process.
    My Pile O' Shame is just the Blood Angel's Deathwing Army Box and the rest of my 'Nids.
    Love it and love the show! Cheers

    If I would start from zero again, I would have less armies and more scenary. I've been in the hobby since 1991ish.
    Besides chaos dwarves, I got all armies in warhammer fantasy (old world now) at least 3k points.
    wh40k ... All xeno's 5k+ but no orks. Tons of other subfactions.
    Battlefleet Gothic: everything except Tau.
    AOS: at least 10 armies.
    etc.
    I would get into 40k Tyranids/Harlequins/Necrons.
    Old world Tomb Kings/Bretonia/Vampires.
    AOS: Death faction => everything + Sylvaneth.
    Tons of scenery, including 3d printing some fiting buildings.
    EDIT: and 2 rules:
    1. no new army before 50% of the previous one is painted.
    2. No army without their own personal carry case.

    Some really good advice here, but unfortunately I'm way too deep to contemplate taking any of it 😂

  • @koz1138
    @koz1138 19 дней назад +1

    No more points in KT. Now you build your team from a roster of options, like the current Tau list is 1) take a leader unit (a Shas’ui), 2) pick 11 other models from a list of 15 (drones, sniper, medic, etc etc). And the “x of y” models varies in numbers for each faction. You also select equipment (buffs basically) from a list for your faction and a generic list available to everybody. It’s a good system. You can build the team you want (to a point) but you can’t get lost in the weeds.

    • @the_kieran_show
      @the_kieran_show  19 дней назад

      Ah okay. So it's limited to a specific unit, like Pathfinders for example? No additional single models from exterior units

    • @koz1138
      @koz1138 12 дней назад

      @@the_kieran_show Sort of, it depends on the team. Like the Tau list are just different variations of pathfinders with specific kit/loadout. But the AdMech team is a mix of rangers, vanguard, ruststalkers, etc. The new KT app has all the team lists in it, and as a bonus team rosters will always be free.

    i went crazy when i first started and got 3 armies at once (Dark angels, Alpha legion, Imperial guard). It took me so long to get a single army of 2000 pts painted since i kept jumping from army to army in a painting frenzy. Eventually after a few months i got really burnt out and stopped painting regularly. The only thing that got me to play my first game was when my local Warhammer store asked me if i wanted to play a 2000pt game with someone they couldn't find an opponent for (My local Warhammer store does 40k tinder as they like to call it). This forced me to finish painting my dark angels. If i could start again i would have just done 1 army and started another only when the first was completed.

    I've been in this hobby since 7th edition Fantasy and the only worthy advice I've heard is just buy the models you like.. Even if it isn't the same faction, this hobby is a marathon and about the journey not the destination.
    I also think the game and hobby is oversold on getting 2000 points asap, tournament top table results and competitive battles, the majority of this game was founded and played on the kitchen table with friends navigating around coffee mugs, coasters and cardboard.

Another thing would be to research and plan the paints I would need instead of just going to the store and ad-hoc buy citadel paints I didn't end up needing. Also I should have jumped ship from Citadel Contrast to Army Painter when Speedpaint 2.0 was released.

Then i would start again with OPR skirmish ruleset and buy the models that i like, from any company/creator...just a handfull. The ruleset and its army builder app is free and fun. I would still use the warhammer background of my choice for the narritive of my games.

    Just sold all my Warhammer (several grands worth). I’m just playing Legions Imperialis (8mm 30k) and Warmaster (10mm fantasy) to scratch that itch. I still enjoy historical games too. I’ve been playing since 1st edition Warhammer Fantasy Battles. The final straw was them dumping Beasts of Chaos from AoS and being advised to re-base it all and buy another of their games to use it all in (The Old World). Previous to this they’ve killed squats and all the old marines for 40k as armies… continuous rules changes, imbalanced rules and army lists, rules churn encouraging everyone to meta chase. I’m through.

    Me, personally? So far, not a damn thing tbh. I've been into the books since I was a kid, love Dawn of War and DoW2 as well - but I just started the hobby itself last year. Already owned an airbrush from other projects, and I chose to go with Imperial Knights, which despite being such a fucked way to learn the game, I still love them to death and I've since gotten over 3k points of them built and painted. I also got into 3d printing after only about 5 or 6 months from when I started, so I can actually afford to play and my deathwatch kitbashes and proxies are sick - my favorite thing to do at the moment is to make deathwatch alternatives to chapter specific characters/units- Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard, for instance, being 6 guys in fancy fucking inquisition armor with alien jetpacks and such

    • @khanayudash2475
      @khanayudash2475 18 дней назад

      For context, I bought my first kit, a used Knight Questoris Errant off Facebook marketplace last June, stripped it, had to fix some build mistakes the last guy made, and repainted it to learn how to paint minis. That knight is technically my 2nd warhammer model, but the loyalist space marine I got as a freebie from the warhammer shop and painted as a plague marine over a decade ago doesn't super count, since I didn't actually get into the hobby at that point and I had a TON of help doing it.

    I got into WH with weeks of research. I understood if I were to do this it would be my last hobby.

    My first Warhammer game was adeptus Titanicus back in 88, then Dark Future, they were awesome games, if I was starting out now, my recommendation would be to pick space marines, as they will always be supported with new models or sculpts, and competitive to play, make your own chapter, so you can use different chapter rules to keep it interesting/competitive. ..
    I picked Eldar/Dark Eldar as my main armys, GW can never balance Eldar, your either so broken overpowered nobody wants to play you, or so overpointed and underpowered you loose 100s of games in a row, and they are barely supported with model releases, I'm still using some models from 2nd edition like Warp spiders 😂.

      Yeah its really a rollercoaster for Eldar players! Both good and bad, Drukhari were crazy good when their book dropped in 9th!

    If I could start over, I would not sell any of my armies, but rather complete them...

    Discount boxes aren’t worth the burnout, one kit at a time is the best advice to new people (I cry from atop a mountain of sprues)

    Definitely don't do as I do, but if you do do it as I do completely... I got 20k points in 2 years when I came back to the hobby and 3 tables worth of terrain... I set myself a goal of finishing that within 5 years... 2 years in 8000 points and 2 tables painted... if you want a big pile of shame to not be depressing you better bring a ton of discipline... and Audible. Audible is your best friend.
    But if you want to stay sane, do it as Kierans recommdend it. Just skip buying Primaris Space Marines. You will be bored and disappointed in the long run.
