Gerald, I've never been this early to a video but I just wanted to say I really appreciate the work that you do and you've helped me as a creator more than almost anyone else. As someone on a very thin budget you're videos have been the ultimate resource on what to get at what budget. Then we have all the amazing tutorials you produce. Gerald, thank you for doing you and wherever your channel goes I'll be watching
Real good move from Sigma and Gerald. He gave early feedback and sigma is fine to let him talk. I think the next version of this camera will be better if they keep listen.
Any person in the right mind would prefer letting the bad news out than silencing the bad news and getting caught for silencing the bad news and having the bad news get out eventually
Yup. I havent used much Sigma glass but did like what I used. Them still pushing for a GU review even after his warning is a solid move, good on them. I've always been very interested by the FP form factor, but this is just nonsense.
Sigma deserves respect for knowing that they would get a bad review and still encouraging it to be published. You don't see that from companies. It seems like they are really dedicated to receiving feedback and using it to create a better product. Their lenses are fantastic, and although they might be in the baby stages of camera production, with a dedication to receiving feedback, in a few years we might be talking about sigma cameras in the same light as we do sigma lenses.
This camera is such a huge disappointment. I just don’t understand why they were thinking. They’ve improved nothing from the original and made certain things worse. They should have just brought out the EVF and left it at that!
I personally just don't get what is this camera about. It looks like a very early prototype of an overpumped GoPro. It looks like they try to make something new but have no cue what exactly. It's a pity, can't get what they are doing..
I don't understand at all what is Sigma doing with this camera. I've never seing an update of a camera that basically did'nt update anything. Same camera, more pixel for photo, worst response in lowlight... And still cinema dng 🤦♀️I really like Sigma as company but is like them didn't hear the community
Seems like they were just excited to get their hands on the a7Riv sensor, but had no good plans for what to do with it, so it just ended up shoehorned into the old body. Shame.
sigma executives: "so, we wanna get out our own camera." engineers: "but we dont have have the technology or the budget to properly compete with any other brand in this segment?" executives: "yes."
at least the regular sigma fp is actually really good for the price. shame no log or 10 bit mov but you do get internal raw 12 bit as well as the ability to record to an ssd by usb c without an external recorder which is something i wish all cameras had.
@@kevinforget549 well theres something called the bmpcc 6k/6k Pro. Might be the better option here for the price. line skipping is horrible on the sigma, isnt it?
I don't want to make it dark. But I heard the director of Sigma say that he does this in honor of father, his dream was to expand Sigma into a camera company.
@@philippscheithauer BMPCC 6k is more expensive than Sigma fp and not that good in low light. I personally shot on both cameras. I would say Sigma's Cinema DNG files are the way better than BRAW and the body design and build quality is also better, but BMPCC has more cine feature what is true. Plus to it fp is a full frame camera with better lens choice than EF-mount on BMPCC 6k
i’m super stoked and honored that you picked my intro! how appropriate this is thee video i get a mention in. so much to complain about with this body. i remember commenting back around 30K subscribers that you were going to have 1 million. i’m pleased to see you’re at a quarter milli! one of the most important and respected reviewer (extraordinaire) in the space.
I haven’t watched your review yet but I’m so pumped about this camera I pre-ordered 4 of them! Now to take a big sip of coffee and start watching your comprehensive review!
Objectively, I hear your concerns when comparing specs and workflow. And your insight that this camera is optimally used for CDNG capture to SSD is very helpful. But if you want a minimalist camera that takes beautiful images, with the smallest possible form factor, combined with modularity to rig it out when you need that, then this is it... so I don't think we should knock a screwdriver for being a bad hammer. Sigma's business success has not been founded on building a whole camera brand eco-system, but rather on fitting its products into wider eco-systems and focusing on how Sigma can add innovation or offer value. COULD Sigma make a camera just like a Sony or Fujifilm? I would think they can, but why would they do that? This camera cleverly sneaks into a sweet spot for certain use cases and personal preferences. BTW, I don't work for them nor do I know anyone who does... I just appreciate what they do, respect their integrity and values (as you acknowledged) and I own three of their lovely lenses. So there are two possibilities, it seems to me. One: you are right, and Sigma made a strategic mistake building the wrong camera with ther wrong specs. Two: your critique will be 'undone' by the simple fact that Sigma have found a niche that they can uniquely fill... it's no coincidence in my view that Sony launched the FX3, a camera which also 'objectively' does nothing better than other Sony cameras... other than its form factor. Moreover, I think you could argue that Sigma are being smart: the fp series is a smaller alternative to the 'box camera' form factor that is doing well at the moment, and the fp also take stills but has no recording time limit. With that EVF, there is nothing like it on the market. The footage I've seen so far from the camera looks stunning, and they seem to be aiming the camera at users who want great colour straight out of the camera rather than spending a lot of time in post. I'll be waiting to see how the firmware upgrades improve things, but I remain interested in this camera for a CDNG workflow (with SSD) and baked-in looks in non-raw format, recorded in-camera. CineD have an article up on the Sigma fp L that's also an interesting read: they asked the product manager for the fp series, Wakamatsu-san, about the optimal settings for this camera. As you found, this is a bit complicated... but the simple insight is that this camera's performance is tied to the crop factor that you use. To quote: "For now, please see below the recommended crop factor for EACH scenario: - for the best resolution: x1.3 to x2.48 - for phase detection AF: x1.0 to x1.53 - for best dynamic range: x1.24" Which of course begs another question: is this REALLY a full-frame camera, or a defacto APS-H/C camera? Now I'm starting to feel a little 'undone'... You've got to feel sympathy for the camera manufacturers' marketing and engineering teams these days. How on earth do you market a camera when every camera is SO capable? In some of the rumours about the fp L they were saying this might be an APS-C sensor... which it kind of IS... but everyone seems to want to buy a FF camera at the moment... I suspect the success of this camera will be ultimately based on how well Sigma (and influencers like you) manage to explain to the marketplace the "who and what this camera is for." I'm really keen to learn more about how Sigma is using that sensor: I read somewhere they have used this sensor to re-create the look from a Foveon sensor... it'll be interesting to see some comparisons of this camera's footage with the original fp and with other cameras. And to hear more about people's experience with the workflow in post...
Well said i love my fpl it would never be my only camera but it certainly has a place, they might make quirky cameras but they have exceptional image quality which seems to go under the radar
I think the intent of this camera is to be a small and modular cinema camera. Basically a guerilla filmmaking tool: incognito in the public space but with the capability to be kitted out in a studio environment. There is definitely a demand for such a camera. I would buy it in an instant if the image quality wasn't so disappointing :(
I seriously think that camera manufacturers need to hire you as a consultant in the early stages of your camera development. The time and money saved would be substantial. Just my two cents. Great video Gerald!! Cheers 💜
I thought the same thing, but they just prefered to get the consulting for free in exchange to risking their image on social media. I'm pretty sure they already knew this camera sucks just because they know all previous cameras also suck, however they probably need some major company rebuilt in the camera department and needed such harsh reviews to expose this to the people who makes the decisions, or at least this is the only reason I can think of for them to stop trying to make cameras that don't sale.
I can imagine the sigma marketing team quickly setting this video to seventy five percent playback speed before the president and company CEO come into the office to view it.
@@azfilmmaking6734 Sony colour science has been very neutral in the recent generations. The old myth is long gone, back from the original A7 or gen 2 models.
@@azfilmmaking6734 I've shot on Sony, Canon, and Fuji so far. Canon is the worst for me cos it's too oversaturated. Sony new (a6600, a7iii) generations are fine, but the older ones like A7Sii is totally horrible, an iPhone has better colours. Fuji is nice, I guess? But not like omg gamechanger. For quick delivery I would still use Fuji Eterna and Sony HLG cos those are easy to grade. Canon maybe not. Unless it's a food project where I need to oversaturate the colours.
Hello, I am French and have a Sigma FP, so I was interested in the test, thank you! It is true that the price is undoubtedly too high. However, I allow myself to bring another vision to the product. For my part I had bought the fp for its small size and light weight while having the possibilities of a full frame. I am not disappointed, I can take it often with me without it being in the way and the rendering of the images is very satisfactory, but I only do photos. So the fact that there are 61 million pixels and some improvements over fp will still make me think!
@@jannieschluter9670 I have got the fpL since november 2021, i'm very happy with it, only photos. I think he is a little better than the fp with the pixels and AF perhaps a little more better, but fp is still very good for photos ! It all depends on the use you make of your camera, being understood that none is perfect, you must choose according to your own needs. For me, it is clearly the weight and the size that are my number 1 criteria for a full frame camera, ahead of everything else.
I really like Sigma for doing something different. And after watching Steve Huff's review and seeing his samples I am really impressed with the colors and skin tones from the stills. As a still camera for working a bit slower I think this would be amazing, just the size with the new lenses makes it an incredible tool that you easily would bring on every walk.
This camera is not confusing at all for me. I need a tiny hi res camera for hiking and landscapes. This is the perfect camera. Let me also add that Sigma has a different processor than Sony and the colours are vastly nicer than the R4 IMO.
The average population in the US is getting older and those citizens tend to be way more active compared to the previous generation. Many are retired professionals who still travel - their only handicap is "weight". This gem of a small camera with all the bells and whistles of a 60 MG file and an EVF could prove to become a hit among that market segment. Compared to Sony - there is a noticeable weight difference. Put a "pancake lens" on it and you are in business.
For a photographer like myself this camera is great! I use it for years now. You completly judged it for video. I even don't use my Fuji 100s anymore. It has the good colors, it has the big amount of pixels for big prints, it is is light and easy to use and I love the design. I bought a very good matching grip for it from niceyrig. I must say i don't photgraph many fast moving subjects and don, t use it for video. I use it with the external viewfinder which is a hassle sometimes because it unscrews itself. you have to watch out for that. I bought it second hand for 2000,-- euros with the 45 mm and the 24/2 Sigma lenses and I am happy. Lately I use it on my travels with the 2 slow Lumix zoom lenses, the 14-28 and the new 28-200. Perfect for me. I wanted to add something more positive about this camera from a real user.
It was disappointing that its price point prevented a review of its photo capabilities. Gerald, you usually do very good full reviews, and I was surprised that you glossed over the photo aspects of this camera in about 30 seconds. After watching the video I have no idea how it performs as a photo camera, just that I could buy something else for a similar price. My understanding was that Sigma focused on video with the first FP and this one was supposed to be focused more on stills photography. What about when the price drops? This review leaves me in the dark. For my shooting, mostly landscapes and architecture, this is a very enticing camera, as long as they also make some lightweight high quality zoom lenses to go with it (otherwise it's a bit pointless to put a huge lens on it). A "flippy screen" (shout out to Casey at Camera Conspiracies) would have been nice though for low angle shooting.
100% accurate. The only thing I’d add is that with a program called SlimRaw you can achieve BRaw comparable file sizes with truly lossless CDNG image fidelity.
@@philipbloom we’ve been thru this debate before, on facebook i believe :) my pov is that the SlimRaw ingest process is literally indistinguishable from copying in every way, including time. Other than the limit on camera SSD the workflow is frictionless.
Just wanted to reinforce what Gerald said himself. Lots of respect for Sigma for being ok with the video going live. It really shows the company is more worried about getting market feedback and what consumers would like than to hide it. I can only believe their intent is to grab all info from this launch and make a hell of a camera on the next.
Wish they made a less then $1000 camera instead so LUMIX and Leica users could have it as a secondary camera and with the small size it would be perfect to just sit in your bag at all times.
@@geoffreybassett6741 not at all, can get much more from other companies with way more lens options. So its a very bad buy, and the autofocus is crap too. I would only buy micro 4/3 from panasonic they should cancel full frame and dedicate fully to m 4/3 or sell their camera business off.
@@geoffreybassett6741 I agree. It gives you an FX9 quality image at $1500. The FX6 definitely is good competition to it but its quite a bit more expensive. The A7S3 is cool, but the noise reduction and sharpening really take away from the image. I've owned like 5-6 cameras in the last year and the S1 just takes the cake for me.
Whoa! This was hard to watch! The video is great as always ofcourse. I just feel a little bit bad for sigma for producing something so wierd and out of place. Maybe they were looking to do 8k with this some day? I don't know. I applaud your honesty though, Gerald! You're the man! 👍
So the CinemaDNG image is indistinguishable from downsampled 9.5K and completely uncompressed? Sounds like the image quality does justify it to me. I don't know why the bitrate is a complaint. Bigger the better in my opinion. If it's 3-5x the size of most highest quality internal raw, but shoots on media that's 10x cheaper per GB that's not really a problem. You can get nearly 2 hours on a drive, and that's plenty for most projects. Comparing it to the BMPC6K the resolution should be on par when you finish in 4K. It is much smaller, better built, weather sealed, better battery life, better low light, better reliability (from my experience with Blackmagic cameras), better autofocus implementation, better lens compatibility, both rated at 13 stops of dynamic range, same fixed screen, same absence of built in evf, same absence of IBIS, both not that great rolling shutter, both ideally would be rigged appropriately for the occasion. Sure the Blackmagic has some features the fp L doesn't but the same can be said for the fp L, namely a mostly complete photography side. I didn't hear too many "I'm so confused" videos or "this is unusable garbage" comments when the BMPC6K came out. I'd pay a $500 premium to have full frame, less than quarter the size, and 61MP stills ability. There are so many sacrifices of convenience you must do to use a Blackmagic the way you use a "normal" camera, but that's the type of camera it is. It's the same for the fp L. It's no use comparing it at $3,000 (especially to USED camera prices) when the camera is only $2,500. The EVF is separate. It's like saying the Sony a7r IV actually costs $3,900 because it has an official battery grip that you have to buy. I most likely wouldn't buy the EVF, but it's nice to have it if you want it later. A small form factor PC will always cost more than a full size desktop if you want to match the performance. That's just how it works. They made a camera that is intentionally different and minimal compared to others, and does many things other can't. Wouldn't make sense for a small company to try and make a camera that was the same as others. In a controlled environment, or as a B-cam/secondary travel cam (which is why I want it) it makes plenty of sense. If you are willing to take your time with it, I think it's a fantastic camera.
I know this is now an old comment and video but I agree. I love Gerald's reviews but i feel this is alittle harsh. The rear optical effect thing is much cheaper and can be used in photo and video, plus other reviews show the sigma to have much more accurate colour then the s1h handling under exposure very well. The second hand price is already quite cheap and while the rolling shutter is very disappointing it won't really effect alot of fashion or portait photography. I've notnchecked the graphs but is it even that much worse then the 6k? I'm still on the fence about buying one but im not sure this review has put me off. Cdng raw 4k for 1800.... plus high quality portait and promo pictures....seems pretty good? Maybe sigma will out another fp that's pure video.
Kudos to Sigma for being honest about their products. Not many companies are that transparent. A real breath of fresh air. I've been using their lenses since the mid-1980s when their lenses were mediocre at best, but now, is probably one of my first go to Third Party lens provider.
I would love to get your thoughts on the original FP as it stands today with all the newest firmware updates compared to how it was at launch and see if you think it has proven itself in todays marketplace. Love the videos!
I can appreciate your style with this review. You were extremely thorough as always, didn't seem to write it off completely, offered Sigma some great feedback. I hope they listen. Personally I like the look of it but it seems extremely underdone ;)
Thank you Gerald. Seriously. A truthful review is what we need. I know a lot of others will just not make a review so they don't upset the companies, but I really appreciate the honesty.
Gerald, a quick compliment on the way you speak in front of the camera. I nearly see no cuts even though it's some very technical stuff you say. I find myself cutting way more in my videos lol. Thanks for the quality content, again!
It's a cinema camera. It will crush the Sony in video quality so not sure what this guy is even getting at. The video quality is just as good as the Blackmagic 4k/6k and the stills are amazing with it's foveon-ish colors. Basically best of both worlds. The camera does have it's issues though but I feel people are being overly critical.
What bit depth do you shot for video at 4:06? Both Cined and Dpreview showed that full frame 4k recording is not supersampled and the resolution is bad. I think you are shooing under 8bit, so the cpu in fp l is capable for doing supersampling.
SIGMA gear in the US is really extremely expensive, don't know why though. I noticed that several times. In Germany the story is different (all prices in germany include Taxes btw, the $ prices in general don't contain taxes so please keep that in mind). The a7R IV is 4000€ here and the fp L with EVF is 2800€. Thats a _big_ difference. You say the camera still does only 8bit interally (you mean SD Card, but an USB-C SSD is considered internal storage too. An HDMI Recorder is considered external). The SIGMA could do more, but 4K 30fps 8bit is already 1670mbit/s. 40K 30fps 12bit would be 2980mbit/s and there is no SD card on this planet that is fast enought to write that speed at a constant rate in CinemaDNG Format. You can't blame SIGMA for the lack of speed in SD Cards, they don't produce them. That is a bit unfair. Not to mention that 4K 30fps 12bit are, as mentioned, 2980mbit/s, that means 372,5mbyte/s. An 256GB SD Card would be filled to 100% in 10 Minutes. How silly is that. Even with the available 8bit that the fp offers, an 256GB is filled to 100% in roughly 19 Minutes. It makes no sense whatsoever to write that huge amount of data to an SD-Card, that is the reason the SIGMA recommends the use of USB-C SDDs. Then you say that the camera still can't do 4K 60fps. 4K 60fps in RAW would be ~5960mbit/s aka 745mbyte/s. With what storage medium do you want to record 745mbyte/s at a constant rate? Tell me one SSD that is fast enough to write at that speed. An 1 hour video would be 2,6TB of data. Do you really want to handle that insane amount of data? I don't think so. Do you have an High Performance Computing Cluster in your basement to develop that data? And yes, there is no 8K support but lets take a breath and compare the Video Features of the SIGMA fp to the Sony a1 Sony a1's 8K is only 400mbit/s. SIGMAs 4K is 2980mbit/s. So SIGMAs 4K footage contains 7,5x more data than Sonys 8K footage. Sounds strange, dont you think? 3-Times the resolution but only 13% of the data? Either Sony broke the law of physics (trust me, they didn't), or those two values are just so far from each other, that something must be off. And now comes something important to consider. You get more resolution, but less dynamic, less color, less details and so on. The 8K footage from the a1 is worse than the 4K footage from the fp, its just bigger. Its the bigger image, but the bigger image contains less data. When you fill 390ml of water in a 3L bottle, you do not have more than when you fill 1L of water in a 1L bottle. Just because the bottle is bigger, doesn't mean that there is more water inside. Did you ever buy a bag of chips? A bag of Lays chip is like Sonys 8K. You think "Wow, thats big" but then you open the bag and notice "Oh dammit, i got scammed". Sonys 4K 120fps is at 200mbit/s, that is only 2% of the data (per frame) that SIGMAs 4K 30fps RAW contains, but at the 4times bit-rate. Do you really think that Sony is that awesome that they can reduce the filesize by 98% without any loss of quality? If you go deep inside of yourself and think about that, you know its wrong. Those are two completely different things that just can't be compared. The SIGMA is meant to be recorded in RAW and SIGMA makes that clear! And that is why it doesn't support 4K 60fps, because it is impossible to record 12bit 4K 60fps 4:4:4 with the USB-C storage solutions (or over HDMI) that are availalable on the market right now. Maybe its just my opinion, but i shoot RAW, stills and Video, because quality matters. That is something that _you_ have to decide. Are you a RAW guy or do you shoot JPEG and compressed Video? If Sonys 8K contains only 13% of the data that SIGMAs 4K contains, does that count, or not? Is that a fair comparison that makes sense, or not? I recently had a similar discussion with a guy trying to tell me that SIGMA only does have 12EV and Sony does have more than 15EV of dynamic and that is why the fp is shit. Obviously those people don't know that the 15EV of dynamic is limited to stills. Those people dont know that Sonys XAVC HS Codec only supports 10EV and the XAVC S Codec only supports 8EV. Do they know that the 8K RAW that comes out from Sonys a1 HDMI is limited to 8EV of dynamic and 4:2:0 colors? I have the feeling most people really don't know that because they think RAW is RAW. Neither the Canon EOS R5 nor the Sony A7S III or A1 or any other camera on the Market can produce more than 10bit 4:4:4 4K 30fps RAW. Non of them! Official information from Canon for the EOS 5R: 4K at 30fps: 2600mbit/s 4K at 120fps: 1880mbit/s Canons 4K@120fps is 16mbit/frame and Canons 4K@30fps is 87mbit/frame. Makes you think, huh? Official information from Canon: To get the best Movie Image Quality from the EOS 5R, you need to shoot at 4K@30fps in CRM Format which is 2600mbit/s (but only 10EV of dynamic) The SIGMA fp is, with 12EV of dynamic in 4K@30fps RAW at 2980mbit/s the leader in terms of image quality. If you wan't the best Image Quality for Movie Recording, there is no way around the SIGMA fp, its simple as that. Nothing to argue and so it doesn't matter if other cameras can do 120fps in 4K if the image quality is worse than the 120fps from SIGMAs FullHD. I rather shoot in FullHD with good image quality than in 4K that looks mushy.
Gerald, I love your channel, and I think this is the first negative review i've seen from you. That's not a critique. I definitely appreciated the care and sensitivity you showed in this review. Please keep up the great work.
Proud owner of the original FP here, and as soon as I saw the 61MP I knew that this would be a confusing camera. Part of me is glad to not be tempted though, I'm having a blast with the OG version. I pair it with my BMPCC4K and it can really punch above its weight class once you understand how it handles. I will say that with the original FP, a lot of similar reviews were made before the first firmware, which totally changed the trajectory of that camera. Perhaps Sigma is eyeing 8K capture or something with a future patch. Thanks for this review as always Gerald!
Brilliant review as always Gerald! Absolutely agree a 10 bit internal log could save it, but as it stands it's just not a camera that makes any sense. 3 years ago if you'd told me the specs I might have thought "holy moly 12-bit cDNG 4K output on a camera that size?!" but it just doesn't even come close to the cheaper competition out there today.
This review is brutal and I love it. Thank you for your in-depth research and honest opinion. It can be tough to find unbiased reviewers online, but you are always an exception. Keep up the great work!
Finally, all day I've been looking for one of my trusted sources to do a review of this, and go into these kinds of details. No one talked about the lack of log or how to deal with it or if line skipping occurred and how bad it was. This has raised more questions though. Like If you were able to get almost 13 stops of dynamic range out of this using Braw and a, "proper locker" then is it possible to get a similar dynamic range out of the original Sigma fp using braw and the same technique? I ask because no one has done a thorough test of the original since it got it's braw upgrade, and if it could produce a less line skipped image it might be a better option at around $1700. As a side note the original also is compatible with the new viewfinder which is sold separately, which would offer a $2400 full frame 4k super sampled CinemaDNG 10ish-13ish stop camera with an EVF, and while the raw footage would chew through hard drives it could be SlimRAWed after capture giving one 4k CinemaDNG sequences with up to 12:1 compression. The only big question is can one obtain closer to the 13 stop mark some how. This is also making me think Sigma could come out with a "fp C" that is a 10-12 megapixel non line skipped full frame fp style camera that wouldn't have to line skip for the external recorders. With all these features and a true log mode for say $1000-$1500 they would be walking in original BM pocket cinema cameras footsteps, and I guarantee despite recording uncompressed CinemaDNG sequences internally, it would sell like hotcakes.
Fair Play Gerald! It was clearly tough for you to be so brutal with your review, but it was technically truthful, enlightening and unbiased. And that’s exactly why we all love your shizzle!
I think this video speaks volumes for Gerald as a creator/reviewer/camera pro. The reviews are always very high detailed, but this was beyond belief. Maybe it's because I go in, knowing I'd never buy this camera or maybe it's because he isn't recommending it, but I just feel this video was levels above any other review I have seen on any other product in a LONG time!
Honest review. Sigma makes great lenses. I got the Sigma 16mm 1.4 MFT after watching your review. Hope they redesign the camera or explain its potential as is.
Clear concise and to the point. Camera creators should have their act together before sending it to Gerald. Geralds surname is so appropriate in this review. Well "Done" great respect!
Any chance I could get a download link to a CINEMADNG still of the Xyla 21 chart from either your Sigma FP or Sigma FP-L testing? I’m hoping to experiment with the file a little bit.
I don’t know why they didn’t make the fp-L a micro-cine camera. It could have been an extremely competitive Full Frame alternative to the BMPCC 4K/6K/6Kpro. It’s a master of none trying to be two things at once. Either make a photo camera or a cine camera.
FINALLY! Someone who's actually speaking the truth! My review got such a kicking because I don't rate this camera for the reasons you've highlighted. Thanks for the incredibly detailed and well explained review Gerald 🤜🤛

Real good move from Sigma and Gerald. He gave early feedback and sigma is fine to let him talk. I think the next version of this camera will be better if they keep listen.
totally agree, I still love sigma though

"I'm Gerald Undone, and my favorite flavor of ice cream is S-Log."

Seems like they were just excited to get their hands on the a7Riv sensor, but had no good plans for what to do with it, so it just ended up shoehorned into the old body. Shame.
Gotta say Gerald, I appreciate you not rushing the embargo so that you can stay true to your opinions. I appreciate the honesty!

@@kevinforget549 well theres something called the bmpcc 6k/6k Pro. Might be the better option here for the price. line skipping is horrible on the sigma, isnt it?

Plus to it fp is a full frame camera with better lens choice than EF-mount on BMPCC 6k

in China we call this type of joke “暴Bao 露lu 年nian 龄ling”, “a joke that shows age” hahaha
why are you not on top ?
To quote: "For now, please see below the recommended crop factor for EACH scenario:
- for the best resolution: x1.3 to x2.48
- for phase detection AF: x1.0 to x1.53
- for best dynamic range: x1.24"
Which of course begs another question: is this REALLY a full-frame camera, or a defacto APS-H/C camera? Now I'm starting to feel a little 'undone'...
You've got to feel sympathy for the camera manufacturers' marketing and engineering teams these days. How on earth do you market a camera when every camera is SO capable? In some of the rumours about the fp L they were saying this might be an APS-C sensor... which it kind of IS... but everyone seems to want to buy a FF camera at the moment... I suspect the success of this camera will be ultimately based on how well Sigma (and influencers like you) manage to explain to the marketplace the "who and what this camera is for."
I'm really keen to learn more about how Sigma is using that sensor: I read somewhere they have used this sensor to re-create the look from a Foveon sensor... it'll be interesting to see some comparisons of this camera's footage with the original fp and with other cameras. And to hear more about people's experience with the workflow in post...
Well said i love my fpl it would never be my only camera but it certainly has a place, they might make quirky cameras but they have exceptional image quality which seems to go under the radar

Maybe it's for someone who only takes high-res photos in manual focus only, and insists on the lightest weight equipment.
I think the intent of this camera is to be a small and modular cinema camera. I seriously think that camera manufacturers need to hire you as a consultant in the early stages of your camera development. The time and money saved would be substantial. Just my two cents. Great video Gerald!! Cheers 💜
Yup
I thought the same thing, but they just prefered to get the consulting for free in exchange to risking their image on social media. I'm pretty sure they already knew this camera sucks just because they know all previous cameras also suck, however they probably need some major company rebuilt in the camera department and needed such harsh reviews to expose this to the people who makes the decisions, or at least this is the only reason I can think of for them to stop trying to make cameras that don't sale.

FpL is maybe better for photo and fp more for video.
The detailed nature of this roast is phenomenal. I repeat, phenomenal.

Sigma: Who in hell gave this guy our camera to review!?
Sigma: ...
My fp L and Sigma primes is my favourite camera of all time
It was disappointing that its price point prevented a review of its photo capabilities.
Yes that’s true BUT you have to record in cinema dng first and then process it. Not exactly great.

I just feel a little bit bad for sigma for producing something so wierd and out of place. Maybe they were looking to do 8k with this some day? I don't know. I applaud your honesty though, Gerald! You're the man! 👍
Would love to see you revisit this camera after all the updates. Thanks for the video 🙂

Gerald. I think you’re one of the best in technical reviews. Straight forward as well.
This reminds me of my first video project that was shown in front of the class and critiqued. I got torn a new one.
And yes, there is no 8K support but lets take a breath and compare the Video Features of the SIGMA fp to the Sony a1
Sony a1's 8K is only 400mbit/s.
Official information from Canon for the EOS 5R:
4K at 30fps: 2600mbit/s
4K at 120fps: 1880mbit/s
Canons 4K@120fps is 16mbit/frame and Canons 4K@30fps is 87mbit/frame. Makes you think, huh?
Official information from Canon: To get the best Movie Image Quality from the EOS 5R, you need to shoot at 4K@30fps in CRM Format which is 2600mbit/s (but only 10EV of dynamic)
The SIGMA fp is, with 12EV of dynamic in 4K@30fps RAW at 2980mbit/s the leader in terms of image quality.

Thanks for the honesty and how you get straight down to business!
Gerald, thanks for the review and sharing your honest opinion. Only a few youtuber now a days as brave as you. Hats off to you :)
Such a great title! Great review too!
Fair Play Gerald! It was clearly tough for you to be so brutal with your review, but it was technically truthful, enlightening and unbiased. And that’s exactly why we all love your shizzle!
Hi Gerald. Nice to hear some honest thoughts in a review. Your videos are just the best.
Curious with all the updates. Has any of your opinions changed like ProRes raw on image etc.
Great job Gerald. Honest review as always. And props to Sigma for allowing you to post this video eventho they knew it'll bomb.
Honest review. Sigma makes great lenses. I got the Sigma 16mm 1.4 MFT after watching your review. Hope they redesign the camera or explain its potential as is.
Do you know by any chance if they use a Foveon sensor or a Bayer one?
Pick this one or the old fp?
Such a great and informative review as always Gerald! Always watching your videos at least three times until my brain can finally follow your words😁
This camera is gonna be legendary
Very honest review thank You Gerald.
Isn't there a full HDMI on the EVF ?
The great information and honesty is why I am subscribed to this channel.
Merci Beaucoup Gérald, for reviewing this awesome camera.
Other than that how did you like the camera?
Clear concise and to the point. Camera creators should have their act together before sending it to Gerald. Geralds surname is so appropriate in this review. Well "Done" great respect!
Any chance I could get a download link to a CINEMADNG still of the Xyla 21 chart from either your Sigma FP or Sigma FP-L testing? I’m hoping to experiment with the file a little bit.
Does it have a full sensor/open gate mode?
I don’t know why they didn’t make the fp-L a micro-cine camera. It could have been an extremely competitive Full Frame alternative to the BMPCC 4K/6K/6Kpro.
It’s a master of none trying to be two things at once. Either make a photo camera or a cine camera.
So.... at the end Gerald only recomend to drop the price on the fp L and only shoot on CDNG Raw?
FINALLY! Someone who's actually speaking the truth! My review got such a kicking because I don't rate this camera for the reasons you've highlighted. Thanks for the incredibly detailed and well explained review Gerald 🤜🤛
As a Sigma user much appreciated very honest review.
