Brought my regular fp on a trip to Hawaii for stills. The size and weight, when coupled with a reasonable lens, are just insane for such a diminutive camera with a FF sensor. I really hope they continue the line when global shutters are more accessible.

The #1 reason I'm looking at the Sigma FP L is to use it with that Sirui Saturn 35mm 1.6x anamorphic lens, when when center cropped on the FP/FP L turns into 87mm. This allows you to use one lens to film almost everything because the downside of this lens turns into a home run. Sure the Saturn is clinically sharp and doesn't have chromatic aberrations that move your eye to the center like the Blazar Remus, but it's too hard to add VFX with those kinds of lenses so the Saturn is actually better for virtual production.
Yamaki has said that this fp L + i35 is his travel kit. It uses the same battery as the old Leica Q (and GX8 etc) and a similar sensor to the new one. I've always wanted this, but prioritised an all-rounder first, and now it's difficult to find at a reasonable price.
I like Sigma cameras and their quirks (I have DPs, Quattros and the SD), but I'd agree, in this case I don't know why you'd buy one of these over the A7RIV.
I heard a similar thought in the video, (11:03), but thats not a cost friendly proposition for many, as Sony (E/FE mount) and Sigma (L-mount) are two different lens mount systems. If I already have L mount lenses I’m suppose to ditch all that for a Sony where I’d have to rebuy all these lenses? Thats expensive. Versus those already on L-mount can get more milage out of their existing lens investment by using them on the Sigma as well.
It doesn't come with a charger. You only get a USB-C cable in the box. This was a loan camera, but if I owned it myself then I would do as you suggested and get an external charger for it.
@@TomCalton I would too for sure. When listening to the video I doubted for a second and thought it was a non-removable internal battery. That would have been the worst
Indeed, is like some reviewers would be in 2010 or so when raw was mandatory. Now every camera has enough quality that sooc jpegs are better indicator if the color science of certain brand is akin to what one desires without need of editing. I like Canon and Fujifilm, although perfectly professional I feel uninteresting Nikon and Sony.
I'm a film shooter but sometimes think it would be nice to have a FF digital to use with my vintage Nikkor glass. Thought this might be the one but lack of proper viewfinder options is a dealbreaker and I don't really want to pay for the incredible video capabilities which I would never use.
I have the Sigma FP and a S5IIX. The FP is more cinema focused over the FP L. I love this camera and the color science, IQ, and the over the top amazing quality using the FP (quirks and all). The FP also has El ZONE and False color for setting exposure. Shooting raw video I set the color mode to off. Shooting DNG RAW you don't need LOG. The S5IIX has everything missing from the FP. There is a S5IIX update (4-22) that makes the IBIS and auto focus even better. Absolutely amazing now.
I have 2 Sigma cameras but don't use them anymore, using a Fujifilm X10 now. I liked the size and colours of the Sigmas, but the low battery life, slowness and fixed lens made me look for a new experience.
I was fully on the FP bandwagon for years with the original (non 61MP version). Haven’t found a camera even today that can do what the FP can at its size and price (4K CDNG RAW VIDEO is crazy). Ultimately sold it for my A7IV. Great video!
@@jessehavok4181 I feel like most cameras in today's day and age meet the spec requirements to be considered 'good', so choosing the right one is more about matching a specific cameras strengths to the type of work you do. My work is 80% video, 20% photo for clients, and I also do content creation. The FP's image quality destroys almost every other camera I've ever compared it to, but it lacks a lot of other features that become important to workflow, ease of use, and efficiency. I use an FX3 as my main video camera, and as much as I loved the FP, I realized it was overkill for what I needed it for. Too much time was being lost trying to color match two cameras with different color sciences so I swapped it out for the A7IV. Now I have two bodies in the same ecosystem, lens mount, color science, etc.
@@TacticalCactusMediaI find that really interesting, because you could get 4 or 5 of the FPs for the price of those two bodies. Then you wouldn't need to worry about matching colors. The fx3 must really be worth the money.
@@jessehavok4181 Using the FP as a cinema camera is where it truly shines. When you can be behind the camera and rig it out a bit, you can really take advantage of the incredible IQ, colors, and CDNG RAW. Once you enter any type of run and gun environment or a scenario where you need to film yourself, it quickly becomes incredibly frustrating to use. If you are a solo freelancer running multiple cameras at once, the lack of timecode, continuous AF, and poor internal preamps for audio presents problems. You can't use the FP for streaming, podcasts, or as a webcam because you cannot charge it over USB-C while the camera is on. The FX3 in my experience is the perfect blend of incredible image quality paired with ease of use features that makes it much more applicable to a wider range of filming scenarios, at least for the work that I do. If what I did involved being behind the camera 100% of the time, I'd still have the FP.
Why did I buy one. Best bang for buck for my needs. I think the name perfectly reflects what the camera is. Fortissimo - Big capability, Pianissimo - Small size, humble. But also the flexibility - rig it up with power dummy battery gimbal cinema lense focus pull go as big as you want it can handle all of it (CinemaDNG 12-Bit 4K DCI 2-hour non stop recording) or slap a pancake or small DC DN zoom lense on it and a few spare batteries for travel everyday carry and call it a day. The price for completely fully made and assembled in Japan is amazing value. For the third iteration IBIS will be at the top of the wish list and faster readout or no compromises global shutter (but cmon lets be real), flippy screen not needed prefer the solid feel of the current screen. From my own personal use the biggest drawbacks are IBIS and readout speed (banding in artificial light) both can be worked around but still will be nice to have on future iteration without sacrificing the size and weight.
Even just shooting 12bit RAW in 1080p and later upscaling to 4K in Davinci will give you a much nicer image than most 10bit 4K or 6K prosumer cameras out there. The colour science in this thing is on the level of a Sony Venice that costs $50.000. If you can wrap your head around the quirks and find a workflow that suits you this thing is something really special. The original FP is better than the FP L at video. Rigged with a cage, top handle and external monitor/recorder it's a cine beast.
I have a thermoelectrically cooled Altair Astro camera with what I think is the same sensor, the Sony IMX455 also 61mp. The images it produces with up to 10 minute exposures are incredible. It's not for normal photography though. I think putting this sensor into a compact camera of that size is a brilliant idea and I'm going to investigate more. One thing though - I have Nikon lenses. How could they connect?
The production wuality on these videos are amazing, for youtube content. Just wondering, are you using anamorphic lenses for your content? Can you plz do a gear review of your setup?
Thanks, you're very kind! It's a very simply setup. The camera i use is a Sony ZV-E1. For the main shots I use a Sigma 24mm f/2 and for the top down stuff I use a Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8. That's it! The anamorphic crop is added in post. I hope this helps!
I really wanted to buy it but I could not accept lack of both features: EVF and tilt LCD. This big attachable EVF only has frightened me. Sigma should rather put on the top hot-shue for attaching external EVF. I would prefer mk2 to have 45mp sensor with native 50iso, small grip, IBIS would be great, of course improved AF as well. That one I would buy for sure.
Thanks for the review. I do love my fp/fpL. I don’t think the evf causes an imbalance, quite the contrary. The lens is off-center, so the evf actually balances it. Besides, it weighs next to nothing. Using the camera without an evf or monitor is a bit frustrating, mainly for getting good focus. Cheers!
I have the FP almost exclusivly for video. Paired with Leica 24-90 zoom with stabilization. RAW 4K to external SSD, Viewfinder or external 7" monitor. It's a dream setup for the higest quality video. But it't not point and shoot for sure. You have to be deliberate with it, then you get magic :)
@@mattdebyl8806 Only what the sales person told me in the shop when I was checking it out, and no, he wasn't trying to sell me some other camera. I guess it depends upon how big a file and what codec one is recording in.
As a semi-rabid Sigma FP fan. I can't always give good reasons for my obsession, especially in light of other cameras in the same price range. To be honest, I just love the little thing, and I think I get some satisfaction shooting with a camera a lot of other people have dismissed.
The non-L Sigma FP seems to me to have the sensor of A7III. They're the same size, same megapixel count, same pixel pitch size, almost identical iso range.
The 12-bit video in this camera isinsane, the colors and flexibility in post is absolutely amazing, my only remark is the lack of 12-bit, 4K 60 frames per second.
I got one 2 months ago for forthcoming trip, as 1) the size; 2) the iso 6; and 3) the focus bracket functions would be great for travel and landscape. Additionally, I can use my L and M mount lenses. Have used it a couple of times and have bought a collapsable LCD viewer instead of the EVF which is very good. Main dislike is the dreadful rolling shutter rules out most street/action use, as it only has electronic shutter. So, it is still a toss up as to whether I bring it instead of my SL2-S……..god I love that baby despite the bigger size, lack of iso 6 and focus bracketing and a smaller sensor…...What to do!? Thanks for the review Tom.
I'd love Sigma to release a modern update to the Olympus XA with a fixed 40mm f2.8 lens. Obviously they've shown that they can mount a FF sensor in a small body.
It’s really wild if you perform the flip-up screen hack that a guy has 3d printed the parts and instructions for. It appears to be quite doable and for me, makes it the perfect camera. I have not tried it though. Sorry no link but it’s out there.
I’d like to know if Sigma lenses would be better exploited or have additional benefits if used on Sigma cameras like the fpL, similar to the way native Sony lenses are better utilized on Sony bodies, (i.e faster/more accurate autofocus, faster burst shooting (no 15fps limit), focus breathing compensation (not offered for 3rd party lenses).
I now have the sudden urge to stretch myself thin on a credit card to obtain this magic camera that I have never heard of before now! This looks like such an AMAZING filmmaking rig setup meets (borderline) medium format level photo camera! This thing seems RAD! If only the lens selection was a bit better... OR if you could shoot Sony Emount lenses with it.
This would complement the S5 II very well as a compact travel camera. If it had a mechanical shutter I would be all over it, but for now my travel setup is the sony a7c with the 20-70 f4. My gripe with the sony is the colours, I have yet to find the right JPG settings
02:14 man i used to watch your videos when your hair looked like that and the youtube recommended you again so i didn't recognise you !! may the logarithm bless you ..
Stick to your Fuji. Even if it was perfect you’d have to buy all new lenses if you went to the Sigma because the mounts are different, or get a lens converter and hope the auto focus still works.
One thing I really dislike about this camera is the lack of a pancake lens. If there was a 35, 40 or 50mm proper pancake lens this would similar in portability to a GR III or X100 series or similar. The body is just so small but then there are no L Mount pancake autofocus lenses which make the camera so so much bigger, you just can't put it in your pocket
Lenses have a functional resolution. If you crop in too much you'll just get "moosh". Of course, how bad the moosh is depends on the lens. So really, "cropping in" on a lens that's not designed for it, shouldn't even be considered in all practicality. Besides, may as well crop in post if you're gonna moosh it up anyway.
You need one of the smaller hand grips esp in the cold with gloves. You forgot to mention it was weather sealed perfect for your trip. I don't have the problem with the dial. But the biggest issue with the evf other than cost is a lack of eye sensor, and maybe not having the fw allow for record through it, but playback always via screen.
The camera may be tiny, but its hefty price tag tells a different story. Within this price range, there are plenty of excellent options available, not to mention the additional lenses you'll need to buy. I'll stick with what I have for now...thanks for sharing
No IBIS, no buy dis. Nice little camera, though, especially when a large MILC or DSLR is just too much... But I use my m6 Mk II for that, with my r6 II as my primary. Overall a nice, informative review, thanks.
@@mattdebyl8806 if you are taking a 61MP image shot at 35mm, and CROP that image to what 88mm would look like, that will not look the same as if you shot it at 88mm. And digital zoom is just that- it's cropping the image. It's not "zooming" into the scene at all.
7Artisans sells a very much pancake-y 35mm L-mount lens. This could, in theory, become a perfect EDC powerhouse... maybe not enough to dethrone the GM1, but, given the sensor size, would easily outweight the cons.

I don't ever shoot video but I have a weird attraction to this body just because of its size-to-resolution ratio (if such a thing were to be measured). I have an S1 that I love using but it can be a lot to carry on long hikes. An fp L takes the same glass, has like two and a half times the resolution, and is just so tiny. I don't know. Maybe I'm trying to rationalize an irrational desire.
Is the footage in "Take Me To the Mountains" from the fpL? It's not a great selling point: shaky, very visible rolling shutter, and intermittent softness (the ice climbing shot).
No, it's all phone footage. I didn't think I needed to note that in the video as I felt it was obvious given the results, but I will do it in future. Sorry for any confusion.
4:42 _"you can output lower resolution RAW files without the cropping applied."_ Can you comfirm this? I don't believe it's possible to reduce raw resolution without a crop or skipping pixels which would introduce serious moiré pattern.
First time on this channel. Super thankful for the aspect ratio! Props! And, a stellar review. You've got yourself a new sub!
Size and weight?
Why would you remove the EVF if you can just remove the battery and charge it externally ?
It doesn't come with a charger. You only get a USB-C cable in the box. This was a loan camera, but if I owned it myself then I would do as you suggested and get an external charger for it.
@@TomCalton I would too for sure. When listening to the video I doubted for a second and thought it was a non-removable internal battery. That would have been the worst
@@TomCalton You can use a cheap Panasonic charger.
I dont´t want to see preset edited photos in a review. makes no sense at all.
So what
What if you don’t want to edit?
Go watch other reviews with unedited pictures then. It's not like this is the only existing review of the camera.
Indeed, is like some reviewers would be in 2010 or so when raw was mandatory. Now every camera has enough quality that sooc jpegs are better indicator if the color science of certain brand is akin to what one desires without need of editing. I like Canon and Fujifilm, although perfectly professional I feel uninteresting Nikon and Sony.
seeing photos on a graded 4k video doesn't makes sense either but here we are
I love/hate the fp. I wish they would make a third with intergraded evf and cf express b slot then it would rival any mirroless camera
Absolutely amazing now.
..though a different animal in terms of weight and size.. but obviously a great proposition to complete a camera system around a lens mount.
What made you sell it? Is the a7IV that much better of a camera?
Great sensor, but only 4K video. Hard to choose this over an A7RV.
Good excuse to pair it to the Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16-35mm f3.5-4.5 or the Panasonic F4 version.
The Leica 16-35 on the fp is a strong combination.
Mmmm we looked at them but I believe they do overheat with no fan but just passive cooling via that funky heat sink.
Never heard of anyone having overheating issues with them. Certainly I’ve never experienced any shooting extended performances etc.
Something tiny like that with a cine lense would be awesome on a gimbal for shooting videos.
The non-L Sigma FP seems to me to have the sensor of A7III. They're the same size, same megapixel count, same pixel pitch size, almost identical iso range.
That zoom out of the baby sloth was hilarious
The butthole reference 😮? That was funny!
It's gonna be really interesting to see where this ends up in price in a few years once the Sony competition goes down after one or two new models
I remember being on set for a campaign shoot the photographer had this camera with the directors viewfinder. The shooting experience looked so cool.
What lens are you using? Its a beautiful aspect ratio I don't see often on RUclips.
Watching this video I thought what a neat little camera I'll pick one up,
If I had known the price I wouldn't have even watched the video
Would really like to see this camera with the brightin star 28mm pancake lens!
02:14 man i used to watch your videos when your hair looked like that and the youtube recommended you again so i didn't recognise you !! may the logarithm bless you ..
Hey, welcome back!
Yeah, lockdown didn't treat me too kindly, did it? 🤣 I'm glad you found your way back to the channel though 😄
That spot on the sensor was killing me lol
I freaking love this thing, been wanting one for ages. Super cool. Lack of IBIS is the only reason I never dived in.
Buy lenses with OS built in - don't need IBIS then ;)
3:23 is crazy
Sigma Shutter Leaf Lenses + Sigma FP/L = Everything will make sense ❤
Looked it up to see if I could afford one…I’ll stick to my Fuji X-T3😅
Stick to your Fuji. Even if it was perfect you’d have to buy all new lenses if you went to the Sigma because the mounts are different, or get a lens converter and hope the auto focus still works.
I think I only would use it for video... for photo, don't see the extra value over the 'standard' Canon / Nikon / Sony camera's...
I was thinking about this camera BUT. it takes L mount and I really wanted to get E mount so that's why I went for sony instead
The sloth eye was brilliant
Glad you appreciated that moment 😜
You need one of the smaller hand grips esp in the cold with gloves. You forgot to mention it was weather sealed perfect for your trip.
I don't have the problem with the dial. But the biggest issue with the evf other than cost is a lack of eye sensor, and maybe not having the fw allow for record through it, but playback always via screen.
00:10 is there something on the sensor..?
The camera may be tiny, but its hefty price tag tells a different story. Within this price range, there are plenty of excellent options available, not to mention the additional lenses you'll need to buy. I'll stick with what I have for now...thanks for sharing
I wish there was a way to shoot log on this camera. dng is awesome but it’s way too big of a file size to be shooting on all the time for me at least
I meant cinema dng for video
No IBIS, no buy dis. Nice little camera, though, especially when a large MILC or DSLR is just too much... But I use my m6 Mk II for that, with my r6 II as my primary. Overall a nice, informative review, thanks.
Zooming in to 88mm is not the same as shooting at 88mm. The depth of field and compression are totally different.
You mean "digital zooming"
This has been proven time and time again to be false. At least for the ‘compression’.
@@mattdebyl8806 if you are taking a 61MP image shot at 35mm, and CROP that image to what 88mm would look like, that will not look the same as if you shot it at 88mm. And digital zoom is just that- it's cropping the image. It's not "zooming" into the scene at all.
@@nakleh actually it does. Been proven time and time again.
@@mattdebyl8806 care to share proof of your concept?
7Artisans sells a very much pancake-y 35mm L-mount lens.
This could, in theory, become a perfect EDC powerhouse... maybe not enough to dethrone the GM1, but, given the sensor size, would easily outweight the cons.
Okay hear me out sigma , borrow the fx 30 sensor from sony , put a hotshoe , get a fully touch screen articulating screen . And we got the best apsc video cam . And those sigma contemporary lenses are just the perfect match. Imagine a apsc fp with 18-55 f2.8 !

Orrr foveon sensor fp ? Like seriously bring out em big guns with a stacked foveon or something 😂
12 bit raw for video is crazy good !
Agreed. It looks amazing!
Shutterless camera's are antiquated. I sold it !

12 bit 4K RAW...my god, just like my 5D MK III with Magic Lantern. :)
You forgot to mention it is only "Made in Japan" camera right now, no Japanese camera company now build or manufacture in Japan. Only sigma even nikon, canon, Fujifilm, sony and Panasonic are all being assemble overseas and have factory. But sigma only one company both the camera and lenses are made in japan 😁👍📸
So the Japanese ship their manufacturing base elsewhere and then sell you those products. Blame the Japanese or the country they choose to have their manufacturing base? Btw, it’s the Japanese management that they implement in those overseas bases. So Made in Thailand, Made in Vietnam are what the Japanese have decided…
@@BigFoot-w4dbut still the consistency of the finished products are different from japan and other countries, even you compare your own country to made in China products. I know what I mean by that.
How is the focusing speed, tracking etc,
I just can't get over the lack of EVF and mechanical shutter.
Interesting. Bit I'll stick with my Panasonic GM1 (mft) for now. Thanks. toronto canada.
Of course we want to see the old review!
"high quality lenses we know and love". lol. Maybe the camera should include that signature Sigma front focus we all know and love.
is that a spec of dust on the sensor @ around 05:28 perhaps, or a glitch in the video image!?
How in the world do you hold the thing?
thoughts on this vs the lumix s5 ii?
Fab review. Biscuit crumbs on the sensor though 😂
It's actually spunk... I mean, yeah, biscuit crumbs. Right...
😂
Is the footage in "Take Me To the Mountains" from the fpL? It's not a great selling point: shaky, very visible rolling shutter, and intermittent softness (the ice climbing shot).
No, it's all phone footage. I didn't think I needed to note that in the video as I felt it was obvious given the results, but I will do it in future. Sorry for any confusion.
4:42 _"you can output lower resolution RAW files without the cropping applied."_
Can you comfirm this? I don't believe it's possible to reduce raw resolution without a crop or skipping pixels which would introduce serious moiré pattern.
RAW Adobe DNG is the collection of untainted sensor data so this isn't adding up.
I am getting OCD from the mark on the sensor😢
It’s not the sensor. It’s the UV filter cover glass.
I cant stop thinking about that spot on the censor
The camera quality looks great 👍🏼
so why not grab an A7C II instead of this thing?
